As Chamber of the Year, we have enjoyed a very successful year so far, we celebrated our Chamber of the Year status at West Midlands Safari Park for our Chamber Summer Party event in August where many of you joined in with the fun. In July we honoured the success of the two counties’ outstanding businesses at our prestigious Chamber Awards evening and June saw our new website being named in the Top Ten of Kentico websites. Also, the Quarterly Economic Survey for Q2 was completed by over 300 local businesses ranking us 7th out of 53 Chambers, the results showed positive local trends in both domestic and overseas markets proving the economic recovery is still on the right track.

We are now looking forward to the Chamber’s Business Expo on 18 September 2014, taking place at The Three Counties Showground, Malvern, the Business Expo is one of the Chamber’s most popular events and is a great opportunity for businesses to network, promote their company and raise their profile within the business community. We look forward to seeing you there and hope you are all busy baking for the ‘Chamber Bake Off’, raising money for Macmillan. Looking further ahead, Christmas may seem a long time away but the Chamber is already getting festive and preparing for the Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre at the end of November. This will be the second year that the Chamber has run this fantastic event and it promises to be bigger and better than last year with extended opening times and over 100,000 people expected to pack the city’s streets as they enjoy the festive fun of the fayre. I hope you enjoy this edition and look forward to seeing you at our Business Expo, Victorian Fayre or one of our many other events. Mike Ashton mikea@hwchamber.co.uk

CHAMBERNEWS
Chamber Staff at the Chamber Business Awards 2014
CONTINUING THE SUCCESS OF THE CHAMBER AND ITS MEMBERS INTO THE FUTURE The past two editions of Business Direction have looked at the success of the Chamber and its members in both the past and the present. Completing the Chamber’s ‘Success’ series, we now take a look at some of the potential success stories of the future. How do you top being Chamber of the Year? That’s the challenge facing Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce as we seek to achieve substantial success once again in the future. The Chamber is not resting on its laurels, and is doing everything in its power to continue to be a dynamic member-led not-for-profit organisation working to facilitate business success for our local community, particularly our 1400 strong member network. Undeniably the most significant political event coming up in the near-future is the 2015 General Election next May, and lobbying on behalf of business in the build-up will form a central part of the Chamber Policy team’s work. The Chamber’s Business Manifesto, which will document our main policy focuses over the next five years, is in development and we will seek to successfully lobby local candidates for office in order to ensure that a 04
pro-growth agenda and creating a business-friendly environment are top priorities for the next government, regardless of political colour. In addition, the Chamber aims to introduce two new forums in 2014/2015 in order to expand our already extensive offering of business forums. The sectors currently covered in these forums include Manufacturing, HR and Food & Drink. However, next year the Chamber aims to begin business forums for Property Services and Innovation too, providing more opportunities for attendees to make the connections that fuel their businesses’ expansion. The natural place to look when considering member success stories of the future is the Chamber’s Most Promising New Business category (sponsored by Worcestershire Business Central) at our Annual Awards. Founded in early 2012 by two former UK Special Forces communicators, Hereford-based Kinetic Six develops and supplies innovative, reliable and discreet communications and tracking equipment and services to organisations operating domestically and overseas. Kinetic Six was thrilled to have been named “Most Promising New Business” at the 2014 Chamber Awards. Operating primarily within three major markets Government, Private Security, and Wildlife Conservation - the company is focused on growing its local business relationships and client base, especially in relation to its advanced radio communications products and asset
tracking services, TracKS. Kinetic Six’s directors, Kevin Marriott and Shaun Leavy, are also working to further expand their team of technical, operational and strategic experts in order to stay at the forefront of industry advancements. With several promising new products in development and plans to upgrade its office space soon, the company’s leadership is focused on continuing to successfully provide its clients with cutting-edge products and excellent service. Furthermore, Allvalves Online Ltd, who were highly commended in the Most Promising New Business category, have many plans to continue the development of their rapidly growing business. Having recently secured an exclusivity agreement with a global manufacturer, the future looks bright for them. A recent trip to Taiwan has further secured a long term partnership, with plans to open a European after sales centre with their new partner. This will open new opportunities in Europe and allow them to grow their Pershore team. They have plans to develop the team in 2015 and are working closely with apprentice schemes to give young people the opportunity to join them on their journey to a successful future. Overall, we have enjoyed a successful year so far and are looking forward to sharing the success of the Chamber and its Members in the near future and beyond.

QUESTION
QUESTION
I run my own business and worry about what would happen should I have an accident or be diagnosed with an illness. Who would look after my interests if I became incapacitated?
I have built up a very successful business over the last fifteen years and I want to pass it on to my children after my lifetime but I am concerned that it may leave them with inheritance tax problems. Is this the case?
ANSWER
ANSWER
If you have not appointed a person that you trust to act as your attorney, an application will need to be made to the Court of Protection in order for someone to be appointed as your Deputy. The application process for a Deputyship Order can take months and be costly. It is therefore advisable that you appoint, through a Lasting Power of Attorney, a person that you trust to look after and deal with your property and financial affairs should you become incapable of doing so yourself.
As you have owned your business for more than two years, provided that it is not a business of “wholly or mainly holding investments” (eg renting out commercial units), it should qualify for 100 percent business property relief from inheritance tax. Even if it were an investment business and did not qualify for business property relief, your children would have the option of paying any inheritance tax due on the net value of your business by ten equal instalments over ten years provided they did not sell the business during this time.
QUESTION I don’t think a Lasting Power of Attorney applies to me as all my business accounts and property are in the joint names of myself and my business partner. Is this right?
ANSWER It is correct that your partner would be able to access the joint business accounts. However your partner would not be able to sell the property held in your joint names. The legal position is that a minimum of two sellers are required to give a valid receipt for the proceeds of sale from jointly owned land or property. In practical terms, this means at least two people need to sign the Land Registry transfer to the buyers. A Lasting Power of Attorney over your property and affairs would remove the need for your partner to apply to the Court of Protection for an Order appointing a trustee to sign on your behalf.
QUESTION I was divorced many years ago and have grown-up children from that relationship. Since then I have been living with my partner and we run a successful business together. My partner is concerned because I have not made a will. Surely as my ‘common-law’ wife, she would inherit everything anyway?
ANSWER Your partner is right to be concerned. If something happened to you, your assets (including your share of the business) would pass under the ‘intestacy rules’ which apply when you have no will. In your case, these rules would provide that your estate would go to your children. Co-habitees are not entitled to anything. Your partner would have to make a claim against your estate to be financially provided for and her claim may be contested. If you make a will, you can ensure she is properly looked after and that your share of the business will pass to her.

Kingspan Insulation partnered up with the Institute of Physics to get the 44ft lorry-lab to visit Wigmore, Lady Hawkins’, Earl Mortimer and Tenbury secondary schools earlier this year. With three distinct lab areas in the lorry, groups of up to six young people at a time took part in experiments delivered by volunteers.
Kingspan Insulation recently won a Herefordshire Diamond County Award, as they understand the importance of contributing to Herefordshire whether that is through employment, local sourcing, education programmes, road safety initiatives as well as the work of the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust.

LOCAL LAW FIRM TO LEAVE QUALITY SOLICITORS Local law firm, Gordon Lutton, which has offices in Hereford and Worcester, has today revealed that it is to leave the QualitySolicitors network. The firm, which has been trading as QualitySolicitors Gordon Lutton, will revert to its former name Gordon Lutton Solicitors.
SPELLER METCALFE LEADS THE WAY IN SUSTAINABILITY A local Worcestershire building contractor has recently been awarded the accolade of delivering the highest scoring sustainable building in the world. Speller Metcalfe, which is well known in the region for their award-winning sustainable projects, completed the highest ever ‘BREEAM Outstanding’ scheme on behalf of client Western Power Distribution for their work on an industrial depot in Lincolnshire. BREEAM is an assessment method recognised world-wide for rating the sustainable value of non-domestic buildings, and the local construction company scored the highest mark ever recorded – 100.5%. Adrian Speller, Environmental Manager at Speller Metcalfe said: “To reach over 100% seems somewhat impossible, but we worked extremely hard to deliver over and above what was required in each category. We hope this scheme, our tenth for Western Power Distribution, will be an example to businesses in what they can do to reduce carbon emissions and building running costs while having a positive impact on the environment.” www.spellermetcalfe.com

CREATING WEALTH THROUGH DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY Around 100 science and technology students from Redditch got an insight into how to create wealth at Sci-Tech 2014. Pupils were able to talk to scientists, experience practical hands-on sessions, understand how science is used in industry and learn about career prospects. The event, which took place at Redditch NEW College, featured guest presenter Martyn R Hale, owner of Bromsgrove-based HME Technology Ltd, a market leader in the manufacture of design and technology and science equipment in schools. Mr Hale explained how small businesses contribute as a wealth creator by employing people, explaining that salaries earned empowered them to spend income to buy groceries and pay their mortgages, while all the time providing taxes to fund health and education, amongst other state funded services. He also stressed the importance of qualifications – he had left school with virtually none but subsequently worked via night school to secure ‘O’ levels and explaining how company ‘on the job’ training courses gave him the necessary skills in salesmanship. www.hme-tech.com September/October 2014

MAKING THINGS HAPPEN WITH CARRIBER SOLUTIONS We caught up with Adam Roberts, the founder of Carriber Solutions, to see what he can offer small and medium-sized businesses in Hereford and Worcester. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND CARRIBER SOLUTIONS Carriber Solutions was set up two years ago with the aim of providing bespoke advice and on-site safety management to the events industry. Prior to creating the company, I had a long career within theatre and live events, including doing the lighting and rigging for large concerts and festivals. This has given me a unique perspective on how to innovatively solve problems for clients I take safety very seriously but I do get frustrated when you hear Health and Safety used as a reason for something not happening. It is about lowering and managing risk to staff and the public. The media tend to perpetuate this idea of ’Health and Safety gone mad’ when, in fact, my position is all about coming up with innovative solutions to make things happen. 024
Our job is to minimise the risk and come up with inventive and pragmatic ways to make sure that events can go ahead, within budget and protecting the artistic vision.
I am keen to use my expertise built up over the years to help small and medium sized businesses in the Hereford and Worcester area with their Health and Safety needs to make sure they are compliant.
WHAT DOES YOUR BUSINESS DO?
They may be sitting there not knowing how to move forward and that Health and Safety legislation is hindering their vision; it just needs someone like us to come up with a solution and reassurance that they are doing it right.
From the largest event to the smallest, we provide a bespoke Site Management and Health and Safety service. Our team cover all aspects of event safety including risk assessments, emergency planning, liaison with councils and emergency services, auditing suppliers, CDM and managing contractors. All of our work is designed to create a safe and well managed event for crew and public. Due to the diverse nature of the industry, we have a very broad knowledge of Health and Safety and the components which go to make a successful show, all of which have been developed to fulfil our clients’ requirements. From this I believe our innovative knowledge can be transferred to SMEs to meet their legal obligations and create a positive working environment. The H&S process is a useful auditing tool and, if part of the organisation’s culture, can bring real cost benefits rather than perceived as a necessary evil like VAT
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR MOST EXCITING PROJECTS? Since the company was founded we have been involved in a number of high profile events including The Coronation Festival at Buckingham Palace in 2013. That was a challenge because everyone expected a good show but we also had to keep the gardens immaculate - and our client was the Queen! In the end, the event went well and 70,000 people attended it. We also work at The Farnborough Airshow, which announced $200bn of trade contracts and attracted 75,000 during the public weekend in 2014.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB? I love the way each job is different. I love helping things happen which people thought would not be able to go ahead. I love helping clients to push the envelope. September/October 2014

MARKETING
PARTNER t FAQs Q. What is Nexus Creative? A. A marketing communications and business
development agency.
Q. What does that mean in practice? A. We help our clients in the competition for customers’
attention and improve their chances of succeeding in the marketplace.
Q. What does that usually achieve? A. It depends on the objectives or targets that our
clients have. It could be a better defined brand profile, increased footfall, more members, increased turnover, enhanced profitability or engaging with a new market or market-sector.
Q. How do you do that? A. For some clients, by just tackling one project, such
as a new e-commerce or CRM-linked website, rebranding or producing new sales material. For others we develop a strategic plan, working with them to integrate a whole range of tactical marketing solutions to achieve their goals.
028
Q. Isn’t that just ‘smoke and mirrors’ with no quantifiable end result, what we need is sales!
A. Most organisations need a flow of both new customers and ongoing business from existing customers to grow and prosper. We live in a culture where potential customers are highly ‘savvy’ and don’t have time to waste when considering a supplier or product. Keeping your name in front of those potential clients and letting them know how well you meet their requirements is vital to gaining a sale. Also, agreeing with you in advance what success will look like, and how it will be measured, will allow us to quantify our achievements together. Q. But we think our industry is different, are you sure it will work in this sector?
A.
Many businesses think their challenges and specialisms are unique, but we find that many of the challenges are similar. In twenty years of ‘doing what we do’ we have serviced almost 3000 clients in virtually every sector: hospitality, the arts, cultural tourism, accountancy, social housing, governmental departments and manufacturing. How we mix the marketing ‘medicine’ and how long we apply the ‘treatment’ will vary, but it has been proven to work for most ‘patients’.

t was a beautiful morning, with a clear blue sky and the sun shining on the gleaming steam engines and carriages at Severn Valley, as the Nexus Creative team and invited guests strolled along the platform and climbed aboard the Observation Car. For this special networking event, we were travelling in style, taking a tipple and buffet lunch on the way. It was a perfect day, with clients chatting to each other, enjoying the glorious Worcestershire countryside as we steamed along. At Bridgnorth, we alighted to see the SVR engineering department and some of the amazing restoration projects they have underway, along with an impressive new-build locomotive. Then back to the comfy chairs for pudding and the return journey. This has to be the best way to do business development...

BIGINTERVIEW
NEW UK TRADE CHIEF SETS HIS SIGHTS ON £1 TRILLION EXPORT TARGET THROUGH COLLABORATION Herefordshire and Worcestershire exporters are to see an increased emphasis on collaboration across government and the private sector with the recent appointment of Dominic Jermey as Chief Executive of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the government department that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global economy.
Dominic is aware of the scale of the challenge facing UK exporters if they are to attain the Government’s ambitious target of doubling both exports and foreign direct investment (FDI) by 2020, the former to £1 trillion and the latter to £1.5 trillion. Dominic said: “This will be no mean feat. Getting there will need the energy and creativity of all of us. It will need different ways of working between ourselves and our partners. I want everyone - government, business institutions and the media working together to get the message out about the benefits of exporting and working together to get companies to do it.” The West Midlands region continues to be the top region for overseas growth. HMRC export figures released in June show the West Midlands as having the highest year-on-year percentage increase in exports of goods in the UK. Annual exports in the region are up from £23.3 billion to £27.8 billion, which is a 19.2 per cent increase compared to last year’s figures. “There is no doubt that many companies in the West Midlands are doing phenomenally well. Large businesses which are already exporting not only inspire their peers but also develop a strong supply chain to further boost capabilities in their industry, as well as investing in research and development, which ensures our innovation is world class. As well as the region’s big hitters, there are hundreds of smaller and mid-sized sized firms also competing and winning business overseas.” There are many outstanding examples of Chamber members of all sizes that have taken the leap and found new markets overseas. From household names such as Tyrrells Crisps in Hereford and Westons Cider in Ledbury to great manufacturing firms such as Southco and Egbert Taylor in Worcestershire, even smaller, newer success stories such as cloud-based address management service provider Postcode Anywhere of Worcester. 030
At the same time, Dominic knows the job of rebalancing the economy towards sustainable export-led growth is by no means complete: “There is still more to do. We already know, for example, that only 17% of UK mid-sized businesses generate revenues outside of the EU, compared to 25% in Germany and 30% in Italy. This is a huge opportunity for the UK. Our business and trade organisations, like the Chambers of Commerce, Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and Institute of Directors (IoD) recognise the need to create stronger networks to rival those established by the French and Germans. They also recognise the significance of exporting to the future prosperity of their members and are putting exporting at the heart of their strategies to help boost support for British business.
advice and practical support to ensure firms export safely and get paid. “If you find the support you need is not there, then speak to UKTI, we want to know where the barriers are and to help you overcome them. A great way to get started is to come along to the ‘Explore Export’ event during Export Week, taking place on 12 November in Birmingham. ‘Explore Export’ brings more than 120 UKTI trade specialists from British Embassies and High Commissions from 75 countries to share their expertise in a series of one-to-one meetings with companies. Come along and ‘walk the world’ in a single day.” www.exploreexport.ukti.gov.uk www.gov.uk/ukti
“UKTI has enormous influence because of the impact a government can have in terms of opening doors that won’t be available to business on it’s own. The British Chambers of Commerce and UKTI are working together to create an international business network, providing practical business to business support for exporters in around 41 countries. We are also working with the CBI to engage more effectively with mid-sized businesses and have a regular dialogue with the IoD to understand how we can best support companies to grow. We are deepening our links with banks, accountants, lawyers and all other organisations that touch companies to ensure the export message is communicated, and of course to ensure companies get the support they need to internationalise.” Dominic believes that many more firms in Herefordshire and Worcestershire could be growing through exports, despite acknowledging that unexplored overseas markets can be intimidating for local businesses: “UKTI recognises that for many businesses exporting can be a daunting prospect. Concerns about unfamiliar red tape, different business customs and language are all common barriers to exporting. “However, with the help of the local team of experienced International Trade Advisers based at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, companies can overcome many of these barriers, choose the right market for their product, visit the market and win the business!” £21.7 billion of business has been won as a result of UKTI assistance last year, supporting over 40,000 UK companies. Dominic also speaks highly of the support available to exporters from the region’s private sector:
I want everyone - government, business institutions and the media working together to get the message out about the benefits of exporting and working together to get companies to do it.
“There is world class help from banks, lawyers, accountancy firms and logistics companies. They are ideally placed to provide access to finance, high quality

THE BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE - THE UK’S BIGGEST EXPORT? Football fans have been treated to an almost unending stream of entertainment this summer. Only a month after Germany beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, what promises to be another thrilling Barclays Premier League season kicked off.
032
Football is no longer just about fun and games, though; these days, it’s big business. In fact, the Barclays Premier League is arguably one of the UK’s biggest exports. Almost £4 billion will be earned by Premier League clubs from 2013-2016 thanks to overseas TV rights, with the money evenly distributed between the 20 teams. As a result, each club will get £65 million per season.
important exports. The pull of Premier League football attracts almost a million tourists to the country every year according to a 2012 Visit Britain study, which also found that the average spend of a football tourist£785- is £200 higher than an ordinary tourist.
However, it’s not just big overseas TV deals that secure the Premier League’s status as one of the UK’s most
Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore argues, with some justification, that the Premier

COVERFEATURE Bromwich Albion. The Baggies headed stateside for the second time in four years, winning two friendlies against USL Pro side Sacramento Republic 1-0 and 3-1 respectively as part of their eleven day training trip.
Rich Preece, UK VP & Managing Director (Intuit QuickBooks) & Mark Jenkins Chief Exec WBA
Adrian Wright, Sales & Marketing Director from Albion, commented on the commercial importance of overseas markets to the Premier League side: “Using the platform of global exposure from the Premier League is vitally important to the club’s future. We have been working hard to try and appeal to audiences from various parts of the world by making visits to these countries and endeavouring to agree commercial or sport related initiatives. The best example of our export appeal is the relationship we have secured with Intuit QuickBooks, a 22 billion dollar organisation from the Silicon Valley. They have become our Principal Sponsor for the coming season and are looking to use the sponsorship as a vehicle to enhance their brand awareness globally.” West Brom’s global appeal and aspirations remain rooted in a local base, however, and they are committed to developing and growing their football development programmes, which are run by the club’s charitable arm The Albion Foundation, in the Worcestershire region.
League’s global appeal is due to the value of their product. Seen as the most exciting League in the world, the Premier League’s unique selling point is the fact that, on any given day, any team can beat anyone else. For example, last September West Bromwich Albion won at Old Trafford for the first time in 36 years, beating Manchester United thanks to goals from Morgan Amalfitano and Saido Berahino. Another key factor in explaining the global appeal of the English game is English’s status as a global language. Spoken as the official language in over 50 countries, the pervasiveness of the English language greatly increases the ease of marketing the Premier League to foreign football fans. In addition, the Premier League carefully staggers kick-off times to maximise global TV audiences. It may be a marketing tactic bemoaned by traditionalists, but
it’s an essential part of the Premier League’s strategy to target its next big market; America. This was the summer that the US fell in love with the game they call ‘soccer’. The national side impressed in Brazil, reaching the last 16 of the World Cup, where they fell to a 2-1 defeat in a thrilling contest with Belgium. Moreover, with big names like David Villa and Frank Lampard moving to play in the States, the game’s popularity over the pond is growing rapidly, and Premier League clubs are aiming to get a slice of that lucrative American pie. Almost half of the Premier League’s teams went on tour to America this summer in order to not only prepare their players for the upcoming season, but also raise their profile in the Premier League’s next big overseas market. Among those were Chamber patron members West

5 TOP BENEFITS OF CLOUD COMPUTING FOR BUSINESSES FLEXIBILITY It can be difficult to predict how much bandwidth or storage you might need but cloud-based services are ideal for a flexible approach to IT. They can be altered at the touch of a button, from anywhere in the world, which means that your computer demand is met to suit your needs. Ultimately it’s all about having computer solutions that can adapt at the same speed as your business.
DISASTER RECOVERY IT brings with it a whole host of problems, which means that you have to have extensive disaster recovery plans in plan to ensure your business can continue to run should anything happen. The beauty of cloud computing is that providers take care of most issues and, even better, they do it faster. If the unthinkable should happen, you’re able to get back up and running as soon as possible, which means your business won’t suffer.
WORK FROM ANYWHERE We all want the ability to work on the go and cloud computing means that, as long as you have internet access, you can do just that! You can get hold of those
all-important emails and files no matter where you are so you’re always helping your business to grow. This flexibility can benefit the whole workforce too; whether it be work-life balance or general productivity, the cloud allows you to work in the most effective way.
Mike Kennedy
SECURITY Did you know that around 800,000 laptops are lost each year in airports alone? Imagine losing everything on your computer just like that! With cloud computing you can rest easy because your providers look after your files and stop people who shouldn’t getting access to them. Sounds too easy? It really is!
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY If you’re still not convinced, did you know that cloud computing is also environmentally friendly? Its flexible nature means that you’re only using the server space you need, which decreases your carbon footprint by using less energy through on-site servers. The agility of cloud computing means that your business is working as efficiently as possible, whilst also benefiting the environment in which you operate. You can have a whole system through a 12 watt powered desk top rather than a 240 watt one.

SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE IN MANAGING AND DEVELOPING PEOPLE Good people and performance management processes play an essential part in fostering employee engagement, motivating and empowering staff and raising morale. Not only do these processes help to support people in achieving their personal development goals, but they also play a vital role in ensuring personal goals are linked to, and contributing to, the organisation’s strategy and hence the achievement of company-wide objectives. Development of individuals, aligned to team and organisational improvement, will result in a continuously evolving and improving business. Performance management should no longer be seen as a once a year activity, but should be a continuous process ensuring people know the expectations that are required of them; the areas in which they are performing well, and the areas where they need to develop. Not only should tangible targets be set, but also behavioural targets – it’s important that employees understand not only what is expected of them, but the way in which they should achieve this. The inclusion of behavioural measures is becoming a de-facto standard when developing performance management systems, and enhancing this by incorporating 360 degree feedback for employees can bring added benefits. Getting a rounded view of an employee by incorporating views from peers, direct reports and customers will aid evaluation and help identify areas for development, as well as fostering good practice, promoting good working relationships and significantly enhancing the outcomes from the overall process. However, quite often the process itself can become bound up in bureaucracy, and is often unattractive to the individual. The result is an inefficient paper-shuffling exercise that can be both time-consuming, and resented, leading to poor completion rates and an inconsistency in approach. Using specialised performance software can significantly aid people management by making the process not only simpler to follow but also by automating certain aspects – for example prompting by email when actions are required. The time and effort required in people management, and collation of the outputs, is greatly reduced. Data can be analysed effectively and efficiently and used to help develop both individuals, and the organisation, in a timely and responsive way. Tracking both the process itself, and the results, become much easier. Having visual feedback, in the form of traffic lights and graphs, is extremely helpful in ensuring both a consistency in, and adherence to, process application. People management becomes
transparent across an organisation, a fairness of approach can be promoted and achieved, and the business will ultimately benefit.

CHATEAU IMPNEY HOTEL CONCLUDES FIRST PHASE OF MULTI-MILLION POUND REFURBISHMENT Across the last 12 months, an extensive refurbishment programme has seen the 106-bedroom hotel lavishly revamp the rooms in its main building, as well as transforming its Courtyard Rooms and nine on-site self-catering apartments. Further improvements have also been made to other parts of the hotel. The reception, other bar areas and the Chateau’s ornamental
gardens have also been considered as part of the renovation programme. In an ever changing media landscape, it is essential to have a marketing plan and advertising strategy that is relentlessly adjusting and adapting. At Modus, the goal of the media department is to successfully communicate with your audience, to stimulate engagement with your brand and to offer you insight into audience solutions. After seeing the success of the various campaigns for tourism, Modus were approached by Victoria Carman of Visit Worcestershire to help market the county as one of the UK’s historical and cultural hot spots. Modus used a wide variety of research tools to ensure we invested in the correct media channels. We matched the right tools to the right job with two goals; the impact and the efficiency of the campaign. Modus’ first task was to book, design and place an eight page XXXL supplement into the Birmingham Post. This gigantic advertorial boasted a visual flat size of over 1.3m. The creative content was designed to catch people’s eye in an instant. To support this campaign, we also identified adverts on petrol pumps as a highly accountable way to target motorists every time they fill up. We put some adverts in petrol stations in Stratford Upon Avon, adding tactical awareness to the campaign.
Moreover, Modus are currently working with Visit Worcestershire to put together a tourism specific advertising campaign in national magazines. With a combined readership of one million, Modus have placed the Worcestershire message in a diverse group of publications, from The BBC’s Country File to The Field, with the overall aim to increase the levels of tourism in Worcestershire and help boost the economy of the faithful city. www.moduscreative.co.uk

QES Q2 RESULTS: RECOVERY SLOWLY MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
CHAMBER ENGAGES IN NATIONAL AVIATION POLICY DEBATE Delegates from Heathrow airport visited Worcestershire County Cricket Club on Thursday 26 June 2014 to put forward the case for a third runway at Heathrow to representatives from Chamber members, as part of their nationwide tour of Chambers of Commerce, seeking advice and support from the business community. At a breakfast seminar, Simon Earles, Head of Surface Access at Heathrow, made a presentation explaining the economic case for the expansion of Heathrow, claiming that it could yield £100 billion worth of economic benefit for the country and create approximately 100,000 jobs. He also argued that expansion of Heathrow as an international hub airport was compatible with further developments at regional airports, including Birmingham airport, which is of central importance to Herefordshire and Worcestershire businesses. Chamber CEO Mike Ashton responded to the research by emphasising the importance of sufficient aviation capacity, concluding: “More capacity means more connectivity, and more connectivity means more commerce, which can only be a good thing for our members.” Chamber President and Chairman of Lesk Engineers Jim McBride also argued that increased aviation capacity was crucial to ensuring the UK’s competitiveness, lamenting the lengthy political process that has stalled airport infrastructure projects and halted progress on improving the UK’s aviation capacity. The seminar came as the Airports Commission, led by Sir Howard Davies, considers the options available to the UK in regard to future aviation capacity. Alternatives to expansion of Heathrow include the construction of a second runway
at Gatwick and the creation of an entirely new four runway hub airport on the Isle of Grain in the Thames Estuary, as supported by Mayor of London Boris Johnson. Birmingham Airport’s CEO Paul Kehoe weighed in on this important debate, commenting: “Our vision for UK aviation is a network of long-haul national airports, each supporting the comparative economic advantage of that region to boost trade, foreign direct investment and tourism. We have recently extended our runway for longer haul destinations, and our flights between Birmingham and Beijing are testament to the strong appetite for improved connectivity between the Midlands and growth markets around the world. Connectivity for the whole country requires healthy competition amongst airlines and airports, driving up standards and choice for passengers. This can only be provided by a network of airports across the country, and around London, rather than a single hub, which would threaten choice and damage the UK-wide connectivity that the economy requires.” The Chamber would like to hear your views on the national aviation policy debate and is planning a wide variety of related activities. If there is sufficient member interest, the policy team may take a trip to Heathrow to have a tour around their new terminal. Moreover, events with Gatwick Airport and HS2 are being planned for the end of September and October respectively. For more information or to express interest in attending, call the policy team on 0845 641 1641 or email policy@hwchamber.co.uk.
The economic recovery is still on the right track, although its pace is slower than desired; that‘s the conclusion of Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce following the results of their latest Quarterly Economic Survey (QES). The QES for Q2, completed by over 300 local businesses, showed positive local trends in both domestic and overseas markets. Domestic sales and orders have shown an overall improvement for both manufacturing and services firms, while overseas sales and orders have also risen compared to Q1, bucking the national trend, which showed a fall in export figures. Recruiting difficulties and a fall in the investment balance were the main concerns to arise from the survey results. Overall, however, the results remained encouraging, and local firms are also confident about the future economic prospects of the two counties, with both the turnover and profitability balances improving. Turnover confidence increased 7% from Q1 (from 70% to 77%), while confidence regarding profitability also increased by 2%. Mike Ashton, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce‘s CEO, said: “The two counties‘ businesses are driving the economic recovery and this is shown by the QES for Q2. Difficulties with recruitment and a drop in investment are disappointing, but the overall picture remains positive.“ The Chamber was also celebrating coming 7th out of 53 Chambers in terms of respondent rate for the QES, which was our highest position ever. LASTWORD
BUSINESS & THE ENVIRONMENT - THE FOCUS OF THE NEXT BUSINESS DIRECTION For the Last Word, we spoke to our very own Resource Efficiency Adviser James Bridges, who helps businesses energise their profits through going ‘green’. WHAT ARE THE MAIN WAYS IN WHICH BUSINESSES INCUR COSTS THROUGH INEFFICIENT RESOURCE USE? More often than not, businesses will have inefficient lighting systems. Typically, lighting can be a significant cost to a company, with 15-50% of annual electricity costs attributed to lighting. Lighting upgrades can reduce lighting costs by 40-70% per annum. Also, many companies have inefficient space heating systems or air conditioning units. Heating systems can be unnecessarily left on a high setting when a company’s site is closed, which can add 30%+ to the annual heating costs. The bottom line is that energy costs are not fixed overheads; you can monitor them and take control. Most organisations can save up to 20% on their fuel bills simply by managing their energy use and investing in cost-effective measures.
WHAT IS THE SIMPLEST THING A BUSINESS CAN DO TO INCREASE RESOURCE EFFICIENCY? Ensure all appliances are switched off when not in use, install a 7 day timer on any appliances that are unnecessarily left on and get to grips with the controls on your heating system- the Carbon Trust suggests that even 1°C above 19°C can increase heating bills by up to 8%. Where warehouses or factories have shutter doors, simply connecting a shut-off switch to the heating system can also lead to significant savings, as can installing light sensors in rooms and corridors where lighting is not required to be constantly switched on.
DO ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY MEASURES CONFLICT WITH BUSINESS OBJECTIVES? Historically, business have thought that there is a conflict because being ‘green’ is associated with being expensive due to the investment required. However, the reality is that there can be a synergy between the two, as business cases clearly illustrate attractive payback periods for a number of low cost measures.
they often welcome my fresh perspective on any more technical recommendations.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR A BUSINESS TO GO ‘GREEN’? There are a whole range of business benefits to going green. Firstly, enhanced reputation, both in the community and with customers. Additionally, it shows that their firm takes corporate social responsibility seriously. There is also a benefit to sustainable procurement, as some companies require their supply chain to demonstrate resource efficiency in tender applications. Finally, resource efficiency makes financial sense. As one of the best ways to cut costs, adopting resource efficient procedures can increase profitability.
WHO QUALIFIES FOR SUPPORT FROM RESOURCE EFFICIENT WORCESTERSHIRE (REW)? REW is a partnership project between Worcestershire County Council and the Chamber through Worcestershire.Business.Central and is part-European funded. Business to business SMEs that are situated in and trading from Worcestershire, employ less than 250 employees, have a turnover of less than 50 million Euros per annum or a balance sheet of less than 43 million Euros qualify for support from the scheme. However, some industries, such as primary agriculture and retail, are not eligible.
HOW MANY BUSINESSES HAVE BENEFITTED FROM GRANTS? The Resource Efficient Worcestershire scheme is going very well. The scheme is booked up until the end of September, with 100 businesses already benefiting from free assessments. To-date, a total of £255,000 grant support has been given to 35 businesses.

DO BUSINESSES LACK ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERTISE? Its probably 50:50. Some of the businesses I have visited welcomed my independent advice in looking at their operations from an outside perspective and quickly identifying where savings can be made on resource consumption. Other businesses have employees responsible for environmental management. For example, ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems knew the measures they wanted to adopt: they just wanted help with access to grants. If there is an environmental specialist employed by a company

We put a few questions to Nick Corley, Acting Head of International Trade in the Chamber’s UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) team. WHAT IS UKTI’S PURPOSE? UKTI is a Government department helping businesses to achieve success in international markets and encourage the best overseas companies to choose the UK as their preferred global partner.
HOW CAN EXPORTING IMPROVE A COMPANY’S PERFORMANCE? In several ways, including; increasing sales and profits by expanding their client base to include overseas customers, who often make larger orders than domestic customers; enabling the sale of excess production capacity; reducing risk through diversification; expanding product life cycles and enhancing the company’s status.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES FACING EXPORTERS? There are extra costs involved in developing new markets and products may need modification to meet local cultural and legal requirements. Methods of receiving payment may also be complex, while information on foreign markets can be scant. However, UKTI is well equipped to help businesses overcome all of these potential issues.
WHAT SERVICES CAN UKTI OFFER BUSINESSES? UKTI has a comprehensive portfolio of support options, including Passport to Export and Gateway to Global Growth, which are year-long packages of strategic support for new and more experienced exporters respectively.
