Appointedd - an online booking system Having been made redundant from my job as a magazine editor, the idea for Appointedd was born when I saw a gap in the market. I realised that, for a society that did everything else online, it was frustrating that we couldn’t book with small businesses online. When I spoke to my friends and colleagues, I found people agreed, and wanted to book all sort of services from independent businesses.

So I started to build Appointedd - an online booking system that allows any type of business manage their diary online and take bookings from their customers via their website, Facebook page or even a software platform such as a call-handling system. The software also has a full business management platform so that small businesses can manage their entire operation on Appointedd.

With only a proof of concept for the business, I was accepted into Entrepreneurial Spark, the fantastic (and free!) business incubator. This led to being featured on the BBC documentary The Entrepreneurs, which was one of the best, but most terrifying experiences of my life. TV cameras followed me as I had my first Appointedd sales call, and through various other rollercoaster moments, but it was winning one of the first ever Scottish Edge Awards that was my proudest moment to be filmed. I haven’t watched the documentary back since it was aired in 2013, but I know one day I’ll look back and cherish being able to watch John Swinney present me with my award and the £30,000 that allowed me to hire our first inhouse developer.

Fast forward a few years and Appointedd has market leading online booking software. In 2016 we raised £595,000 investment, with investors including Skyscanner founder Gareth Williams. I was also super proud to win Investing Women’s AccelerateHER competition and be named the BWS Magazine International Growth of the Year.

We work with lots of different companies, from salons to law firms, accountants to car valets - anyone who relies on appointments with their customers. Our partnership with Alliance Virtual Offices made our software available to serviced offices and business centres around the world and we’ve just closed our first deal with a PLC - a big step for a small company!

As we’ve grown there have been a few lessons learnt and truths that keep us on track:

Growing through collaboration A lot of our international opportunities have come from partnerships, which has allowed us to punch above our weight. The

importance of partners and forging strong relationships with complementary businesses cannot be underestimated.

Innovation Being ambitious and bold in our approach to the technology we use has been an important part of our success so far. Our cross-timezone booking tools were extremely hard to build, but that single feature has opened up massive opportunities globally.

Surround yourself with the best people Your team will make or break your business, so putting the time and effort into finding the best fit is well worth it in the long run.

And it’s not just your team, it’s also the organisations you join. I would recommend that all businesses consider joining their local Chamber of Commerce. We’ve had tons of support from both the Chamber and the other businesses in it - it’s a truly collaborative organisation. The events are amazing, and there’s lots of opportunity to do business with other members - what more could you want from an organisation!

Ctrip Announces Agreement to Acquire Skyscanner Shanghai, China, November 23, 2016 Ctrip.com International, Ltd. (Nasdaq: CTRP), a leading travel service provider of accommodation reservation, transportation ticketing, packaged tours and corporate travel management in China (“Ctrip” or the “Company”), today announced that it signed a definitive agreement with the majority shareholders of Skyscanner Holdings Limited (“Skyscanner”), a leading global travel search site headquartered in Edinburgh, the United Kingdom, under which Ctrip will acquire all of such shareholders’ shares in Skyscanner and will offer to acquire shares from the remaining shareholders of Skyscanner. The terms of the acquisition value Skyscanner at approximately £1.4 billion and the purchase consideration consists of cash mainly, the remainder consisting of Ctrip ordinary shares and loan notes.

The boards of directors of the Company and Skyscanner have approved the transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, and is expected to close by the end of 2016. Skyscanner’s current management team will continue to manage Skyscanner’s operations independently as part of the Ctrip group.

Revolutionary Vision It is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss and legal blindness in the over 60s yet so many people have never heard of EndStage Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

And because so few people know about the condition even fewer are aware there is an effective treatment available.

Now a specialist Edinburgh eye surgeon is able to fit a tiny telescope inside the eye that can dramatically improve vision without limiting natural eye movement.

Mr Jonathan Ross, – a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital’s Laser Vision Scotland, is carrying out Implantable Telescope Technology using a device created by CentraSightTM. The tiny telescope – smaller than a pea – is implanted inside one eye, behind the iris (the colored part of the eye). The implant is so small it is barely noticeable.

Mr Ross explained: “This really is a major step forward in the treatment of End Stage AMD. While it does not represent a cure it has been shown in clinical trials to improve vision by several lines on a reading chart, offering suitable patients the chance to read and to see the details of peoples faces again.

“Once fitted, patients participate in a sight rehabilitation programme where they are taught how to use the device – in effect we train their brains to get the most out their damaged retinas.

Because End Stage AMD affects central rather than peripheral vision, someone with the condition will find that if they look directly

at an object, the surrounding area will be clear but the actual ‘target’ of the eye will be smudged and hard to distinguish.

Mr Ross said: “We test both eyes and fit the telescope into the stronger eye. Once it is in place that eye does the work of both eyes as far as central vision is concerned while the other eye takes over providing the peripheral vision.

“As a trade-off to improving central vision, the peripheral vision will be restricted in the eye with the telescopic implant. However, your vision in the other eye will be unaffected.

“The eyes then learn to work together to provide ‘normal’ vision without the patient really being aware of which eye is doing which job.”

He added: “Laser Vision Scotland at Spire Shawfair Park is the only hospital in Scotland carrying out this procedure and I think it is important to get the message out to End Stage AMD sufferers that this cutting-edge treatment is now available.

Autumn Statement: key employment law changes The Government has announced a raft of employment-related measures, in its preChristmas Autumn Statement, including moves to shelve employee shareholder status and restrictions to salary sacrifice schemes. In other employment-related news, the Prime Minister made a speech days before the Statement in which she also appeared to back away from her previous proposals to require companies to have employees on boards.

In 2013 the Government introduced a new form of employment status (the Employee Shareholder) to much scepticism from the business community and employee groups alike. The idea was that employees would be issued with shares up to the value of £2,000 in exchange for sacrificing certain employment rights, such as unfair dismissal. While unions decried this as a backhanded way of denying employees their statutory rights, businesses too were critical of the usefulness of the scheme. The widely-held view was that, while this might be appropriate for fast growing, informal start-up companies, it was unlikely to be favoured by established businesses with an existing structured hierarchy.

Those concerns appear to have scuppered the scheme from the outset and led to incredibly low take-up. According to HMRC data, only 40 companies issued employee shareholder shares to just 230 employees between September 2013 and April 2016.

Unsurprisingly, the government now plans to quietly shelve the scheme and will do so “at the earliest opportunity”. In the meantime, tax breaks for employee shareholders were abolished from 1st December 2016.

The Chancellor also announced that restrictions will be placed on new salary sacrifice schemes from April 2017. Existing arrangements will be protected until April 2018, but new schemes will only attract tax relief if they relate to: Enhanced employer pension contributions; Childcare benefits (i.e. childcare vouchers and workplace nursery schemes); Bikes bought under the cycle to work scheme; or Ultra-low emission cars.

And finally to Mrs May’s speech at the CBI Annual Conference. In what is widelyregarded as a U-turn, the Prime Minister has

clarified that she will not require businesses to include elected employees on boards, a pledge she initially made during her leadership election campaign. After being met with concerted criticism from the business community, Mrs May now appears to have backed out of that promise. She has not abandoned her proposals altogether, but has suggested that the “voices of workers and consumers should be represented” in a model that works for the company concerned. The government has indicated that this issue, together with proposals to curb executive pay and increase shareholder accountability, will be examined in an upcoming Green Paper.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2017 Employers are encouraged to get involved with Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2017 which will run from Monday 6 to Friday 10 March.

The campaign celebrates the benefits apprenticeships bring to businesses, individuals and the economy.

Events and activity will be taking place across Scotland, from Shetland to the Borders, showcasing the successes of apprentices who have chosen to get a job, get paid and get qualified to develop their careers and the support from employers who have invested in them.

The week is coordinated by national skills body, Skills Development Scotland, and is backed by employers from family firms to global businesses.

Apprentices are a great way for employers to source new talent, while embracing equality and diversity will open up new opportunities to grow as a business.

Apprenticeships are designed to meet the needs of industry and help businesses grow.

Because they learn through experience, apprentices develop and refine their new skills to suit the business they are working in and the customers they serve.

As well as hiring new people, employers can use apprenticeships to upskill existing staff. So not only do employers get engaged, motivated and more productive employees, the business has staff it needs to grow.

There are more than 25,500 new Modern Apprenticeship opportunities across Scotland each year, with over 80 different types available in hundreds of jobs.

From financial services and healthcare to construction and IT, each apprenticeship is developed by industry to suit their needs.

This means that apprentices can build valuable work experience from day-one and gain an accredited qualification which is recognised by industry.

Not only do apprentices bring fresh ideas to

the business, learning on the job means they get to know the business inside out and can apply their learning right away.

Employers are enthusiastic about apprentices – 96% say those who have completed a Modern Apprenticeship are more able to do their job, with 89% saying they would recommend an apprentice within their industry.* New Foundation Apprenticeships mean young people can also now start a Modern Apprenticeship at school and employers can prepare future employees for the world of work.

With a Foundation Apprenticeship pupils in S5 can complete elements of a Modern Apprenticeship alongside their other studies, such as Highers or Advanced Highers.

Foundation Apprenticeships take two years to complete with pupils spending part of the week out of school, getting handson experience at college and with a local employer in their chosen industry.

With a Foundation Apprenticeship under their belt they leave school with an industryrecognised qualification which is set at SCQF level 6 (the same level as a Higher).

As well as gaining their qualification, Foundation Apprentices develop the soft skills – like time management, teamwork and communication – that come from quality work experience. This means they’re better prepared for the workplace when they leave school.

Foundation Apprenticeships provide an opportunity for employers to spot talented, motivated pupils who could become future employees.

New Graduate Level Apprenticeships provide work based learning opportunities up to Master’s degree level for employees.

Created in partnership with industry and the further and higher education sector, these apprenticeships combine academic knowledge with skills development to enable participants to become more effective and productive in the workplace.

As they are in continuing employment, apprentices can directly apply their academic learning to real-life situations, all the while earning a salary. For employers, they are a great way to develop existing staff who can work towards a degree without having to take time off.

Graduate Level Apprentices are able to access the same learning opportunities as those who go down the traditional route of direct entry into college or university and can progress to the highest level of professional qualifications with a range of entry and exit points from a Higher National Diploma (SCQF level 8)) to a Master’s degree (SCQF level 11).

Earn as You learn – Army Apprenticeships The Army is the biggest apprenticeship provider in the UK and offers a choice of over 70 different trades.

Offering a variety of exciting and challenging career choices include logistics, finance, administration, nursing, engineering, construction and IT, these excellent opportunities are open to those thinking about their careers whether it be full-time in the Army or part-time as an Army Reservist.

As a major employer, the Army provides people of all ages with new skills as well as developing their existing ones.

Joining the Army at 25 years old, Craftsman Amy Dixon took advantage of the engineering apprenticeship scheme because she wanted to become a vehicle mechanic.

With no previous history or family in the military, Amy, a sports fanatic that was always ‘tinkering with cars’, attended a Public Service course while at higher education.

“This gave me an insight into which Armed Service I wanted to join and there was no

doubt that the Army and the Corps for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) came top.

Taking a pay cut from her civilian job as a supervisor at Toolstation, Amy explains her reasons for joining: “I have always been interested in mechanics and the way things operate, therefore becoming a mechanic was a simple choiceand now, I perform general servicing and maintenance of vehicles as well as fault finding and replacing part – I love it.”

After her initial soldier training at Pirbright Amy moved onto Phase 2 technical training in the Defence School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME), Bordon for trade training as a Class 3 Vehicle Mechanic but it was not all studying: “During my time in DSEME I played a lot of sport” smiles Amy “which resulted in being awarded my Corps Half Colours for participation and representing my regiment in football and volleyball. I have subsequently transitioned to now fully represent my Corps in football and the Army in volleyball.”

Once qualified she moved to 30th Signal Regiment in Warwickshire and took part in Adventurous Training, which has resulted in gaining her Skiing Foundation Level 1 qualification, with the chance to progress and build up to Skiing Foundation Level 2.

“The Army Apprentice Scheme is flexible

enough to enable me to go out and experience new and exciting things such as: sport, Adventurous Training and travelling abroad; all while still gaining a civilian recognised qualification.”

Saving to buy a house, doing a job she loves and participating in most sports and adventurous training, Amy sums up her decision of joining the Army as an apprentice: “An apprenticeship not only provides essential skills to a REME tradespersons like myself but it also provides an engineering springboard to higher learning and the motivation reach high. It rewards the apprentice with the foundations to complete their work with competence, currency and confidence – in a nutshell – interesting, informative and fun.”

And concludes: “Everyone should learn something that they have an interest in and exploit every opportunity to develop – be it in the Army or on their civilian pathway.”

In the meantime, the Army also offers a range of resources and activities to support and enhance the learning experience of students while they are still at school, college or university – collectively known as BASE – British Army Supporting Education.

As a major employer, the Army provides young people with new skills and develops their existing ones through exciting and interactive activities that are free of charge.

Delivered by highly professional personnel, the activities on offer are flexible in order to fit around people’s availability and will help people succeed within their chosen career paths; these include communication, leadership and grit and resilience.

As part of BASE, the interactive sessions have been designed in conjunction with the Association of Citizenship Teaching and take the form of easy to follow workshops; these include New Science workshops, Forensics challenge, Maths, and resilience, teambuilding and leadership.

Helping managers to think differently Scottish executive development specialists Ogilvie Ross LLP have launched an initiative which allows SMEs to take advantage of training programmes that have been tried and tested with some of the world’s major corporates.

All in a day’s work for the engineers, scientists and clinical experts Using data sciences and machine learning technology on 3D medical images to solve real clinical problems sounds like a dream job to many people, but it’s “all in a day’s work” for the engineers, scientists and clinical experts working for Toshiba Medical at their European Research and Development Centre based in Edinburgh, as Company President, Dr Ken Sutherland is keen to emphasise.

The developers in Scotland work with collaborators in Europe and across the world to create new advanced analytical and visualization products and technology to help Radiologists, Cardiologists, Neurologists and Oncologists use CT, MR, Ultrasound and X-Ray imaging in clinical diagnosis. The work being done in Edinburgh finds its way into routine clinical practice in hospitals and clinics around the world via Toshiba Medical’s global sales and marketing organisation.

The business started in the mid-nineties as a spin out from Edinburgh University, but is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Toshiba Medical; a business that is turn owned by the Canon Corporation in Japan. The company

Thinking about the change that’s coming Cognitive computing…mark the term well.

In future, it’s going to change the way we think of computing, by changing the way computers “think.” And in the process, a whole new raft of opportunities awaits businesses who get on board.

The term itself combines cognitive science, the study of the human brain and its function, and computer science.

The term is apt. Cognitive computing will see human and computer work better together than ever before, and in an entirely different way, with the traditional relationship between them blurring as computers “think” more for themselves and carry out tasks previously beyond them.

It may sound a bit sci-fi, but researchers around the world are immersed in this area, and technology giant IBM – leaders in IT for decades – is unsurprisingly to the fore, working with a range of universities and others around the world, including with the University of Edinburgh’s renowned School of Infomatics.

IBM’s Watson system is the best known and pre-eminent cognitive platform. In 2011, the computer appeared on -and won- the US gameshow ‘Jeopardy!’ The machine had to identify the original questions from answers provided – a task that would have been beyond traditional computing with its need

to understand language and its nuances.

In the years since then, IBM engineers say Watson has become much faster, much smaller, and much more powerful.

Already the company is working with a whole range of organisations across a raft of sectors – healthcare, finance, and law for example.

Rashik Parmark is IBM’s technical executive for Europe. He explained: “The past 50 years of IT has been about finding ways to improve human productivity, in particular through automating manual activities. For example, back office functions in bank would once have seen hundreds of people involved in repetitive ledger work, that can now be automated, freeing people up to do other things. Also, through examining the data we have been able to see how else we might use the technology, for example through the development of ATMs, or cash machines, we augmented what cashiers did. It supports all of our daily lives in a myriad of ways.

“Where we are at right now, is trying to use technology in new ways. And that is where cognitive computing comes in.”

Cognitive computing does what it implies – it aims to mimic aspects of human thought process in a computerised model, using algorithms that allow the machine to selflearn via data mining, pattern recognition

and through understanding natural language.

Even through the ability to recognise simple images.

And therein lies the huge difference.

Cognitive computing understands natural language, and can learn from it. Previous computing has been numerically driven, as opposed to textually. But how does that translate? Computers have been faster at calculations and processing than humans for decades, but until now they haven’t been able to carry out tasks humans take for granted, like understanding natural language, or recognizing unique objects in an image.

IBM talks about entering a ‘third era’ of computing. First came the age of simple adding machines, and the first calculators, and we fed data directly into computers on punch cards. Next, we learnt how to take processes and put them into the machine, controlled by the programming we create.

But in the forthcoming era of cognitive computing, computers will work directly with humans ‘in a synergetic association.’

Rashik said: “True Artificial Intelligence, the creation of computers which can think like humans, is still out of sight in the future, for now. But this is a major step forward. This allows computers to think in a very different way, and the major benefit will be the ability to harness the best of both worlds – the

productivity and speed of machines and the emotional intelligence and contextual input of humans – to deliver a whole range of new possibilities.”

Human creativity remains key to success of cognitive computing, he stresses. But the possibilities are huge. For example, the company is working with a number of healthcare organisations in developing a model which will allow clinicians to access huge amounts of information previously invisible to computer systems because it is “unstructured” data. It is estimated this applies to up to 80% of health data.

Being able to quickly access this huge store of information can bring massive dividends, and IBM is working in the US with oncologists to improve the ability of clinicians to make better informed decisions on the healthcare of individual patients, helping improve outcomes.

The company is also working with pharma companies, looking at how researchers looking to establish clinical trials can maximise their chances of positive outcomes.

A virtuous cycle supported

by Edinburgh’s Archangels Edinburgh’s growing attraction and status as a technology business hub owes much to the successful and supportive ecosystem that has built up over the years.

Public and private sector working in partnerships, available funding, great universities with international research reputations, skilled and educated people, and a full array of professional advisers all add up to create the perfect environment for knowledge rich businesses to grow and prosper.

Archangels has played an important role in the development of that ecosystem over the past 25 years it has been existence – believed to be the world’s oldest, continuously operating business angels syndicate.

I think that burgeoning reputation owes much to the strength of the ecosystem which supports these businesses – our renowned universities with internationally recognised researchers and schools, access to traditional bank

Best of all, argues David, that ecosystem appears to be creating a virtuous cycle of technology life. As more tech businesses are spun out from the city’s excellent universities, and more make it as successes, the more attractive the Capital becomes as an option.

Livingston-based Touch Bionics is a developer and manufacturer of world-leading upper limb prosthetic technologies which was also supported for years by Archangels through many rounds of funding.

Last year, the business was sold to Össur Hf, the Icelandic provider of lower limb prosthetics, for £27.5 million.

Touch Bionics was the first company to develop an electrically powered prosthetic hand with five independently powered

fingers. The business employs over 120 people and has operations in Scotland, Germany and the US. The company was the first to be spun out of the NHS in Scotland when it was founded in 2003. Five Archangels board members each put up an initial £5,000 to enable inventor, David Gow, to complete a prototype of his product. Subsequently, Archangels led substantial further rounds of funding and the business received additional support from both Archangels and Scottish Enterprise. Not only has the business been successfully it has also transformed the lives of thousands of people.

Archangels has high hopes for some of the businesses it supports right now, including

360-degree camera makers NCTech and Zonefox, which helps its customers to protect their business critical data and intellectual property from malicious or accidental breach from insiders by providing next generation data monitoring, security analytics and endpoint security.

David said: “We are working with a number of companies we have high hopes for, and these are two that are based here in Edinburgh.

“A key strength in working with Archangels has always been that we are patient investors.

We work with the businesses, building expertise and knowledge to create value. It’s been successful over the years, and we think it will be successful for years to come.”

Exciting times as investors back small tech companies

Edinburgh-based IT expert Gareth Biggerstaff has predicted an exciting year ahead as the Scottish technology sector continues to grow.

According to Gareth, who started Edinburgh technology and digital recruitment company Be-IT Resourcing in 2013, the growth is being driven more by small companies than major corporate concerns.

Be-IT Resourcing is benefiting from the expansion of the sector. Gareth said: “The growth of small companies is opening up new opportunities for us because, whereas as technologists they understand the technology side of the business, they may

not be so good at things like marketing themselves or pitching their ideas to potential investors. They need expert advice and that is where we can help in exposing their brand to the wider market place.”

He said: “I am pleased that more and more organisations, including educational institutions, are placing greater emphasis on developing skilled young people for the tech sector.

Since its creation three years ago, Be-IT has grown to become one of the new leaders in IT and digital recruitment with an enviable list of preferred supplier agreements across sectors including banking, digital, software, consultancy, manufacturing, logistics, government, financial services and oil and gas.

“If the rapid growth we are seeing in new tech companies is to continue, we all have a responsibility to ensure that they have the skilled people they need.”

In 1986 I started working at Filmhouse Cinema whilst studying for my degree in Photography at Napier University.

After a full day of working in the Napier darkrooms (no digital photography back then), I’d come to Filmhouse to sit in another darkened room for the rest of the evening, and I just loved it! One thing led to another and in 2006 I returned to Edinburgh International Film Festival to take up my current role of Deputy Artistic Director.

Q2 What is your proudest achievement?

Every year there is something that reminds me of the power of cinema to cross boundaries and expand our knowledge of the world around us. It’s impossible to choose one particular moment, but it makes me genuinely proud to contribute to the history of an event that touches so many people every year.

Q5 How do you wind down after a busy day at work?

I watch more films…! And these days the small screen is very much where it’s at, so I see anything worth watching on Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. I also like to cook – Mexican and Italian being my best offerings in the kitchen. The odd glass of wine occasionally features too.

Q6 Who has been the biggest influence in your career?

Hopefully I’ll still be doing something that involves watching hundreds of films every year and meeting lots of amazing people.

A few people over the years have influenced me in what I do. Most notably in a job at Edinburgh College of Art (I worked there from 1992 – 98), my manager there, the late, very brilliant printmaker Peter Pretsell really helped to build my confidence. My partner Niall Fulton – who I met here at EIFF – is an actor and therefore completely understands the world in which I work.

He always encourages me to push myself, gives great advice and always supports me.

I’m also sorry to see the Twitter Dashboard that allowed us to manage multiple business accounts hit the dust having only launched in June last year (stops functioning 3rd Feb 2017).

New flightpaths will enable greater growth for the city and country

Edinburgh airport launch Consultation 2 on airspace change programme Edinburgh Airport has launched the second stage of its public consultation on the Airspace Change Programme (ACP) which will enable the airport to continue to grow and be a conduit for growth and prosperity for Edinburgh and for Scotland.

The ACP is about the way in which Edinburgh Airport intends to grow, ensuring that it continues to be able to support Scotland’s aspirations in a safe and effective way.

The second stage of consultation “You Spoke and We Listened” presents a range of proposed new flight paths which have been informed and influenced by the public responses from the initial ACP consultation period between June – September 2016.

If the airport’s preferred proposed flight paths are approved by the Civil Aviation Authority, it would mean that aircraft would fly over fewer people than at present and would reduce the noise impact for thousands of residents in the airport’s communities.

If implemented the airport’s preferred options would deliver the following major benefits: n The number of people who are currently overflown by aircraft up to around 7,000ft above their properties would reduce

significantly compared to our current routes, and affecting the lives of nearly 25,000 fewer people. n We would be reducing our Carbon Foot print and our effect on the environment.

Using present flight numbers we would reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions by over 8,500 tonnes a year. n Optimised operational benefits and the ability to meet and accommodate existing and future growth while maximising the safety of all of passengers.

Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport’s Chief Executive, said: “Edinburgh Airport is an enabler – a conduit for prosperity for all.

But we also firmly believe that our growth is something that must be linked to, supported by and supportive of Edinburgh’s development and the Airspace Change Programme (ACP) is a key part of that development.

“Our proposed changes being implemented would mean a reduction in aircraft noise for nearly 25,000 people. This will enable us to meet existing and future demand as we play our part in continuing to make Scotland better connected to the rest of the world.

“Our proposed new flight paths are a balance of interests focussed on three following key factors; impact on communities, airspace regulation as well as airport and aircraft operations.

“At the very heart of our proposals are the findings of the initial consultation – we have listened to the people and have taken a utilitarian approach in finding a solution.

“We have worked closely with key stakeholders including community and environmental groups and our proposed changes will reduce the noise impact on the community, reduce emissions and allow us to continue to meet the growing demand safely and sustainably.

“In this second stage of public consultation we will be reaching out again to our neighbouring communities. In the initial consultation over 5,000 members of the public responded to the consultation – around 0.5 per cent of the adult population that we wrote to and in the areas that we highlighted responded. This time, with lines on the map, we look forward to hearing from even more people.”

Breakfast with Andrew Kerr – Chief Executive of the City of Edinburgh Council – Carlton Hilton On a chilly Friday morning in January, Chamber members were treated to the annual update from the CEO of the City of Edinburgh Council. This regular update has been going for some 7 years and helps members frame their year ahead as well as reflect on some of the key achievements and challenges of the previous year.

This year was a forward looking presentation with updates on the City Region Deal and the City Vision that was launched in September 2016. Andrew began by reviewing the work the council had achieved through 2016, and of particular note was the introduction of Scotland’s first social stock exchange. He gave an honest account of dealing with closing 26 schools, addressing the welfare and healthcare challenges, reducing budget, shedding 1,300 staff and fully replacing the Executive Team since he took up his post.

With elections in May for new councillors he is conscious there may be a 50% change to the current elected members makeup, so a significant new group of local politicians that he and his team must advise and support in an ‘honest and meaningful way’.

He outlined his strategy of having a rolling 4 year plan which will give a more achievable planning horizon and sense of vision, with accountability at its heart.

Edinburgh won their pitch to host the Eurocities Conference in November 2018

which will be right in the middle of the important Brexit negotiations and will be an important connection for Scotland to other European cities. Edinburgh was also awarded UK Entrepreneurial City of the year 2016, City with most green space and FDI City of the Year, a striking indication that Edinburgh is getting many things right. There is still much to do and Andrew challenged us all to be part of making Edinburgh the strong, confident Capital City it can become.

The City Region Deal which he hopes will be announced in March 2017 will be the first highlight of the coming year. This is projected to bring some £2bn of value to the Edinburgh City Region. It will focus investment into innovation and skills, infrastructure and transport, affordable housing and culture and tourism. Alongside the additional funding will be greater devolved powers to the city council to manage their estates and potentially levy local tax.

The 2050 City Vision is beginning to capture the imagination of the Capital City’s citizens.

The City Vision consultation was launched in September 2016 and the ambition is to have a final draft of the Vision by summer 2017 following extensive engagement across the city. This requires the participation and contribution of the city’s citizens and communities on how Edinburgh should look, feel and operate as we move towards

2050. Andrew is passionate about addressing the city’s poverty shame and revealed that whilst 25% of school children enjoy private schooling, 25% live in poverty - an unacceptable statistic.

He has a vision for Edinburgh becoming ‘The Best City in the World’, a city that reaches out to the rest of the world and is a Strong, Confident Capital City. But this vision has to be the city’s vision not the City Council’s and it is for the citizens, through their engagement and contribution to the consultation, to decide what their vision for the city will be. The 4 key themes that have emerged so far are: Inspired, Connected, Fair and Thriving.

So with a City Deal and a City Vision to progress plus further budget cuts and new elected members to advise and support he has a busy year but one which he recognises as the ‘year of delivering’.

GET WITH IT Edinburgh’s smart apps experts have created Beezer solving a real problem faced by SME’s wishing to enter the highly lucrative mobile space in what is yet another world first out of the Capital.

In a short period of time the hi-tech outfit has experienced a phenomenal response and uptake representing, to date, a near 100% sales track record.

Beezer’s creator Brian Smillie told me it was whilst operating a digital agency in Sydney that he started to hear the same story from many of his clients: “They said: We spent a fortune building our app but nobody’s downloading it.

If an app IS accepted, your troubles have only just begun. If you’re an SME, you can spend so much money developing your app that you’ve peanuts left to market it.

Horizon 2020 actively supports SMEs by providing both direct financial support, and indirect support to increase their innovation capacity. ‘Innovation in SMEs’ aims at creating a bridge between the core of the framework programme - support to research, development and innovation projects - and the creation of a favourable ecosystem for SME innovation and growth.

The objective of ‘Innovation in SMEs’ is to optimise the Research, Development & Innovation environment for SMEs, including through the establishment and facilitation of a range of support services, with the aim of strengthening the innovation capacity of SMEs and creating value on the market and/or into society, thus underpinning the Europe2020 strategy for smart, inclusive and sustainable growth.

A range of actions contributes to building innovation management capacity for Small and Medium Enterprises. Innovation management capacity is the internal ability of companies to manage innovation processes from the generation of the idea to its profitability on the market.

SMEs can find this kind of support via a

dedicated SME instrument, which is a novel approach to support SMEs’ innovation activities. It attracts more SMEs to Horizon 2020,and helps to increase the economic impact of project results by a companycentric and market-driven approach.

The SME instrument addresses the financing needs of internationally oriented SMEs, in implementing high-risk and high-potential innovation ideas. It aims at supporting projects with a European dimension that lead to radical changes in how business (product, processes, services, marketing etc.) is done.

It launches companies into new markets, promote growth, and create high returns of investment. The SME instrument addresses all types of innovative SMEs so as to be able to promote growth champions in all sectors.

‘Innovation in SMEs’ also includes actions which provide indirect support to SMEs in the form of tailored services and projects (innovation management capacity building, IPR management, etc…), networking and mobilization actions for innovation service providers and policymakers (i.e. exchange of experience between national innovation agencies); moreover, Horizon 2020

provides direct support to the Enterprise Europe Network, a key player in improving SMEs’ access to funding opportunities.

‘Innovation in SMEs’ funds additional activities intended to support entrepreneurship, internationalisation, and improving access to markets (through the COSME programme).

Furthermore, this challenge supports the second EUREKA/Eurostars Joint Programme Initiative (2014-2020), that provides funding for market-oriented transnational collaborative R&D projects, spearheaded

by R&D performing SMEs established in any of the 34 EUREKA Member-States that participate to Eurostars. At our first event of 2016, Josh shared his personal journey from severe depression to setting himself the challenge of cycling around the world. Josh’s ambition, positive

outlook on life and sheer determination inspired members, as he have us a truly personal and touching insight into the struggles he faced daily.

Ken Hay recently joins Spire Edinburgh Ken Hay recently joined Spire Edinburgh Hospitals as the new Hospital Director, responsible for both Spire Murrayfield and Spire Shawfair Park.

A graduate from Aberdeen University, Ken’s early career was as a Chartered Accountant working in Edinburgh and Chicago before he made the move into healthcare.

He joined BMI Healthcare in 1999 and was responsible for overseeing the building of a multimillion pound cancer centre at BMI’s Nottingham hospital in conjunction with CPUK (Cancer Partners UK).

He has been Hospital Director at Aberdeen’s Albyn Hospital before also taking the Fernbrae Hospital in Dundee under his control. Most recently he joined Spire’s Edinburgh hospitals after a period in charge at the Nuffield hospital in Glasgow.

At the moment Ken is overseeing a major project that will see the installation of Scotland’s first commercial theatre MAKO robot, which will assist orthopaedic surgeons in performing state-of- the-art hip and knee joint replacements.

“This new addition to our orthopaedic facilities really puts Spire Murrayfield at the cutting edge of joint replacement technology and I’m delighted to be involved in such a project.

“Since arriving in Edinburgh I have been made very welcome by staff and consultants alike and have been impressed by the enthusiasm and professionalism shown across the board.
