Rob Cormie Green Investment Bank

Welcome to the latest edition of BC and we’re going green! This edition is dedicated to the work being done to create a model sustainable city in Edinburgh. The Chamber is playing its part in the effort, working to create effective partnerships, for example, leading private sector discussions with City of Edinburgh Council and launching and running the first three Scottish Low Carbon Investment Conferences in conjunction with the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and the private sector. We also co-ordinated the successful campaign to bring the Green Investment Bank to Edinburgh and are delighted that it has been so successfully established here. The most important message that comes through in the articles featured in this edition is that sustainability is not just something we should all support for laudable environmental reasons, but also something that makes sound business and economic sense. Its importance can only increase in terms of business and consumer priorities as more and more people understand why we need to conserve our precious natural resources and reduce our harmful CO2 emissions. Sustainability not only improves life for everyone, it also presents business opportunities throughout the supply chain. All we need is the vision to make things happen. That need for ambition and creativity in our thinking is certainly the message from Rob Cormie, of Green Investment Bank, and our partners including Forth Ports, Lothian Buses, Edinburgh Airport, Business Stream, Napier University and Standard Life, and by exciting member companies such as Vegware. Finally, thank you from the Chamber team to all our members for their support and we all look forward to a happy Festive season and a busy and prosperous 2014.

A Holistic Approach to Environmental Impact Reduction Edinburgh Napier University is known for innovative research into sustainable technologies such as biofuels and solar energy.

The first Carbon Management Plan was published in March 2009 with the assistance of the Carbon Trust in Scotland.

It also helps support cities in developing electronically enhanced services which are capable of saving energy though its leadership of the Smart Cities Regional Academic Network.

This set a target of reducing all business emissions by 25% by the end of the 2012/13 academic year from a 2006/07 baseline. The target was met, principally through integrated energy management initiatives at all campuses leading to significant carbon and financial savings.

The University is committed to incorporating the principles of environmental sustainability in all aspects of planning and operation throughout the institution. It believes in making a positive impact beyond its own environmental footprint. All students and staff are encouraged to reduce their individual environmental impact through events organised with organisations such as the Energy Saving Trust and through the opportunity to volunteer through the University Environmental Ambassadors Scheme. The overall approach to environmental impact reduction is holistic, sustained and sustainable. A dedicated Sustainability Office was established in 2008 and this enabled the integration of historic work and progress with links to academic research to set significant, robust environmental targets including but not limited to carbon management.

4

BC December 2013 January 2014

The updated plan to be launched shortly will update the carbon reduction target to 35% and will incorporate further behaviour change and participatory targets to ensure that staff, students and visitors to the university consider their own environmental impact. In taking a holistic approach, the University considers the overall impact of business and commuter travel through surveys which are now being used to develop a University Travel Plan. In addition, the University commissioned a year-long biodiversity audit in 2010 and 2011 to assess the biological quality of its campuses. The results allowed the development of a Biodiversity Management Plan and identified some rare plant and fungus species on University grounds, including the Yellow Bartsia and Clavulinopsis cineriodes fungi – the first recording in Scotland.

The University works with partners to ensure that all work is externally verified and assessed. The University gained the Carbon Trust Standard in 2010, superseded by the Carbon Masters Standard, scoring well in both quantitative reductions and qualitative governance and management. In 2013 it gained the Carbon Trust Water Standard and was presented with a Highly Commended accolade within the Sustainable and Environmental Impact category of the British Institute of Facilities Management Awards. The University has joined the EcoCampus scheme with the aim of developing a fully integrated Environmental Management System (EMS) to gain ISO14001 by 2015. The EMS is already is already enhancing all previous work through a fully integrated governance approach to reducing the environmental impact of the University. The approach has delivered major positive change within the University and continues to exceed local and national targets on this important agenda. New buses help company support the green revolution With the introduction of an integrated transport system in Edinburgh - and the increasing number of residents, visitors and commuters into the city - concentrated efforts are being made to ensure that the capital’s public transport system is not only, reliable, cost effective and of high quality, but also environmentally responsible. The vehicles that will be used to operate the tram system are the largest in the United Kingdom and will carry in the region of 250 passengers and will use far less fuel per passenger than travelling by car. Tram will have priority over other traffic at junctions, thus encouraging people to leave their cars at home for a faster journey time. For off street areas of the route trams are lightweight compared to conventional trains and therefore have a potentially lower energy use.

Lothian Buses has developed a strong Corporate Social Responsibility strategy through a mixture of environmental improvements and community engagement. The company has added 25 diesel-electric hybrid buses to its fleet with help from the Scottish Government Green Bus Fund. These vehicles consume less fuel than conventional buses and the 25 buses, which form the largest fleet of double-deck hybrids in Scotland, is projected to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by over 1000 tonnes per year. The reduced fuel consumption has a corresponding reduction in local air pollutants, and because electric batteries are used to power the bus the vehicles run more quietly, cutting noise pollution in the city. The decision to use the hybrid vehicles on the services 1 and 10 was as a result of them running through two Air Quality Management Areas and from areas with a high volume of car commuters to the City Centre. In order to encourage modal shift among commuters, vehicles were given an executive branding, with audio-visual stop announcements and free onboard Wi-Fi. Onbus surveys indicate that more passengers are using the upgraded services since the hybrid

buses were introduced. The hybrid buses are now also running on all core night bus services. Continued environmental improvements to the company’s operations has led to string of environmental awards in 2012/3 including Scottish and UK Transport Awards for Sustainable Transport, Scottish Green Awards, VIBES Transport awards and both Scottish and UK Green Apple Awards. Older buses are not immune from environmental improvement and a programme to retrofit older buses with SCRT technology has seen 46 vehicles receive the new exhaust system, which reduces their contribution to local air pollution in the city by cutting their PM10, Hydrocarbon, Carbon Monoxide and NOx emissions by 70-99%.

Generally, public transport produces far less climate change emissions per passenger journey than an equivalent journey by car. By encouraging modal shift to tram and bus, Transport for Edinburgh can contribute to reducing carbon emissions by increasing the use of public transport. Passengers benefit from better city centre accessibility, greater journey comfort, and higher service frequencies.

Inspiring a Model Sustainable Capital City The City of Edinburgh Council has developed a number of initiatives to help transform Edinburgh into an exemplar sustainable city. Alongside the Council’s Sustainable Edinburgh 2020 strategy and the Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP), in September of this year the Economy Committee agreed an approach to integrate sustainability principles into the Economic Strategy. Through the Sustainable Edinburgh 2020 strategy the Council has committed to ongoing collaboration with partner organisations to develop city-wide programmes specifically focused on this key area of sustainability and sets targets to ensure that by 2020 Edinburgh will have: n reduced carbon emissions by over 40% across the city; n more efficient energy consumption across all sectors by at least 12%; n more renewable energy with renewable energy technologies contributing to at least 40% of energy consumed in the city; n more low carbon transport using alternative technologies for transporting people and goods around the city;

n adapted to the unavoidable impacts of climate change in partnership with key stakeholders and local communities; and n increase our micro-generation capacity to 10%. Edinburgh’s SEAP aims to reduce the city’s dependence on expensive, imported and increasingly less available fossil fuels and to support Edinburgh’s citizens and communities to have a greater say in energy generation and use. Importantly, it sets out how Edinburgh will help meet local, national and European carbon dioxide emissions and energy reduction targets, which aim to tackle climate change and its harmful effects on people and places. This recent commitment by the Economy Committee to embed sustainability into the Economic Strategy is consistent with Edinburgh 2020 and SEAP and greatly strengthens both of these initiatives by firstly aiming to increase the potential for jobs growth and investment from the low carbon sector by: n raising awareness of Edinburgh’s credentials amongst investors.

n adopting Smart City concepts in city governance. To also support, through the Council’s existing employability work, school leavers in entering jobs within the sustainability sector by: n creating educational initiatives to ensure a workforce with suitable skills n conducting a more detailed analysis of the existing low carbon economy to identify and address key challenges, opportunities to capitalise, and scope for future development, support and intervention. And finally to assist private and third sector businesses and organisations in identifying and implementing their own sustainability measures, this will be achieved by: n continuing to provide business support on “green” matters, in particular the recent partnership between Business Gateway and Resource Efficient Scotland to provide quarterly workshops and seminars to help businesses reduce their costs through improved resource efficiency.

n encouraging the development of future technologies such as fuel cells, photovoltaic’s and wave power.

Company survey eases concerns about regulations change Polwarth company Vegware is involved in working with its customers and other businesses to highlight important issues – and, at the moment, a key focus is the incoming changes to the Trade Waste Regulations. The changes will mean that food businesses will be required to have a higher degree of separation of waste to enable more recycling. The business carried out a mini-survey and looked at six specific case studies in Edinburgh, examining attitudes to the regulation changes and the impact they might have. Staff followed this up with a roundtable discussion at their Polwarth offices involving food businesses, waste companies and regulators along with Zero Waste Scotland. The key message that came out of the work was that waste is an issue that cuts through all business hierarchies, interacts with human behaviour, affects all departments and affects use of space and, ultimately, the bottom line. It should be seen as a business development issue, not a specialist area reserved for environmental services people. Eilidh Brunton, Recycling Consultant, Vegware, said: “Boosting recycling goes straight onto the bottom line. Our study guided six Edinburgh food business sites to comply with the Regs, monitoring their costs and shift in attitude.

8

BC December 2013 January 2014

“We discovered that, far from being a cost burden they all feared initially, four of the six sites would actually reduce weekly costs by complying with the incoming waste Regs. “The other two would face initial cost increases but we found ways to turn this into a saving over time. All businesses in Scotland need to comply from 1st January 2014, but businesses should see them as an opportunity, not a burden. That is why we called our report ‘New Year’s Revelation’.” The study findings included: ·Biggest savings come from reducing general waste collections ·Switching from a macerator to food waste collections may seem to increase costs but will reduce energy and water use and maintenance costs ·Regulations likely to be cost neutral for businesses already with high recycling rates

Vegware makes eco catering disposables such as coffee cups, tableware and takeaway boxes from recycled or renewable materials. Its eco packaging is certified compostable – so, unlike most food service packaging, Vegware can be simply recycled with food waste after use. Vegware has enjoyed fifteen-fold UK growth in five years. The company’s bright green Polwarth office overlooking the Union Canal has seen staff numbers race from just two in late 2009 to the current 34. In 2013, the Edinburgh SME was named one of the UK’s 50 fastest growing businesses in the Fast 50 Awards. With operations in the US, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, the business is realising its ambition of becoming a global brand. The latest partnership sees Vegware products available in Dubai. The firm has won more than a dozen awards this year alone, including the Scottish Green Awards 2013. With global expansion,Vegware has also been recognised in the European Business Awards 2013/2014.

·Even businesses with initial cost increases can see savings once new recycling systems are in place ·Businesses who pre-pay for bags may have extra up-front costs but will save over time ·Grocers’ and supermarkets face the choice between staff time to unwrap food or higher collection costs for packaged food

Knowing your data: the key to auto-enrolment many businesses, this presents a challenge as there is often a very short time frame between receiving earnings for the pay reference period and closing payroll. Having a plan in place to manage this will make the whole process much easier. Although there’s a lot to do, early preparation and planning will make the journey as smooth as possible. For more information on what you need to do for auto-enrolment, speak to a financial adviser or visit www. goodtogopensions.com. Auto-enrolment has been introduced to get more people saving for retirement. Between October last year and 2018, every company in the UK must provide a workplace pension by their ‘staging date’. There’s a lot to do to get ready and early preparation is key. Making sure you’re on top of your data is one of the most significant factors in how successful auto-enrolment will be for your business. What data will you need?

The first step is to understand what type data you will need. For example, you will need every employee’s date of birth, earnings and National Insurance number. You’ll also need the date they joined the company, their email and postal address and whether they are already a member of an existing pension scheme. Please note, these are not the only pieces of data you will need. For more details, speak to your financial adviser. Where will you get your data from?

The on-going data challenge Perhaps the biggest challenge is what you need to do once autoenrolment is in place. Every pay reference period, you will need to assess who is eligible for auto-enrolment, calculate contributions for that period and make any changes to payroll before sending it. For

You’ll need to ensure your data is clean and in a workable format. The cleaner your data, the easier auto-enrolment will be. Some pension providers may require your data to be in a certain format. The merger will enable us to widen our talent pool and grow the businesses.”

Since it was formed 25 years ago, Park Brown International has developed a comprehensive global network in the fast-growing oil and gas sector. The Aberdeen-search and leadership consultancy has a sister company in Australia and recently opened a new office in Houston. For the foreseeable future the two companies will continue to trade under the two separate brands of FWB and Park Brown. The Ambassadors wear contemporary highland attire by Kinloch Anderson, kilt makers to Her Majesty The Queen, in cheviot, game keeper and gold tweeds mixed with gold satin trims and whisky coloured accents. Whisky enthusiasts can also ‘open up’ their whisky with a selection of Uisge Source waters from the three main regions of Scotland – Speyside, Islay and the Highlands. Working exclusively with SCOTCH, Uisge Source offers natural water which compliments each whisky region. Franck Arnold, General Manager at The Balmoral, said: “As Edinburgh’s landmark hotel, we are keen to showcase one of Scotland’s greatest exports: whisky. We set about transforming one of the hotel’s most intimate spaces into SCOTCH, where our young, passionate whisky ambassadors are looking forward to serving the finest of drams to the local community and guests alike for many years to come. ”

Bill said: “I know the key players very well, and negotiations to bring these two successful companies together have been reassuringly straightforward and that has reinforced the compelling logic of taking this step. It’s a bold move which I expect to be rewarding for both the team and their clients”.

Watermans claims double award win Personal injury claims specialist Watermans Solicitors has seen its investment in growth rewarded after it claimed two prizes at the prestigious Law Awards of Scotland. The Edinburgh-headquartered firm took the ‘Law Firm of the Year (under 40 fee earners)’ award at the 10th annual ceremony in Glasgow. Watermans, which was founded in 1999 and serves clients across Scotland, also picked up the ‘Up and Coming Firm of the Year’ prize. Senior partner Neil Waterman said the awards were welcome recognition of the company’s efforts to grow the business in recent years. “We are absolutely delighted with these accolades; it’s great recognition for the hard work and progress the firm has made in establishing itself as a major player in the Scottish legal sector, and in particular the personal injury market.

The company now employs 25 at its Leith head office, and is looking to continue recruiting top calibre staff as well as investing in new digital services that will make it a market leader in the personal injury sector.

Inspiring a Sustainable Capital City Half of humanity – 3.5 billion people – currently live in cities and by 2055 an estimated 75% of the world’s population will live in urban areas. Cities occupy just 2% of the Earth’s land, but account for over 70% of both energy consumption and carbon emissions.

to the equivalent period prior to competition. This has been a significant bonus for one of our country’s most precious resources. Another positive environmental impact has been the large carbon saving. Competition has helped reduce the water-related carbon emissions by 28,000 tonnes since 2008.

Yet, cities present the world’s population with the best chance of reducing our ecological footprint. Urban areas are uniquely positioned to lead the greening of the global economy through improvements in transport, energy, buildings, technology, water and waste systems, as well as producing a wide range of economic and social benefits.

It is widely accepted that innovation is driven by competition and the need to offer customers a better service with keener pricing and more tailored products. Business Stream for instance has increased the number of services on offer from six to over 60 in five years, while customer satisfaction has increased by 26 per cent.

Simply put, there is nothing more important for cities in the future than to ensure their developments are energy and resource efficient by taking advantage of the latest technologies and innovations from the private sector.

We have a wide range of solutions to help you take control of your water, save you money and improve your environmental performance in the process. From benchmarking your water use against similar businesses, to automatic consumption tracking, water saving devices and leak detection and repair, we have a solution to suit your organisation. Everything we do is geared towards helping customers better manage their water resources.

The opening of the Scottish business water market on 1 April 2008 to competition has seen a significant environmental benefit – businesses have used approximately 16 billion litres less of water in just five years compared

Whatever kind of business you have, understanding and managing your water usage effectively can save you money and time, reduce your risk and protect the environment. It is also another way to ensure you’re meeting your environmental responsibilities and creating a sustainable business. Finally, failure to comply with legislation set out to protect sewerage systems and the environment can carry significant fines. There are various ways to streamline and change your waste water or trade effluent, and the correct solution will depend on the current consumption figures, size of your site and sector-specific regulations that are in place. We can help you proactively manage your trade effluent through chemical and biological treatments, site surveys, health checks and the provision of hire equipment. Regardless of the size or complexity of your business’ requirements, we can help you make significant savings. So in our opinion, if you want to help build a sustainable capital city, a good place to start is with resource management; and an even better place to start with that is with the most precious resource of them all – water.

A sustainable airport for a sustainable city Over the past 12 months, Edinburgh Airport has welcomed more passengers than ever before, with more than six million people travelling through between May and October. While its priority is to ensure all passengers have the best experience possible, the airport also works hard to make sure it remains a sustainable contributor to the wider environment. David Wilson, Chief Operating Officer, said Scotland’s busiest airport is able to manage its sustainability commitments, whilst offering a great service to passengers. He said: “We’ve been working closely with a number of partners and organisations, including the National Air Traffic Control Service (NATS) and our airlines to help reduce the airport’s carbon emissions.

“In particular, we’ve been promoting the most fuel-efficient flying techniques for landing aircraft, which won the Best Environmental Initiative category at the 2012 Airport Operators Association Conference.” In March, the airport was placed highest out of any UK airport in the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency League Table, published annually by the Environment Agency. David said: “Our work is already bearing fruit and the fact that we have been ranked the highest of all the UK airports is a great boost and helps highlight the work we do to make our airport as carbon conscious as possible.” In 2012, Edinburgh Airport successfully gained a Carbon Masters Standard for recognition of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. It was the first airport in Scotland to receive such a standard. David said: “In addition to carbon awareness, we’ve also been developing ways to help reduce our electricity costs with LED lighting being installed in the baggage hall, as well as on all new advertising signage.”

Significant progress has also been made with the airport’s waste management processes with all food waste, totalling seven per cent of the overall waste produced, now being sent to a local anaerobic digestion facility and generated into electricity. Furthermore, between May and October, 100% of waste was diverted from landfill. Work in this area has also been recognised with Zero Waste Scotland awarding a grant of over £48,000, allowing for the installation of 75 new recycling bins throughout the terminal. The airport’s commitment to sustainability is not limited to recycling. It’s passionate about engaging with the local community. A quarterly newsletter is published and delivered to 16,500 homes and businesses to keep people updated on the latest news, route announcements and environmental objectives. The Edinburgh Airport Community Board also meets regularly to allocate funding to local projects and good causes. A dedicated noise insulation scheme has also been in operation since 2009, helping those most affected by aircraft noise in the surrounding area. “We realise the environmental impact of being a busy international airport can be significant. That’s why we’re committed to working with our airlines and business partners to minimise our effects on the environment and make sure we’re as energy efficient as possible,” said David.

Changes make pension system easier to use Changes to the automatic enrolment pension rules have been announced by the Pensions Minister Steve Webb. The changes will make it easier for future tranches of employers to enrol their workers into a pension scheme. Since the launch of automatic enrolment in October 2012, the Department for Work and Pensions has listened to feedback on how it has worked and what parts of the legislative framework could be improved. Steve Webb said: “Employers and our partners in the pensions and payroll industry have made a major contribution in delivering these landmark reforms since October last year. “Now, one year in, we want to build on this success as medium-sized employers prepare to automatically enrol their staff into a workplace pension. “These changes are aimed at streamlining the system and making it easier for employers to meet their duties.” The Government received 112 responses to its consultation launched early in 2013 and has now finalised amendments to the regulations. These changes include: • alternative definitions of pay reference periods for both assessing jobholder status and determining whether a scheme is a qualifying scheme • the automatic enrolment joining window is extended from one month to six weeks • the deadline for employers to provide information to individuals on their opt in and joining rights is extended to 6 weeks • the deadlines for registration and postponement notices fit with the extended joining window • the extended deadline for passing worker contributions to a pension scheme applies to all new joiners (including contract joiners)

in relation to the appropriate age, service limits and revaluation that apply in those schemes The majority of these changes were implemented as of 1 November 2013 with those on the joining window and registration deadlines due to come into force from 1 April 2014. The Government introduced the initiative to encourage more people to save for retirement. Starting with the largest firms, employers are required by law to pay into a workplace pension for staff who do not opt out. By May 2015, about 4.3 million people will be saving for their old age. The move was prompted by research which showed that 11 million people were not saving enough to achieve the pension income they are likely to want or expect in retirement. Less that one in three in adults contributed to a pension, while people are on average living longer - in the past 25 years, life expectancy at age 65 has increased by five years for men and three years for women Evidence from the Department for Work and Pensions suggests that, once automatically enrolled, less than one-third of people will take the active decision to opt-out.

• the opt out notice provisions make clear that schemes can customise notices • there is greater clarity and consistency concerning the requirements for defined benefit test schemes

The challenges of auto-enrolment Media coverage of workplace pensions is being ramped up as SMEs become affected. 2014 is pivotal - 25,000 businesses are expected to become subject to the new rules between April and July. If you haven’t thought about how you will deal with your new duties you may be running out of time. We’d like to highlight some common questions we’ve experienced and what it means for smaller employers. How will it affect my business? Time and money! The rules employers need to meet are complex (the Pensions Regulator’s (TPR’s) guidance is several hundred pages). You must understand processes for continual assessment, communication, opting in and out and the detailed records you must keep. Along with the time cost within your business, you’ll need to contribute. The minimum starts at 1% of qualifying earnings, rising to 3% by 2017. How will it affect my people? The rules are designed to cover almost all people in work in the UK, with most having to be enrolled automatically and most of the rest choosing to opt in. The minimum workers must contribute starts at 1% of qualifying earnings, rising to 4% by 2017. if people can opt in, can they opt out? Yes, but take care. Auto-enrolment was designed to take advantage of apathy! Workers must join a pension scheme before they can opt out. There are strong penalties for employers who encourage or ‘induce’ people to opt out. Don’t rely on your staff opting out! Experience across the UK suggests opt out rates of around 10%. i have a pension scheme – i’ll be fi ne. Unlikely. Auto-enrolment is as much about the process as the pension scheme, so you may still have to make changes.Your pension scheme must also meet certain criteria, so if it falls short you will need to amend the plan. Can i put it off? No. The latest date by which you must comply is set by the Government. There are options (three in fact!) to postpone part of your duties but these are to simplify administration not let you off the hook. Delaying is also a false economy - leaving less time may reduce your options, increase costs and incur fines.

right, i have enrolled my employees in the pension scheme- i’m all done Not exactly. Ongoing, you must assess your staff to ensure any changes in circumstances are reflected in contributions. You must also keep detailed records of all workers and adjustments - the regulator can inspect businesses to ensure compliance with new duties. if i don’t comply? Penalties - big ones! The regulator can inspect businesses and has a range of penalties available from £400 to escalating penalties of £50 to £10,000 per day depending on the size of employer. For example, for firms of 5-49 employees, the fine is £500 per day. Imprisonment is even a possibility!

Why speak to us? We provide impartial advice about the options available to you, can help you get your processes right and find the auto-enrolment solution that suits your business and people. In the right circumstances, we can even help reduce the costs to your business and boost your staff ’s savings. Automatic Enrolment – If only it was automatic… The Government has recognised that exhortations on their own are not enough and for many people it is a help if they are “nudged” (or perhaps a better phrase is, “shoved”) into a savings mode. Hence the setting up of its Automatic Enrolment initiative, under which some 11 million workers will be automatically enrolled into a workplace pension arrangement, and into which they, and crucially their employer, have to contribute at least a minimum amount. The Government is buoyed by the ‘success’ of Automatic Enrolment as they have seen much lower opt out rates than anticipated. However, this does not give the full picture as many employees are ceasing pension membership after the ‘opt out window’. The real test of success will be when SME’s have to start enrolling their employees throughout 2014 and 2015, before the requirements then move onto the micro employers.

So what lessons can we learn from the larger employers that have been through Automatic Enrolment and what challenges lie ahead. Firstly, the complicated rule have meant some larger employers have struggled to get their processes right and they have had to dedicate additional resources in HR, Payroll and Finance to make sure they comply. We have realised that Automatic Enrolment is not just about pensions; it is as much about processes. An employer will need a pension arrangement to put their employees into, but before they get to that point, there is a big administrative task that needs to happen. And this administrative burden is ongoing every time they run payroll, employers need to ensure they are following the rules. So the problem for many SME’s is that they do not have dedicated in house resource to devote time to this and they do not have the bargaining power of the larger corporate to establish competitively priced auto-enrolment pension schemes. Indeed, many of the traditional pension providers are not allowing some employers’ existing pension plans to be used for autoenrolment; citing ‘poor profitability’ as the reason.

There has been some new pension providers devoted to the Automatic Enrolment space. NEST is the ‘catch all’ provider as they have a public service obligation to accept all employers and employees. The problem is that it just provides the pension vehicle; it does not help manage the administrative side of Automatic Enrolment. There is also a “capacity crunch” coming; i.e. 30,000 employers will need to comply with the new rules during 2014 and there is a concern that pension providers will not have the resources to deal with the demand. SME’s need to ensure they plan well in advance of their staging dates. We have designed a consultancy light solution that assists employers with their Automatic Enrolment requirements and provides a market leading pension arrangement; www.barnett-waddingham.co.uk/ae And finally, Automatic Enrolment has solved one pension issue; it means people will start saving. However, it has not solved the pension crisis; which is that people need to save a lot more! Hopefully Automatic Enrolment is the catalyst for this; we will have to see.

Ease your auto enrolment burden October 2013 saw the UK passing through the first anniversary of the full introduction of the auto enrolment requirements. The burden of meeting legal obligations, including incurring the additional costs, amending payroll and pension routines, and getting employee communications correct now lands with small and medium size companies. Accordingly, getting the implementation spot on so the journey to staging date is as smooth as possible is paramount. Help with ticking everything on the auto enrolment checklist is available from increasingly experienced advisers, with the DC team at Punter Southall DC Consulting having a comprehensive A to Z map to guide 2014 “stagers” over the finish line. Key pointers to guide you on that path include: Cleansed data The data assessment routines underpinning auto enrolment will fall flat if your data is not in tip top condition – make sure there are no deficiencies in your HR and payroll data Providers Planning to use your current insured DC pension scheme for your non pensioned workforce? Get a head start with Auto Enrolment Between 2012 and 2018, all employers will be compelled to comply with new legislation, providing a workplace pension and making contributions for qualifying workers. These new duties will carry an administrative and a financial burden, so planning is vital to ensuring the impact on your organisation is minimised. At Gallagher Employee Benefits, we specialise in delivering Auto-enrolment (AE). We are working with numerous high profile employers in all industries from across the country, helping them prepare for their staging date and comply with new employer duties both at and indeed after staging. The first thing we do with clients is talk. These discussions allow us to understand how the business operates internally and allows many of the process changes and cost management options to be explored and agreed upon before we even start looking at the pension scheme. Remember, this piece of work is principally about complying with the new rules, the pension provider / scheme is secondary. In other words, don’t let the tail wag the dog. Secondly, although some of the payroll providers AE modules are not as advanced as we would like, they will get there over the next year or two as they develop their systems and issue upgrades and patches. Resources in this sector have been stretched to the limit with AE coming immediately on the back of RTI.

Being a full service consultancy firm, we find that AE itself is rarely the only aspect that needs attention. An unintended consequence of forcing pension scheme membership often means increases in Death in Service and Long Term disability (sometimes referred to as income protection or PHI) scheme membership. The subsequent increase in premium cost is one issue but dealing with temporary cover under these plans if an employee subsequently opts out of the pension, is another. Given that many firms are on tight deadlines to meet the new rules, the Pension Regulator and DWP have begun to introduce some easements into the legislation, but many pitfalls still exist and employers should be aware of their potential impacts. Our end-to-end consultancy service can provide your organisation with support at every stage of the project, including: n building a project plan identifying key tasks, milestones and risks to the organisation n working closely with key stakeholders in your Finance, HR, and I.T. departments n mitigating unnecessary costs n reviewing existing pension schemes n finding the right pension scheme

Whatever the needs of your business, Gallagher Employee Benefits has a tailored Auto-enrolment solution to help deliver in a compliant way, in budget and on time. Specialreport Creating a sustainable economy is not a “nice to have.” More and more businesses and individuals are fully recognising that sustainability must be an essential part of any planning for our future. Economically and environmentally, creating a sustainable economy in our Capital city will reap rewards, protecting the fabric of our city which is justifiably appreciated and admired around the world, whilst creating new opportunities and new knowledge and expertise. In addition, working towards sustainability can help businesses fully understand and control costs – energy efficiency has never been higher on the agenda. The vision of a model sustainable city is one the Chamber shares. We have led from the front – in seeking to place Edinburgh at the forefront of the low carbon debate through our involvement in the Scottish Low Carbon Investment Conference, in our leading private sector discussions through our collaboration with City of Edinburgh Council, and in our work helping to bring the Green Investment Bank to the city. In this special report, we look at how a number of how Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce’s partner businesses are doing their part to create a model sustainable Capital.

The information ebbs and flows as Stuart Wallace warms to his global theme – ports at the heart of economically and environmentally sustainable communities. The Scottish Divisional Director for Forth Ports narrates a neat history of the Port of Leith, and its continuing role at the heart of Edinburgh’s current and future economies, pointing out the many fundamentals that remain unchanged down through the centuries as well as the many things that have evolved. He remains convinced that a sustainable approach to business makes commercial, as well as environmental, sense – and outlines some of the many things being done day in and day out by his organisation to ensure costs are controlled in a way that benefits the business and the environment. And for Stuart, a sustainable city is one that can proudly display its “green” credentials built on a solid commercial foundation. He said: “I think defining ‘sustainable’ needs a two-pronged approach.Yes, we need to ensure that our green credentials are in order, but we also need to ensure that our businesses are modern, flexible, innovative, well connected and enduring. “The story of the Port of Leith has endured for centuries – it was created as the port for Edinburgh by Royal Charter in the 14th century – so you have to say that as businesses go it has certainly been long-lasting. “Successful and sustainable cities are built around transport hubs, with many – for example, London – focused originally on their ports providing international connections through sea travel. Those connections are what opened international trade. In Leith, much of

the early business was with France, in particular bringing in fine wine from Bordeaux and shipping our own produce over there. “We’ve seen shipbuilding, thriving docks employing many hundreds dealing with produce and goods coming from all over the world, through to land reclamation and modern housing and commercial development, such as the Scottish Executive building. All through time, ports have adapted to changing needs and demands. “They remain an industrial heartland close to the city. In Leith we are home to major manufacturers who supply, for example, coated pipes for the oil & gas industry to locations all over the world. North Sea oil and gas continue to be a key element of the business activity at the Port of Leith, with businesses that manufacture equipment through to the provision of facilities to support vessels that use Leith as a short to medium term base, usually involving the handling of specialist equipment on high tech vessels. It’s the way in which the businesses in Leith are able to link together that provides a long term sustainable solution for the end customer and demonstrates the port’s capability in the heart of the country’s capital city. We have one business at Leith which imports huge quantities of maize, mainly from France, for the whisky industry. All these centuries later, we are still trading with France, and whilst it is no longer fine wines, it is now an essential ingredient for our own whisky industry. These businesses provide skilled, engineering jobs. “In addition, we are one of the major gateways to Edinburgh for visitors from around the world. Our deep water port is one of the few that can handle large cruise liners. This year we have seen 82 vessels call at our Scottish ports,

bringing 96,000 visitors, and we continue to work with Edinburgh Chamber, Cruise Forth and others in this area. “And shipping remains not only a vital part of international trade, but one of its most environmentally friendly ways to move large quantities of goods around the world.

business sense. For example, we have long recycled waste. We are stepping up our efforts in the New Year, doing away with desk bins and instead staff will use separated waste bins in the corridor. We have been using LED lights, which have been well received by staff, in some locations in the port and this uses 20% of the energy the previous system used. “In other words, businesses are now viewing things that were once discarded as potential resources, and see energy efficiency as a must.” Leith also has the potential to be a key player in the offshore renewables market, with the port being identified in the Scottish Government’s National Renewables Infrastructure Plan as the number one key port in the development of the sector.

“While our business continues to adapt, we also have a duty of care to the environment – and good practice also makes excellent

Stuart said: “The future looks very exciting. There is no doubt that the renewables sector, particularly offshore wind, will be developed once the industry obtains greater certainty on

the energy market and technology becomes more tried and tested. Leith is well placed to play a major role in the development of the sector, and we are talking to all those involved, whilst continuing to develop and retain our existing customer base in the port. “Edinburgh is very much at the centre of this. Organisations like the Chamber are helping pull interested parties together. We have the Green Investment Bank headquartered in the city. We have major banks and utility companies and our universities are doing tremendous research and producing highly skilled people. “We need to continue working together to ensure we get the most sustainable Capital city that we possibly can. When we do, The Port of Leith will still be serving the city.”

When going green makes good commercial sense Construction has long had a reputation as a sector that finds it difficult to be sustainable but for some companies the opposite is true. They have embraced the green revolution and are making it work to their advantage. Take Skanska, which is repeatedly proving that the sector can be profitable while at the same time hitting green targets in every aspect of its operations in construction and engineering. The approach instinctively appeals to Skanska because the company is based in Scandinavia, where care for the environment has long

been a way of life for businesses. Alex MacLeod, Operations Director, Skanska Construction Central & Regions, and also President of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, said:” The Skanska Colour Palette™ was introduced in 2009 as our strategic framework and primary communication tool for Green Construction & Development (Green Business). And we measure all our projects against this.

From vanilla to deep green Vanilla = Compliance. The construction process and/or product performance is in compliance with applicable laws, codes and standards. Green = Beyond Compliance. The construction process and/or product performance is beyond compliance, but not

yet at a point where it can be considered to have a near-zero environmental impact. Deep Green = Future Proof. The construction process and our product performance has a near-zero impact on the environment and thereby future proofs our projects. “Being green is part of the culture of the company and it stretches right across the business. “As an example all our fleet, company and private cars will comply with a Co2 limit of 130g/km by the end of next year. It’s not simply a case of doing it because a rule dictates it. We embrace a green culture because we want to. “We also follow a green procurement policy. Every company in our supply chain has to complete a prequalification process so that we know how they operate.

Specialreport Rather than bringing materials in from a long distance, we buy them from local companies where we can. This ensures that we are not only helping protect the environment but we are investing locally. To encourage green practice, Skanska runs a competition, its Supply Chain Green Solution Award that provides the industry supply chain with the chance to showcase innovative green products or ways of working and be recognised as a leader in their field. Skanska itself was named as the UK’s Greenest Company in the Sunday Times 2010 Best Green Companies Awards and took the overall prize for all sectors in 2011. But it’s not just about ‘doing the right’ thing; being green has hard-edged commercial advantages as well. Alex said: ”The fact that we are green appeals to companies who may use our services. “We are not ashamed to say that we are trying to commercialise green.Yes, we want to do things that protect the planet but why should we not use this to sustain the business as well” Skanska also sees green potential growth in work being carried out across Edinburgh and other towns ands cities to revive old buildings, a process known as retrofitting. Green Retrofitting is becoming more prevalent as companies make sure that buildings often constructed in an age when green considerations were unheard of have a reduced demand for energy when their refurbishment has been carried out. Alex said: “We see great potential in Green Retrofitting and have developed a number of systems that allow us to assess old building and then upgrade them to meet and beat current requirements.

Inspiringleaders Ambition the key as bank starts work Rob Cormie is a man on a mission. The Group Operations Director at the Green Investment Bank wants to see Scotland’s Capital as the model sustainable city, envied and admired throughout the world. The Edinburgh resident and well-known business figure is no idle dreamer. He knows such ambition needs to be funded and would cost. The benefits, he maintains, will far be of such significance that any investment needed would be wise. And he fears that if we are unable to grasp the nettle, there are others around the world who are already beginning to stake their claims. He is hopeful that the city can rise to the challenge – provided the Government, local authority and private sector are prepared to get behind it. Rob points to the city’s ability to work together – Edinburgh saw off tough competition to secure the Green Investment Bank when a consortium of public and private sector organisations, largely initiated by Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, made a powerful representation and case to the UK Government. The result? The Bank, the first of its kind, is based in Morrison Street with £3.8 billion of tax-payers money to accelerate investment and progress in a sector growing year on year throughout the world.

His ambition is shared by others – including Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce – and there are talks ongoing to look at ways of delivering a truly successful and sustainable city economy. But Rob maintains that delivering it will involve a genuine willingness to put heads above parapets, to stand up for what is right, and to recognise and then grasp the economic opportunity that environmental awareness and protection will bring. He said: “To be clear, the Green Investment Bank has committed over £700 million to projects throughout the UK in its first full year of operation, with more in the pipeline. We have a double bottom line – the need to green and profitable not green or profitable. We also have to mobilise other capital – to date our £700 million has leveraged an additional £2 billion from the private sector, so a for every pound of our capital three more comes from third parties. “I understand that delivering a model sustainable city is not going to be done through charitable means. It needs to make economic sense, and I believe it does. “We are not alone in our thoughts as can be seen by New York launching its own Green Investment Bank and a city wide LED street light programme. It is too easy to find excuses not to make the necessary changes and we could learn much from the attitude of those in New York and Sydney. “I also understand that Edinburgh is a World Heritage Site, that it has all kinds of potential barriers – but only if we treat them that way. If we can creatively deal with all of these issues and still deliver a model sustainable city, the knowledge and expertise we will

have gained will provide a major economic opportunity. If we can invent the television I am pretty sure we can solve the street lighting conundrum.” “Already, we are seeing major companies involved in the sector locate in and around Edinburgh. In fact from our new office you can see the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine located in the Forth off Levenmouth. This is a £70m investment by Samsung, which creates jobs and acts as a platform for the latest generation of offshore wind projects in Scotland and the UK. “We should also be excited about energy efficiency and waste-to-energy, and in the city we have superb universities doing fantastic work in these fields and with fabulous engineering skills and pedigrees. “We have to help deliver ambitious targets, but one of the key ways to do this will be through changing behaviours – in workplaces and in homes. We can help finance better, cleaner ways to generate our energy, but we can also use less through increased energy efficiency. “Wouldn’t it be fantastic if Edinburgh was to have the courage and foresight to build sustainability into the fabric of its daily life – to look at LED street-lighting, building sustainability into building control regulations, pioneering the retro-fit of historic buildings? “We can do it, if we have the will and we can create the necessary frameworks. If we don’t – someone else will. And that would be a terrible shame, and a missed opportunity.”

“To be clear, the Green Investment Bank has committed over £700 million to projects throughout the UK in its first full year of operation, with more in the pipeline.” 28

Asktheexpert What is the difference between a logo and a brand? The answer has a lot to do with the job that the logo needs to do, how and where the design is to be used, in which mediums; print, online, vehicles liveries, on shopfronts etc? No matter how small it starts out, the whole point of having a logo is to differentiate your product or service from the rest, making it more recognisable in the customer’s mind. Not just making it memorable but imbuing it with qualities that make it an easy choice instead of a competitor, even at a premium price. Once you have achieved that, you will have developed brand equity, therefore it is now a brand. The trick is to build an identifiable brand with the logo as its cornerstone, so for consumers the logo becomes the symbol of the brand. The brand is much more than a typeface and an icon. A large part of why we buy is down to emotional reasons; why we choose to pay a premium for one product or service over another is usually down to the power and success of the brand. The best brands are well established in our minds, quietly oozing confidence and superiority or other qualities that needs to be designed into the logo. However, it is the whole product experience that builds the brand up in our mind, not just how and where the brand badge appears. The colour palette, the supporting typefaces and the tone of voice used must reinforce our brand expectations. It is rarely a happy accident as there will be a strategy behind that brand development as part of the company business plan. Brands can evolve but gradually, rather than by shocking and potentially risking alienating existing users. When Starbucks changed its logo to remove their name, they offended a large number of customers who had a long relationship with and felt ownership of the old logo. The shock did not last long but it shows the importance of just how a rebranding is implemented. Clients with a deeper understanding of marketing and brand value don’t just tick the

30

BC December 2013 January 2014

box and rest on the laurels. They need the logo to evolve and retain its relevance and that takes management and keeping an eye on their competitive set. In marketing, it is said that by doing nothing you don’t just stand still you actually go backwards as your competitors adapt and change with the market. Although brands are somewhat intangible but they do have real asset value and currently many of the world’s most famous brands are valued in the billions. But don’t assume that you need to be big to be a brand; every member company in the Chamber of Commerce should treat itself as a brand.

Start by taking an objective look at your own company communications from the logo to sales literature and the company website. Then take a look at those of your competitors and ask some searching questions. Even a DIY audit is a very worthwhile exercise to go through at least on an annual basis. At this point, it may be time for some professional input but at least you will know if you are in need of evolution or revolution.

Counting down to the new Waste Regulations A variety of user-friendly, informative resources are available for free online to ease the transition to the new Regulations.Video case studies demonstrate how organisations of different sizes in a variety of sectors have put systems in place and trained staff in preparation for January. There is also a frequently-asked-questions database which provides instant answers to common questions on waste management and processes. A rural postcode finder helps businesses to determine whether they are required to separate food waste under the Regulations or whether they are exempt. Scottish organisations are preparing for the Waste (Scotland) Regulations. As the deadline for the new Regulations approaches, businesses across the country are putting waste management, in particular recycling up their agendas. From 1 January 2014 all organisations operating in Scotland, big and small, will have to recycle their plastic, metal, glass, paper and card or risk a fine. Most food businesses will also have to recycle their food waste. By auditing their waste streams, many companies can find easy ways to reduce costs. Nationally, there are potential savings of £192 million, especially when you consider that Scotland is paying £95 million in landfill tax but that we could recover raw materials valued at £97 million from the materials currently being thrown away. Many businesses are already ahead of the game in preparing for the Regulations and have realised that good waste management makes good businesses sense. How an edinburgh restaurant gets waste regs ready. Timberyard, an artisan restaurant in Edinburgh, has blazed a trail with its waste management techniques. Recycling more than 95% of its waste, the restaurant minimises the financial cost of waste created. Good kitchen management means that very little food is thrown out and all vegetable waste is composted, providing the nutrients needed to grow salad leaves and herbs for the restaurant’s use in its own grounds. Additionally, Edinburgh tap water is filtered, chilled and offered at no charge to its guests either still or carbonated in reusable bottles; this reduces glass waste and the carbon footprint of bottled mineral water. Andrew Radford, proprietor of the restaurant, commented: “We have been able to reduce our general waste including food, paper, glass and cans through good housekeeping, implementing measures including composting waste vegetables and reusing materials as much as possible”. resource effi cient scotland support for organisations. Resource Efficient Scotland, a new programme being delivered by Zero Waste Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government, is helping businesses prepare for the new Regulations. In the first instance, Resource Efficient Scotland encourages businesses to speak to their local authority or waste contractor to discuss their service provision for January 2014.

Shredall Scotland just keeps expanding... The Shredall Group was established in 1997, pioneering onsite shredding across the U.K. Today they are one of the largest, independent, privately owned companies within the market sector. They have successfully traded with over 5,000 clients nationwide, disposing of confidential data; including paper, uniforms, I.T equipment, hard drives and other magnetic media. Shredall is a well established, thriving, family run business with Scottish heritage. The company is continuously growing and they now operate a nationwide service from depots in Scotland, Nottingham and London, allowing them to cover the whole of the U.K. Shredall Scotland is headed by Scotland Confidential Operations Manager

Brian McCulloch. He has a reliable friendly team based in Lanarkshire and they service businesses and individuals in Glasgow, Sterling, Falkirk, Livingstone and Edinburgh with vehicles regularly routed into Aberdeen and Dundee amongst all other cities in Central Scotland and everywhere in-between. Shredall Scotland has serviced the whole of Scotland and area’s in the north of England. Brian has worked in the industry for many years pioneering mobile shredding in Scotland, Brian loves working within a family business and has bought his own 2 son’s to work for him! Brian and his team are all very passionate about what they do, “Our services can be tailor made to suit your data needs, reducing costs, whilst ensuring your business adheres to the Data Protection Act. Our years of experience have enabled our clients to put their trust in us.We are still happily servicing the same customers we started trading with many years ago.” He continues – “Legally everyone has to destroy their confidential waste and failure to comply can lead to significant penalties of up to £500,000 for serous breaches – we identity theft rife in the U.K and Europe, it is paramount that businesses select the right contractors and do not neglect to dispose of their confidential waste securely!” Brian works closely with Managing Director of the Shredall Group Lloyd Williams and together their key skills are to see opportunity and make it reality. His team have pioneered the industry sector always making them the leaders in their division. They have a clear goal to keep growing in size through expanding the companies’ range of services. As the company has developed new market sectors from their core business of on-site shredding with off-site document shredding just around the corner, they have complimented that with exploring and creating an IT destruction section including hard drive destruction and x-ray destruction. The sudden growth of Shredall Scotland means that the confidential waste and recycling company is ever-expanding.They are expecting the delivery of a brand new on-site shredding

machine this month, which has a shredding output of 2000kgs per hour in accordance with the European Standard for witnessed shredding at their customer’s doors. The 18 tonne mobile shredding machines are the most up to date on-site shredding machines in the world. Brian McCulloch comments “With the busy year we have had and each month getting busier and busier from our depot - Glasgow, Edinburgh and surrounding towns, we felt the need for another lorry. This comes just 7 months after we bought a similar vehicle and another van to add to our fleet for the OFFSITE collection services of materials that are then shredded back at our premises within 24 hours. All of these new additions have brought in new staff extending our happy family.” Shredding on-site or off-site can be made on an adhoc or scheduled basis. Shredall Scotland’s vehicles visit your premises, at a predetermined time, and perform onsite shredding of your confidential paper or remove it to our premises for shredding. The on-site destruction process can be witnessed in the truck if required or for off-site by a member of your staff at our premises and carried out by a specifically trained Shredall Scotland operative. On completion of either shredding service Shredall will issue a certificate of destruction showing the weight and details of the collection whereupon an invoice is raised and sent to the client. The shredding machines are fast, cost effective and environmentally friendly. Operating on less power than previous machines they will greatly reduce emissions and electricity costs, falling in line with Shredall Scotland’s ISO14000 environmental commitments. Making a difference in Europe Since the last European elections, the rules of the game have changed. The European Parliament now has more power, both to set the political direction of Europe and over the day-to-day decisions which affect us all. A more powerful European Parliament means more influence for everyone, more ability to deal with our problems, more ability to change what needs changing, more assertiveness to conserve what we want to keep. The European Parliament now decides on the European laws that affect you, across the board. On how your money is spent from the EU (European Union) budget, across the board. We must agree to the financing of the EU for years to come, looking at the collective interest of Europeans. And after the next elections it is your parliament who will elect the head of Europe’s executive, based on your wishes, as expressed in these elections. This time it’s different. Together we now have more power to make a difference. The European Parliament and you. Together we can act, react and have an impact. Act These are turbulent times in the history of Europe. For many people in Europe, these are hard times. As times have changed, so have we. The European Parliament now has more power in shaping Europe than ever before. And that gives you more power to make things happen. You can influence the decisions

that touch your own life as well as the lives of over 500 million people. You can start something or end something. Ask for more or ask for less. You can act and take all matters big and small into your own hands. Choose which Europe you want. In the end, you decide what happens. Or doesn’t happen. The European Parliament represents each and every one of you and acts on your behalf. Our decisions are based on what matters to you. No, not everything can happen overnight, but one thing is for sure: together we can get it done. React You can make a real difference. Hold on to what’s worth keeping, change what needs changing. Or question and criticise. Share your thoughts and react. The European way is not about one vision or one goal; it’s about giving every opinion a fair chance.

of the next generations too. Each of your actions and reactions ultimately lead to results. The decisions we make together have an impact on the day-to-day life of over half a billion European citizens. The European Parliament’s responsibility is to make it work for everyone, including you. Not just to make a real difference for you, but with you. Elections to the European Parliament will be taking place in the UK on 22nd May 2014. Questions about the EU? Europe Direct can help. The information centre is based at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce. Direct Dial: 0131 221 3178 Email:europedirect@edinburghchamber.co.uk Web:http://www.edinburghchamber.co.uk/

The European Parliament is here to react to your demands and to fight for the things you really care about. Our job is to listen to the multitude of voices in Europe and provide real answers. We will face every challenge and offer solutions that make sense. Impact Through the European Parliament, you have more power than you think. You make a direct impact on everyone’s future and more importantly: on your own and on the future

By Bill Magee Scottish Business Technology Writer of the Year

Innovative use of technology for charity It always fills me with a sense of wonder on discovering an organisation that uses technology in such an innovative way for the lasting benefit of others. Edinburgh’s Drake Music Scotland (registered charity SCO26908) relies entirely on grants and donations from across the public and private sectors as it removes any perceived notions that disability is a barrier to making music. The initiative is the nation’s leading arts organisation with an emphasis on workshops, training and tuition providing music-making opportunities for people with disabilities. Patrons include Dame Evelyn Glennie, the Proclaimers and Adele Drake.

44

BC December 2013 January 2014

Such expertise involves music technology and specialist teaching methods to support people of all ages and a wide range of disabilities to play, learn and compose music independently. Since 1997, Drake Music has created such opportunities across Scotland for more than 7,000 children and adults. Using both conventional instruments and inclusive technologies, a wide range of education and training projects enable the participants to make music to whatever level they aspire. Each project is led by a growing number of talented and experienced professional musicians. I was alerted to this great work by core team member and music technology

officer Rick Bamford, who has designed the school’s new recording studio. Now, the organisation’s commission “Technophonia”, written by Oliver Searle of the Scottish Music Centre, has been nominated for a prestigious British Composer Award (Community/Education category). If you are looking for a tremendously worthwhile cause to back over the festive period and into the New Year, look no further. www.drakemusicscotland.org/ Catch my Daily TechPost (most days!) on Twitter @billamagee plus regular tech microblog at www.KIltr.com

Inthespotlight Company name: registers of scotland Who? sheenagh Adams, Keeper of the registers of scotland Website: www.ros.gov.uk

1. What were you doing between 10 and 12 this morning?

7. What do you like to do on your spare time?

I was working on a paper about completing the Land Register. I am keen to ensure Scotland gets the economic benefits that a completed Register brings.

I like visiting historic buildings (degree in mediaeval history and a Linlithgow resident) and reading fiction; I don’t like going to the gym. However, I seem to do a lot more of the latter than the former.

2. What do you see as your job’s biggest challenge? Ensuring that we implement the Land Registration etc. (Scotland) Act 2012 successfully, that we continue to deliver excellent service to our customers, and that we respond positively to the digital agenda.

8. What qualities do you need to see in your employees? I want people who care about what they do and who try their best. Work is not an exam – 51% is not good enough. I forgive mistakes but not a “that’ll do” attitude.

3. What do you consider your biggest business triumph?

9. in business, is it more important to be liked or successful?

Delivering the fastest, most accurate registration service since the Land Register was established in 1979 by focusing staff and processes on the needs of our customers.

To be successful (but they are not mutually exclusive). You are there to deliver your organisation’s objectives and add value. Being liked is a bonus; being respected is essential.

4. Do you have any money-saving business tips?

10. What is the one piece of advice you would give to others trying to reach the top?

Yes – always make sure you fully understand what each element of your business costs to deliver and constantly look for ways in which you can provide better value.

5. What do you believe are the 3 key stages on your career ladder? (i)Having a really good education (Harris Academy, Dundee and St Andrews University); (ii) getting to understand why good public services matter when working as a welfare rights officer in the Gorbals; and (iii) joining the Civil Service in 1990.

6. Where do you stand on work/life balance? In theory, I am all in favour but I take my Blackberry everywhere, even to the beach at Playa Flamenca.

Always try to build a team that has the skills and attributes needed to deliver your objectives and work hard to support each other.

11. Who is your hero? A lady called Mary Hope, a senior manager I met when I worked in housing. She combined charm, ability and a steely determination to deliver quality services and to share her knowledge and expertise.

13. other than your current position, what would be your dream job? I would love to manage the Verdant Works in Dundee, the story of the city’s jute industry. Both my grandmothers were weavers and I want people to remember what life was like for women in their time.

14. Who (living or dead) would you invite to a fantasy dinner party? Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Commander Vimes and Lord Vetinari – appropriately enough all fantasy characters. I love fantasy fiction and I want to register land on the Discworld. (Terry Pratchett novels for the uninitiated.)

15. outside of business, what is the most important thing in your life? My daughters, Caroline and Lyndsey. They are beautiful and bright and will be an asset to the tourism and music industries respectively when they have completed their studies. Other than them, it has got to be my Kindle.

12. Any business (or other) projects you would like to plug? Registers of Scotland is a major source of information about land, property and people. Our customers are in the public, private and third sector. We would like to talk to you to see if or how we can help you in your business.
