Elevating the stride First ever race management programme in India

T

he landscape of distance running in India marked a major watershed moment as the nation hosted its premier Race Management Programme in Hyderabad. Held alongside the action-packed NMDC Hyderabad Marathon Race Weekend from August 29 to August 31, 2026, the three-day event brought together over 40 key race organizers, race directors, and athletic movement leaders from across the country, Thailand & Nepal. Co-hosted by Hyderabad Marathon and AIMS, the initiative provided unprecedented access to global best practices in endurance event organization. Event was supported by Hyderabad Runners, Ifinish, Oneglint & Park Hyatt. Delegates received hands-on exposure to the live infrastructure of the NMDC Hyderabad Marathon, blending direct operational field visits with strategic discourse. At the Hitex Exhibition Grounds, participants surveyed the NMDC Sports Expo to analyze race kit distribution workflows, runner interaction zones, and commercial stall engagements. Start line operations were evaluated at People’s Plaza, where attendees “Understanding the broader ecosystem of road running was the biggest highlight for us. Vivek Singh’s session on leveraging digital media, securing meaningful sponsorships, and embedding philanthropy as a core pillar provided crucial business insights. Paired with Ulf Saletti’s masterclass on how Stockholm coordinates seamlessly with police, city authorities, and tourism alongside AIMS and World Athletics standards, this program offered a world-class perspective on scaling a race sustainably.” Deepan Francis, Chennai Runners & Fresh Works Chennai Marathon

analyzed critical entry point management, VIP movement protocols, runner corral structuring, and flag-off logistics. The field visits concluded at Gachibowli Stadium, where focus shifted to finish point management, including medical deployments, recovery area logistics, refreshment nodes, elite runner handling, and post-race baggage systems.

“Hearing Rut speak about how Bangsaen, Thailand was transformed into one of the world’s finest running events from scratch in just twelve years was profoundly inspiring. It proved that with total focus on a seamless runner experience, any region can build a world-class marathon destination. The Hyderabad workshop was packed with actionable intelligence, global benchmarking, and immense practical value for race directors across India.” Dr.Vinay Tiwari , The Great Chhattisgarh Run Race Director & Run Club Founder

Beyond the technical track walks and operational analysis, fostering strong peer connections was central to the gathering. On Sunday, August 30, race organizers gathered for an exclusive networking dinner. The evening provided a relaxed atmosphere for directors and movement leaders from across India to exchange personal insights, discuss regional challenges, and build collaborative partnerships aimed at strengthening the country’s broader running ecosystem.

Bréal honoured at launch of Global Marathon Day A

IMS has funded the full restoration of Michel Bréal’s grave and named him Founder Emeritus, launching September 15 as an annual global ‘Marathon Day.’ The restoration was jointly organised by AIMS, ARTMARATHON, and the Michel Bréal Society. The date marks the anniversary of the letter Bréal wrote to Pierre de Coubertin proposing what became the marathon for the 1896 revival of the ancient Olympic Games — and, in the years since, the world’s most widely run race distance. Bréal, a professor at the Collège de France and one of the leading classical philologists of his era, was not a runner or a sports official. He sat at Coubertin’s right at the closing banquet of the Sorbonne Congress on June 23, 1894, where the modern Olympic Games were formally founded after nearly fifteen centuries of dormancy. On 15 September of that year, writing from a hotel room in Glion, Switzerland, he wrote to Coubertin: “If you go to Athens, you might try to see if a race cannot be organised from Marathon to the Pnyx. That would have an antique flavour… As for me, I request the honour of donating the ‘Marathon Cup.’” (Michel Bréal, letter to Pierre de Coubertin, 15 September 1894) Coubertin embraced the idea. The 1896 Athens programme listed a “running event called ‘Marathon,’” and Bréal personally commissioned and funded the winner’s silver trophy from a Paris jeweler. It was awarded to Spyridon Louis, a Greek substitute runner who became the first Greek Olympic champion. The trophy remained in the Louis family for over a century before selling at Christie’s in London on April 18, 2012, for £541,250, and was acquired by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to remain on public display in Greece.

first time this title has been awarded. “AIMS honours the historical origins of the marathon and works to ensure that Michel Bréal’s legacy is permanently acknowledged. Therefore, it is our intention to celebrate a global ‘Marathon Day’ every year on September 15th,” said Paco Borao, President, AIMS. With this year’s ceremony, AIMS intends to establish 15 September as an annual global “Marathon Day” going forward. The

programme included welcome remarks from Paco Borao; Prof. Heinz-Helmut Lüger, President of the Michel Bréal Society; and Stefan Delfs of the German Embassy. Henrietta Parsons, Bréal’s great-great-granddaughter, delivered a family tribute.

AIMS had previously contributed to routine maintenance of the grave in 2012; this year’s commitment is significantly larger in scope, funding a full restoration and new memorial stone rather than upkeep alone. In recognition of his singular role in creating the event, AIMS conferred on Bréal the honorary designation of “Founder Emeritus” — the

Keynote remarks followed from Alexander Kitroeff, Professor Emeritus of History at Haverford College, on the marathon’s significance to modern Greece, and from Horst Milde, founder of the Berlin Marathon, on Bréal’s influence on that race. The ceremony was moderated by Benedikt Morandi, ARTMARATHON president, and Hans W.

AIMS NEWS

“AIMS honours the historical origins of the marathon and works to ensure Michel Bréal’s legacy is permanently acknowledged, celebrated every year through a global ‘Marathon Day’ on September 15th.” — Paco Borao, President, AIMS Bréal’s 1894 letter to Coubertin

‘Father of the marathon’ recognised after 130 years ■ By Jon Michael Boka, RunBangla International September 15, 2026, turned out to be a strange but poetic match for the occasion: cloudless, sun-bleached, and unseasonably warm — the kind of afternoon that felt closer to Marathon or Athens than to a Paris cemetery in mid-September. Giessen, deputy chairman of the Michel Bréal Society, followed by a press conference and a viewing of the restored tomb. AIMS, which represents 470 of the world’s leading marathons and distance races across over 120 countries, has long championed recognition of the sport’s history. Michel Bréal’s contribution — inventing an event without ever competing in one — remains one of the most distinctive founding stories in modern sport.

Just before 2pm, a group of roughly twenty-five arrived at Montparnasse for a ceremony funded by AIMS: the formal restoration of Michel Bréal’s grave, his naming as the organisation’s first-ever Founder Emeritus, and the launch of an annual global “Marathon Day” in his honour. It was a small crowd for what it represented — leadership from three international organisations, a delegation from the scholarly society devoted to Bréal’s memory, and members of his own family, several generations removed. Every marathon run today, from the largest major to the smallest rural course, exists because a French linguist who never once laced up a running shoe put an idea in a letter, written from a Swiss hotel room, 132 years ago this September. Bréal was present at the Sorbonne in 1894 when Pierre de Coubertin’s Congress formally revived the Olympic Games — but it was a letter he wrote three months later, on holiday in Glion, that created the race entirely: “If you go to Athens, you might try to see if a race cannot be organised from Marathon to the Pnyx,” he wrote. “As for me, I request the honour

of donating the ‘Marathon Cup.’” Bréal never saw his race run. He stayed home in France; on race day, the International Olympic Committee’s president sent him a telegram with the result. For 130 years, that debt went largely unrepaid — Bréal’s name faded even as his invention grew into a global phenomenon run by tens of millions. AIMS has now funded the grave’s complete restoration and confirmed its intent to establish 15 September as an annual “Marathon Day” going forward. “On behalf of the millions of women and men marathoners all around the world,” AIMS President Paco Borao told the gathering, “thank you Michel, thank you Pierre, and thank you all involved, one way or another, in this marvellous way of life.” There’s a linguistic footnote embedded in Bréal’s own letter that wouldn’t surface fully until a family member pointed it out at the ceremony itself: in 490 B.C., the word “Marathon” literally meant nothing more than “fennel field.” By naming his proposed race after that place, Bréal — who had also invented the modern academic study of semantics — gave the word an entirely new meaning, one so complete that people now casually describe any gruelling ordeal, athletic or otherwise, as “a real marathon” without a second thought. Recognising him properly, it turns out, took a marathon of its own. This September, at last, someone crossed the finish line.

AIMS NEWS CHILDREN’S SERIES

A thousand children, one start line: how Songkhla opened its marathon to the next generation At 6:30 on the Saturday morning of Songkhla Marathon weekend, Chalatat Road looked like a school assembly had wandered onto a race course. More than 1,000 pupils from Songkhla’s municipal schools, most of them with a parent holding one hand and a race number in the other, lined up at the same start gantry the marathon field would use the next day.

Thailand’s second year of the AIMS Kids Series added a new format — a free 1 km run for schoolchildren inside an existing AIMS member race. More than 1,000 turned up

The AIMS Kids Series Songkhla was Thailand’s first attempt at an integrated children’s event — one that borrows the infrastructure of an AIMS member race rather than building its own. The start line, the finish, the medical cover, the volunteers and the sound system all belonged to the Songkhla Marathon Organising Committee. What the Kids Series added was the simplest possible race: one kilometre, no timing, no age groups, and an AIMS shirt and medal for every child who crossed the line. “We wanted to see whether a member race could add a thousand children on race weekend without adding a thousand problems,” says Rut Jiroaj, AIMS Board Member for Thailand and ASEAN, who leads the series. “The answer was yes. The organising committee had everything already. Our

job was to bring the schools, the shirts and the medals.” The schools came because Songkhla City Municipality asked them to. Entry was free, and the municipality’s endorsement turned a running event into a school outing — teachers signed up whole classes, and parents came to run alongside. Volunteers from TMPSA, the Thai race organisers’ association, and the We Run Thailand community handled the corrals and the finish. The result was a start line with a different sound to it: more laughter than nervous chatter, a few tears at the back, and a finish where the medal mattered more than the clock. The municipality has already committed to co-organise a larger edition in 2027. Songkhla was the second of two Thai events on the same weekend. The following morning, inland in Thung Song, the AIMS

Kids Relay ran its second edition — 150 teams of five in a 1 km relay by age group, 100 mother-and-child pairs and 30 children with special needs, close to 1,000 young runners in all. Where Thung Song is a standalone event that a town builds and owns, Songkhla shows the other route: a member race that opens its doors for one extra hour on Saturday. Between them, the two events reached around 2,000 children. AIMS funded shirts and medals for 1,000; local partners, encouraged by what they saw in 2025, covered the rest. “Every member race already has a start line and a finish line,” says Rut. “Songkhla proved that is most of what you need. The rest is a phone call to the municipality.”

AIMS RunVibes webinar series updates

I

n July James Thie hosted the third AIMS RunVibes webinar, focused on women’s running and building sustainable, inclusive communities. We welcomed four panellists: Liliana Uljas (Tallinn Marathon and Tallinn Women’s Run), Fransçoise Nehme (Beirut Marathon Association), Tina Shaire, (Nigerian legal expert and ultra marathoner), and Saki Mitsuda (Nagoya Women’s Marathon). The panel discussed how grassroots communities had transformed women’s lives, imagined an ideal marathon for women by 2030, weighed whether running could genuinely change society, and considered how the sport could adapt to women rather than the reverse. Panellists shared stories of participants who became leaders themselves and covered topics like women-only races and safety. Each proposed one idea from their city worth copying worldwide. The webinar closed

with predictions for 2036 headlines, before James thanked the panel and previewed the next session on technology and data in running events. September’s RunVibes webinar brought together three leading voices in road running to explore how technology, AI, and analytics are reshaping the sport. Yu Kurosaki (Director and President, R-bies, Inc.), Shahrizan Saad (founder of Langkawi Runners and Race Director of the Langkawi International Half Marathon) and Alex Rose (Co-founder and COO of Let’s Do This) joined for a wide-ranging 60-minute discussion spanning four segments: AI’s

role in the runner experience, a fully digitalfirst event by 2035, data-driven operational efficiency, and where organisers should invest now. The panel also tackled harder questions around data ownership, digital inclusion, and race integrity. Yet for all the talk of technology, one message came through clearly: the human touch must never be lost. Road running remains, at its heart, about personal connection, and technology’s real value lies in freeing up time to deepen it. To catch up with any of the previous webinars head to Youtube and search AIMs Runvibes or scan the QR code. The next live webinar is on Wednesday 18 November at 2pm CET, where the focus is on all community elements of running and events. DISTANCE RUNNING | 2026 EDITION 4

AIMS NEWS MARATHONEUM

Standing ovation for Horst Milde at AIMS Congress Berlin Marathon founder leads tribute to president of Berlin Forum for Sports History

H

orst Milde — the coordinator of the AIMS Marathon Museum “Marathoneum” in Berlin paid tribute to Gerd Steins, President of the Berlin Forum for Sports History, who has been researching the history and development of running for decades. AIMS is the only sports organization that researches its own history in this way. Gerd Steins (a former teacher) has documented this in the MARATHONEUM Documents through decades of unpaid work—eight issues over ten years. MARATHONEUM Document No. 8 is available in print as a 12-page issue. “AIMS is celebrating two important anniversaries this year: the 130th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Athens and the 90th anniversary of the Olympic Torch Relay from Olympia, Greece, to Berlin in 1936. In 2026, World Athletics awarded the Forum for Sports History the ‘World Athletics Heritage Plaque’ in recognition of its contributions to researching the history of running and track and field. Our mission is to remember and thank the pioneers who came before us and developed this movement—the organizers, race directors, volunteers, and runners—who have already been forgotten; that is our job.

Horst Milde

“Starting in the summer of 2027, the Forum for Sports History will have a new digital home, which will then be ‘the place to go’ for anyone interested in running and track and field.” The assembly gave Horst Milde a standing ovation as he stepped down from the podium.

Standard Chartered Taipei Charity Marathon CHINESE TAIPEI LOOKING AHEAD | 10 JANUARY 2027

This year’s edition introduces a 12 km race category, replacing the previous 11 km distance and expanding the race programme alongside the 3 km, half marathon and marathon events. As the opening race in Standard Chartered’s global series of running events across ten cities worldwide, the Taipei marathon continues to connect local and international runners while promoting inclusion, wellbeing and participation. The event’s international profile continues to grow following its designation as an Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) Age Group World Rankings qualifying race, strengthening its appeal among competitive runners seeking international recognition and qualification opportunities.

Participants can join the marathon’s popular Shakeout Run, a relaxed pre-race run organised on the day before the event for overseas and local runners. The activity offers runners an opportunity to adapt to local weather conditions, explore Taipei’s iconic streets and landmarks and connect with fellow participants from around the world. More than a warm-up session, the Shakeout Run has become an integral part of the race experience, showcasing the city’s hospitality and vibrant running culture. The marathon’s charitable mission remains at the heart of the event. Since 2013 funds raised more than TWD 140 million (3.8 million EUR) through race entries, public donations and fundraising initiatives have supported programmes focused on youth employability, women’s entrepreneurship and opportunities for people with visual impairments. Through these efforts, the marathon demonstrates how running can create meaningful impact far beyond the finish line. With its expanded race programme, global credentials, community-focused initiatives and long-standing commitment to social impact, the 2027 Standard Chartered Taipei Charity Marathon is set to welcome runners from around the world in a celebration of endurance, inclusion and purpose. Registration is open until 30 October 2026. Buriram Marathon is organised in accordance with the World Athletics Label Road Race standards and features a 100% closed-road course, allowing runners to enjoy a safe, professionally managed race from start to finish. Every aspect of the event—from race operations and medical support to hydration stations and course management—is carefully planned to deliver an exceptional experience for both elite athletes and recreational runners. As Thailand’s largest night marathon, Buriram Marathon transforms the city into a

spectacular festival of lights, music, and celebration. Along the 42.195-kilometre course, runners are surrounded by dazzling lighting displays, live entertainment, energetic music, local music, and vibrant cheering zones. The atmosphere is so unique that many runners affectionately describe it as “a music festival stretching 42.195 kilometres.” The celebration continues long after crossing the finish line. More than 100 local food vendors serve Buriram’s famous dishes and regional specialties with complimentary food available for every finisher. It is the perfect way to recover, celebrate, and experience the authentic flavours and warm hospitality of Buriram. Whether you are chasing a personal best, running your first marathon or searching for your next unforgettable race destination, Buriram Marathon offers world-class racing and extraordinary local spirit. Bank of Cyprus Nicosia Marathon CYPRUS LOOKING AHEAD | 24 JANUARY 2027

As the miles pass and the challenge becomes greater, the character of the city takes on a different significance. Nicosia is a city that has endured, evolved and continued to move forward. It is fitting backdrop for a marathon – a distance that asks every runner to keep going even when the road becomes difficult. The Bank of Cyprus Nicosia Marathon offers a Half Marathon, a 10km race, a 5km Road Race, a 5km Corporate Race and a 1km Kids’ Race. Whether you are chasing a personal best, taking on your first race, or looking for a shared experience with family and friends, there is a distance for everyone. The route takes runners through some of Nicosia’s most recognisable landmarks including the Liberty Monument, Famagusta Gate and the narrow, charming streets of the Old Town. Along the way ancient walls and historic buildings sit alongside the everyday life of a modern capital. It is this contrast that makes running here so distinctive. For a runner the experience changes as the kilometres pass. The excitement of the start gradually gives way to the familiar rhythm of finding your pace, settling into your breathing and focusing on the road ahead. There are moments when the surroundings catch your attention and remind you to look beyond the time.

That is what gives the Bank of Cyprus Nicosia Marathon its character. Thousands of runners arrive with different goals, but for a few hours, they share the same streets and become part of the capital’s living story. For every runner it is a chance to experience Nicosia in a way that stays with you long after you cross the finish line. ■ www.nicosiamarathon.com https://www.facebook.com/ NicosiaMarathonCy

Countryside running on the border of Austria and Germany

Where the finish line meets the spa

T

here are marathons where the reward for reaching the finish line is a medal, a warm drink and the satisfaction of having survived 42.195 kilometres. At the Johannesbad Thermen-Marathon in Bad Füssing, the reward can be rather more restorative: the finish is at a thermal spa.

DISTANCE RUNNING | 2026 EDITION 4

That distinctive setting gives this winter race an identity of its own. For the runner, however, the experience begins long before the possibility of post-race relaxation. On race morning, Bad Füssing has the familiar atmosphere of marathon day: runners arriving with their race plans, checking watches, warming up and exchanging the quiet observations that belong to the hours before a long run.

Johannesbad Thermen-Marathon GERMANY LOOKING AHEAD | 31 JANUARY 2027

Yet there is a relaxed quality to the occasion, without the sense of overwhelming scale found at the world’s biggest city marathons. The start is at Johannesbad Thermen, with the marathon and half marathon beginning at 10:00. The race programme also includes a 10-kilometre event and races for younger participants, creating a broad running community around the main event. Once the field gets moving the character of the race becomes clear. The course leads away from the spa and into the countryside surrounding Bad Füssing, following predominantly asphalt roads through villages and open rural landscapes. Fields, meadows and wooded stretches provide a changing backdrop, while the relatively quiet roads allow runners to concentrate on the rhythm of their own running.

That is what makes the Thermen-Marathon particularly memorable. It combines the essential qualities of a road marathon – a measured course, the discipline of pacing and the shared experience of running – with the distinctive character of a spa town in winter. For runners travelling to Germany in search of a different marathon experience, Bad Füssing offers a simple proposition. Start among fellow runners, run through the Bavarian countryside, finish where you began – and let the thermal waters take care of what comes next. ■ www.thermen-marathon.de

For marathoners, the two-lap format adds another dimension. The opening circuit is an opportunity to find a sustainable pace and absorb the surroundings. On the second lap, familiar landmarks become markers of progress, and the psychological challenge of maintaining concentration begins to match the physical one. Then comes the return to Johannesbad. The finish is not merely a geographical endpoint but a return to where the day began. After the final kilometres, crossing the line brings the familiar mixture of relief, pride and fatigue – followed, unusually, by the prospect of thermal recovery.

KD Amdavad Marathon INDIA LOOKING AHEAD | 21 FEBRUARY 2027

T

he KD Amdavad Marathon is an experience where every kilometre connects fitness with the spirit, heritage and humanity of Ahmedabad. The forthcoming edition will be held on 21 February 2027. Over the last four editions the event has established itself as one of India’s leading cause-driven marathons, bringing together runners, families and communities on a route that showcases the city’s iconic landmarks and rich cultural heritage. The defining message of the marathon is “Donate Organs, Save Lives.” As runners make their way through Ahmedabad, every step becomes a reminder that running can create an impact far beyond the finish line. The event harnesses the collective energy of the running community to raise awareness of organ donation and encourage people to consider the extraordinary gift of giving someone another chance at life. Dr Adit Desai, Managing Director, KD Hospital, emphasises the purpose behind the event: “KD Amdavad Marathon was created to use the power of running to raise awareness for organ donation and inspire people to make a life-saving difference. Every runner who participates becomes an ambassador for this cause. When we see the data 1,235 families have agreed to organ donation, while 89,839 people are still waiting for an organ transplant. Behind these numbers are individuals and families waiting with hope for a transplant that could change their lives. At KD Hospitals we have performed 271 transplants, and our journey towards saving more lives continues. Through the KD Amdavad Marathon, we

hope to amplify this message and inspire more people to come forward and give the gift of life.” For a participant the experience is equally about discovering Ahmedabad while running through its heritage. The course offers runners a unique opportunity to experience the city’s character as they move through historic neighbourhoods and landmarks, cheered on by an enthusiastic community. It transforms a conventional road race into a celebration of the city itself. Dr Rahul Sharma, Race Director, says, “We endeavour to create an experience where runners feel the heritage, energy and soul of Ahmedabad with every kilometre.” Inclusivity is another defining feature of the event, with more than 30% women’s participation. The strong presence of women runners reflects the marathon’s commitment to creating an environment where everyone

feels encouraged to participate, compete and celebrate their own journey. Dr Erika Patel, Race Ambassador & She Races India Head, highlights this focus: “When women run, they inspire families and communities to embrace fitness. KD Amdavad Marathon provides a platform where women can run with confidence, purpose and pride.” From the excitement at the start line to the final surge towards the finish, the KD Amdavad Marathon brings together fitness, heritage and humanity. For runners it is a chance to challenge themselves, experience Ahmedabad differently and to run for a cause that can save lives. Every kilometre becomes more meaningful when the finish line represents not just personal achievement, but the possibility of giving someone else a new beginning. ■ kdamdavadmarathon.com DISTANCE RUNNING | 2026 EDITION 4

A distinctly Delhi experience

Community meets the Capital

T

he Cognizant New Delhi Marathon 2027, the 12th edition of the event, is scheduled for 28 February 2027.

This iconic event brings together more than 30,000 runners, transforming the capital into a celebration of endurance, ambition, inclusion and community. With participants representing all 32 States and Union Territories, and over 31 countries, the event lives up to its positioning as The National Marathon. Recognition by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) as the National Marathon places the race firmly within India’s elite competitive athletics calendar.

outcomes, alongside significant media and brand value. It shows how a marathon can create value far beyond the finish line. The race is recognised by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and by World Athletics, reinforcing its standing within the international running community. This convergence of elite athletes and recreational runners is one of the event’s defining strengths. The same start line brought together athletes chasing national qualification and first-time runners and families participating in the shorter distances. The Cognizant New Delhi Marathon takes runners through the heart of India’s capital, creating a unique intersection between sport, history and civic identity. The race environment connects the modern culture of running with the city’s monumental landmarks and broad avenues. For runners travelling from across India and overseas, the experience is about running through the capital of the country surrounded by the architecture and history that define New Delhi. The route has historically taken in iconic locations including Lodhi Garden, Khan Market, Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate and Kartavya Path, giving participants a distinctly Delhi experience. But the scale of the event was only one part of its story. An assessment of the recent edition points to a substantial 360° impact, spanning health, social and economic 30

DISTANCE RUNNING | 2026 EDITION 4

The participation numbers are significant, but the real impact lies in what they represent: running clubs travelling together, corporate teams embracing fitness, young runners discovering endurance sport, experienced athletes pursuing new goals and communities using running as a platform for connection. The participant findings bring this to life. Most participants reported real improvements across the board: better overall health, greater stamina and energy throughout the day, and a noticeable drop in stress levels. The social dimension was just as compelling. The event created considerable social impact, with participants reporting a stronger sense of community belonging and greater civic pride in Delhi. Many said they formed new connections through the event, and inclusivity for women and people with diverse abilities came through strongly in the findings. The Cognizant New Delhi Marathon is a statement about where Indian distance running is headed — more competitive, more inclusive, more national in reach and increasingly connected to the global running community. It’s a race that brings the nation together, one stride at a time. ■ www.newdelhimarathon.com www.facebook.com/newdelhimarathon/

Guided by its central theme, “The Day We Unite.” the event has brought together runners, volunteers, and spectators for 19 editions. In 2011 the foundation launched its official charity program, “Run with Heart,” enabling participants and donors to contribute meaningfully to diverse charitable causes.

Marking its 10th anniversary in 2016, the official race logo was renewed to portray the shared energy of runners, volunteers and cheering crowds along the course—symbolizing the unifying spirit of the marathon. The following year, in 2017, the event introduced a new course finishing directly in front of Tokyo Station. Since this course change the Tokyo Marathon has produced numerous record-breaking times in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Even visitors who happen to be passing by stop to clap and cheer runners they have never met. Lumbini Peace Marathon Running Around Buddha’s Home NEPAL LOOKING AHEAD | 22 MARCH 2027

For runners constantly searching for new destinations and meaningful experiences, the Lumbini Peace Marathon offers something truly distinctive. It combines the excitement and endurance of long-distance running with the opportunity to discover Nepal’s rich Buddhist heritage. The route transforms the marathon into a pilgrimage on foot, allowing participants to experience the landscape, culture, history, and spirituality of one of the world’s most revered destinations. For hundreds of millions of Buddhists around the world, Lumbini is the holiest pilgrimage destination associated with the Buddha. Its importance to Buddhism can be compared with the significance of the Vatican and Jerusalem for Christianity, Mecca and Medina for Islam, and other sacred pilgrimage destinations for major faith traditions. Lumbini therefore holds a special place in the spiritual heritage of humanity. The Lumbini Peace Marathon seeks to bring people together through running while promoting the universal values taught by Buddha – peace, compassion, harmony, mindfulness and non-violence. It is an invitation to runners, pilgrims, and peace seekers from every corner of the world to come to Lumbini, discover its sacred heritage, and share a common message of peace. Participants are invited to run for Lumbini, run for the Buddhist Pancha Sheel and Run for World Peace. With every step, the marathon demonstrates how sport can transcend competition to unite people, cultures, and communities in the pursuit of peace. The Lumbini Peace Marathon is a journey of the body, mind, and spirit through the birthplace of Buddha towards a world of greater harmony. ■ www.lumbinipeacemarathon.com www.facebook.com/lumbinimarathon 38

OPINION

N

o one is born a long-distance runner. It almost always starts without a plan – for fun, on a whim – and then, gradually, becomes something closer to devotion. Behind every finisher’s triumphant smile is an ordinary person who once struggled to complete a single mile and slowly, stubbornly, became the kind of person who finishes countless more. Those finish-line moments are paid for in advance: with breathlessness, aching joints, self-doubt, missed alarms and a hundred quiet temptations to quit. Most people start for reasons that have little to do with running itself – to reclaim their health, to manage stress, to lose weight, to recover from illness or simply to find out what they’re capable of. The early runs are always uncomfortable; every step seems to question the decision. But the body adapts faster than we expect. New capillaries thread through muscle. The heart strengthens. Bones and tendons thicken to meet the load. Resting heart rate drops, sleep deepens, blood pressure and blood sugar begin to settle. None of it is visible at first. Then, one day, it is undeniable. Running teaches that this is a mind game. Progress is rarely dramatic; it is slow, cumulative, and mostly invisible while it’s happening. At some point on every runner’s journey, motivation runs out before the body does. What takes its place – some call it discipline, I call it stubbornness – is the moment the mind finally catches up to the body and rewrites what a person believes they’re capable of. That shift doesn’t stay on the track. It shows up everywhere else in a runner’s life. There’s a familiar milestone in every distance runner’s story: a distance that once felt impossible suddenly becomes ordinary. Not because the course got easier, but because the runner did – a runner’s soul has been built, quietly, out of repetition.

The first step BY DR JOSEPH A ELIZ A BE T H

The health case for running is well established: improved cardiovascular fitness, lower blood pressure, better insulin sensitivity, stronger bones and muscles, better sleep, and – critically, as we age – preserved independence and functional capacity. But the psychological rewards may matter more. Running is often described as moving meditation: worries fade, problems shrink to manageable size, and clarity arrives uninvited. The rhythmic repetition of footfall stimulates serotonin, the brain chemical that regulates mood and sleep, alongside dopamine and endorphins that produce motivation and relief from pain. Over time, this rewires the brain toward better emotional regulation – not metaphorically, but structurally.

40

DISTANCE RUNNING | 2026 EDITION 4

OPINION

Running also creates rare space to disconnect – from screens, from noise – and reconnect with one’s own thoughts, or with the people running beside you. It is never entirely solitary. Around the world, running communities keep expanding, pulling together people who would otherwise never share a room: doctors beside teachers, students beside CEOs, first-timers beside veterans. Age, profession, nationality, and language all become secondary to the single shared purpose of putting one foot in front of the other. Perhaps that’s why a finish line carries such outsized emotion – every runner there understands instinctively what it cost every other runner to arrive. Running remains one of the most democratic sports in the world. It asks for little: a safe route, a decent pair of shoes, and a personal decision to start. Coaching and gear can refine a runner’s technique, but nothing substitutes for showing up. And despite a persistent myth that endurance running belongs to elite athletes, most distance runners come to the sport for the opposite reason – to manage obesity, hypertension, diabetes, or depression, or simply to find something on the other side of a hard year. People discover running in their forties, fifties, seventies. With sensible medical guidance and gradual progression, most people carrying a chronic condition can safely take it up. The goal was never to win; it was to be a little better than yesterday.

Distance running proves that success isn’t found beyond the finish line – it’s built behind it, in the unseen mornings, the lonely sessions, the aching muscles and the stubborn belief that progress is still possible. Every finish line marks the start of another race: the race toward a stronger body, a steadier mind, and proof of what an ordinary person can do with extraordinary persistence. The next great distance runner may be training somewhere right now. More importantly, so is the next ordinary person who has simply decided to take the first step.

The global running movement reflects that same openness – from neighborhood park runs to the Abbott World Marathon Majors, from beach and mountain ultras to the One Global Mile organized under the AIMS umbrella. Runners today belong to an international community divided by event but united by experience, one that often introduces them to new geography, cultures and friendships that outlast the race itself. There is no secret formula to any of it. Walk before you run. Jog before you sprint. Run short before you run far. Respect recovery, fuel properly and listen to your body. Celebrate every milestone, however small – the first 5K deserves as much satisfaction as the marathon, because both represent the same victory over the same doubts.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Strength training for runners L

ong-distance running is often associated with hundreds of miles and spending hours on the road.

While running volume is certainly an important part of preparing for a marathon, there is another form of training that should not be overlooked: strength training. It is not about becoming a bodybuilder or adding unnecessary muscle mass. Instead, it is about developing a stronger, more resilient body that can handle the repetitive demands of running efficiently. When incorporated correctly, strength training can improve running performance, reduce the risk of injury, and help runners maintain good form when fatigue sets in. Strength training can help to improve the way the muscles and nervous system produce and control force. Stronger muscles Regular strength training contributes to a more efficient running style. Picture: SCC EVENTS/Petko Beier

For elite runners, such as those competing at the BMW Berlin Marathon 2025, regular strength training is an integral part of their training routine. Picture: SCC EVENTS/Sebastian Wells

can contribute to a more efficient stride, allowing runners to maintain their pace without wasting as much energy. If certain muscles are weak or if the body struggles to control movement under load, repeated stress can contribute to overuse problems. The more a runner trains, the more important it becomes to ensure that the body can tolerate the workload. The cardiovascular system may be capable of handling the training, while individual muscles, tendons, or joints may struggle to keep up. Exercises such as squats, split squats, deadlifts, calf raises, and hip-strengthening movements can protect areas that are important for running. A well-designed strength program can therefore complement running by helping the body become more capable of handling training loads. The lower leg plays an important role in running. The calves and Achilles tendon are involved in absorbing and returning energy with every stride. Because these structures experience substantial repetitive loading, developing their strength and capacity is important for runners. Calf raises, including both straight-knee and bent-knee variations, can be useful additions to a runner’s strength routine. Exercises that challenge the feet and lower legs can also help runners develop greater control and resilience. Two strength-training sessions per week can be an effective starting point. They might include: squat or split-squat movement, hip-hinge movement such as a deadlift, calfstrengthening exercise, single-leg exercise, core exercise, optional upper-body exercise

BY DR . MED MARG R IT LOCK

Dr. med. Margrit Lock is Executive Board Member Medical of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON and SCC EVENTS. As a board member, she is responsible for the orthopaedic and trauma surgery leadership in the care of international elite athletes at SCC EVENTS competitions as well as for the Marathon Team Berlin. The exact exercises, sets, repetitions, and loads should depend on the runner’s experience, goals, training phase, and overall workload. Long-distance running is an endurance sport, but endurance alone is not enough. A runner needs a body capable of repeatedly absorbing and producing force over thousands of strides. Strength training can help improve running economy, support running form, increase muscular capacity, improve performance on hills, and make the body more resilient to the demands of high-volume training. ONE GLOBAL MILE

One mile, one day, one world How the 2nd Annual AIMS One Global MileTM circled the earth on July 11, 2026

A

s the sun rose over the horizon of the first One Global MileTM city on July 11, 2026, something quietly remarkable was already in motion — a single mile, about to be run across continents, climates, and time zones, by runners who would never meet but would share the same finish line feeling before the day was done. Eleven cities across ten countries had registered for the 2nd Annual AIMS One Global Mile — from the foothills of the Himalayas to the edges of the Sahara, from the islands of the Indian Ocean to the river towns of the American Northeast. Each of them had made a commitment: same distance, same day, same spirit. When July 11th arrived, that commitment came to life on start lines across the globe. It began in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where the morning heat was already rising as runners gathered on the start line. From there, the sun continued its journey westward — to the streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh, where RunBangla International, the organization that created the One Global Mile series, has spent seven years building an international running movement; to the Himalayan foothills of Kohalpur and the high-altitude avenues of Kathmandu, where Nepal

sent not one but two cities to the start — a testament to how the model can scale within a country as naturally as it does across borders. From Nepal the sun moved on to the turquoiseedged island of Hulhulamé in the Maldives, where runners raced at just two meters above sea level, and then across the Indian Ocean and the breadth of a continent to Ifrane, Morocco, perched at 1,665 meters in the Atlas Mountains, where the air is thin, the mornings are cool, and the scenery is unlike anything else on the global race calendar. Then came the Americas — San José, Costa Rica, and finally Warren Street in Hudson, New York, where the whole idea was born, and where the day’s last miles were run as the sun completed its arc. That origin story is worth a moment. In 2025, Jon Boka — founder of RunBangla International and co-director to Jorge Pardo, creator of the Hudson Mile — had an idea as straightforward as the distance itself. On the day of the Hudson Mile, he asked his RBI partner Rajib Hossain and team in Dhaka to run a synchronized sister event. Two cities. Two countries. One mile. One day. The template was set. One Global Mile was born from that moment, and in 2026 it grew to span the earth. Perhaps the most unexpected story of July 11th came from

beyond the official event cities entirely. Runners who had no local One Global Mile event — in Edinburgh, Scotland; in El Jadida, Morocco; and in cities across South America, Africa, and Asia — chose to run anyway. Alone, on their own streets, they submitted their times as virtual participants. Over a dozen solo runs arrived from around the world, unsolicited and deeply felt. One Global Mile had not yet reached those cities. But those cities had already reached One Global Mile. This is what a movement looks like in its early years — it outgrows its own infrastructure before the infrastructure is ready. One month before July 11th, One Global Mile was presented to nearly 200 race directors gathered at the AIMS Congress in Tromsø, Norway — one of the most concentrated gatherings of international race leadership in the world. The concept resonated. It is simple enough to grasp immediately and ambitious enough to matter: an annual one-mile community race, held simultaneously in cities around the world, open exclusively to AIMS member organizations. Any member can bring One Global Mile to their city. You own your event completely — your course, your entry fees, your race day. What you share is the date, the

distance, and the knowledge that on that same morning, runners on multiple continents are lining up to do exactly what you are doing. AIMS President Paco Borao captured it well in his congratulatory message after the event: “What began as the vision of one of our member organizations in Bangladesh has grown into a genuinely global movement.” AIMS serves as Honorary Series Title Sponsor of One Global Mile — a partnership that speaks to the organization’s core mission of fostering and promoting distance running throughout the world. The virtual runners from Edinburgh and El Jadida will not have to wait much longer. One Global Mile will be coming for those cities in 2027 — and for dozens more. The 3rd Annual AIMS One Global Mile — July 17, 2027 The date has been set. The goal is 30+ cities. If you are an AIMS member organization and you want your city on that map — your runners, your community, your race — the door is open. The sun will move west again on July 17th. The only question is whether your city will be one of the places it finds a start line. One Mile | One Day | One World

Keeping the momentum going

part from those rare days when it’s simply too hot to venture out, summer training feels easy. Days are long, mornings (and evenings) are light. You may need to manage a group of excited 8-year-olds from time to time but there’s still a sense of having more time in your day. Slotting training time into your schedule can be challenging but ultimately it feels doable. It could be that you chose summer as the perfect time to begin your training in earnest. If so, well done you! Forming good habits when barriers are minimal is a great idea. That said, how do you avoid falling off the training treadmill now that daylight hours are slowly slipping away? As winter approaches getting outdoors for your regular dose of Vitamin D takes more effort – so let’s get strategic. Start by identifying your major challenges. Perhaps the cold keeps you from pulling

on your trainers. Or maybe the thought of running in the wet is a real turn-off. It could be that your schedule is impractical. If you’ve been running off-road at 6 am (or 7 pm), you likely won’t want to risk the same routes in the dark. There’s also the chance that the pull of a great box set or a hot chocolate and a comfy blanket is just too strong on a winter’s night. You know yourself better than anyone. So once you’ve identified the main risks to maintaining your running schedule, address them head-on – before they become a problem. Is your running gear up to the challenge this winter? Let’s face it, no one wants to feel cold, wet and uncomfortable, and even the thought of being freezing or soggy can disrupt your training schedule. If not,

“

Maybe the thought of running in the wet is a real turn-off

consider investing in a snug, lightweight running jacket or some waterproof gear. Just knowing you’re ready for what the weather can throw at you stacks the odds in your favour. When the forest paths and countryside routes you prefer are off-limits, you may need to switch up your routine to stay on track. Consider heading for the streets instead. There’s something undeniably magical about running by lamplight with the scent of winter in the air. But if heading out alone in the dark makes you want to hide under the duvet, find some company. Joining your local running club is a fun way to stay motivated, not to mention an opportunity to connect with those who share your passion. Setting up a buddy system with a friend or colleague works well too. When one of you is reluctant, the other will likely be able to encourage them to get out of the door. If evenings or mornings are just not practical at all in the winter, how about a lunchtime run to break up your day? And if nothing else works, there’s always the treadmill at your local gym. More time spent indoors often means we’re more susceptible to coughs and colds in the winter. Ensuring we eat enough fruit and vegetables, staying hydrated (even when we may not feel thirsty), and getting some daylight exposure every day can go a long way towards keeping us healthy. If you’re going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark, try asking your health professional about supplement options. In the colder months, your ability to make up excuses may grow wings. Understandably, some days you really won’t feel like running. That’s fine, as long as you put a strategy in place… and keep on running!
