Ahmed Sharif
Passionate advocate for running and frst African on AIMS board
Ahmed Sharif sadly passed away on 12 April 2026.
Ahmed established the Mount Meru Marathon in Arusha, Tanzania, in October 1980 as part of a broader vision to promote distance running in Tanzania. Through his dedication and leadership, Ahmed helped to put both the Mount Meru Marathon on the international running map.
Ahmed was elected to the Board of Directors of AIMS in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1994. He served as a Director from 1994 to 2005 and was the frst African and the frst Muslim to serve on the AIMS Board. He hosted AIMS’ frst-ever Board Meeting in Africa in Arusha, Tanzania, in October 2000. Throughout his life, he was a passionate advocate for running, health, recreation, and opportunities for young people across Africa.
Ahmed enjoyed a distinguished career in the banking industry, including serving as Director of Finance and Administration at the Central Bank of Tanzania.
Ahmed was highly respected within his community, where he devoted his time and energy to helping others. He played a signifcant role in helping to build a mosque for the local community near his home in Dar es Salaam. He is also dearly remembered for his support in providing employment opportunities to community members wherever possible.
His family was his greatest treasure, and he devoted himself to their wellbeing, guidance and happiness. Ahmed is survived by his wife, Fatma, and his six children
Ahmed was a greatly loved member of the running community and the wider sporting family. His legacy lives on through the Mount Meru Marathon, the countless lives he touched through sport and community service, and the family and friends who were blessed to share in his journey.
Sustainability in Marathon I nsights from AIMS RunVibes
Sustainability in marathon management is shifting from a niche concern to a core operational pillar.
In the latest AIMS RunVibes webinar global experts explored how races can balance the explosive growth of distance running with environmental responsibility.
Insights for race organizers:
Integrate, Don’t Isolate: Sustainability should not be a standalone department. Success depends on embedding ecofriendly practices—like waste management and low-carbon logistics—into every aspect of event planning.
The Power of ‘Champions’: Designating a ‘sustainability champion’ is essential to keep initiatives on track and overcome bureaucratic hurdles.
Community-led Innovation: Innovative programs like the Tata Mumbai Marathon’s ‘Green Bib’ and the Xiamen Marathon’s ‘Green Run in Action’ show that engaging runners directly in environmental causes fosters both impact and participant loyalty.
Embracing change: Major events like the Paris Marathon are proving that runners are ready to adapt, even to ‘no-cup’ policies, provided the change is communicated clearly and efectively.
The future of sustainable racing is rooted in transparency and data. By tracking key metrics—waste, water, and energy—and working closely with local stakeholders, organizers can create events that protect the cities and communities that host them.

Under Arctic
The 25th World Congress of AIMS took place in Tromsø on 18-20 June 2026. It was the frst time that the Congress was held so far north.
Lying within the Arctic Circle at nearly 70 degrees North, in the summer there is a period of light during which the sun stays above the horizon. This is also the best time for runners to visit as the temperature moderates.
Congress delegates heard from the local organisers how the special features of Tromsø have allowed them to develop the city into a sports tourism destination. This includes a winter season with a reindeer race (for spectators) and better chances of seeing the Northern Lights.
Cultural exchange brought about through distance running has helped with ‘city branding’ in many venues.
Another topic of interest was the signifcance of Artifcial Intelligence when applied to aspects of race organisation no matter what size the race may be. I t was claimed that ‘data-driven tools are already transforming race organisation in practice’.
Before ending the morning session Alessio Punzi, Road Running manager for World
25th AIMS World Congress took place in Norway
Athletics, delivered a short address on global running development and alignment with AIMS.
Mats Hedenström, CEO and managing director of Stockholm Marathon, spoke on individual responsibility to safeguard sustainability practices.
AIMS President Paco Borao reviewed progress since the 24th World Congress of AIMS. He showed that membership was stable but that the distribution of members had tilted signifcantly such that the majority are now races in South and South-East Asia.
At the end of the frst day delegates were
given an Arctic experience with a trip in a cable car to the top of a nearby mountain – at midnight and in brilliant sunshine. The summit was grassy but many of the surrounding peaks were snowbound.
On the second day George Hutchins, Head of Sponsorship of Tata Consultancy Services, showed two promotional clips which evoked emotion through ‘digital storytelling’. By such means marathons can position themselves as a powerful marketing platform for brands.
Marcel Altenburg (of Start Right) was the fnal presenter. He described how crowd fow impacts safety and runner experience

Renna Nelis is new G eneral S ecretary
Renna Nelis has been appointed the new General Secretary of AIMS.
Renna is part of the leadership of the organisation behind the biggest mass sports events in Estonia including the Tallinn Marathon. She has run 22 marathons and represented Estonia as a torchbearer at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Renna with her team organised the 22nd AIMS World Congress held in Tallinn in September 2018.
Renna commented: “In addition to inspiring meetings and discussions, the World Congress of AIMS brought a new challenge for me – an opportunity to contribute to the development of AIMS in my new role. A big thank you to all my colleagues and friends all over the world for your trust!”
and proposed fve ‘golden principles’ which can be applied to races of any size.
On the fnal day members voted on two matters: the hosting member of the 26th World Congress of AIMS; and four out of fve places on the Board of Directors.

Successful course measurement workshop in Bangalore
AIMS, in collaboration with World Athletics, conducted a fve-day Course Measurement Workshop in Bangalore from 20-24 April 2026.
This specialised, invitation-only workshop brought together 14 participants from across the country to undergo intensive training in course measurement standards for road races. Road running is the fastest growing sport in India.
Course measurement is a critical component in distance running, ensuring that race distances are accurate and compliant with international standards. This is essential for the validity of race results, athlete performances, and qualifcation for global competitions
Participants are being trained in accordance with World Athletics protocols. Certifcation is based on attendance, performance in assessments, and submission of valid measurement reports. The initiative is expected to develop a new group of trained and accredited course measurers in India, enhancing the quality and credibility of road races nationwide.
The workshop is being conducted by Hugh Jones, winner of 1982 London Marathon, Secretary of AIMS and course measurer for London Olympics. “As road running continues to expand globally, it is essential that races in India adhere to consistent international standards and make it a destination for road races for international participants,” he says.

“With just three certifed course measurers currently in India, this workshop is a signifcant step towards developing a pool of certifed measurers who will strengthen the integrity and global recognition of races across the country.
With the rapid growth of distance running and marathon culture in India, such capacity-building initiatives are crucial to aligning Indian races with global best practices.
This initiative reinforces AIMS and World Athletics commitment to share technical expertise, information, knowledge and supporting the continued growth of distance running in India.

Crisp air and clear skies enhance every kilometre
The Kathmandu Marathon ofers an unforgettable journey through history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes.
Set in the heart of Kathmandu Valley this unique marathon challenges runners at an elevation that tests endurance while rewarding them with some of the most spectacular views in the world. Unlike conventional city races designed for speed, this marathon invites participants to slow down to experience and absorb the essence of Nepal.
What makes this marathon extraordinary is its route across three historic cities: Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. Each stride takes runners past timeless landmarks – ancient temples, intricately carved courtyards, majestic Durbar Squares and iconic structures like Dharahara. These monuments carry the living history and spiritual heartbeat of Nepal, ofering a rare opportunity to run through centuries of heritage.
If your goal is a personal best time the Kathmandu Marathon will not be your ideal race. The semi-closed roads, elevation shifts and vibrant city life create a course that prioritizes experience over speed. Yet what it lacks in pace it more than compensates with atmosphere. Runners are embraced by one of the world’s most pleasant climates, with crisp air and clear skies enhancing every kilometre. On especially clear days participants might even catch glimpses of the distant Himalayan range, a humbling reminder of nature’s grandeur.
The Kathmandu Marathon is also a celebration for the people. The 10k International de Marrakech is your next destination race
Imagine crossing the fnish line of a world-class race to the sight of centuries-old pink clay ramparts, towering palm trees and the distant snow-capped Atlas Mountains.
For runners who want something more than a medal the 10k International de Marrakech delivers the ultimate fusion of athletic ambition and cultural immersion.
Now in its 12th edition this race has established itself as one of North Africa’s premier road running events. The course is exceptionally fat, threading through the city’s wide avenues and alongside ancient fortifcations that have stood for nearly a thousand years. The race date – this year on 18 October - brings crisp, clear morning air and ideal conditions to chase a personal best. Runners looking for a longer challenge can opt for the 20km distance held on the same day. Few races in the world ofer a backdrop this dramatic, or a fnish line this cinematic.
The reward of a destination race is what unfolds once the timing mat is behind you. Marrakech is a city that commands full attention. Step into the UNESCO-listed medina, a labyrinthine world of souks, spice markets, and ornate palaces where centuries of Moroccan history press close on every side. Recover in a traditional riad — those serene, courtyard-centered guesthouses that feel a world removed from the bustle just outside their carved wooden doors. Surrender to a post-race hammam, the quintessential Moroccan bath ritual, and emerge restored. Then make your way to Jemaa el-Fnaa, the city’s legendary central
square, for slow-poured mint tea and slowcooked tagine.
Reaching Marrakech is straightforward. The award-winning Marrakech Menara Airport sits just minutes from the city centre with direct connections from major European and North American hubs. Accommodation ranges from ultra-luxury desert resorts to intimate boutique riads at every price point — making it easy to build a trip that suits your style and budget.
Run a race this autumn that stays in your memory forever.
Running the Brasília Monumental Marathon is a journey through Brasília’s history.
The city is an open-air museum, and running past its modern architecture, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, is an experience of a lifetime. The start and fnish of the race are at the Esplanade of Ministries, where we fnd Brasília’s main monuments such as the National Congress, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Museum.
The highlight of the course is between 7–11 km, when runners cross the JK Bridge and enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Paranoá at sunrise. From kilometres 14 to 35, we run along Avenida das Nações, where most of the 130 embassies in Brazil’s capital are located. The Monumental Marathon also features three other distances that take place on the same weekend: on Saturday there are 5km and 10km races in the late afternoon, and on Sunday the main distances (marathon and half marathon) start at sunrise!
I nspiring run across iconic JK Bridge

The best-prepared athletes have the option of running both days, completing the Monumental Challenge and receiving a special third medal upon fnishing. There are also trophies for age groups and TOP 42 and TOP 21 medals for the fastest runners in their respective distances. In its 7th edition, with the expectation of having more than 15,000 athletes participating, the MMB seeks to consolidate itself as one of the main races in South America. I t already attracts many participants by being part of the prestigious Mega Finisher circuit (www. megafnisher.com), which brings together 5 marathons in 5 South American capitals
and ofers a special medal to those who complete 5 marathons or 5 half-marathons in 60 months. So, for anyone wanting to get to know Brazil’s capital, the Monumental Marathon is an inspiring event that, over its two days, ofers participants diferent experiences, as well as the chance to explore a safe and modern city.
Brasília is a city with great potential to receive visitors from all over the world, and running along its wide avenues is something rarely seen in other major races globally. The mild, rainy climate of November makes participating in Brazil’s most monumental marathon very inviting.
Challenge has always been RunBangla’s natural terrain.
Founded in 2019 by American and Bangladeshi co-founders, RBI set out to transform the running culture of a nation of 170 million people – introducing internationally certifed courses, professional chip timing, and world-class event management to a country with a vibrant and passionate
running community that had simply never had the opportunity to compete on the international stage.
Seven years on, the organisation is widely recognised as Bangladesh’s foremost race organiser, staging multiple events each year for thousands of runners across the country.
Now RunBangla is taking its most ambitious step yet: this November RBI will stage its frst-ever full marathon.
Jolshiri RunBangla
The race takes place in the eastern outskirts of Dhaka. In late November the capital’s outer edges transform. Cool winter air settles over the landscape and morning mist lingers over open ground. The course itself follows newly constructed roads, punctuated by elevated bridges and short stretches of herringbone paving – a route that is fast, scenic and interesting to run.
Four distances will be on ofer: the full marathon, half marathon, 10K, and a 5K fun run – making this one of the most inclusive race weekends Bangladesh has hosted. RBI’s long-term vision is to grow this event into one of Asia’s largest marathons. But for now, the focus is on getting it right – quality frst, size to follow.
Each year the organisation runs one open community race, one dedicated children’s event, and one women’s-centered race – a deliberate efort to build a running movement that refects all of Bangladesh. Female participation has been a particular priority. RBI has long ofered equal prize money across gender categories and this marathon will introduce additional provisions to encourage more women onto the start line.
The marathon also arrives at a milestone moment for the organisation internationally. In 2025 RBI and partner ANIMO Racing Club registered their Hudson Mile event – staged
in Hudson, New York – as a member of AIMS, making it the frst ever one-mile event in AIMS’s 40-year history. Building on that achievement, RBI will launch the new international race series One Global Mile on 11 July 2026: a simultaneous one-mile race staged across multiple countries on the same day, uniting runners in the United States, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Morocco, India, Cambodia, Costa Rica, and the Maldives in a single shared moment. It is the frst internationally coordinated running event ever created from Bangladesh and a powerful sign of where this organisation is headed.
For adventurous runners looking beyond
the usual race calendar, Bangladesh in November is worth serious consideration. The weather is ideal, the hospitality is extraordinary, and the country’s running community – growing fast on the back of an economic boom – will make you feel the warmth of a movement still writing its history.
RunBangla International has spent seven years building the foundation. This November it’s time to run the full distance.

Journey through the cradle of the Renaissance in I taly Estra Firenze Marathon I TA
Running the Firenze Marathon means experiencing something beyond a sporting event.
The 42nd edition, scheduled for Sunday, 29 November, confrms itself as an unmissable event for every runner. Late November ofers ideal conditions: the weather is perfect for running and the timing allows for optimal preparation after the summer break. The event boasts an extraordinary completion rate, a sign that nearly all participants successfully cross the fnish line.
Estra Firenze Marathon
The true masterpiece of the Firenze Marathon is its course – an enchanting journey through the historic centre and the iconic landmarks of the cradle of the Renaissance. The spectacular start and monumental fnish take place in the breathtaking setting of Piazza Duomo. Along the 42.195 kilometres runners pass through the Cascine Park, the city’s green heart, before immersing themselves in the authentic atmosphere of the Oltrarno district.
Participants are captivated by the unique views along the Arno riverbanks, the crossing of the world-famous Ponte Vecchio, and the route passing by the Basilica of Santa Croce, all supported by the warmth of countless spectators and the energy of 2500 tireless volunteers.
The event is experiencing remarkable international growth, becoming one of the world’s most important marathons. In 2025, it achieved a perfect balance between I talian athletes (50%) and international runners (50%). Among the most represented countries are France, followed by the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Germany. After reaching a record 13,200 registrations in 2025, the event is now aiming for the ambitious goal of 15,000 participants in 2026.
The marathon weekend begins during the two preceding days with the Expo Firenze Marathon. This impressive indoor exhibition village, covering approximately 4,500 square
metres, is open to the public from morning until evening. In its latest edition, it hosted 90 exhibitor stands, becoming the perfect place for enthusiasts and industry professionals to discover the latest innovations.
On Sunday morning, the 10K race also takes place – a competitive, FIDAL-certifed event launched in 2024. With around 3,000 participants, it follows the fnal 10 kilometres of the marathon course and also fnishes in Piazza Duomo. I t is the perfect solution for companions or anyone who wants to experience the magical atmosphere of the Florence Marathon without tackling the full distance.
Running in Florence means leaving your footprints where beauty was born, breathing in history with every stride and being carried away by an emotion that takes your breath away long before the fnish line. When your eyes meet centuries of history refected on the facades of ancient buildings, and you hear the roar of the crowd welcoming you into Piazza Duomo, you will understand that you have become part of a moving work of art.
ome races stay with you for the challenge they present, others for the experience beyond the fnish line.
Singapore ofers you both – in one of the world’s unique cities.
I t is a city defned by motion. A fast-moving urban landscape where glass towers, coastal roads, and everyday routines exist side by side. Once a year, that motion shifts onto the streets as the city becomes the stage for one of the region’s most anticipated running weekends.
The ‘BYD Singapore International Marathon presented by adidas’ is Singapore’s only national marathon, featuring Southeast Asia’s only World Athletics Gold Label Road Race in 2026. The race is known for its heat and humidity, making it a natural draw for runners in search of a tropical challenge to tick of their bucket list. Adding to this year’s excitement, a new organiser is taking charge, with plans to elevate it into a standout fxture among Asia’s top races.
BYD Singapore International Marathon
Taking place from 4 to 6 December it begins with the 5km Race, an accessible and high-energy introduction to the event, followed by the Standard Chartered 10km – a thrilling night race for those looking to push the pace. The adidas Half Marathon ofers a longer test of endurance through Singapore’s urban landscape, while the BYD Marathon stands as the fagship distance and ultimate endurance challenge of the weekend.
Alongside these individual races, the EFGH National Championships are also set to take place on 5 and 6 December, uniting Singapore’s fastest athletes to compete for the country’s most prestigious distance titles.
The route is framed by some of Singapore’s most recognisable landmarks, including the bustling Marina Bay, the scenic Singapore River and the world-renowned Gardens by the Bay. Along the way, runners move through a mix of modern cityscapes and heritage pockets that refect Singapore’s layered urban identity.
For those travelling in, the marathon weekend naturally extends into exploration. Beyond the race routes, Singapore ofers cultural enclaves like Chinatown and Kampong Gelam, the retail stretch of Orchard Road, and leisure escapes in Sentosa. The city’s efcient transport network makes it easy to navigate, allowing the weekend to fow seamlessly between running and discovery.

Beachside celebration
Experience the coastline of Thailand
Some races fnish at the fnish line. Bangsaen21 is not one of them. Held each December along the sun-kissed coastline of Bangsaen – just 60 minutes from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport –Bangsaen21 has established itself as one of the most celebrated road races on the global calendar.
Supported by Adidas, and proudly holding the World Athletics Platinum Label continuously since 2023, it holds the distinction of being the world’s frst half marathon to have achieved this honour (Platinum Label) – a pioneer that inspired a new global standard.
The numbers alone tell a compelling story. Over 50,000 runners apply each year for just 13,000 places, making Bangsaen21 the most competitive race entry in Thailand. Selection is by lottery, ensuring fairness. A guaranteed international quota of 1000 places is reserved annually for runners from outside Thailand, welcoming athletes from more than 50 countries to the start line.
The fastest half marathon times ever recorded on ASEAN soil have been set here. That legacy is written by the calibre of those who choose to race. Nine former World Marathon Major champions have competed at Bangsaen21, among them Tigst Assefa, Helen Obiri, Sisay Lemma, and Alexander Mutiso Munyao. Their presence speaks to the quality of a race that the world’s best trust to deliver.
The course is fat and fast, hugging the Gulf of Thailand coastline with a warm sea breeze as a constant companion. More than 2000 local supporters line the route, flling every kilometre with colour, music, and the unmistakable warmth of Thai hospitality. For international runners, it is the kind of crowd that carries you to a personal best you did not know you had in you.
When the last runner crosses the fnish line, Bangsaen does not go quiet. A beachside celebration awaits – food, drinks, music, and the shared joy of thousands of athletes who have just experienced something truly exceptional.
Bangsaen21 is the standard by which half marathons in Asia are measured.

Small steps, big changes
Chase a personal best
Every December the streets of Taipei transform into one giant running festival as tens of thousands of runners gather for one of Asia’s most celebrated city marathons – the Taipei Marathon.
First launched in 1986 the race has grown into Taiwan’s premier road running event and one of the most recognised marathons in Asia. Organized by the Taipei City Government and Chinese Taipei Road Running Association, the Taipei Marathon welcomes elite athletes, passionate amateurs, and international runners from around the world to experience Taiwan’s vibrant capital city on foot. Supported by major sponsors Fubon Financial Holding Co. and adidas, the event continues to strengthen its international presence while promoting running culture throughout Taiwan.
The race is known for combining modern urban scenery, local culture, and enthusiastic crowd support into one unforgettable marathon experience. The course passes some of Taipei’s most iconic landmarks, including Taipei City Hall, the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and the streets surrounding Taipei 101 – one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers. Along the route runners are energised by live performances, cheering spectators and community support that give the race its warm and uniquely Taiwanese atmosphere.
Thanks to cool December weather and a relatively fat course many runners come to chase personal bests. The event currently holds the prestigious World Athletics Gold Label Road Race status, highlighting its world-class organization and growing international reputation.
On the day before the marathon, runners can join the popular Breakfast Run, featuring relaxed 3 km and 9 km events that bring together local runners and overseas visitors in a fun and social atmosphere. I t has become a favorite tradition for participants wanting to experience Taipei in a more casual way before the main event.
The 2026 race theme, “Small Steps, Big Changes,” perfectly captures the spirit of the marathon. Every “small step” represents each stride runners take on the course – and through those steps come meaningful personal changes. Completing a marathon is not only a physical challenge, but also a transformation of determination, confdence and self-belief.
For many international runners, Taipei Marathon is also the perfect gateway to explore Taiwan. Visitors can enjoy famous night markets, mountain landscapes, hot springs, and Taiwan’s renowned hospitality before and after the race. Convenient transportation, a safe city environment, and incredible local food make Taipei an especially welcoming destination for runners and their families.
Taipei Marathon is a celebration of movement, community, and personal growth. Whether you are chasing a new personal best or simply looking for an unforgettable running experience in Asia, every step you take in Taipei can lead to something bigger.

What really matters?
Nutrition and supplements for runners
Running is a sport that demands a lot from our body, depending on its duration and intensity.
In addition to a targeted training structure and an appropriate balance between workload and recovery, nutrition plays an important role.
Protein is essential for muscle maintenance and recovery. The average recommendation for daily protein intake is 0.8 g per kg of body weight. However, if you want to build muscle, or counteract muscle breakdown during intensive training, the amount should increase to 1.2–1.5 g/kg body weight. For strength athletes, recommendations can range up to 2 g/kg body weight.
Carbohydrates are the main fuel for endurance performance and are stored mainly in the muscles and liver. During endurance
exercise lasting more than an hour these stores gradually become depleted so that the body increasingly relies on fats, and in some cases proteins, for energy production. Therefore, replenishing carbohydrate stores before training is essential, apart from occasional targeted fasted training sessions. During intensive endurance exercise an intake of 30–60 g of carbohydrates per hour is recommended.
After training or intense competition proteins and carbohydrates should be replenished promptly to support recovery and counteract the breakdown of the body’s own tissues.
Scientifcally proven: when it comes to supplements, there are valid studies supporting use of creatine and vitamin D. Creatine plays an important role in the body’s energy stores, particularly in muscles, the brain and the nervous system. During physical or mental exertion, creatine stores are consumed. The better these stores are flled, the greater the available performance capacity in muscles and brain function. Creatine naturally occurs mainly in meat. For supplementation, 3–5 g daily is commonly recommended, and sufcient fuid intake is essential.
“Efectiveness of powders and tablets is often insufciently supported by scientifc evidence
Vitamin D is important for bones, muscles and the immune system. I t is required for calcium absorption and therefore plays an important role in bone health, muscle contraction and immune function. Reduced vitamin D levels are often observed in athletes. As vitamin D is fat-soluble, it should be taken together with food. Natural sources include fatty fsh and egg yolk.
Evidence matters more than marketing. There are countless recommendations of powders and tablets on the market but effectiveness is often insufciently supported by scientifc evidence.
For every athlete paying attention to nutrition should be part of the training routine. Before taking supplements a blood test to identify possible defciencies is strongly recommended.

You don’t have to be reckless to seize the day
Live in the moment
BY WENDYJONES
Life’s too short, there’s no time like the present, don’t live to regret inaction.
How many times do we hear these phrases?
They may well be true, but should we really be pushing ourselves forward, living in fear of the consequences of standing still?
Perhaps we’re not meant to treat every moment as if it were our last or feel guilty when we’re not.
The Roman poet Horace frst coined the phrase ‘carpe diem’ in 23 BC as a way of encouraging readers to seize opportunity without hesitation. Amid the noise
of modern society, his words are often misinterpreted.
Think for a second about Black Friday deals and relentless social media advertising, constantly priming us to accept that the time is (always) now. You feverishly try to decide whether FOMO is stronger than your common sense, as the clock on the screen ticks down mercilessly.
We’re often led to believe that being a little reckless ofers the promise of a more exciting life, but the risks often outweigh the benefts. I t’s controlled boldness rather than impulsiveness that leads to greater satisfaction. And knowing you’re ready when opportunity comes knocking - or knowing you’re not.
You wake up at 6 am. You gaze out of the window, and there’s not a cloud in the sky. You quickly put on your training shoes and hit the road.
If you have an event coming up, preparation is going well, and you’ve been waiting for the right conditions to challenge yourself, then it makes sense to seize the moment with both feet.
But if you’re nursing a temperamental Achilles and know you should only be resting or riding your bike, you’ve strayed into reckless territory.
We can’t deny that some risk is necessary to make progress. You and your Achilles will
have to get out on the road at some point but knowing when you’re ready is key.
Ask yourself, what’s most important to you right now? What do you want to achieve? By when? What is most likely to derail your plans?
Being intentionally present in your own life enables you to answer these questions. This in turn helps you plan, carve out opportunities and seize them when they arrive.
Take a couple of minutes to sit quietly today, no agenda, no script, no pressure, and see what comes up for you.

The runner’s quiet superpower: embracing change
Every runner eventually learns that nothing stays the same — not your pace, not your routine, and not even your motivation. And that is precisely the point.
Change arrives uninvited. An injury. A new job. Legs that no longer respond as they once did. Suddenly the simple act of running feels diferent, and so do you. At its heart, running is about learning to live with change.
Look back at your earliest runs compared to your most recent ones. Your body has changed. Your mind has changed. What you want from the sport has changed. You adapted, often without realizing it, and you became a better runner for it. That same ability to adjust is what carries you through the difcult seasons: when times slow down, when life disrupts your training, or when old goals no longer excite you.
What we talk about less is how deeply emotional this process can be. Missing a goal can feel like a quiet failure. An injury steals more than ftness — it can shake your sense of who you are. For many of us running is an anchor in a chaotic world. When that anchor starts to move, it can leave you feeling unsteady. This is where the real work begins.
Adapting is not just about rewriting your training plan. I t is about changing how you think about running itself. I t means separating your worth from your watch or your
placing. I t means accepting that progress is rarely linear and that setbacks are not detours — they belong on the route.
Many runners defne themselves too narrowly: the fast one, the strong one, the consistent one. When that identity is challenged, it can feel like losing a part of yourself. In reality, it is often an invitation — a chance to remember why you started running in the frst place.
Our reasons for running evolve naturally. Early on, it might be about competition, personal records, and pushing limits. Later, it may become about mental clarity, staying healthy, or simply carving out an hour of
https://www.osaka-marathon.com/
peace. None of these reasons is better than another. They are simply diferent seasons of the same relationship.
Change also breeds creativity. When high mileage is no longer possible, strength work or shorter, sharper sessions open new doors. When solo runs feel empty, a running community can become your greatest source of energy. Constraints frequently reveal paths you would never have discovered otherwise.
Running also teaches a deep humility. You can follow every detail of a plan and still have a terrible day. You can do everything right and still fall short. In that uncertainty lives a quiet freedom: the freedom to let go of rigid expectations and simply show up to the experience of moving.
Sometimes change asks you to slow down and practice patience. Sometimes it leads you to new distances or unfamiliar trails. Sometimes it simply asks you to keep showing up, even when it feels harder than it used to.
True consistency is not repeating the same thing forever. I t is staying connected to running while everything around it shifts — staying fexible without losing the thread that brings you back.
The best runners are not those who avoid change. They are the ones who adapt while keeping their love for the sport alive.
So when your running life changes — and
it will — do not fght it. Adjust your stride. Discover new goals. Keep moving, even if the movement looks diferent now.
Be patient with yourself. Not every season will be your strongest. Not every run will feel profound. But over time, these seasons build something larger than any single performance. They build you.
