25th AIMS World Congress Tromsø, Norway · June 18–20, 2026

T

he Midnight Sun Marathon Foundation welcomes all AIMS members to the 25th World Congress of AIMS, June 18–20, 2026. The congress will take place in Tromsø, Norway the same weekend as the Midnight Sun Marathon. We will provide more information on the program, but here are some important things to remember. at 69n, 350km north of the arctic Circle, on a small island surrounded by majestic mountains and jords, you will ind Tromsø.

The city has a population of 80.000, quite small compared to most places, but it is one of the most populated places in the arctic.

Being inside the arctic, Tromsø can ofer some of the most spectacular natural phenomena. in winter, the northern Lights dance across the dark sky, and in summer the midnight sun creates a special atmosphere.

From may 21st to July 22nd the sun never sets, and you can experience 24-hour daylight.

The midnight sun marathon race has been one of the most spectacular running events since it started in 1990. The marathon starts at 20:30/ 8:30 Pm, and most runners will cross the inish line after midnight – wearing sunglasses. The race ofers marathon, Half marathon, 10km and 5km distances. in 2025 more than 10,000 registered for the event.

Being far away from the rest of europe one must plan the travel.

Tromsø has an international airport with direct lights to the major cities in northern europe.

Usually we would recommend lying through Copenhagen or Oslo. norway is a part of schengen and most nationalities will have the same rules for travelling to norway as they have travelling to other countries in the schengen area.

Please ind information about applying for a Visitors Visa at the UDi website. if you are planning to participate please contact midnight sun marathon to get the personal invitation.

The Congress will take place at the scandic ishavshotel. Participants will stay at this hotel.

The transfer time from the airport is 15 minutes by bus or taxi. The organiser will arrange this for all participants travelling to Tromsø.

The daytime temperature will probably be 14 – 20° C. at night it will drop even if the sun is up. we will of course send all the participants guidance on how to dress for an arctic summer.

They endure a variety of terrain including sandy and hand-mowed grass trails, paved roads, and somewhat rocky and/or small water crossings. on the isolated course, runners can take in the surrounding beauty of golden tall grass, various canyons and sightings of local villagers and farmers. although runners must be self-suicient the race provides several aid stations to include bottled water, potatoes, fruit and Coca-Cola. Race team members scout the course by aTV’s with supplies and ensure all runners are well. as the hours pass the sun can become grueling with little to no escape from the heat. This is a race that deines the runner and requires self-motivation and joy of the sport to generate the fortitude to complete the distance. The course is described as diicult mostly due to the terrain and heat, as the elevation gain is only an estimated 700 feet.

The Madagascar Marathon is not only about the race though: the destination itself is a marvel. Volcano Marathon CHILE LookIng ahead | 28 JUNE 2026 on race day you start from the anakena Beach, with the sea’s rhythmic waves accompanying your irst steps. From there the route becomes rugged and wild: unpaved dirt paths, grassy stretches, volcanic rock underfoot – especially near the crater of Rano kau Volcano. as you run you’re not just traveling across kilometres – you’re traversing ancient landscapes shaped by volcanoes. around the 22-mile mark you reach the summit of Rano kau, the high point of the course. From there a downhill stretch leads into the small town of hanga Roa, where the inish line awaits near the hotel. Total elevation gain is about 2,000 ft (≈610 m), with a notably steep climb of ~800 ft between miles 19 and 21, followed by a rapid descent between miles 24 and 25.

The run is only part of the story. This marathon blends athletic challenge with deep cultural immersion. The island is home to the iconic Moai statues, monolithic stone igures carved by the original inhabitants centuries ago, and as a runner, you pass through landscapes that echo with ancient history. e all know that regular training and sports exercises require healthy and nutritious food.

We are also aware that we require suicient fruits and vegetables, vitamins, enough water and proteins, but the importance of an adequate intake of calories and carbohydrates is often underestimated.

Energy deficiency in endurance athletes and the RED-S Syndrome Especially in athletes training for endurance events like a half or full marathon, an Ironman triathlon or trail running we often ind a serious lack of energy supply throughout the day and around the training. There are several reasons for this energy deicit: Besides the idea of reducing the body weight to ensure a successful competition, the will to own a “perfect” body or the simple lack of information about how much energy is necessary during a whole day of training may lead to a syndrome we call “RED-S”. This stands for Relative- Energy- Deicit- Syndrome and is a full bundle of symptoms we may ind. Women are more likely to sufer from this disease, but there are also many male athletes among this population.

Physical and mental impacts of energy deficiency The main symptoms especially in women are dysregulation of the menstrual cycle, Amenorrhoea, an increased number of infections, stress fractures and other injuries, reduced stress tolerance, disturbance of

Relative Energy Deiciency Syndrome in endurance athletes sleep, mental health and concentration, trouble with digestion and a bunch of other symptoms. We also ind a reduced fertility and a loss of bone density. In men the signs are not as obvious as in women, as for example hormonal imbalances are not as clearly visible. But symptoms like an increased heart rate during rest but a lack of rise during intense training, infections and stress fractures, changes in sleep, concentration and mental health but also reduced libido can be a hint to search for the energy balance.

Besides these important changes in the health of athletes, the reduced energy intake may also lead to a reduced success during training and competition, as the training stimulus cannot be implemented in the body perfectly.

Fueling and recovery for optimal performance To minimize the risk of RED-S, there are some mistakes we need to avoid: Make sure that the total amount of calories taken throughout a day is in balance with the duration and intensity of your training.

The rise of the intensity or frequency of training must be followed by an increase of nutrients, especially carbohydrates. If

Physical and mental impacts of energy deficiency The main symptoms especially in women are dysregulation of the menstrual cycle, Amenorrhoea, an increased number of infections, stress fractures and other injuries, reduced stress tolerance, disturbance of sleep, mental health and concentration, trouble with digestion and a bunch of other symptoms. We also ind a reduced fertility and a loss of bone density. In men the signs are not as obvious as in women, as for example hormonal imbalances are not as clearly visible. But symptoms like an increased heart rate during rest but a lack of

rise during intense training, infections and stress fractures, changes in sleep, concentration and mental health but also reduced libido can be a hint to search for the energy balance.

Besides these important changes in the health of athletes, the reduced energy intake may also lead to a reduced success during training and competition, as the training stimulus cannot be implemented in the body perfectly.

Fueling and recovery for optimal performance To minimize the risk of RED-S, there are some mistakes we need to avoid: Make sure that the total amount of calories taken throughout a day is in balance with the duration and intensity of your training.

The rise of the intensity or frequency of training must be followed by an increase of nutrients, especially carbohydrates. If you like to train in the morning make sure that you supply your body with nutritious “fuel” before you start your workout. After an intense session recharge your batteries within about 30 minutes. The focus should be rehydration, proteins for the recovery of muscles and building of new muscles and inally the illing of glycogen storage.

Early intervention to protect health and performance If you notice signs of possible RED-S in yourself or in athletes around you, you should not hesitate to seek professional support. Sports physicians and qualiied nutrition specialists can help identify the causes of the energy deicit, minimize health risks, and develop an individualized plan for training and nutrition. Early diagnosis and appropriate adjustments make it possible to sustainably maintain performance, wellbeing, and long-term health.

riven to make progress, or scared of the alternative, each year we resolve to be bigger, better, faster, smarter, healthier or richer than ever before. We know where we’re going, and if we’re ahead of the game, how we’ll get there too.

Invariably, with resolution set, one of two things occurs: either we make it happen or, as if by magic, the urgency and importance drain from the dream. With a box of excuses primed and ready, normal service is resumed – the pull of the comfort zone triumphs. The personal development equivalent of gravity drags us back to reality, keeping our feet irmly planted on the spot.

Our comfort zone exists for one reason – to keep us safe. But if we’re not mindful, it can also help us to stack up a lifetime of unrealised ambitions.

A little regular discomfort goes a long way

American personal development guru Jim Rohn once said, “Get comfortable being uncomfortable, because that’s where the real growth happens.”

Your goal should be not to grow beyond your comfort zone, but to expand it.

Remember how you were scared or apprehensive on your irst day at a new school or a new job, but after a week or so, it felt normal? How about the time you psyched yourself up to add an extra 5 kg at the gym, and two weeks later, you were ready to add some more? That’s your comfort zone growing. now imagine that place where you exist without additional efort, fear or apprehension, as an elastic band that its easily around you.

Make one big push to break through the band, and you may ind yourself thrown back to the starting point, wondering what on earth happened as the elastic recoils back into place. don’t push at all, and you’ll stay stuck exactly where you are. But ind the sweet spot by pushing the boundary consistently, little by little – run for a minute longer, up the pace a fraction, sign up for a challenge you know you have time to train for – and the elastic will stretch with your ambition to become your new comfort zone.

You may not always get the balance right and understanding that failure is part of the process will help you to keep pushing. As your awareness grows, so does your appetite for challenge. Remember, a little regular discomfort goes a long way!

hen the starting signal for the ADAC Marathon Hannover is given on 12 April Stefanie Eichel will be celebrating a very special anniversary.

The 58-year-old will then be standing at the starting line in front of the town hall of Lower Saxony’s capital for the 25th time, making her probably the world’s longestserving active race director.

Stephanie Eichel sends out 30,000 participants in the various disciplines onto one of Germany’s fastest courses. She freely admits it will be an emotional occasion with a tear or two in her eyes. As managing director of the event agency “eichels,” she runs a company with just under 20 employees that “gets the city moving”.

In addition to the marathon the company is also responsible for two major triathlons and countless other running events every year. In addition to the New Year’s Eve Run in Hanover, one of the largest in Germany, Eichel’s portfolio also includes the “Sparkassen Laufpass der Region”. This is a running series that has been unique in Germany for over 20 years, combining nearly 40 individual events into a series that continues to grow every year.

But the centrepiece remains the ADAC Marathon, which has worked its way into Germany’s top ive with annually growing participation numbers. It has already made a name for itself far beyond the country’s borders under the titles TUI Marathon and HAJ Marathon.

Stefanie Eichel is proud to be hosting the national championships as part of the ADAC Marathon for the third time in a row but, above all, to have won the hearts of the people of Hannover and the 250,000 spectators who line the route.

“Every year, we celebrate a 42.195-kilometer street party in front of a fantastic backdrop and with enthusiastic visitors who cheer on our athletes over all distances and literally carry them along the route,” says the race director. She is particularly proud of one project within the marathon: “In 2025, we
