At the beginning of 2025 a new international running initiative was born: the Turkic Alliance of Long Runs, or TAN Series.
Founded by four Turkic countries – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan, TAN unites the organisers of the region’s most prominent races into a series with a powerful message: to share the rich cultural heritage and stunning natural beauty of the Turkic world through the joy of running.
The TAN Series is the frst initiative of its kind in the region. It brings together the traditions and spirit of four nations and also promotes international sports tourism on a new scale. With more than 36,000 runners from around the world expected to take part across the series, TAN Series aims to elevate the organisation of races through shared expertise, loyal running communities, and collective momentum.
Inspired by iconic global series such as SuperHalfs and Abbott World Marathon Majors, TAN Series introduces a unique blend of athletic challenge and cultural immersion. Participants who complete all fve races will earn a special commemorative medal and the title
of TAN International Finisher.
TAN Series offers a Turkic counterpart to the World Marathon Majors and the Superhalfs – highlighting breathtaking courses and local traditions across Baku, Bishkek, Almaty, Turkistan, and Samarkand. Each city represents a unique aspect of the Turkic world.
The name “TAN” holds deep meaning – it translates as “dawn” or “daybreak” in Turkic languages. It symbolizes a fresh start, new goals, and the inspiring power of every sunrise. The races will be held in iconic cities with deep historical roots and scenic courses, uniting runners in a rhythm of sport and culture.

On 5 October 2025 Cologne will once again be transformed into a huge running arena: the 27th edition of the Generali Cologne Marathon attracts tens of thousands of runners from all over the world to the river Rhine every year.
Whether marathon, half marathon or relay marathon the event offers the right format for every performance level and impresses with a unique atmosphere, great organisation and an enthusiastic audience.
As a participant you can feel the special atmosphere in the city even before the start. On this day the cathedral city comes alive for sport: crowds line the streets, music groups cheer on the runners and residents transform their neighbourhoods into small celebration miles. The run through Cologne is an emotional experience that will live long in the memory.
The title race is the classic marathon over 42.195 kilometres with 10,000 participants. The route leads past many of the city’s sights – over the Rhine past the Rheinauhafen harbour, Rudolfplatz and the imposing Cologne Cathedral, where the fnish line is located. Ambitious runners can chase their best time here, while leisure runners can soak up the atmosphere along the route.
Continued on page 13
Continued from page 11
If the full marathon is too long for you the half marathon is an excellent alternative. The 21.1 kilometres with 20,000 participants also runs through the heart of the city and offers a great running experience at half the distance. The half marathon starts at Cologne-Deutz and – like all distances – has a spectacular fnish in front of Cologne Cathedral.
A special highlight is the relay marathon in which four runners share the marathon distance. Whether with friends, colleagues or in a club – the relay marathon combines a sporting challenge with team spirit and provides plenty of shared emotions.
The Generali Cologne Marathon is a celebration of sport, an event for the whole city and a real highlight in the running calendar. Anyone who has taken part once usually comes back – as a participant, spectator or volunteer. On 5 October 2025, it’s that time again: Cologne is running –and you can be part of it.

The frst Royal Victoria Marathon held in 1980 had 700 runners and cost six Canadian dollars to enter.
Times have changed over the last 45 years and this October organizers expect to have more than 15,000 participants in the fve different distances offered – the largest feld ever. And yes, it costs more than CAD 6 to enter.
In the early years the race was marketed as “a marathon with class” and, 45 years later, it is still an event where each participant is valued and where the organization prides itself on staging a world class event with a small town vibe. Hosted by the Victoria Marathon Society it is an event put on by runners, for runners.
The City of Victoria is on Vancouver Island. It
has been ranked as the number one smallest city in the world as voted by Condé Nast Traveler’s 2023 and 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards.
With a start and fnish line in front of the iconic British Columbia Parliament Buildings in the Inner Harbour, the post-race festival atmosphere is electric. The course goes along the waterfront, through downtown Victoria and then out through the quaint neighbourhoods and scenic parks of Victoria and Oak Bay, with beautiful ocean views throughout. The course is lined with cheering supporters.
The marathon has an elevation gain of 182 metres, with gentle hills providing a mild challenge, but it is a balanced course that is great for frst-time marathoners and seasoned runners.
The race sees many personal bests and Boston qualifcations and is also a World Athletics sanctioned event.
Known throughout the years for its exceptional “swag”, this year the marathoners will receive a jacket to commemorate the 45th year. Each distance includes a different swag item, as well as fnisher medals specifc to that distance.
The event started a fundraising arm in 2005. The CHEK Charity Pledge Program has now raised over CAD 2.35 million (1.5m EUR) for charities. This year 20 charities are part of the program with the expectation of exceeding the 2.5 million dollar mark.
The 2024 event sold out early and the same is expected for 2025. The Island Savings 5K and Thrifty Foods Kids Run take place on Saturday, 11 October with the Marathon, Half Marathon and Westland Insurance 8K on Sunday, 12 October 2025. The RVM Expo runs from Friday, 10 October through to 12 October. www.runvictoriamarathon.com ■ www.facebook.com/Victoria.Marathon/ ■

High up in the pristine mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, where the air is thin and the spirit of adventure thrives, the Tawang Marathon offers runners a once-ina-lifetime experience.
Held in the scenic town of Tawang located at an altitude of over 10,000 feet (3050m), this unique event combines the thrill of long-distance running with the cultural richness and natural beauty of northeast India. The race boasts high organizational standards, is approved by Indian Athletics, and is a member race of AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races).
The course is measured to international standards, attracting serious runners from across India and around the globe. With one of the highest prize purses in all of Northeast India, the Tawang Marathon has established itself as a premier destination for elite and amateur runners alike.
Jointly organized by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and the Indian Army the Tawang Marathon is a celebration of endurance, unity, and heritage. Participants come from various countries to test their limits at high altitude and to experience the unique culture of the region. The marathon was frst launched in 2023 and, in its frst two editions, has grown rapidly drawing nearly 5000 participants across all race categories. Timed races include the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km and 5km distances, making the event accessible to runners of all abilities.
Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Pema Khandu, who sees Arunachal Pradesh as an international sports hub, the event plays a pivotal role in promoting athleticism while showcasing the state’s unmatched cultural tapestry. The Tawang Marathon also serves as a platform to promote the Fit India movement, encouraging youth across the Northeast to embrace health, ftness, and the values of discipline and perseverance through sport.
What makes the Tawang Marathon stand apart is how deeply it is rooted in the region’s identity. Every element of the race refects the cultural heritage of Tawang – from the traditional Buddhist-style ceremonial start gate to the fnisher medals designed with local motifs. Finishers are honoured not only with a medal but also with a traditional white Buddhist scarf, known as a khada, symbolizing blessings and peace. The event’s offcial mascot, TABOS – where “Ta” stands for Tawang and “Bos” is a local word for yak – embodies the local community’s close connection with agriculture and the central role of the yak in high-altitude life. TABOS adds both charm and authenticity to the race, serving as a cultural ambassador of sorts for this extraordinary event.
For runners the Tawang Marathon is both physically demanding and spiritually rewarding. The altitude presents a true challenge: oxygen levels are lower, the climbs are steeper and the terrain, though breathtaking, demands respect. “Organizing a marathon at such a high altitude is no small feat,” says Race Director and seasoned Coach Dr. Rahul Sharma. “Our focus is on safety, acclimatization, and delivering an unforgettable experience for every participant.”
To that end, the organizing team ensures runners arrive several days in advance to adjust to the elevation. Medical teams are stationed
throughout the course, hydration points are strategically placed, and every detail is meticulously planned to allow participants to focus on their run and soak in the magic of Tawang.
Beyond the race, Tawang offers much to explore. Runners and visitors often take time to visit the majestic Tawang Monastery – the second largest in the world, serene Madhuri Lake and the historic Sela Pass. These destinations add depth to the marathon experience, transforming it into a journey of discovery.
The Tawang Marathon has quickly earned a reputation among both amateur and elite runners for its combination of challenge, beauty, and purpose. It is a model event for race directors around the world, proving that with proper planning, community support, and a clear vision, even the most remote regions can host world-class running events.
As Arunachal Pradesh continues its ascent as a sporting destination under the stewardship of leaders like CM Mr. Pema Khandu, the Tawang Marathon stands as a beacon of possibility –where sport meets culture, endurance meets elevation, and runners become storytellers of an extraordinary adventure.

the TAN series includes four other events held in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan, showcasing the shared heritage, diversity, and unity of the Turkic world through running.

EVA Air Half Marathon was inaugurated in 2018 and is one of several races in Chinese Taipei certifed by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).
The inaugural event featured three race categories: Half Marathon, 10km and 3km. From the beginning Nike Run Club has served as the offcial training partner, offering pace teams on race day and a variety of support, including professional training programs and warm-up exercises to help participants prepare.
In addition to the well-received race route and excellent event services EVA Air expanded the race in 2022 to include a full marathon category. That same year the event launched the “Seedling Program” to foster the development of young marathon talent in Chinese Taipei.
A special award category, the “10K Seedling Program – Individual Group,” was introduced and in 2023 the initiative evolved into the “Seedling Program – Campus Tour,” which brings professional coaches to schools across different cities in Chinese Taipei. These sessions are led by national athletes who share their training insights, promote proper running techniques, and help young runners develop and improve. Moreover, a portion of the registration fees is donated to charitable organisations each year, blending athletic spirit with social responsibility.
A unique medal awaits fnishers
EVA Air Marathon is renowned for its generous fnisher rewards. Medals are uniquely designed in the shape of aircraft engine turbines. Full marathon fnishers receive a windproof thermal cape while half marathon and 10km fnishers are awarded stylish and practical towels. The event also calls upon the extensive resources of the Evergreen Group, featuring an impressive selection of prizes including a total of 30 fight tickets from EVA Air and UNI Air, TWD 50,000 (EUR 1470) travel vouchers from EverFun Holiday, EVA Air’s Infnity MileageLands miles, and discount codes for EVA Air tickets, as well as dining vouchers from Evergreen Hotels. These generous rewards ensure that participants leave with more than just memories, and make the event a global attraction for runners worldwide.
To extend the running experience beyond Chinese Taipei, EVA Air collaborates with travel agencies to promote the “Run to the World” project. This initiative helps runners from Chinese Taipei participate in major international marathons, including the Brisbane Marathon, Hokkaido Marathon, Mt. Fuji Marathon, and three of the world’s seven marathon majors: the Berlin Marathon, New York City Marathon and Chicago Marathon. The project also allows participants to combine their race journey with sightseeing and local experiences.
The 2025 EVA Air Marathon is scheduled for 26 October. Runners from around the world are invited to book a fight with EVA Air and come to Taipei to participate in this vibrant and internationally celebrated event.

stunning waterfront views. As you line up with thousands of fellow runners there’s a palpable sense of excitement and camaraderie. The starting gun fres and you’re off, your feet pounding the pavement as you make your way towards the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Continued on page 35
Continued from page 33
Crossing the Harbour Bridge on foot is a highlight of the race – a once-a-year opportunity afforded only to runners in the Auckland Marathon – with panoramic views of the Waitematā Harbour and the city skyline. The climb is challenging, but the reward is worth every step.
Descending into the city the course takes you through some of Auckland’s most iconic locations. You’ll pass by the bustling Viaduct Harbour and wind through the business district before running a scenic out and back along Tamaki Drive with the sparkling waters of the Hauraki Gulf alongside you. The fnal fourish takes you into Victoria Park, packed with supporters and spectators cheering you across the fnish line.
Amidst the party, giving back to charity is an integral part of the Auckland Marathon. There are eight offcial charities aligned with the event this year and plenty more being supported by runners through their participation.

Nepalgunj Marathon, Nepal
BY T S T HAK U RI
Nepalgunj has been a city of harmony where people from different regions, castes and sects live together.
However, the city was affected by the armed confict before the promulgation of the new constitution in 2015. Sectarianism hindered regular development and peace was a much needed healing balm.
We envisaged the marathon project to lead larger society in the direction of peace. We chose 21 November as race day for what we called the Nepalgunj Peace Marathon as the date was when the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed.
Only two places in Nepal had previously staged a Marathon: Kathmandu and Pokhara. Nepalgunj became the third. Nepalgunj has proved itself over the last decade by introducing creative concepts such as the Nepalgunj 10km Night Run, held for the frst time on 19 September 2024. The message of the night race is that Nepalgunj is decent, cultured, peaceful and supportive. This event has showcased the strength of the city.
In 2019 and 2020 the world was shaken by the Covid-19 pandemic and Nepal was equally affected. Nepal had not yet made selections
for the Tokyo Olympic Marathon but a sponsor was found for holding the qualifying race in Nepalgunj when Pradeep Chhajed, CEO of KL Dugad Oil, stepped forward.
Nepalgunj was one of the few signifcant events that did not stop during the Covid period. The Government of Nepal gave permission for 25 male and 25 female runners to compete. They did so wearing face shields and masks even during the race.
With the race’s credentials established efforts were made to connect with the international community. Joining AIMS and becoming the frst-ever Nepali member of the association was followed up at the 23rd World Congress of AIMS in Osaka by putting in a bid to host the 24th World Congress. 67 members voted in favour of Nepalgunj while 85 went to Midnight Sun Marathon in Norway.
We can fairly say that running is in the blood of our ancestors and elder generations who used to walk miles to school and back every day, uphill and downhill. Running is possible in all kinds of landscapes and it is an appropriate sport in a Nepali context. If we can make it part of our daily life it will contribute to the physical, mental and emotional health of the population. Let us participate in the Marathon every year; let us celebrate it as a festival. We strongly believe that our positive initiatives will help in the growth of our country’s health. www.nepalgunjmarathon.com

This year’s Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America played out on an historic and sun-flled Patriots’ Day, with Kenyan champions Sharon Lokedi and John Korir etching their names in marathon lore.
Lokedi’s course record 2:17:22 happened to come on the 50th anniversary of another monumental moment in women’s race history: a trailblazing run by Marilyn Bevans.
It was on 21 April 1975 that Bevans, a native of Maryland, ran 2:55:52 to place fourth at the 79th Boston Marathon. Bevans’ perseverance and determination made history, as she became the frst U.S.-born African American woman to break three hours in the marathon. She’d go on to fnish second at Boston two years later in 1977, running 2:51:12.
Bevans’ mark on running and Boston history was celebrated on this Marathon Monday (21 April) as she was recognized at the
fnish line and took part in a special event held by the Black Unicorn Marathoners, a group that celebrates and connects BIPOC runners associated with the Boston Marathon, from qualifers and charity runners to invited entrants and alumni.
On race day, a team of four athletes – Alisa Harvey, Michelle Wheeler, Erica StanleyDottin, and Tay Artis – ran in Marilyn’s honor celebrating fve decades since her
pioneering feat. Wheeler placed 12th in the wheelchair division and wore her Black Unicorn Marathoners uniform and medal with pride, noting on Instagram that “It was also an incredible honor to spend time with trailblazers, [1975 wheelchair champion] Bob Hall and Marilyn Bevans. To Ms. Bevans, thank you for allowing me represent you today.”
Back in 2013 Bevans was inducted into the National Black Marathoners Association Hall of Fame. She continues to be an inspirational force showcasing the power of running for athletes of all backgrounds. At Boston she mentioned focusing on an upcoming 10K, where she’s aiming to have fun and channel some of her speed from 50 years ago.

The great public response to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Košice Peace Marathon (founded in 1924) became the driving force behind the creation of a truly unique exhibition.
This idea was strongly supported by the city itself, which allocated a part of a building in the pedestrian zone – next to the city’s most iconic landmarks – for this purpose.
After several months of intense work and extensive reconstruction the new museum, named MarathonPoint, was ceremonially opened on 6 May 2025. Following similar institutions in Athens and Berlin, this is likely only the third museum in the world dedicated solely to the marathon.
The exhibition is divided into several sections showcasing the history and present of these iconic races in a variety of ways.
The centerpiece is a one-third-size bronze model of the famous marathon runner statue, originally unveiled in Košice back in 1960. Among the most notable artifacts are also: the oldest preserved medal from 1926, documents and badges from the 1924 Olympic Games – where the idea
to establish a marathon in Košice was born, fully functional stopwatches from 1930 and a bust of Olympic champion Abebe Bikila, who triumphed in Košice in 1961.
The richest part of the exhibition is the digital Marathonpedia. Through fve touchscreens visitors can access a database containing more than one million characters. This allows searches of names, performances, and details of every runner who has ever crossed the fnish line in Košice. There is an extensive presentation of past winners and many global sports stars who visited this marathon. In the richly developed timeline visitors can discover details from each edition of the race, browse an engaging flm archive, explore a wide range of statistical overviews and read short articles about many curiosities related to this marathon.
These historical artifacts and data are complemented by modern art installations that use elements of media art. The creators employed cutting-edge technologies to create a captivating fusion of image, data fow, and sound – resulting in a presentation that at times evokes a mystical atmosphere.
After an inspiring tour visitors can relax and chat in the Marathon Café, an integral part of MarathonPoint, open daily from 08:00 to 20:00.
I’ve learned to plan my training and better manage my blood sugar before, during and after running.
None of this is simple. There are sessions that must be cut short, sleepless nights after hypoglycemia and days when control slips away. But every fnish line is more than a goal; it’s a silent victory over all those challenges.
I’ve raced in several cities but Berlin holds a special meaning. I recently returned there to run the last half marathon of the SuperHalfs series
and, even though I wasn’t in my best shape due to an injury, I felt stronger than ever. I didn’t beat my personal best but I fnished with the clear sense that I could have – and to me that was a major win.
I hope to make my marathon debut next year. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while but have kept postponing. I’d love that debut to be in the Berlin Marathon – a city that has left a lasting mark on me, both personally and athletically. We’ll see.
Besides being a runner I’m also a father. I know that the example I set is important – not only for
my son but for everyone who, like me, lives with type 1 diabetes. I want to show that, with commitment and resilience, it’s possible to overcome obstacles and pursue our goals.
I’m grateful to my family, who understand and support this commitment to running even while knowing that it means giving up some of our time together. I also thank Distance Running magazine for the opportunity to share this message and help raise awareness about the reality of athletes with diabetes.
Being diabetic doesn’t defne me. Being a runner does.

ZURICH MARATÓN DE SEVILLA IS THE SIXTH FASTEST MARATHON IN HISTORY!
So fast! The men marathon record is 2h’03’27’’ (2024) and the women’s record is 2h18’52’’ (2022). And it’s the marathon with most men clocking in under 2h10’ in the entire history of the world (41), and it’s the second in the world with the most finisher women under 2h30’ (29).
Close your eyes for a moment. Enjoy your passion for running and for marathons in the Andalusian sun in February. Live some magical days in Seville, with all its history, the unique atmosphere of its streets, its delicious cuisine. Visit the Giralda, the Torre del Oro, the Maestranza and, of course, the Plaza de España...
Have the opportunity to embrace 42 kilometers along the crowded city center of the city, with son many people cheering you up to take you to the finish line.
A perfect marathon to achieve your new personal best in a completely flat course. It’s the flattest marathon in Europe and has the highest percentage of finishers below 3 hours!
A marathon with a high quality organization, absolutely top, as accredited by its World Athletics Elite Label, with an extraordinary pasta meal that you will not find in any other marathon.
Stop dreaming of living a marathon in Seville... See you at the starting line of one of the most beautiful cities in the world in 2026!
