24th AIMS World Congress Following on from the successful World Congress in Osaka, Japan, AIMS and DHA Vietnam are delighted to announce that the XXIV World Congress of AIMS will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam from 14 to 17 November, 2024 in conjunction with the Halong Bay Heritage Marathon.

New members Antarctic Polar Rotary Rain Race ATA Run Goa IND The inaugural Antarctic Polar Race will take place near Novo, Antarctica in November 2024. A unique concept, the event actually encompasses more than one race, with distances of 1 mile, 10k, half-marathon, marathon, 100km and 100 miles available.

Launched in 2015 by the Rotary Charitable Trust of Porvorim in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Porvorim, the Rotary Rain Run Goa has grown into a monumental event set to celebrate its 10th edition in 2024.

Halong Bay Heritage Marathon VIE

The Poseidon Athens Half Marathon, a pioneering event since 2010, unfolds annually on the third Sunday of April along the stunning southern coastal front of Athens.

As the irst and only international marathon to be successfully organised continuously since 2015 in Ha Long, the Ha Long Bay Heritage Marathon has been recognised as a premier global running event.

This historic race, the irst of its kind in the city, navigates through key landmarks, offering participants an enchanting backdrop.

Contours of the city The Sihanoukville International Half Marathon was founded in 2012, after the Tsunami disasters in Asia in 2011, with the purpose of protecting the environment and loving nature.

This signiicant sports tourism marathon event is held in Sihanoukville Province (named after King Norodom Sihanouk). It is known locally as Kampong Som and is located 230km southwest of the capital city of Phnom Penh. It has become one of the best seaside destinations in Asia.

Half marathon runners will enjoy a beautiful course which includes more than 13km along the pristine beach of white sand and a long line of pine trees. All races start in the early morning from 05.30 onwards at the famous Ochcheuteal Beach. Runners head out on a beautiful beach road and each category turns into the city centre roads before returning to the inish line at the same start-inish gate. More than 2000 runners participated in the 2023 race after the event had been suspended for four years, irst due to reconstruction of the city’s infrastructure and then the Covid pandemic period.

Known for its beautiful beaches, the province revolves around fabulous seafood, water-sports and its surrounding islands. The popular beaches which line the contours of the city are the Victory Beach, Deum Chrey Beach, Independence Beach, Sokha Beach, Serendipity Beach, Ochheuteal Beach, Samdech Hun Sen Beach, Hawaii Beach, Ream Beach, and the Otres Beach. The Sihanoukville International Half Marathon is held at Ochcheuteal Beach during the Khmer

Although it only reached adulthood (18 years) this year the ČSOB Bratislava Marathon has become one of the most popular running events in Slovakia and in the Central European region. From being a small local event – with 760 runners at its premiere in 2006 – it grew thanks to the organisational team led by Jozef and Peter Pukalovič, into an event with over 10,000 participants from more than 50 countries. It can conidently compete with similar events all across Europe, ofering perfect organisation and a great atmosphere.

The growth of the marathon in the city on the Danube was such that it reached more than 10,000 runners in 2016 and maintained that number until 2019 before Covid impacted. In the irst post-pandemic race 10,100 runners participated in 2023. The 19th ČSOB Bratislava Marathon, taking place on the irst weekend of April 2024, ofers the opportunity to spend a wonderful weekend in a city where European history was written while experiencing the unique atmosphere of a running event suitable for families as well as competitive runners. This event is a great choice for an extended weekend in the Slovak capital for the whole family. The event begins with the “Marathon Village” in the centre of Bratislava. Near a shopping centre and the Slovak National Theatre, the Marathon Hub is open from Thursday. Various workshops, sports lectures, discussions with famous athletes and experts are organised here. Foreign and non-local runners enjoy the “History Run”, a 5km-long running tour of the historical centre of Bratislava with a professional guide. You can join this for free either on Friday or Saturday (5–6 April). You will stop at historical landmarks and the commentary is provided in both Slovak and English. Looking ahead | 28 April 2024 Maratón Internacional de Mendoza, Argentina The Mendoza International Marathon (MIM) is the oldest event in the Province of Mendoza and one of the main races in the country. The forthcoming 24th edition will again attract record numbers of competitors in the four distances of 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km and 4km. More than 10,000 runners will participate, The distinctive feature of the event is that it consists of four starts in different parts of Mendoza and a common inish, in the heart of the General San Martín Park. Without a doubt the MIM is one of the races with the most attractive scenery on the marathon circuit: mountains, rivers, vineyards and an impressive inish at the majestic gates of the General San Martin Park, designed by the French architect Carlos Thays. The MIM has again been declared an Event of National Interest by the Presidency of the Nation for promoting sport, culture and tourism and the considerable economic impact it has in the country and in the Province of Mendoza. The Filipides Foundation, organiser of this event, has forged various alliances this year with the aim of encouraging the practice of sport

Beyond the Marathon, the province of Mendoza is recognised worldwide because it is the heart of the Argentine wine region, famous for its Malbecs and other red wines. A multi-event spectacular Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, featuring the Tartan Ottawa International Marathon, continues to be the biggest and best weekend running and walking festival in Canada. Approximately 200,000 spectators line the course to cheer on participants along the Rideau Canal and at oficial cheering stations throughout the races. The happiest marathon on earth Countless runners return year after year to face the iconic challenge of the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon. Many regard it as the ‘Happiest Marathon on Earth’, with the 2023 event marking the 15th year of this destination event. From the moment you arrive for the marathon weekend in the Falls to the moment you leave, the spirit of joy envelops you. The sheer exhilaration of running in the wild African bush, with the real possibility of coming face to face with an elephant, buffalo or hippo, adds an element of excitement and freedom seldom found elsewhere.

Runners hear ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ – the local term for the sound of the Victoria Falls plummeting hundreds of metres down into a gorge of immense beauty. They pass age-old upside-down trees (the African Baobab) and dancing to the beat of pulsating African drums at various spectator points. This is a race packed with joyous feeling and unique memories. Safety measures limit numbers in the full marathon which crosses over the iconic bridge spanning the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Applications poured in for the 2023 event, forcing entries to close early on reaching maximum capacity. There were over 4000 participants representing 38 different countries across the full

Armed rangers stand guard to ensure runners’ safety and regular water points along the route keep runners hydrated and motivated. The spray of the Falls and welcoming water tunnels provide refreshing relief from the African sun. There would be nothing more heartbreaking than inishing your irst marathon and inding out that it wasn’t quite 42.2km. The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon is AIMS and World Athletics certiied and timed using disposable timing chips. Race results are effectively on livetime and uploaded to the website immediately. Race day winds down with a sunset cruise for those booking an oficial marathon weekend travel package through Wild Frontiers – perfect for putting up tired feet and enjoying a sundowner. The race committee is heavily invested in the uplift of the local community. This year the start and inish line were moved to the local Government school – Baobab Primary – where a facelift of all the amenities, school grounds and ablutions was undertaken by the marathon committee to ensure the new ‘home’ of the marathon was in tip-top shape to welcome runners. The beneits of these much-needed upgrades will be enjoyed by the pupils for years to come. Participants are strongly encouraged

Hamburg half – double fun As one of the largest events of its kind in Germany the hella hamburg half attracts participants from all over the world to the metropolis on the River Elbe every year. The 30th anniversary edition this summer promises to be the biggest running party in the event’s history. When countless running fans start singing the traditional crowd chant at the start on the Reeperbahn (a world-famous nightlife district in the heart of the city) veterans will know that things are getting serious. Then the starting signal is just a few moments away, when over 12,000 participants will once again set off on a journey of partying and sightseeing. The event is an experience. Marco Grundt

Running the Reeperbahn in the harbour city

It starts with the course. The city route was designed to accommodate as many tourist attractions as possible in 21.0975 kilometres. There are almost 50 of them. It starts on Hamburg’s “sinful mile” – this is what the locals call it – where the party animals are on the streets instead of the pavements for a change. From there it’s down to the harbour, past the Landungsbrücken (an impressive waterfront building and a major public transport hub for ferries), along the historic Speicherstadt (a UNESCO World heritage site), through the Wallring Tunnel (with DJ), over the Kennedy Bridge, where you get a great view of the Jungfernstieg (the city’s foremost boulevard) and around the beautiful Alster lake until the inish line at the expo. These are just some of the sightseeing highlights. There are so many that you can afford to miss a few along the way.

With DJ support, live music, African, South American, and Japanese drums, real Swiss alphorns, a German shanty choir, several cheering zones, sign spinners and acrobats, you are practically carried along the course. One acoustic and visual feast follows the next – and the kilometres ly by. The people of Hamburg and the running crews also play their part of course. Approaching the inish line a blue carpet is rolled out for the participants while they are Marco Grundt

applauded by a frenetic crowd. This is their moment and they earned it. A few metres later they are oficial inishers of the hella hamburg half – only about 1.5km from the starting point on the Reeperbahn, where the party began. After bathing in applause they may want to take a real shower. No problem – and of course there will be plenty of refreshments, fruits, baked goods, and local sweets served in the inish area.

Hamburg will again host a sports spectacle that attracts runners from over 80 nations. A large international ield of elite runners who push the limits beyond the 61-minute mark and many running crews have already marked their calendars when one of Germany’s biggest half marathons opens its doors again. The launch of the Green Running Race Alliance Five prominent road running organising bodies in Chinese Taipei have launched the Green Running Race Alliance with the support of the National Science and Technology Council and the assistance of National Tsing Hua University. The initiative is in response to the Government’s net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 policy and to effectively implement the plans for energy conservation and carbon reduction. The Green Running Race Alliance is supported by Taipei Marathon (Taipei City Government), New Taipei Wan Jin Shi Marathon (New Taipei City Government), The Rice Heaven Tianzhong Marathon (Changhua County Government and the Shukang Recreation Sports Association), Chinese Taipei Association of Ultrarunners and H2U Sports Note. These ive entities have decided to join forces to promote the environmental sustainability of road running events. National Tsing Hua University’s Center for Sports Business and Policy, led by its director Professor Huang Yu, is recognised for spearheading environmental sustainability in the sports industry. According to Professor Huang over the past few years various road running organisations have taken a leading role in promoting environmental sustainability in sports. The Chinese Taipei Association of Ultrarunners has dedicated nearly two years to establish carbon footprint regulations for running events. The road running community has been organising the annual Road Running Environmental Sustainability Forum since 2021. Meanwhile, events such as the Taipei Marathon, the Rice Heaven Tianzhong Marathon, the New Taipei Wan Jin Shi Marathon, and the Taiwania Ultra Trail Race have all successfully completed carbon footprint assessments. These efforts have

Pioneering environmental sustainability in the sports industry clearly showcased the commitment of the event organisers to various environmental concerns. Professor Huang Yu emphasised that environmental sustainability has become a core value for these events. In the current context of heightened attention to environmental issues, the advocacy of the Green Running Alliance can be considered as a natural progression. The initial stage of this alliance is to carry out joint marketing. The Alliance will promote the environmental sustainability of each event, encouraging runners to collectively support and recognise these efforts, even echoing a shift towards a sustainable lifestyle and the implementation of daily energy conservation and carbon reduction practices. The promotion of the Alliance’s initiatives will be done both domestically and internationally. Initiatives such as establishing standards for carbon footprint assessments and the execution of these assessments in road running events, as well as the efforts for energy conservation and carbon reduction, are considered cutting-edge in the global sports community. According to Professor Huang there are two signiicant reasons for this: Firstly, many event organisers understand the importance of sustainability and aim to expand the positive inluence of their events. Secondly, due to cooperation within the road running industry, manufacturers must comply with the international carbon regulations. In order to remain competitive they must provide low-carbon products and services. Even in the service industry it

is necessary to comply with domestic administrative regulations. This setup is advantageous for promoting environmental sustainability within the domestic road running industry. Despite the progress that has been made in recent years the Green Running Race Alliance must keep up with more advanced industries that have already achieved concrete results of their sustainability practices, such as green buildings, eco-friendly factories, and sustainable hotels. Therefore, another important task of the Alliance is to establish a set of criteria for an environmental sustainability certiication for road running events. This initiative has received support from the National Science and Technology Council. The members of the Alliance will lead by example in the process of organising the road running event. The irst environmental sustainability certiication standards in the sports industry will be implemented with the practice of energy eficiency and carbon reduction through the event organisation process. Professor Huang Yu notes that the level of enthusiasm for road running events has gradually returned to reach the popularity it had before the Covid-19 pandemic. Indicators include the rapid sell-outs of prominent road running entries. Previous road running events have highlighted the boost in economic activity driven by the crowd, known as the “sweat economy”. However, while economic growth must be pursued the signiicance of environmental sustainability cannot be overlooked. The environmental impact brought about by 500 running events per year is quite substantial. Therefore, Professor Huang is delighted to see that prominent race organisers are willing to take the lead in the environmental sustainability efforts. He believes that more events and runners will recognise this important idea and join the ranks of the environmental sustainability movement.

Lives remembered

Frank Baillie 1947–2023 by Peter McLean AIMS Publisher Frank Baillie passed away in his sleep at home on Sunday 19 November, one day before what would have been his 76th birthday. Frank became involved with AIMS in 1990 and served as publisher to the Association under AIMS Presidents Bob Dalgleish, Hiroaki Chosa and Paco Borao. Frank combined two of his greatest loves, running and publishing, when he became the publisher of Distance Running magazine. The magazine covered over 400 of the world’s major city races, spanning more than 120 countries and territories. Frank transformed the publication from a small black and white print magazine to full colour and on to become the world’s most widely distributed sports magazine. Frank was a keen runner with a personal best of 2:45. He competed in numerous marathons including Glasgow and London. He also published magazines for both events in the 1980s. Frank originated the AIMS Marathon Medal and T-shirt awards now staged at each AIMS Congress. Frank was one day watching the BBC Television programme ‘Antiques Roadshow’ when he spotted a rare physical relic of the 1908 London Olympic Marathon, the race that deined the Marathon distance as 26 miles 385 yards (42,195m). The 18-mile marker, a cast-iron ingerpost sign, surfaced from obscurity at a car boot sale in the north of England several years ago. The buyer, Graham Webster, knew what he had acquired and took it for valuation on the BBC programme where he expressed the feeling that the sign really belonged in a museum. On behalf of AIMS Frank Baillie approached Webster who agreed to sell the sign. This was at a time when the Covid pandemic made travel problematic. Even in 2022, with restrictions

lifted, the sign needed especially carefully couriered transportation due to the brittleness of the cast iron. Frank drove halfway across Europe to ensure the safe delivery of the sign to Berlin Marathon founder Horst Milde. The historic item now resides in the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running, later renamed the ‘Marathoneum’, in the Berlin Sports Museum, Germany – all thanks to Frank’s ingenuity, persistence and generosity. Frank was rightly proud of where he was from and where he reached in life. His dad Frank senior was a van driver and his mum Mary a waitress. The family lived in Govan, the port area of their home Scottish city of Glasgow. Frank often talked about growing up in an old tenement building in Govan where he shared a bed sleeping head-to-toe with his three brothers and three sisters. Frank loved lying and joined the air training corps from 1960 until 1965. He won a scholarship to become a pilot and then served in the RAF (Royal Air Force) as a Commanding Oficer. He later became a commercial pilot, Captain

Baillie was known and loved by everyone in Glasgow Airport, the waitresses, the cleaners, the crew and other pilots. When Frank retired as a pilot it had been 50 years since he irst walked into Glasgow Airport as a young cadet. From 1970 to 74, Frank joined Scottish & Universal Newspapers where he became the Personnel and Training Manager of Scotland’s most respected broadsheet newspaper The Glasgow Herald 1974–80. He became a Director of SUN which included one daily paper, 26 weekly papers and a number of sports magazines. Frank oversaw 200 staff. He gave many famous journalists their irst job in the media. From 1982–87 Frank was managing editor of famous publishers the Holmes McDougall Group, which he would later buy in a management buyout from parent company Lonrho plc for GBP 650,000, becoming owner and MD from 1987–93 where over ive years he would successfully sell various parts of the company for 8.3 million GBP. Frank loved to travel, loved skiing, and had an unquenchable thirst for history and learning. He was proud of studying for an MBA at Harvard University. Frank served as a non-executive director on many of Scotland’s hospital boards and was commended for his work in organising the celebration of the 50th year of the National Health Service in Scotland.
