Christoph Kopp

Coach and athlete manager

Christoph Kopp, Germany’s most influential and experienced road running official and manager, passed away at the age of 75 on Friday 28 April in his hometown of Berlin after a short illness. Kopp had a deserved reputation for his friendliness and reliability.

A former sprinter and decathlete, he worked as a coach and later became head of athletics at the renowned club SCC Berlin. When city marathons started up in the early 1980s in Europe Christoph Kopp became the voluntary Sporting Director of the Berlin-Marathon and the general manager. He developed the event to a high-class international race and established connections from which the Berlin Marathon still benefits today.

He was President of the Berlin Athletics Federation between 1999 and 2004 and deeply involved in Berlin’s bids for the World Championships, which the city duly staged in 2009.

As an elite field coordinator he developed the Berlin Marathon into one of the world’s leading races, and he did the same with the Frankfurt Marathon and the Berlin 25K race. Wilson Kipsang missed the world record by just four seconds in Frankfurt in 2011. Christoph Kopp organised the Berlin 25K race for several years. In 2010 he put together fields which produced

world records in both men’s and women’s races at the same event. Recently he also worked for marathons in Hannover, Linz and Munich as well as road races in Paderborn, Berlin, Würzburg and Dresden.

In 2020 Christoph Kopp and his International SportService (ISS) team organised the first elite races during the Corona Pandemic in Germany and one of the first worldwide. He was then involved in most other German races during the lockdown. Christoph Kopp always had the courage to try something that did not seem possible.

Christoph Kopp managed many of Germany’ top marathon and road runners through his team International SportService which will now be continued by his son Philipp Kopp and his long-term employee Sandra Wolter.

Samuel Kiplimo Kosgei

Kenyan long-distance runner Samuel Kiplimo Kosgei, winner of the Barcelona marathon in 2021, died on 26 May at the age of 37 as a result of a traffic accident in Kenya. The Kenyan Athletics Federation released a statement which read:

“We would like to join fellow Kenyans and the sports fraternity in mourning the passing of former 25km world record holder Sammy Kiplimo, who died following a road accident”

Kiplimo was a distance running specialist. He began to stand out in 2009 when he ran the Berlin half marathon in 59:36 and paced the

He was also the winner of Košice Peace Marathon 2015 with a time of 2:07:07 and In 2021 he won the Zurich Barcelona Marathon, setting a course record with 2:06:03 - his best time over the distance. In 2022 he again participated in Barcelona, finishing 12th with a time of 2:08:59. His last race was in the Daegu International Marathon on 2 April 2023 where he placed seventh in 2:08:39.

writes:

“This year is a special one for me. Not only because of the anniversary of the 15th edition of the Silesia Marathon, but also for personal reasons.

“In January I looked at the calendar. It turned out that I ran my first marathon 40 years ago. So I decided to celebrate this anniversary and run my own race for the first time. In 15 years of creating the marathon – actually, that’s 19 years of working on running events, because before that we created the half marathon – I had never run my own race. So I decided to end my ‘career’ of starting marathon runs at my event.

“There are probably many more people like me who have been continuously running marathon races for 40 years, but I think organisers who themselves run are not so common anymore. Only Fred Lebow, the creator of the New York City Marathon, comes to mind – but I am far from comparing myself to such a great historical figure.”

However, this momentum was paused following the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 event had to be postponed and instead the team decided to organize the first virtual run to ever take place in the Maltese Islands. This went down well with our athletes and since things did not improve in 2021 (COVID-wise), another virtual run was organized. In total around 1,000 athletes from more than 40 countries took place in both editions of these virtual runs. For this work during the COVID-19 pandemic, the group was nominated for the Niche Tourism Award during the Gozo Tourism Awards, which were held in January 2023. 5. For the entire family

The seasoned athlete will be catered for during the 42.195 km through Brussels but the programme also features the renewed Brussels Airport Half Marathon, a 10km and 5 km (walk) in addition to the marathon as well as a Kids Run in the Parc de Laeken. There is something for everyone.

The city has a distinct international character. It’s a character that suits people from Brussels. They love everything that is inter, multi, cosmo or diverse. It is in their genes. Nowhere else in Europe can you find a city with a higher percentage of people of foreign origin. They are proud of their cosmopolitan identity here.

Silesia Marathon, Poland

History and passion at the Silesian Stadium

Iconic finish line is just one attraction of southern Poland

Silesia Marathon, one of the most important running events in Poland, returns this year with even greater splendour. This exceptional event, which will take place for the 15th time in the picturesque region of Silesia, attracts approximately 6000 runners from dozens of countries each year.

There is one thing which makes Silesia Marathon truly unique – the legendary Silesian Stadium, the largest athletics stadium in this part of Europe, where every participant experiences an unforgettable Olympicstyle finish.

Located in southern Poland, not far from the city of Cracow, the marathon stands out thanks to one exceptional feature on its route. The Silesian Stadium, situated in Chorzow, is an important place for Polish and international sport. Since its opening in 1956 this multifunctional facility has witnessed countless events, including renowned athletic competitions.

One such will be the European Athletics Championships scheduled to take place here in 2028. On the track of the so-called “Witch’s Cauldron” runners in the Silesia Marathon cross the magical finish line supported by a crowd of spectators in the stands.

Silesia Marathon, Poland

In 2017, at the reopening of the stadium after renovation, a total of 100,000 spectators watched the Silesia Marathon from the stands.

The climactic finish is only a part of what Silesia Marathon has to offer. During the course of the race runners will pass through four cities in the Silesian region: Katowice, Chorzow, Myslowice, and Siemianowice. The race leads through picturesque streets, passing both modern architecture and historic buildings.

Participants can feel the pulse of the region, discovering its rich history and culture. In the early kilometres there is the legendary “Spodek” arena in Katowice. Just before the finish the race goes through the Silesian Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe, surpassing even New York City’s Central Park in terms of area.

Since the beginning in 2009 Bohdan Witwicki has been responsible for the route and the entire event. As a running enthusiast the race director has for many years been participating in marathons worldwide and draws inspiration that is then translated into new solutions in the Silesian race.

Upon arrival at the Silesia Marathon runners also have the opportunity to explore the beauty of its surroundings. Silesia is full of contrasts offering both natural beauty and valuable cultural heritage. In addition to the race itself, participants can visit unique places such as

the historic “Królowa Luiza” mine, the Silesian Museum or the beautiful district of Nikiszowiec. During a visit to Silesia one can also explore exceptional historical sites located in close proximity such as the Old Town in Krakow or the Auschwitz Museum. There are two airports within an hour’s drive of Katowice.

Participants have the opportunity to choose from three different race distances: marathon, half marathon and ultramarathon, which allows them to adapt the challenge to their abilities and fitness. The course record holder for the marathon is Andrzej Rogiewicz, who completed

the marathon with a time of 2:19:07.

Silesia Marathon is known for the beautiful race T-shirts included in the package and its reasonable prices. This year the package prices are approximately 44 EUR for the marathon, around 40 EUR for the half marathon and about 47 EUR for the ultramarathon. Silesia Marathon is not just a race; it is a true journey of discovery where sport, history and passion meet at the legendary Silesian Stadium.

Live the Egyptian dream in El-Shorouk

The Great Pharaohs Runners team wanted to create a sports event to memorialise the historical greatness of Egypt and to have a positive impact in the Egyptian community.

Ahmed El-Nady, a long-distance runner, established the event with the first edition of the Great Victory Run 10km in El-Shorouk City, Greater Cairo, held on 22 October 2022. It is planned as an annual event to be held in the same month every year and for years to come. The hope is for the event to showcase, over the coming years, the best in long distance running in Egypt and throughout the Arab world – and even extending to East Africa. The first edition attracted participants from Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Germany, Sudan, Bahrain and Palestine.

The course comprises one lap using the President El-Sadat Road, named for the Egyptian President during the 1970s who secured the return of Sinai to Egypt from Israel after the Yom Kippur War, launched on 6 October 1973. Sadat was assassinated eight years later, on 6 October 1981.

The running lap is lined with trees and green areas all the way, making it attractive for a preparation race for longer events like the Marathon and Half Marathon. There are four uphill sections and four downhills but these add to the interest and are not too taxing. The organisers are seeking to enter the race into the WA Label Road Race programme later this year and the Great Pharaohs Runners Company are now working towards offering a good running experience according to the rules to be observed.

Great Pharaohs Runners Team invite all mass and pro runners to run for peace and friendship between nations and to celebrate Egyptian Victory Day. They will all take home an amazing medal featuring the official AIMS logo and the Great Pyramids of Giza.

The race website will include a travel section giving advice to overseas runners on how to visit Egypt and live the Egyptian Dream.

We await you all on the start line to run for victory and peace in the land of wonders. But the story doesn’t end there: the Great Freedom Run, Egypt’s Fastest Half Marathon is on 29 December 2023 and the third Great Egyptian River Nile Marathon on 12 April 2024. Welcome to Egypt.

Marathon, the 42.2km Marathon Relay, the 21.1km Half Marathon, and a 10km Fun Run. In addition, a special short distance race for children and a race for individuals with special needs and impairments are also included in the programme.

One of the standout features of the Amman International Marathon is the opportunity for participants to walk and jog through the charming streets of Amman – including the downtown area which is closed off to cars for just this one day every year. The event culminates in an awards ceremony at the historic Roman Amphitheatre in downtown Amman, providing a truly unforgettable experience for all.

Run Jordan also organises competitive races of various distances, ranging from 5km and 10km runs to half-marathon and ultra-marathon events. These races are designed to promote leisure running in general and are accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

For young people long-distance races can be particularly beneficial, helping to instil the values of goal setting, self-discipline, preparation, resilience, and sportsmanship. The Amman International Marathon is an excellent opportunity for young people to develop these

values while participating in an activity they enjoy.

The Amman International Marathon not only promotes running, but also Jordan as a whole and its rich cultural heritage as a major tourism destination for international runners. The event has helped Jordan to establish itself as an international sporting destination by incentivising both Jordanian and international running champions to compete in the races and to improve their times and competitiveness.

Run Jordan’s investment in a dedicated timing system for the Amman International Marathon has improved the race experience for all runners by enabling participants to receive results instantly and with the utmost accuracy. Costs have been reduced by introducing the management of this system to a selected group of volunteers and race directors.

Amman International Marathon aims to use running events to promote causes that are relevant to wide segments of Jordanian society, including public health, social development, disability, and environmental protection. As part of its broader objectives Run Jordan will continue to

raise awareness, cash, and resources for these essential causes by organising the Amman International Marathon on an annual basis.

To raise the spirit of competitiveness, Run Jordan’s board of directors, under the guidance of HRH Prince Firas Bin Ra’ad, decided in 2022 to honour the first five finishers in Amman International Marathon instead of the first three. The organisation’s long-term partners, the Public Security Directorate and the Greater Amman Municipality, have been crucial in helping to organise and promote the events. It is worth noting that HRH Prince Firas Bin Ra’ad himself takes part in the Amman International Marathon.

With race numbers on the rise Run Jordan’s management is conscientious in measuring the race routes regularly to ensure that they meet the standards of World Athletics and AIMS. As Run Jordan continues to grow and promote racing culture in Jordan, it is sure to have a lasting impact on the sport and the country as a whole.

First run in 2005 the event triggered a distancerunning movement in the region that redefined the sporting culture in the capital and saw tens of thousands of amateurs embrace the sport. Women in India are also increasingly overcoming social prejudices to take up road running. The elite component attracts the world’s leading distance runners, but the open categories remain the heart and the soul of the race, with amateurs from across India and the world coming together. The race categories include the open half marathon, 10K, Senior Citizens Run,

Strengthening this philanthropic drive the title sponsor, Indian conglomerate Vedanta Limited, celebrated its association with a #RunForZeroHunger campaign. Every kilometre clocked translated to 200,000 nutritious meals for children. The event’s Associate Sponsor, IDFC FIRST Bank, also launched a charity-focused Runners’ Pledge that encouraged runners to perform to their best and contribute towards causes dear to them.

The Delhi weather is favourable in October and the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon is a great way to take in the sights and sounds of this Heritage city. With the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as the start and finish point, the route traverses Imperial Delhi and goes past many historic sites, notably India Gate, Kartavya Path, and Parliament House.

The AIMS-certified course is fast and flat. Amateur runners aim for personal bests on this world-class route. Top-notch facilities pre and post-race make for a complete race experience. Zinc from Vedanta’s oldest mines added the Midas touch to the finishers’ medal as a tribute to the runners’ mettle.

Race day this year falls on 15 October, at the start of the 10-day Hindu festival of Dussehra — the triumph of good over evil — which is celebrated with great fanfare. Delhi is a melting pot of cultures, food and festivals, and the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon is a great way to soak up the emotions and colours of the city. Over 26,000 amateurs joined the world’s best athletes last year. The national capital turned into a bright confluence of humanity as its major constituents, India Inc., the Government, and the citizens, merged as one in a celebration of joy and goodness.

“It was terrific to see the city come together to make the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon truly memorable. That’s the beauty of running; it can make an entire city, an entire community, move as one and run for various causes. I’m taking back some great memories!” said Ethiopian running great Haile Gebrselassie, who was the International Event Ambassador.

Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, Kenya

Since its first edition in 2003 the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has grown tremendously. Having attracted over 270,000 participants across its 18 editions, it is currently the largest singleday sporting event in Kenya.

In 2021 we launched a virtual marathon which attracted over 5800 virtual runners from 61 countries along with 2241 physical participants running along the Southern Bypass on a new route that allowed great views of the Nairobi National Park. All marathon proceeds go towards the FutureMakers Initiative. Our goal is to raise 50 million USD by 2023 to tackle inequality and promote economic inclusion for our younger generation.

We maintained the hybrid format for the 2022 marathon and hosted more than 20,000 virtual and physical runners. The 2-in-1 format marathon saw at least 18,000 participants run physically along the newly adopted route which passes alongside the Nairobi national park. Participants were hosted at a new venue, Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum. Despite the challenges faced during the COVID 19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the marathon was restored to its full capacity in 2022. The 19th edition of the marathon was very successful and at least 35 million Kenyan Shillings (255,000 EUR / 275,000 USD) was raised for the Futuremakers initiative.

In 2021 we started the journey of ensuring our marathon goes beyond a sporting event to become a platform for driving our sustainability and community engagement initiatives. At Standard Chartered, our aim is to minimise the negative impact of our events and drive positive change wherever we can. The sustainability practices contributed to more than 25,000 trees being planted in different parts of the country by the participating runners.

In line with our sustainability initiative we are committed to a create a marathon platform which delivers mass-participation sporting events that improve health, wellbeing and provide a sense of achievement to our participants.

In our upcoming editions we intend to champion for diversity and inclusion within the marathon. We will be partnering with Light for World, SightSavers and APDK to help train People with Disabilities prepare for the marathon.

To ensure a clean sport we collaborate closely with the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK). This complements the services of the race technical director, route marshals and CCTV cameras along the course. We also partner with key stakeholders such as Athletics Kenya, Nairobi County, Ministry of Sports, Kenya National Highways Authority and Kenya Urban Roads Authority to ensure the race is compliant.

With our Futuremakers initiative we are working with disadvantaged young people – especially girls and the visually impaired. Our goal is to raise 40 million Kenyan Shillings (269,000 EUR) in 2023 to tackle inequality and promote economic inclusion for our younger generation.

The FutureMakers Initiative builds on the success of our global Seeing is Believing (SiB) campaign to tackle avoidable blindness and visual impairment. Between 2003 and 2018 we reached more than 176 million people through SiB and raised more than USD100 million.

We are thrilled to announce the 20th edition and the 20th anniversary of our annual marathon event. For two decades we’ve been bringing together runners from all over the world for

a day of excitement, challenge, and community. We can’t wait to mark this milestone with our dedicated runners, volunteers and supporters. We have come a long way from our humble beginnings to become one of the premier races on the calendar. Get ready to run with us in this special edition on 29 October 2023 and make this year’s marathon memorable.

Longbien Marathon, Vietnam

A significant step forward

Vietnam’s most popular marathon is more than just a race

Longbien Marathon is the most popular marathon in Vietnam thanks to its fast courses and cutting-edge runner-centric technology.

Founded in 2016 Longbien was the first marathon to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, in over two decades. The event is located in Hanoi’s Long Bien district and features a flat course and relatively few turns. The race is held in late October, when the weather is dry and cool, and it has all the attributes to be the destination marathon of Vietnam.

Hanoi is Vietnam’s historical centre where you can enjoy the most traditional and authentic Pho (soup). There is a wide variety of street foods such as “Bun Cha Omaba,” which was named after President Obama dined at the restaurant with CNN’s Anthony Bourdain. You are sure to enjoy the hospitality, affordability and convenience. The country has free broadband almost everywhere you go, as well as 5G cellphone connections. Hanoi has four seasons, the best of which is autumn. The Longbien Marathon is held in early autumn, when the weather is dry and cool. It’s ideal for a marathon, providing beautiful autumnal scenes in light sunshine.

Because Vietnam is a developing country, the Longbien Marathon is more than just a race; it is also a significant step forward in mental health development and overall community wellness. “When the Longbien Marathon first began most Vietnamese people couldn’t imagine running a 5K,” said Mr. Duy Ha, CEO of Race Vietnam, the organiser of Longbien Marathon. “When we pitched the idea of organising a Marathon we were met with widespread skepticism of the idea that most people could easily run 5K. This is why we needed to bring a marathon to Hanoi: to demonstrate otherwise. We needed to show people that running 5K isn’t that difficult if you believe in yourself.”

Longbien Marathon 2023 marks the 7th anniversary of the race. With approximately 15,000 runners, of which 5000 are in the Marathon, Longbien Marathon is the largest race in Vietnam both in terms of overall size and specifically the number of Marathon participants. Such success belongs not only to the Longbien Marathon but also to the Vietnamese people in pushing societal wellness to new heights. This gives a developing country

like Vietnam more strength and courage to keep moving forward at a rapid pace.

Marathon participants will benefit from customizable technology developed specially for the race. Runners will be able to select their own BIB numbers and receive a personalized sharable e-postcard when they register. The race’s technology platform is runner-focused, and new features are added on a regular basis. Race medals and T-shirts feature the Long Bien Bridge, a historical icon of Vietnam that was built during the French colonial period.

By running the Longbien Marathon, you will experience the vibrant pace of life in Vietnam. It’s a unique sensation because an early Sunday morning with empty roads is a signature attraction of Hanoi. For hours on a Sunday morning you will feel as if all the roads are yours and that time will stand still until you finish your run. You will also have the opportunity to race in a relatively new Marathon country, where each race strives to differentiate itself and provide runners with unique features.

The Longbien Marathon is a great destination marathon in Vietnam, where runners can not only break personal records, but also witness a historical milestone in Vietnam’s rapid development.

Lago Maggiore Marathon - 33 KM - Half Marathon - 10 KM, Italy

Route with alpine backdrop combines natural beauty with sustainability

A lakeside panorama

Lago Maggiore Half Marathon was established in 2008 and the natural development for Sport PRO-MOTION ASD sport club was to complete the “Run Lago Maggiore” project with a marathon event.

This was duly realised in 2011 using a lakeside course starting from the southern part of the lake, Arona, and ending in the northern part in Verbania. Apart from the Marathon there are race distances of 33km, Half Marathon and 10km, all of them on lakeside roads. The Marathon and 33km race both start in Arona and finish in Verbania Pallanza; the Half Marathon starts in Arona and finishes in Stresa; and the 10km starts in Verbania Fondotoce and finishes in Verbania Pallanza.

The course

The course is promoted as the “most panoramic course in Italy” thanks to the lakeside route and the Alpine backdrop, with the lake surrounded by the mountain chains which stretch across Italy and Switzerland.

The marathon course passes by nine towns overlooking the lake; the half marathon part of the event ends in Stresa, facing across to the Borromean islands. The second half of the Marathon takes in the world renowned “Borromean Gulf” from Stresa to Verbania with an unforgettable view of the islands – recently chosen by fashion icon Louis Vuitton to present the 2024 collection.

Unique feature

Connections between all areas of the event are via panoramic boats that certainly add value to the race experience. Runners reach the start by a comfortable panoramic boat ride overlooking the Borromean Islands and surrounded by the Alps.

History

Lake Maggiore was often visited by well-known writers such as Ernest Hemingway, actors and fashion icons.

This destination represents the most beautiful jewel of Piedmont region in northern Italy, and it’s the second largest lake in Italy. Here you have a chance to enjoy the artistic landscapes that everyone should see at least once in a lifetime. Between the emerald green vegetation and the shining blue sky stand numerous castles, sumptuous palaces and prestigious Italian gardens. These monuments testify to the link between the two noble families which for years marked the history of the lake – the families Visconti and Borromeo.

We would recommend starting your tour from Stresa, located on the Piedmonte shore facing three amazing Borromeo Islands. From Stresa, you can take a boat tour to visit the islands: Island Bella with Palace Borromeo; Island Madre with its stunning vegetation; and Fishermen’s island hosting an authentic 15th century village.

To do

Before you dive into the panoramic course of this amazing race be sure not to miss the Borromean Islands, the Villa Taranto Botanical Gardens, close by lakes Mergozzo and Orta and a day in Milan, the city of fashion. The view of the marathon course from the “Alpinia Gardens” on the way to Mount Mottarone is absolutely worth it.

Sustainability

Since 2020 LMM has held the ISO 20121 certification for “Sustainable Events”.

From the first edition LMM followed many good practices to reduce the impact of the event on the environment.

Below are the three main areas of ambition for the development of the event:

• Economic: to create direct value for the local realities involved and indirect value for the promotion of the territory

• Social: to promote sport as a lifestyle and a tool for psychophysical well-being.

• Environmental: to monitor environmental impacts, reducing the negatives and optimising the positives.

French Riviera Marathon Nice-Cannes

Promenade des coureurs

Coastal course through five emblematic Riviera towns

A captivating marathon, surpassed in France in terms of participation only by the Paris Marathon, the French Riviera Marathon Nice-Cannes is about to celebrate its 15th anniversary.

The race is supported by the Department of Alpes-Maritimes, the cities of Nice and Cannes, running partner Kiprun and gold partner Caisse d’Epargne. The Côte d’Azur will welcome over 13,000 runners who will race from the famous Promenade des Anglais in Nice to the Croisette Boulevard in Cannes, a few metres from the steps of the legendary Palais des Festivals.

Since the first edition in 2008 participants have praised the breath-taking beauty of the course which passes through five emblematic French Riviera towns: Saint-Laurent-du-Var, Cagnes-surMer, Villeneuve-Loubet, Antibes Juan-les-Pins and Vallauris Golfe-Juan. Each of these towns brings its own feel to the coastal course and offers a unique backdrop that combines snow-

capped mountains and palm trees. Celebration, happy faces and fancy dress are also common threads to this event. This year runners have specifically been invited to wear something blue on race day – referencing the historic ‘blue line’ of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and the blue sky and sea of the French Riviera.

This 15th edition should be rich in sporting and emotional memories. Elite athletes will be present once again; music bands and DJs will be positioned along the 42195m route and at the start and finish lines to support the runners. For this new edition the French Riviera Marathon Nice-Cannes is proud to welcome the running brand Kiprun as official supplier for the next three years. They will provide all participants with the official tee-shirt and a backpack, in addition to the traditional finisher’s medal.

The French Riviera Marathon Nice-Cannes is a truly international event. Last year athletes

came from almost 70 different nations with 30% of the field from overseas. The course record of 2:07:25 was set in 2018 by Ethiopian athlete Abrha Milaw.

The French Riviera Marathon Nice-Cannes welcomes La Banque Alimentaire des AlpesMaritimes as a charity partner for this new edition and is proud to help in the struggle against poverty and food insecurity.

The French Riviera Marathon Nice-Cannes has been a member of AIMS for many years now and this gives international recognition regarding its quality and rigorous organisation. Last year the event linked up with the Abbott ‘World Marathon Majors’ group to give Nice-Cannes Marathon finishers aged 40 and more the opportunity to be part of the extended series and gain points in the global ranking.

Ever since the second edition of the event there has been a Marathon Relay open to companies and groups. The French Riviera Relay Marathon, sponsored by Caisse d’Epargne Côte d’Azur, is open to teams of three to six runners and has succeeded in attracting up to 400 teams in the best editions. Since 2013 pairs of runners have had the opportunity to run 2×21.1km (a half-marathon each). In the last few years the event has offered a 20km race option from Nice

to Villeneuve-Loubet.

Around 100,000 spectators will line the marathon course to cheer and support the 13,000 participants expected. Runners will set off at 08.00 on Sunday 5 November from the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Registrations via post are open until 30 October.

Mt. Fuji International Marathon, Japan

Come and enjoy the stunning view of Mount Fuji which you can only experience on this day and at this location.

The race offers all runners a superb view of Mt. Fuji and is hosted at Lake Kawaguchi, one of Japan’s leading resort areas. You can enjoy the view of the Mount Fuji World Heritage Site from various points along the course while running. There is a beautiful contrast between Lake Kawaguchi and the autumn leaves all around.

In 2012 the Kawaguchiko Nikkan Sports Marathon changed its name to the Mount Fuji International Marathon. It will be held in 2023 for the 38th time. The re-naming targeted a new goal of being “the world’s best resort entertainment marathon,” with outstanding scenery and entertainment and becoming an international tourist destination different from urban marathons. Runners are welcomed again this year with a course around Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Saiko, part of the World Heritage Site.

In the past the Mount Fuji International Marathon was known as “the world’s most beautiful course”. Taken together Mt. Fuji, Lake Kawaguchiko, and Lake Saiko offer a magnificent view, popular with overseas runners. Enjoy the majestic scenery to your heart’s content. Volunteers from Kawaguchiko turn out in the early morning support the event. Another pleasure of the race is to feel the warmth of the local people in addition to the beautiful scenery. The Mount Fuji marathon course is also assigned “Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park” to protect the natural environment and preserve the scenery.

Anyone over the age of 18 can enter the Mount Fuji International Marathon. Entry is on a firstcome, first-served basis but there are reserved entry slots for overseas runners.

The full Marathon and One Lap Lake Kawaguchi Race have self-standing finishers’ medals. In contrast the Charity Fun Run has a lovely

Malta International “Challenge” Marathon

Three days of challenge

The first Malta International Challenge Marathon took place in 1991, and for more than three decades it has been Malta’s only multi-day race.

It is a flagship event on the Maltese athletic calendar, attracting locals and foreigners alike. Spread over three consecutive days during the last weekend of November, runners cover an overall distance which measures exactly 42.195km.

This race has attracted well-known local athletes as well as multiple winner David Mansbridge from England. The introduction of relay teams in 2014 saw a new influx of runners who wanted to be part of the buzz this event generates but who do not necessarily have the ‘miles’ in their legs to undertake the whole distance.

In 2015 Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club took

over the race bringing years of experience in race organisation to this iconic event. The Club’s experience has been pivotal in making the event even more prominent in the marathon running world.

Over the years the race has welcomed over 5000 runners on the starting line, representing over 27 countries from across all continents. The Covid-19 pandemic forced the 2020 and 2021 editions to be postponed but there is now renewed optimism for the race to get back to its pre-pandemic dimensions.

The Malta International Challenge Marathon is held under the auspices of Athletics Malta, following World Athletics rules and is an AIMS certified race.

Over the three-day marathon the venues take runners to some of the most beautiful locations on the Island. The 10-mile stage on day one takes place in rural parts of south-west Malta, meandering through small unspoiled villages after hitting the picturesque cliffs leading to Zurrieq. The start and finish are in the main square of Siggiewi, a village full of character.

Day two is a 5km breather in the picturesque fishing village of Marsascala. The race route hugs the waterfront for most of the distance, starting and finishing in the shade of the local parish church next to an array of typical Maltese fishing boats.

The crunch in the Challenge comes in day three, an undulating 21.1km route starting and finishing in the tourist-oriented town of St Paul’s Bay. From the bustle of the resort’s hotels, bars and restaurants the race proceeds towards a spectacular rural stretch, including a one-kilometre ‘challenge’ hill half way through, to finish in the open spaces around the National Aquarium.

Further information on this unique event, including registration, is available on the Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club website www.bsj.mt. This year’s event will be held on Friday 24 November, Saturday 25 November and Sunday 26 November.

Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K, Jamaica

Come for the run –stay for the fun and sun

The lure of the seven-mile long white-sand beach in Negril, Jamaica, brings runners and walkers from an average of 35 countries annually to participate in the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K event.

The cool early morning breeze from the Caribbean Sea caresses the participants on the seaside course. Most participants can’t resist the desire to stay post-event, to immerse themselves in the local culture, sample the food and see the sights.

Many runners and walkers in the annual event secure their accommodations before leaving the island each year so they can return to the land of reggae and its friendly, welcoming people. Among the runners who have adopted Jamaica as their ‘home away from home’ is the group Reggae Runnerz of the USA, with 400 members participating in the past five years, having first entered in 2013.

They have adopted the students of the Green

Island School in the neighbouring parish and donated running shoes for some, in addition to assisting breast cancer survivors among other charitable acts. This is in keeping with the mandate of the event organisers, Jamdammers Running Club of Kingston, to give back to the community. The Club partners with the Heart Foundation of Jamaica, its featured charity, to raise funds and support efforts to raise awareness about heart disease and the need for

Jamaicans to practise a healthy lifestyle.

On 3 December 2023, Jamdammers Running Club of Kingston will host the 23rd edition of the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10k – but with a change. The Marathon race will be discontinued, but the Half Marathon and 10K events will be held on the usual flat and fast route. Marathoners wishing to join the event can participate virtually.

Launched in 2001 the event has seen 26,319 participants over the past 22 years, with the majority taking part in the half marathon and 10K races. Among the countries which have been represented in this island event are: Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, Trinidad, UK and USA.

Last year the Guinness World Records marathoner Shalisa ‘Lisa’ Davis ran, so did Wojchiech Magnik, who has run marathons in 129 countries; Thomas Godlewsky, 62 countries and Albert Meijer who chose Jamaica as the 50th country in which he would run a marathon.

“The 2023 event will continue to focus on runner care and enjoyment,” said race director Alfred ‘Frano’ Francis. There are aid stations at every mile along the race course, cooling stations with misters and iced towel wraps, and inspirational reggae music every mile to help to motivate the runners and walkers. Medical stations and fully equipped ambulances are positioned along the course.

Total prize money stands at over USD 10,000 (9,000 EUR). All participants receive commemorative finisher medals and certificates and an official Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K T shirt; The Bob Marley and Rita Marley trophies go to the male and female winners of the Reggae Half Marathon. Special prizes are given to high school boys and girls in the 10K and there are team awards for the half marathon and 10K.

Transgender participation and ‘fairness’

World Athletics ruling on women’s races

In March World Athletics agreed to update the eligibility regulations concerning the participation of transgender and “DSD” (Differences of Sex Development) athletes in the female category.

For DSD athletes the new regulations, applied from 31 March, will require them to lower their testosterone to below a specified limit for a minimum of 24 months to compete internationally in the female category in any event. This requirement was previously applied only to certain restricted events, these being from distances of 400m to one mile. The principle of restricted events has now been removed from the regulations.

Interim provisions will be introduced for athletes who are already competing in what were the unrestricted events (distances below 400m and above one mile, plus field events). These provisions include a requirement to suppress their testosterone levels for a minimum of six months before they are eligible to compete again.

The six months period is consistent with the previous regulations, which required six months of testosterone suppression before DSD athletes could compete in the restricted events. The interim provisions do not apply to the previously restricted events (400m to one mile) where two years of testosterone suppression will be required before the athlete is eligible to compete.

With regard to transgender athletes World Athletics has agreed to exclude male-to-female transgender athletes who have been through male puberty from female World Rankings competition.

Consultation with various stakeholders during the the first two months of this year revealed little support for the option first presented which required transgender athletes to supress their testosterone levels for 24 months to be eligible to compete internationally in the female category.

World Athletics has more than 10 years of research on the physical advantages that DSD athletes bring to the female category. In contrast there are currently no transgender athletes competing internationally in athletics and consequently no athletics-specific evidence of the impact these athletes would have on the fairness of female competition in athletics.

Boston Marathon: in it for the long run

The BAA Boston Marathon’s long-time sponsor, the John Hancock Insurance Company, ceased to sponsor the race following this year’s event.

Their place was taken by the Bank of America which becomes the presenting partner of the Boston Marathon and other BAA events from 2024, with an agreement lasting for the following 10 years.

Given these circumstances the Council decided to prioritise fairness and the integrity of female competition before inclusion.

The Council agreed to set up a Working Group for 12 months to further consider the issue of transgender inclusion.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said: “Decisions are always difficult when they involve conflicting needs and rights between different groups, but we continue to take the view that we must maintain fairness for female athletes above all other considerations.

The remit of the Working Group will be to consult specifically with transgender athletes to seek their views on competing in athletics; to review and/or commission additional research and to put forward recommendations to Council.

World Athletics understands competition as top-level international competition. In many of the world’s most competitive marathons the women’s elite race, with only a couple of dozen runners, is a different event to that in which ordinary runners take part. In the mass race results are given for the overall finish position but also separately listed for men’s and women’s categories. To enter the mass race as a female or as a male can depend simply on choosing what box to tick on the entry form.

That was how one runner in the London Marathon, held on 23 April, saw it. “I ticked female because I see myself as female,” said Glen Frank, who ran as Glenique Frank and stopped for a television interview on Tower Bridge.

Mara Yamauchi, a former elite marathon runner, saw the interview and was incensed. She noted that UK Athletics applied World Athletics’ rules on the exclusion of transgender women from elite female competition “internationally” in the interest of fairness. Why would it be any fairer for transgender women to compete in the women’s category of the mass race? Just because there is no money at stake does not mean that women would not feel cheated by finishing one place lower than they otherwise would have done.

Frank said she was shocked at the backlash, given that she was not an elite runner competing for prize money, but will now be entering races under ‘other’ or ‘male’ categories.

B.A.A. President and CEO Jack Fleming said, “We will work together to enhance one of the world’s great participatory sporting events. Bank of America will partner with us at every stage to grow, broaden and innovate new pathways in running.”

Kenya: concerns about doping

Until recently doping offenders’ reactions to returning a positive test tended to be passive, and relatively few tried to mount a defence once an offence had been detected.

That seems to have changed now, with two recent tampering cases involving Kenyan athletes. The similarities between these two cases have led a disciplinary tribunal to believe that there has been a systematic attempt to help athletes cover up their doping offences. They go so far as to describe this as amounting to “criminal conduct” involving “frauds on the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).”

The two cases are those of middle-distance runner Eglay Nafuna Nalyanya, who has been banned by the AIU for eight years and longdistance runner Betty Lempus, who received a five-year ban. The disciplinary tribunal noted that similar explanations and evidence were submitted by both athletes. This included falsified medical documents and the listing of fictitious doctors.

The tribunal concluded, “It seems that elite Kenyan athletes are being assisted by a person or persons, including someone with considerable medical knowledge, to commit what amounts to criminal conduct involving frauds on the AIU, and that this is not limited to a single case but evidences a pattern of behaviour. We regard this conduct as a matter of the greatest possible concern and urge the AIU to take all possible steps to establish how this is occurring.”

Reacting to this news, AIU Chair David Howman said: “It is clear doping in Kenya is increasingly well organised and these cases underline the reality that medicallyexperienced personnel are involved. This is a serious threat to our sport.”
