Ukraine There are moments in life where the word neutral loses its meaning. This is what is currently happening in Ukraine. It is impossible to remain neutral as by doing so we would contribute to accepting what is being done there. The facts are simple: a powerful country invades one of its neighbors, destroying everything around whether material or human, and shows the worst face of human nature that we all thought belonged to the past. There is no way to witness this and remain neutral.

This is why our Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) joins the unanimous movement condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the same time we acknowledge and admire the efforts of many Russian citizens who put their own lives in danger when trying to protest at the disastrous actions taken by their government.

Most people know the Hockenheimring as a famous motorsports venue but it is also perfect for running – guaranteeing fast times and a special atmosphere. The flat, 4.4km lap course is ideal to set new PBs. Runners pass by all F1 sites: the “Parabolika”, the “BernieEcclestone-curve” and the pit lane. An emotional finish is guaranteed on the Grand-Prixfinish line. Spectators can follow their runners several times and also get a great view from the famous grandstand. In 2021 race director Björn Steinmetz, who was CEO of IRONMAN Germany (2014–2018), put together a small, motivated and experienced team to realize the idea of running on a true “race course”: the Hockenheimring. After a successful first edition of the Ring Running Series in October 2021 it was important for the team to join AIMS and become part of the great community of international running events, to exchange experience and to connect with each other.

New members Great Freedom Run Egypt’s Fastest Half Marathon EGY

Khobar International Half Marathon KSA

The path for freedom in Egypt started with the uprising of 23 January 2011. To mark this date the Great Pharaohs Runners Team wanted to create something very special – this was how the Great Freedom Run Half Marathon came to life.

On 27 November last year the Khobar International Marathon became the first race in Saudi Arabia to host a mixed competition headed by an elite field. It was run on a certified course and attended by Prince Khalid bin Talal. Khobar is a city of 450,000 people on the Arabian Gulf coast just north of Bahrain.

The 21.1km Road Race will start and finish on Freedom Road in ElShorouk City, an outlying area of Cairo. The route is fast and flat with few turn points. There are trees and green areas on both sides making for a very pleasant race experience with enhanced oxygen levels. The race is held in December each year when the weather is favourable – so all conditions combine to help runners make unique performances in a unique road race.

20% of the 607 starters in the half marathon were women with equal prize money to be won in the men’s and women’s categories. The 18 elite men and seven elite women came from 11 countries. The race is one of the most important sports competitions in the region, where it enjoys the participation of athletes from all over the world. It incorporates many other events with pleasant aesthetic and entertainment dimensions. There is an 8km race (472 starters of which 37% were women), a family run of 3km and a special needs event over 3km. Khobar International Half Marathon is organised by the Green Line Events Company, and comes as an extension of the Kingdom’s hosting of international sports events.

Race founder Ahmed El-Nady and the whole race team invite all runners to run for peace and sporting honour in the first AIMS Member and WA Label Road Race in Egypt’s running history – Welcome To Egypt. www.egypt21k.com

40 years of AIMS

In a wave of enthusiasm A general article on the foundation and development of AIMS appeared in the previous edition of Distance Running (2022/1) and can be found online at https://aims-worldrunning.org/articles/1935-40-years-of-aims.html Below some of the people most closely involved in bringing the Association to life give their personal recollections of how they helped to make it happen.

When races started to be run on city streets everyone seemed to want a piece of the action Back in the late 1970s a new phenomenon was starting. Marathon running, previously the preserve of eccentrics and diehards, was rapidly gaining in popularity – particularly in the United States. Enthusiasts who had previously only experienced the ‘loneliness of the long-distance runner’ suddenly found kindred spirits in places they would only have ever thought of as somewhere to go on holiday. The American Bicentennial edition of the New York City Marathon started it. Instead of staying within the confines of Central Park the 2000 entrants took to the streets of all five boroughs with not only the permission but the active encouragement of the city authorities. The Marathon was suddenly something open to public view instead of being hidden away in quiet backroads. Along with a group of people who might already have been called ’tourist runners’ several key people already involved in running went to New

York to have a look at what was happening and more specifically to see if such a race could be staged in the major cities of their own countries. Anders Olsson decided that Sweden was ready and staged the first Stockholm Marathon in 1978. Barcelona held its first edition that year although it only moved into the centre of the city for the 1980 race. George Courmouzis had been living not so far from New York for almost 10 years and in 1979 was inspired by the explosion of popularity sparked by the New York City Marathon to buy the rights to the Marathon to Athens race. Jose Werneck had started a Marathon in Rio de Janeiro which was held in November 1980. He went to run the Honolulu Marathon the following year and found himself drawn into the discussions on the need for a worldwide marathon body to assure standards and make representations to governing bodies. Berlin had a marathon since 1974 but, similar

to New York, in the early years it was confined to the Grunewald forest on the western edge of the city. Now was the time to come out of the woods. Most notably the running journalist and entrepreneur Chris Brasher took a tour organised by his own company to the 1979 New York Marathon and was smitten. He resolved to organise a similar event in London – which was held only 17 months later. The organisers of these races regularly attended the New York Marathon and added others to their itinerary such that a circuit developed where they would meet casually. In both New York (then held in October) and Honolulu (held in December) more formal meetings were called and from 1980 those attending styled themselves the ‘International Marathon Race Directors’. This was the foundation stone of AIMS, but the structure of the new organisation was only formalised at the ‘Establishing’ Congress held in London on 6-7 May 1982 where articles of association were adopted and Founder members registered.

Anders Olsson, founder of the Stockholm Marathon and a founder member of AIMS, gives his personal account of the birth of AIMS as he remembers it 40 years later

As mentioned in the last edition of Distance Running there had been talk about founding an organisation for race organisers, but nothing happened until Fred Lebow invited all race directors visiting the 1981 New York City Marathon to a meeting. At that meeting a lot of issues were discussed, especially prize money and starting a ‘world series’. Nothing was decided, but we agreed to meet again at the next big marathon which was the Honolulu Marathon. We were a smaller group that met in Honolulu, and all of us were positive to the idea of a new organisation for race directors. We met again at the Boston Marathon the following year. As I remember it, it was in Boston that an organisation later known as AIMS was founded. In the official accounts AIMS was founded in London. I guess that the minutes from the London meeting record that it was there that the formal decision was taken. In the early years of AIMS the six persons you present with photos were very active, but I

remember two more; Serge Arsenault of the Montreal Marathon and George Courmouzis of Marathon to Athens. The two issues which dominated our discussions were prize money and a world series. Fred Lebow did not want any other marathon to challenge New York as the best marathon race when it came to top international runners. When we got Bill Rodgers – the biggest name during the early years of mass marathon running – to run in Stockholm in 1981 Fred was angry and told us that we had paid Rodgers far too much. But what Fred did not understand was that we needed just one big star runner and therefore we could afford to pay him well. Fred needed several big stars and could not afford to pay them as much as Rodgers got in Stockholm. AIMS never agreed on any rule for prize money. As for a world series including most AIMS races, that was too complicated and therefore did not happen. As you write, it took many years to found the World Marathon Majors, which is something different from what we talked about almost 40 years ago.

I was a board member for the first few years after AIMS was founded and I remember two important things we agreed on: 1) Course measurement. Before AIMS there was no clear international rule for course measurement – the IAAF did not have one. Today the AIMS rule is internationally accepted. 2) We also started an international yearbook about marathon running which later became Distance Running magazine.

40 years of AIMS Jose Werneck recalls his steps from Brazilian beaches to international marathons

3rd World Congress of AIMS held in Berlin in September 1985. Jose Werneck standing on the chair, Ted Paulin (centre), Chris Brasher (3rd from right) and Vince Regan (extreme right of picture).

My first memories of distance running go back to the 1950s in Rio de Janeiro when I used to go to Ipanema Beach and see an eccentric guy coming from the other end of the beach. He would turn and then run back, always right at the edge of the breakers – contouring them as the waves softly kissed the sand. When I was studying for admission to Law School I went to Copacabana Beach with a friend at the end of a hot summer’s day. We ran along the edge of the water. What I remember most was how refreshed I felt. Thus began an on-again, off-again interest in running, especially running along the Rio de Janeiro beaches. But it was not until many years later, when I was married and with two children, that I began to take running more seriously and started entering road races in Rio. In 1979 I entered my first Marathon, in Rio, organised by a company called Printer. I was 42 years old. I finished, totally exhausted, in 4:20. I threw up by the curb side and thought I was going to die. The following year I improved my time to 3:25. Great, but there was a problem: the course had been measured with a car odometer. I had already decided to start my own Marathon with a group of friends and the support of a newspaper called Jornal do Brasil. Our first race, measured with a TrueMeter measuring wheel, was in November 1980. It was won by two international stars of the time: Greg Meyer from the United States and Lorraine Möller from New Zealand. In 1981 we moved the Rio de Janeiro

The past presidents WILL CLoNEY was race director of the Boston Marathon from 1947–1982 and President of the Boston Athletic Association from 1964–1982. He became the first President of AIMS at the foundation of the Association in May 1982.

He attended Harvard University from 1933 and became Professor of English and Journalism at Boston’s Northeastern University from 1937–1953, spanning four years of military service in the Second World War. He was a sportswriter for the Boston Globe from 1930–1953 followed by three years with the Boston Post. In his 36 years as race director he guided the event during the popularisation of the Marathon in the 1960s through to the running boom of the late 1970s. In his first year in charge there were 184 runners; in his final year 7,647. He died on 16 January 2003 at the age of 91.

Marathon to the middle of the year (June/July) when temperatures were cooler in the Southern Hemisphere winter. In December of that year I went to the Honolulu Marathon, where I got to know Chris Brasher, Fred Lebow, Allan Steinfeld, Vince Regan, Horst Milde, Andy Galloway, Ted Paulin, George Courmouzis – among others – and realised that they shared the same goal that I had: to ensure that all over the world people would run a Marathon over a course that really was the intended 42,195m, and not something just approximating to it. Approximating – but always on the short side. I was running the Honolulu Marathon that year with my wife, Dawn Webb Werneck. The discussions with a group of race directors from all over the world were lively, focusing on how to measure courses accurately, how to set up doping controls to test runners and the relationship we should have with the athletics federations in our respective countries and the IAAF (as World Athletics was then known) internationally. It became obvious that the only way we could achieve our ‘aims’ was by founding our new association. Eureka! It should be called exactly that – AIMS: the Association of International Marathons. I was unable travel to London in May 1982 for the for the official foundation of AIMS but my wife Dawn was registered to run in the Marathon directed by Chris Brasher. She represented the Rio de Janeiro Marathon in the founding document of AIMS and for several years after that was an important part of our organisation, which also had people like Rodolfo Eichler (now a senior AIMS Course Measurer). My fellow race directors were kind enough to make me a Board member and, for some years, I took part in discussions concerning our statutes and activities. One of them that I remember well was arguing with Fred Lebow and Allan Steinfeld whether Mexico, for the purposes of AIMS, should be considered part of South America or North America. I argued for the latter but lost. My biggest reward for having embraced the running movement – something that was far from my mind when I watched that eccentric guy following the contour of the waves on Ipanema

Beach so many years ago – is that it gave not only me and my wife but my whole family a healthy life style. Today all of us, including my daughters and grandchildren, say a big THANK YOU to AIMS. The past presidents CHRIS BRASHER

discovered a love of the adventurous outdoors early in life. By the age of 22 he had participated in two Arctic expeditions. He was introduced to serious athletics at Cambridge University and quickly made an impression, competing in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics before famously helping to pace Roger Bannister to the first sub four-minute mile in 1954. In the 1956 Melbourne Olympics he was Britain’s third-string steeplechaser but, against all expectations except his own, he took the gold medal. A successful career in journalism and broadcasting followed. He was twice British Sportswriter of the Year. A business selling orienteering gear from the boots of cars led to the opening of the first ‘Sweat Shop’ retail outlet which went on to become a major UK sports chain. In 1979, with 10 fellow Ranelagh Harriers club members on a Sweat Shop tour to the New York City Marathon, Brasher was inspired to wonder whether London could organise a similar event. Only a man of Chris’s connections, vision and determination could have brought that dream to fruition a mere 18 months later. Many Ranelagh Harriers helped in small ways in that first event and continued to volunteer for decades to come. Chris, at the age of 52, ran a time of 2:56:56 in the inaugural London Marathon. Chris Brasher, who was AIMS President from 1983–1987, died of cancer on 28 February 2003 at the age of 74. Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

40 years of AIMS AIMS Founding Member George Courmouzis recalls the early days of AIMS

French crews of the Tour de France on motorcycle platforms to film the athletes’ efforts from all angles. We delivered! I was elected Vice president (Europe), along with Fred Lebow (Americas) and Hiroaki Chosa (Asia) at the inaugural meeting in London. At our next Congress in Tokyo I lost the vice presidency to Chosa by two votes. Marathon racing in Japan was very competitive, drew big crowds and attracted big global sponsors such as Tiger, Mizuno and Citizen. Race Directors were competing not only for crowds but also for top runners with potential to record best times and receive both appearance and prize money.

Race Director, “Marathon to Athens the Original Run” 1979–1984 Race Director, “IAAF Golden Marathon” 1982 AIMS Vice President under Chris Brasher 1982–85 I bought the exploitation rights to the original Marathon-to-Athens course in 1979 for an initial five years from the Greek Athletics Federation (SEGAS). I had just returned to Greece after five years of studies in the USA and nearly five years of professional endeavours in Canada, which included working with the Montreal ’76 Olympics. I had launched a Travel & Tourism agency in Athens and I was looking to capitalise on sports tourism which was all but a notion at the time. Marathon racing, as an organised personal athletic challenge on a mass scale, called for travel and hospitality services for the participants and their escorts. Accessing race entries was the trading currency among race organisers, who leveraged it with travel and hospitality packages, moving thousands of people around the global Marathon circuit. I had been a hurdler, a high jumper and a volleyball player in my youth. Jogging was not my thing. The meetings Chris Brasher held while jogging in the nearby park were a real challenge to me. I’d get out of breath and out of words. I had to force frequent breaks on park benches to put in my two cents worth. Nor did I understand why people would subject themselves to such a gruelling, potentially damaging trial. But I was happy to cater to their desires and profit from the integrated services of race, travel and hospitality I offered.

The past presidents BoB DAlGlEISh

had been involved in sport for many years before he became Sports Promotion Officer for the City of Glasgow in 1978. He was one of those responsible for setting up the Glasgow Marathon and continued as race director of the Great Scottish Run, the successor event to the Marathon. He was a member of the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF – now World Athletics). As President of the Scottish Amateur Athletic Association he was closely involved in staging the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. But Bob Dalgleish’s proudest moment was when he became President of AIMS. He took over from Chris Brasher in 1987 and the Association owes much to the innovation, expertise, time and honesty he gave as President. AIMS lost one of its finest with his untimely death on 22 October 1990, at the age of 54.

Mine was a small race at the time involving around 2000 runners, out of which not more than 200 were locals. There was no jogging or Marathon running culture in Greece at the time, so the entrants came for a pilgrimage from all over the world. These days the Athens [Authentic] Marathon hosts 30,000 runners in races from 5K to 42K, with Greeks as the majority of the field. But through owning the bragging rights of the Original course and the name by which every other race called itself, becoming a founding member was a natural fit. Our first gathering was hosted by Honolulu race Director and ex-policeman, David Benson in Hawaii in December of 1980, I believe on the day John Lennon was gunned down at his doorway in NYC. I had earlier witnessed Fred Lebow’s grandiose vision of the New York City Marathon. Race directors from the top Marathon races came to Honolulu: Boston, NYC, Montreal, London, Paris, Rotterdam, Rome, Melbourne, Wellington, Fukuoka. I was the youngest among them but held the race with the oldest history. That’s where the decision to launch AIMS was taken Chris Brasher hosted the inaugural meeting in London in 1982, organised perfectly by his assistant, the lovely Sue Richardson, who effectively became the first AIMS secretary. The founding members comprised the Who’s Who of global Marathon racing, quickly attracting the attention of the IAAF who didn’t want to see a runaway organisation managing a marquee athletic and Olympic event. We found a connection with the amiable John Holt, IAAF’s long serving Secretary General, and adopted whatever was common among the races, such as the accurate measurement of each course. The canny IAAF President, Primo Nebiolo, had dreamed up a series of Golden Athletic Events showcasing the top athletes in each discipline on live TV. He challenged its marketing agency, West Nally, and NBC to stage the Golden Marathon in Athens in March of 1982, with me as its race director and Citizen, the Japanese watch company, as its title sponsor. It was the first ever Marathon race that was transmitted live around the world, produced by Manolo Romero and broadcasted to the world by NBC. It took a long-range Chinook military helicopter overloaded with heavy cameras and a satellite transmitter to hover for more than 2 hours over the field of runners, plus the expert

The original Marathon-to Athens course was difficult and hilly. The Golden Marathon’s winning time was 2:11. A new socialist government was against commercialising Greek sport. My five-year term was not renewed and the Athens Marathon lived in a coma until the eve of the Athens 2004 Olympics, when it was revived by the Athletics Federation. It has since grown to what it deserves to be. As a result, Athens has become the seat of AIMS. As for me, my company became the dominant sports event and marketing company in Greece and the Balkans, culminating with a broad involvement with the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics. Now retired, I consider my years with AIMS to have established the course of my subsequent business achievements.

The past presidents hIroAkI ChoSA , as Vice President at the time of Bob Dalgleish’s death, assumed the Presidency of AIMS and was confirmed by in that position at the 7th World Congress of AIMS held in November 1991 in Bangkok. As the fourth President of AIMS he was to guide the Association for 20 years – twice as long as his three predecessors combined.

Born in 1930 Hiroaki Chosa was a successful middle-distance runner becoming Japanese national champion at 800m and 1500m in 1953. A year later he graduated from Tokyo University of Education, specialising in coaching methods. He became the manager for the Japanese athletics team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Hiroaki Chosa had been a member of the IAAF Cross Country and Road Running Commission since 1985. In that role, and as Vice President of the Japanese Association of Athletics Federations (from 1993), he played an important role in keeping AIMS and IAAF working towards shared goals. He also recruited several new Japanese sponsors which consolidated the Association’s financial position. He stepped down from the Presidency in November 2010.

Looking ahead | 12 June 2022 JCP Swansea Half Marathon, Great Britain

Alongside the beach and through the heart of the city

Running into summer In June Wales will host its biggest summer half marathon since 2019. Organisers anticipate a race-hungry field of runners returning to take part in the JCP Swansea Half Marathon. Since the inaugural event in 2014 this coastal half marathon has attracted runners from across the globe with competitive elite line-ups on what has become renowned as one of the flattest and most scenic courses in the UK. With a rising reputation as a must-do UK race the event has won several accolades over the years including Best Half Marathon at the UK Running Awards. On Sunday 12 June thousands of runners will gather at the start line in Swansea, near to the scenic Gower Peninsular. Starting at the beautiful historic Brangwyn Hall the course runs through the heart of the city and past major landmarks such as Wales’ oldest museum and the National Waterfront Museum. Runners will pass the newly-built Swansea Arena, the world-renowned St Helens rugby stadium, the Swansea Jack memorial and the Cenotaph as the course heads towards the picturesque coastal village of Mumbles. Those taking part will delight at the splendour of the famous Swansea Bay. The Bay has one of the highest tidal ranges anywhere in the world and offers views that stretch for miles out to the horizon. In the distance runners will be able to see Mumbles Head lighthouse and pier, home to the RNLI lifeboat rescue. The sleepy village of Mumbles comes alive with support for the runners as they head down to Knab Rock and back to the city along the promenade. This stretch of coastline provides an incredible backdrop towards the finish.

On return to the city the sight of Swansea’s tallest building dominates the landscape as participants enter the Maritime Quarter. Upon entering the city centre runners will see that, although there are now many modern buildings, during the industrial revolution this was once one of the busiest ports in the World. Just before runners reach the finishing straight they cross over Swansea’s striking Sail Bridge with stunning views of the Maritime Quarter. Runners finish outside Swansea’s oldest museum and several listed buildings including the former Swansea Harbour Trust building, now a boutique hotel that perfectly complements the city-to-sea running experience. This vibrant city has all the amenities you could hope for and is well-placed to welcome international visitors with dining and entertainment centres close to the finish. Notable finishers from previous editions include Team GB’s Dewi Griffiths and Tracy Barlow.

Matthew Clowes and Tracy Barlow are current course record holders with 1:04.43 and 1:13.50 respectively. The wheelchair record is held by Richie Powell in a time of 1:01.27. The ‘Swansea Half’ is the single biggest fundraising event in the city, supporting over 25 charities and good causes. With over GBP 2 million (2.6m USD) raised since the inaugural race the event contributes to the local community both socially and economically. Aside from the magnificent views the flat and fast course is a great reason for runners to take part and try to beat their personal best. The cityto-sea route is perfect for runners of all abilities, whether you’re a first-time half marathoner, an experienced club runner, or simply running for fun. ■ swanseahalfmarathon.co.uk Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

Looking ahead | 18 June 2022 Midnight Sun Marathon, Norway

The Arctic capital Run at the top of the world – an unforgettable Arctic experience

The very first Midnight Sun Marathon took place in 1990. It has since found a place on the bucket list of runners all over the world. The race has often been named as one of the best marathons in the world. Since it was started thousands and thousands of runners from far-flung places have enjoyed the midnight sun and the scenic course which passes through and around Tromsø’s vibrant city centre. An enthusiastic crowd cheers runners on – that crowd on occasion has even included the King and Queen of Norway. Although you run during late evening and at night there is always plenty of support. There is also the pleasure of running through pristine landscapes and raw Arctic nature under the midnight sun.

ners from more than 70 different countries took part. In that same year the event passed the milestone of 100,000 runners having completed the event since it began in 1990. Hardly any other marathon in the world has such a high percentage of foreign runners.

The usual way to travel to Tromsø is by air. Most international flights go via Oslo but it is also possible to travel by boat or bus. A large number of cruise ships call in at Tromsø every year. If you travel by sea, the Hurtigruten coastal route is very popular.

The Midnight Sun Marathon is also famous for its medals and sculptor Leonardo Lustig’s bronze statue “Runners” which welcomes people to the city centre. The statue is a famous Instagram spot. In 2019 the Marathon Flame, brought from Athens, visited the Midnight Sun Marathon, the most northerly place that it has ever been.

The Arctic is full of contrasts and, in addition to the Midnight Sun Marathon in June, you can try the ‘polar opposite’ experience of taking part in the Polar Night Marathon, a winter race held in early January. Tromsø is a perfect place to experience the Polar Night and the Northern Lights in the wintertime. During the polar night the sun doesn’t rise for two months but winter in Tromsø is not especially cold. The average temperature in January is –4ºC.

Tromsø is the Arctic capital, located at 69 degrees north, about 350km above the Arctic Circle. Most of the city is situated on an island surrounded by the sea and majestic mountains. It is the largest urban area in Northern Norway, and the third largest north of the Arctic Circle anywhere in the world. The Arctic light and nature in Northern Norway are filled with strong contrasts that provide intense experiences. For two months during summer the sun never goes below the horizon – and we enjoy the midnight sun.

We cannot guarantee the Northern Lights (to see them there must be clear skies), but Tromsø is one the best places to get to see them. And why not combine it with some dog sledding, or go whale watching or have a sauna? There are so many possibilities! So whether you choose the Midnight Sun Marathon or the Polar Night Marathon – or both – you will have the experience of a lifetime. Welcome! ■ www.msm.no

The race starts in the evening and finishes around midnight in the city centre. Apart from the marathon you can choose to do the half marathon, the 10km, the mini-marathon (4.2km) or the kids’ marathon (800m). There is a distance for everyone In 2021, 2310 runners participated in the race – a number that was restricted by the global pandemic. Looking ahead | 17 July 2022 Airlie Beach Marathon Festival, Australia Airlie Beach in North Queensland is the jumping off point to the 74 Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. You can travel from Airlie Beach by ferry, yacht, helicopter or sea plane to see the famous Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet or Heart Reef. Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands are covered by several well-maintained trails through National Parks’ rain forests. All of them are suitable for running or hiking with striking views over the islands. The Tassal Group Airlie Beach Marathon Festival provides a great opportunity to combine your love for running and nature by experiencing a pristine marine and fauna environment after an enjoyable marathon or half marathon. There are several events in the festival and they are all held on the same course, on footpaths and boardwalks, along the Airlie Beach foreshore. The route takes you through the Coral Sea and Port of Airlie Marinas with expansive views out to the Whitsunday Islands. The Tassal Group Airlie Beach Marathon Festival was first run in 2013 with a half marathon as the main race. In 2021, the eighth year, the festival was held in Covid-free North Queensland without any adverse effects.

Through the coral sea Marathon festival set in one of the world’s top tourist destinations

The festival takes place in July each year during Australia’s tropical winter. The weather at this time of the year, with mild, sunny days, is ideal for running and swimming (and snorkelling and diving). The marathon was introduced in 2017 and the first officially measured AIMS/World Athletics certified course was run in 2021. It’s a new race on the world calendar and provides you with a ‘boutique’ marathon experience running in a small field with 50 other runners. The marathon is run on a four-lap course and the other races are slowly added as the day progresses. Even though it is a small field there’s a lot of company along the route and the “marathon fairies” accompany anyone requiring some extra support. The Airlie Beach Foreshore Magic Mile is run along the beachfront on the Saturday afternoon. The marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km, 5km Corporate Challenge, 2km Primary School Challenge and 1km kids’ race all take place on the Sunday morning.

A record 500 entries were received in 2021: 50 in the marathon and 100 in the half marathon. Event records were set by both men’s and women’s winners in the marathon and the men’s winner in the half marathon. The male winner was Caleb Noble, an elite triathlon athlete from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland who broke the previous record by eight minutes with a time of 2:31:50. Local Whitsunday Running Club member Liv Compton won the women’s marathon in a time of 3:37:32, a 10-minute improvement in the course record.

race pack and a medal when they cross the finish line. Both items are themed to reflect the natural environment of the Whitsundays by depicting a local fauna or flora item. Previous vests and medals have depicted a Coral Trout (a local delicacy) and a Humpback Whale (they migrate to the area to calve each year between July and December). Professional photos of the runners are free to download from the event website after the event.

The half marathon was also won in record time by Airlie Beach runner Daniel McDonnell in 1:16:05. Townsville runner Liz Maguire won the half marathon for the third time in 1:37:41, having previously won in 2014 and 2015.

The Event Manager and President of the Whitsunday Running Club, Tim McQuoid-Mason said: “It is a great couple of days of racing in a unique boutique event with plenty of options to explore the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef afterwards.”

Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

Looking ahead | 7 August 2022 The Khmer Empire Marathon, Cambodia

Running in the ancient Empire capital Through rice fields and alongside temples

The Khmer Empire was the most powerful Empire in Southeast Asia from the 9th–13th centuries. The Angkor, as the central area of settlement of the Khmer Kingdom, was the symbol of the ancient civilisation of Khmer people and the largest pre-industrial urban centre in the world. The Khmer Empire Marathon offers an exceptional opportunity for all runners around the world to experience this course within a World Heritage site. There are 40 ancient temples along the smooth asphalt road which cuts through the national forest and rice fields of local villages in Siem Reap Province. The 6th Khmer Empire Marathon was staged on 4 August 2019 with more than 3500 runners from 49 countries. For the two years since then the worldwide Covid19 pandemic has impacted badly on lives in Cambodia. The organisers will re-start with the 7th Khmer Empire Marathon in the ancient city of Angkor on 7 August 2022 with expectations of the same number of runners as in the 6th edition. Participants will experience the ancient atmosphere and natural scenery as they pass along the road through forest, rice fields, traditional villages and ancient temples from the Angkor Era. There are several races to choose from: Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km Fun Run and family and kids’ 3km. All race categories start and finish in front of the Angkor Wat temple and are run on the short and long circuits of the Angkor temples complex. The Marathon starts at 04.30 when it is normally about 26C and heads towards the city centre before turning towards the ancient temples set in beautiful green forest. The Half Marathon starts at 05.30 with a small circuit of the Angkor complex during which runners pass through 13 ancient temples. The other races start 30 minutes later. Water stations are available every 2km.

Runners leave the Elephant Terrace and turn right along the road half-circling the Bayon temple - the most important temple built in the 13th Century by King Jayavarman VII and dedicated to Mahayana Buddhism in Cambodia. After this they go straight ahead for 3km before they reach the finish in front of the Angkor Wat temple. The race attracts few elite runners. The Cambodian Events Organising team, along with national and international organisations, would like to invite all professional and amateur runners from around the world come to participate this exceptional marathon. This is a way of showing ultimate friendship and kind support to disabled people and poor children in Cambodia. We are waiting to offer you the warmest welcome and the best arrangements for facing up to the new situation of health care and protection from Covid19. Come to this beautiful race and feel safe within the bounds of the ancient Khmer Civilisation. ■ www.cambodia-events.org

All runners in the Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km will pass by the vast area of Elephant Terrace. This is the 12th-century stadium with a 350m-long ornamental wall carved with elephants. This acted as a reviewing platform for King Jayavarman VII to look over his victorious returning army or watch ancient sporting competitions on the fields. Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

Looking ahead | 14 August 2022 CRDB Bank Marathon, Tanzania A Tanzanian event with a soul

CRDB Bank Marathon is a charity-led race organised by one of the leading banks in Tanzania. It started in 2020 and has since been staged successfully for two years in a row. In the first year there were 5000 participants. In 2021 the race was certified making it the second internationally-recognised race in the country. It takes place in Dar es Salaam, the national capital situated on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Runners experience beautiful scenery, flat terrain and an ocean breeze that makes the running even more enjoyable. The race is the premier event for both professional as well as social runners within the country and across the region. The CRDB Bank Marathon prides itself on its dedication to the cause of raising funds for various social needs in the country. With a tagline that translates as “The Race That Spreads a Smile”, we have been able to raise over USD 200,000 for supporting underprivileged children’s cardiac surgeries at the country’s only public Cardiac Institute. All funds raised go towards funding this charitable cause and many others, providing a lasting social impact. The 2021 CRDB Bank Marathon was registered with AIMS and had a 50% increase in participants while doubling the funds raised for charitable causes.

Spread the smile The CRDB Bank Marathon is currently a sell-out bucket list event for runners with around 6500 participants across all distances. The race has a growing international appeal and attracts runners with distances ranging from the marathon, through the half marathon and 10km race, to the popular 5km family fun run. We also offer a 65km cycling race through the suburbs of Dar es Salaam. The course takes runners through the vast Dar es Salaam peninsula – with breathtaking views. The routes pass both through areas of public beaches and past fancy touristic beach hotels. During the race (on the second Sunday of August each year) runners will experience stunning sunrises along the course. The race incorporates on-route entertainment portraying Tanzanian cultures and dances ranging from the famous Nilotic Maasai to the coastal Swahili. The race’s popularity arises from being not only a sporting spectacle but also a social event

which brings together families, friends, and business partners who get to hang out and enjoy the event after the race. Food, drinks and entertainment are shared as part of our rich Tanzanian way of celebration. A Tanzanian event with a soul: an African soul with a positive outlook towards athletes and the entire community by providing a wide range of social and sporting experiences. The race has been proud to attract leaders of the country to take part. In 2020 the race was graced by the then Vice President and current President of The United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The presence of a former President, current Prime Minister, and many other political and corporate leaders has made the race an exceptional event. Welcome to Tanzania on 14 August 2022 – come and spread the smile! ■ www.crdbbankmarathon.co.tz Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

Looking ahead | 3 September 2022 Petra Desert Marathon, Jordan

Run back in time ‘Looking down, I can see the entire desert that I was running through’

From my vantage point on the mountain ridge I see a never-ending landscape of soft sandstone mountains popping up from the desert sand. In the far distance Israel is visible through the heat haze of the Wadi Araba desert. Only five kilometres to the finish line. I’m longing to rest but I don’t want this incredible scenery to end. Earlier that morning, at 05.15, I had met 200 fellow runners from 25 different countries at the Petra Visitors Centre. It was dark, the crescent moon just visible on the horizon, and it felt a little chilly despite 22ºC showing on the hotel thermometer. A race official led us inside the UNESCO Heritage Site of Petra – a 2km walk including 1.2km through the narrow gorge called the Siq. As we exited the Siq I was amazed to see the landmark of Petra – the Treasury – reveal itself. The Start line banner was right in front of it – what a place to start a race.

As the race got underway my eyes fixated on the amazing surroundings: a settlement of caves to my left; facades more than 50m high to my right; the Amphitheatre carved right into the mountain; and the colonnaded street. These were just some of the attractions diverting my attention from my footing. After six kilometres, and a few tough hills, the route weaves into the desert. Although this part is flatter it does not allow faster running. Soft sand is replaced by gravel, which is replaced by loose rock, only to be replaced again with soft sand. This was no easy course but I was loving every single step of it. The views in the desert are incredible – the rising sun illuminates a kaleidoscope of red, brown and golden colours over the ever-changing mountains, giving the rock surface all sorts of fabulous shapes. At times I wondered whether I was running in the Jordanian desert or on Mars. The course was well-marked so I was never in doubt about the route. Instead I could really enjoy the scenery: the occasional Bedouin tent and passing herds of goats. Fourteen wellstocked water stations kept runners hydrated in the desert heat and each station was managed by super-friendly staff who asked how I was doing and cheered me on. I eventually found myself passing the 31km mark and with about a quarter of the course left I felt fine. But then I looked up… way up. I spotted a little blue umbrella on the mountainside – the next water station – and between me and that refreshing sight lay a twisting black paved road that became thinner and thinner as it wound its way up the mountain. I walked, stopped to catch my breath, walked again. With three kilometres uphill and no flat sections, no shade and a climb of 300m, I was suffering in

the sun’s blazing heat. Just as I was wondering why I had signed up for this race I reached the water station on top and realised why I had. Looking down I can see the entire desert that I was running through just a few hours ago. The following six kilometres on the mountain ridge offers amazing views of an unbelievably beautiful landscape – now I don’t ever want this race to end. Over the final downhill kilometres I can’t stop thinking that this marathon has gone all too fast – although my watch shows that five hours have passed. This has been by far my slowest and most challenging marathon but also the most beautiful and extraordinary. I hear the music and see the Bedouin tent marking the finish area. The speaker calls out my name in congratulations as I cross the finish line and receive my medal. I am exhausted, happy, thirsty – and I want to do it again. ■ www.petra-desert-marathon.com Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

Looking ahead | 17 September 2022 Ramboll Stockholm Half Marathon, Sweden Sweden’s premier half marathon through the centre of Stockholm

The starting shot At 15.30 on Saturday 17 September the starting shot will sound outside the Royal Palace in Stockholm for the 21st edition of Ramboll Stockholm Halvmarathon. Take this chance to experience the fantastic course and see districts such as Norrmalm, Södermalm, Kungsholmen and the Old Town come to life in a way you would never otherwise see. The half marathon is a popular distance: 21.098m is a real challenge but at the same time it’s a distance most people can manage with the right training. Marathongruppen has organised Stockholm Halvmarathon for many years and for the past four years the title sponsor Ramboll has been by their side. Ramboll Stockholm Halvmarathon offers participants a unique experience. After the royal start outside the castle the runners pass through tunnels and concrete, parks and greenery, and always with the sea as a constant just a stone’s throw away. The course shows Sweden’s capital at its very best – and most often with wonderful late summer weather. The experience for both runners and spectators are at the centre of the organisers’ concern. The amazing course will this year get extra attention. After having been restricted to two laps around

the Södermalm district last year, because of the corona pandemic, the race now goes back to the original course which runs through several districts in Stockholm’s inner city. The idea is that four selected districts will get a little extra love and light up in a way that you rarely see. Norrmalm, Södermalm, Kungsholmen and the Old Town will not only have their own ambassadors to represent them but also adopt a special theme that permeates the district. It can be in anything from decor, music, and food. If you are part of a large group of friends or a company and you want to do the Ramboll Stockholm Halvmarathon together then the Crew Challenge could be for you. Register together as a team (each team must consist of three people) and then it is your total time that

counts towards the result. Maybe the result matters less if you do it as a fun thing together? See it as a nice vacation in Stockholm together with your friends, family, or colleagues. Those who register for the Crew Challenge receive a SEK 50 discount on their registration fee. Take the opportunity to make Ramboll Stockholm Halvmarathon a shared experience, with joint physical activity and a lot of fun. For more information and to register go to the website or social media channels where you will get the latest information. Don’t miss out – get yourself to the starting line! ■ www.stockholmhalvmarathon.se Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

Looking ahead | 25 September 2022 International WACHAUmarathon, Austria Picturesque Danube marathon returns after two years

Go with the flow After a two-year break the WACHAUmarathon will be back! On 25 September the 23rd International WACHAUmarathon offers its unique course through terraced vineyards along the picturesque banks of the River Danube. Every September around 9000 runners converge in one of the most stunning natural and cultural landscapes of Europe to run the WACHAUmarathon. Located close to Vienna Wachau is an enchanting valley where the River Danube meanders past medieval villages nestling between terraced vineyards from which come wines of the highest quality. The region was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2000. The WACHAUmarathon takes place every autumn. It is a magnificent blend of culture, history, nature and joyful competition. The flat course, which descends slightly with the river, makes it favourable for runners of all levels.

The marathon starts in the village of Emmersdorf where runners get a view of the majestic baroque monastery of Stift Melk before passing through several charming villages. After 20km they pass the village of Spitz on the north bank of the Danube where the half-marathon starts. Together with the runners from the quarter-marathon (Achleiten) they all pass the pretty medieval town of Dürnstein. According to legend King Richard I of England (Richard Lionheart) was imprisoned there in the year 1192. Enthusiastic competitors rush off from the different start zones heading for Krems, the medieval capital of the region. Apart from the marathon and half-marathon a quarter-marathon and a nordic walking event are also offered. The full distance can also be run as a relay consisting of 2, 3 or 4 persons. Transport to the starting zones is all part of the race experience. The logistics are a huge challenge for the organisers because there is only one road – and that’s the one on which the races are held. But for participants it is a benefit. When signing up runners choose which kind of transport they prefer: boat, train or bus. Any choice provides them with a unique experience. They can sit back and enjoy the natural splendours of the scenery while the organisation gets them where they need to be. The Wachau region is approximately 80km west of Vienna and direct transport from Vienna is also offered. The first WACHAUmarathon took place in 1998. The present organiser of the race, three-time Olympic runner Michael Buchleitner, won the first edition before taking it over as organiser 10 years later. Since then he has constantly worked on improvements including big efforts towards sustainability.

The numbers of participants has stabilised at around 8000–9000, coming from about 50 different countries. Most come from neighbouring countries like Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia but there are usually some competitors who travel from much further away. The last race was held in 2019. Due to the Covid19 pandemic it had to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021. “Last year big spring races changed their dates to late summer so there was an over-supply of running events in September with clear disadvantages for smaller and medium-sized runs,“ explains race director Michael Buchleitner. “So this year we are more than ready to put all our energy into preparations for the 23rd International WACHAUmarathon.“ “The half-marathon is the mainstay of ordinary runners here in the Wachau,” says Buchleitner, “that’s why we like to draw attention to that distance.” To achieve top times Buchleitner recruits top international runners. In 2016, with perfect conditions, the Kenyan Peter Kirui was the first person to run under the hour in the half marathon (59:53). The 15-year old women’s record was broken in 2018 when Perendis Lekapana, also from Kenya, ran 1:09:21. ■ www.wachaumarathon.com Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

Putting the concept into ‘concept races’ Ofer Padan, owner and CEO of Marathon Israel, talks about branding races and inventing new concepts to attract runners, especially in times of uncertainty The two most challenging races in Israel are the country’s only Vertical Race, to the top of Mount Hermon, and the only Beaujolais Half Marathon held outside France – which ends at sunrise with a huge post-race rave at the foot of Masada, a UNESCO National Heritage Site. The man behind these events is Ofer Padan (61) who is always on the lookout for the next amazing running event to produce. The running world is full of races which begin at the start line and end at the finish. You come, you run, you get a medal, you go home. But then there are those special running events

which quicken your pulse months in advance: races which are a lot more than just clocking up kilometres. Marathon Israel, and owner-entrepreneur Ofer Padan, specialise in producing these spectaculars. Ofer is a passionate and inventive entrepreneur and race producer who lives and breathes running. For over 15 years he has constantly been dreaming up new concepts, tweaking and re-planning routes, and adding new races to an ever-growing list of what he calls “concept events”. “When I proposed holding a full marathon in

Tel Aviv in 2009 as part of the city’s centenary celebrations, people looked at me as if I was crazy,” says Padan. “Until then the city hosted infrequent 10km and half marathon races. I believed that a major metropolis such as Tel Aviv deserves a full marathon course. Nearly 1000 runners finished that year, and since then it has grown to become the largest running event in Israel.” Padan developed some of Israel’s most iconic races. Two years after the Tel Aviv triumph he partnered with the Municipality of Jerusalem to produce the Jerusalem Marathon. It has since become one of the most colourful and challenging road-races in the country, bringing together tens of thousands of runners from Israel and abroad. Ofer Padan set up Marathon Israel in 2007 as a creative production company focusing on providing runners with events that combine physical challenge, camaraderie and a fun-filled atmosphere. Some are designed as weekendlong happenings, with lectures and live music on the night before the race, to workshops, yoga and “after parties” following the race. When Ofer talks about running he gets animated. “I’m not a race director,” he says, “I’m an entrepreneur. I dream up new concepts for the benefit of runners. When people come to one of our events, I want to give them more value than they expected, a total experience and not just a race.” Most Israeli runners know him personally. He goes over each course before the race, is involved in all details, greets runners on the start line and cheers them across the finish line. “There are lots of partners in our success, and Marathon Israel would not be where it is today without the support of many good people,” he says. Marathon Israel now boasts 10 concept events – from the country’s highest peak in the north with the Hermon Vertical Challenge, to the tough Eilat Desert Marathon in the south which begins and ends on the shore of the Red Sea. Each event is unique, such as the “Crane Race” in the Hula Valley which runs alongside millions of birds migrating from Europe to Africa. Or the Bible Marathon which follows the route of one of the world’s first ‘marathon’ runners. Each event offers various courses, to make them attractive to wider audiences: from full and half marathons through 10km and 5km routes to 1–3km fun-runs for families and younger runners. Ofer is constantly planning new concept events to broaden Marathon Israel’s portfolio. One such, which has become an Israeli sensation, is the Beaujolais Half Marathon – a concept which was adopted from France in cooperation with the French Beaujolais Marathon. In Israel runners are encouraged to run in fancy dress. The Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

with races abroad to promote them as well. “Thanks to Israel’s moderate weather, our races are on the calendars of many international runners, mainly in the winter months where European runners can enjoy the exotic scenery while their home countries are cold and rainy,” says Padan. “There are runners who come back year after year. It’s a short flight, the weather is great, the food is amazing and the people are warm and inviting. It’s a win-win situation.”

course passes through vineyards and boutique wineries in the central region which offer excellent wines and an ongoing party atmosphere at the numerous refreshment stations along the way. Marathon Israel’s events attract hundreds of runners from Europe, and the company cooperates

Things were running smoothly – new races and concepts were in the works – and then everything came to a total standstill. “Covid-19 nearly killed us”, says Ofer. “We had lots of races planned but regulations changed daily and lockdowns and quarantines kept people at home. We were forced to cut back and even let employees go. At one point we closed our headquarters and moved our offices to my house. I did everything I could to keep Marathon Israel alive, and thank God we pulled through. During 2021 races were allowed again and we picked up where we left off and did what we know best – creating great running events for runners.”

One of the initiatives which helped to keep the company afloat even through the pandemic was a new concept of exclusive Runners’ Villages. Marathon Israel partnered with selected guesthouses and campsites across the country – many of them at kibbutzim – and turned them into unique locations which serve as a basecamp for runners, running groups and even bike riders who wish to train in a different area. The Runners’ Villages are outfitted with comfortable accommodations and all the facilities to offer guests a complete package – meals, multimedia equipment, a place for recreational activities and most important – easy access to some of the country’s most exciting trails. “Our Runners’ Village concept showed that being outdoors in the fresh air is something we all need and crave, and Covid won’t stop us,” says Padan. “Since most Israelis couldn’t fly anywhere for months, and both local and international races were cancelled, the Runners’ Villages became a unique alternative. Most weekends they were fully booked with limited groups, and people loved the idea. We now have eight locations across Israel.” Throughout the years Marathon Israel has kept close ties with AIMS. The exchange of information, knowledge and expertise has proven invaluable. “I believe that runners around the world all want the same things”, Ofer says. “Just as music and food connect people, running does too. It’s a simple global language and it removes barriers. Just a few years ago Israel signed the Abraham Peace Accords with the UAE and we immediately initiated cooperation with race organisers in Dubai. We were forced to cancel our delegation to the Dubai Half Marathon last year, but we’re looking forward to stand proudly on the start line with hundreds of Israeli runners in 2022.” Plans for Marathon Israel’s running events in 2022 are in full swing. “We have some surprises in the works, but we’re mainly looking forward to getting over this pandemic and back to normal. Besides keeping our business running and staying healthy, I think we all miss connecting with people and strengthening values and friendship through sporting challenges. These are the things I look forward to.” ■ www.desertrun.co.il Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

Sport science

Maria Polyzou, marathon runner, coach and cancer survivor, relates her experience on the occasion of World Cancer Day (4 February).

I needed to have 16 chemo and 32 radiation sessions after my breast cancer surgery in order to get my life back on track. As a coach and long distance runner there was no way I could remove exercise from my life, even after being hospitalized. Most people advised me not to tire myself out, and to lie in bed until my next chemotherapy session, but I wouldn’t listen. My body needed exercise. Just a day after my first chemo session I put on my trainers and went out for a run. I was curious to see how my performance would have been affected; would I feel exhausted and depleted afterwards? After a 10km run I felt no exhaustion; on the contrary, I felt much relief. The pain and the discomfort I felt in my body had been alleviated.

Maria Polyzou was the first female Greek runner to compete in an Olympic Marathon, in Atlanta (1996). She was the Greek champion for 20 consecutive years and still holds the Greek national Marathon record with a time of 2:33:40. In 2010, to celebrate 2500 years since the Battle of Marathon, Maria became the first woman in history to complete the ‘Pheidippides Feat’ by running the 520km from Athens to Sparta and back to Marathon over six days. She is the author of the “Spirit and Body: The Timeline of a Feat of 524 km” and has delivered dozens of lectures on the values of sport and of the Marathon. In 2010 Maria Polyzou announced her intention to run the 520km from Athens to Sparta and back to Marathon within six days, to mark the Battle of Marathon’s 2500th year anniversary. She set off from the Acropolis on 26 July and reached Sparta on 29 July, before running back to The Tomb of Marathon. This required her to run the equivalent of a double marathon every day for a week, with minimal rest.

Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

“It was a special year for the sport and I wanted to be a part of our history. The marathon is part of my soul. You can’t undertake something like that if you do not believe in the whole idea of the marathon” Polyzou stated. The marathon celebrates the run of the soldier Pheidippides from the battlefield near Marathon to Athens in 490 BC. Pheidippides was carrying the news of a Greek victory over the Persians and is said to have collapsed and died at the completion of his efforts. But the original legend, first recorded 600 years after the battle, was that the messenger first went to Sparta to ask for help but was rebuffed because the Spartans were in the middle of a religious festival. He then ran back to Marathon before going to Athens to announce the Greek victory following the successful efforts of 10,000 Athenian soldiers and 1,000 Plataeans who repelled King Darius’ invading Persian army.

Sport science Even the nausea was almost completely gone. The headache and haziness I felt had almost disappeared too. My mood and psychology were at a high. I felt amazing! That was how I handled this long period of chemotherapy. I have to say that the more active I was the less medication I needed to combat the pain and discomfort in the days following those chemo sessions. There were times when I even went for a short run just before treatments. I believe that exercise complements the therapy we get at the hospital. It is no surprise that in the USA exercise is prescribed for women who suffer from cancer. What will a woman gain from exercise when she is undergoing chemotherapy? The benefits are many: • Exercise helps a woman cope with the harsh repercussions that chemotherapy has on her body. • It deters muscle degeneration and increases endurance during our daily routine. • It maintains our body weight. • It helps the body detox very fast through perspiration. This is very important because our liver suffers greatly from all the severe medication we take. • Another benefit of exercise is that it improves our digestive system; our intestines work better. Let’s not forget that one of the most frequent issues caused by chemotherapy is constipation. • The endorphins which are produced in our body during a workout benefit the overall psychological state of a woman fighting against cancer; it strengthens her. She is in a better mood and has a feeling of wellbeing. It diminishes depression – something which is often detected in women who have cancer. • Exercise decreases bloating; we feel this discomfort because of bad blood circulation. This almost disappears. How much should I exercise? Every woman should first consult her doctor and then contact a personal trainer who will help her find the ideal type of exercise. Every woman is a unique case and she alone knows her physical endurance.

We should never feel overexerted after a workout, but rejuvenated. A workout could be a 30–40 minute run/ walk or just a dynamic walk, cycling or a swim. Everything benefits us as long as the body is in motion. I would recommend you exercise close to nature. There are many benefits.. I personally didn’t mind driving a few kilometres so that I could go for a run or a walk by the sea, on a mountain or in a lush green forest. You will feel the benefits double! The fresh air and oxygen we get does us good and rejuvenates us. Exercise helps to clear the familiar haziness that our brain suffers due to all the medication. After any workout, a good session of stretching for the whole body is ideal. It is of the utmost importance not to neglect to do strengthening exercises; your body needs them. Women who have undergone lymphatic cleansing, like I have (I had 27 removed), should

take extra caution; we need to be patient and persistent. Exercises should be mild. Our aim is to regain the ability to stretch out our arms. We should stretch our muscles without hurting ourselves or causing any pain. This is to be repeated persistently until it is accomplished. We do not want to feel pain in this area. What we need to feel is a slight pull which soothes us. The rehabilitation of the muscles in the armpit may take a while but rest assured they will heal. These exercises deal with the improvement of the complete movement of the shoulder, elbow, arms and wrist. A rubber ball, which is squeezed and released repeatedly, is used to exercise the muscles in the hands and fingers. How many times should I exercise in a week? This depends on each woman. Personally, I exercised every single day because it did me good. I would suggest 3–4 times a week. On the days when you don’t work out you could do any other mild activity in the house, the garden or even dance. One thing is certain though… You don’t give up.

Lives remembered

John Velzian Kenya’s first national athletics coach

offered a position in Kenya. After independence in 1963 he was one of the few expatriates asked to stay on and was tasked with developing the nation’s athletics talent, particularly in long distance running. It was around then that he began working with athletes such as Kip Keino, who would go on to win Olympic titles at the 1968 and 1972 Games.

John Velzian, who had lived in Kenya since 1958, died in the early hours of 20 January while undergoing treatment at the MP Shah Hospital, Nairobi. He had led Kenya to their first ever Africa Senior Athletics Championships in 1965. Velzian, who was a few weeks shy of his 94th birthday, was awarded with World Athletics Coaching Lifetime Achievement Award in November 2011, three months after receiving World Athletics (Formerly IAAF) Honorary Plaque. African Athletics Development Centre (AADC) secretary Elizabeth Anono, who confirmed his death, said that Velzian was found unconscious at his home on Wednesday morning and rushed to hospital. On Thursday morning doctors confirmed that he had passed on. Anono celebrated Velzian, a former director at AADC, as the father of athletics in the country: “In our lives, there have been few people as special as John Velzian. He was someone that we felt deeply connected to and even though he is gone we feel his presence throughout our region,” she said.

“I first met him in 1962 when he was coaching in Nyeri,” Keino told AFP. “He was very thorough in his coaching under the old British system and helped me to become the top athlete in the world.” Anono said Velzian, as long-time head of the World Athletics Regional Development Centre in Nairobi, was passionate in ensuring the development of athletics in English-speaking member countries. He was instrumental in bringing the IAAF World Cross Country Championships to Mombasa in 2007 and had served as race director for the Nairobi Marathon. Apart from coaching Velzian was an experienced international technical official having served at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and World Cup. He was also a World Athletics lecturer in officiating and an AIMS road race course measurer. After graduating in the United Kingdom Velzian was employed as a physical education officer first in Pakistan and then in Cyprus before being

Velzian was instrumental in initiating athletics training in Kenyan schools. He helped to convince the Kenyan army and police force to support athletes with competitions and jobs. He also played a crucial role developing Kenyan talent in the steeplechase. At a time when facilities in the country were extremely basic Velzian built ‘one-lane’ steeplechase barriers for athletes to use as a training aid. Within a matter of years Kenyan athletes began to dominate the event. Throughout his time in Kenya Velzian used athletics to raise funds for worthy causes, especially those concerned with the health and welfare of children. He devoted his life to athletics and established national athletics standards for school children in Kenya. ■ From The Nation newspaper, Nairobi with additional material from World Athletics

John Landy John Landy, the second man in history to break four minutes for the mile, died on 24 February at the age of 91. Six weeks after Roger Bannister had run 3:59.4, to become the first man to run the mile in under four minutes, John Landy improved Bannister’s world record to 3:58.0. For the previous two years both men had been concentrating on running a sub-four-minute mile after disappointing performances at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. Landy leapt ahead to lead the chase, improving his personal best by a full eight seconds to 4:02.1. In Helsinki he had been influenced by the example of Emil Zátopek who had won all the long-distance events with an impressively hard training regime. Landy’s breakthrough brought the prospect of a sub-four-minute mile centre stage, with Bannister and the American runner Wes Santee his main rivals. While Landy and Santee concentrated singlemindedly on upping their training Bannister 48

Distance Running | 2022 Edition 2

sought help from renowned coach Franz Stampfl and from his training partners Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher as pacemakers. An illegally-paced effort in 1953 yielded a time of 4:02.0 but by the start of the 1954 season, as Landy looked for races to sharpen his form, Bannister was ready to launch his effort. The pacing was crucial to Bannister’s successful attempt – and this time within the rules. With Landy slicing 1.4 seconds from Bannister’s barrier-breaking record the clash between the pair at the 1954 Empire Games in Vancouver was eagerly anticipated. Bannister had the fearsome finish and Landy was a committed front-runner. True to form, Landy’s relentless effort opened up a gap by halfway but Bannister closed down on him before outsprinting him in the home straight to record his fastest-ever time of 3:58.8.

After a break from running in 1955 Landy returned early in 1956 to record two more subfour-minute miles as well as set national records in the 880 yards and three miles. In May he was approached by the Government of Victoria to make a US tour in order to counter negative impressions of the Melbourne Olympics. Landy’s schedule was punishing yet he twice ran sub-four-minute miles at a time when only five men had beaten the mark. But he also sustained a tendon injury which limited his training on return to Australia. He was the face of the 1956 Games in Melbourne but was struggling to regain fitness and confidence. After lagging behind the leaders in the final of the 1500m he came alive on the last lap but ran out of ground, finishing with the bronze medal. In later life Landy’s sense of civic duty led him into becoming Governor of Victoria from 2001–2006. In the Queen’s Baton Relay at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games he received the baton on the final stage and delivered it to Queen Elizabeth II.
