AIMS News
A changed landscape Over the last three months the race calendar has been comprehensively blown apart. As organisers at first optimistically postponed their races – and often later had to cancel them – the racing landscape changed beyond recognition.
Halfmarathon Altötting (GER) and St Petersburg Half Marathon (RUS, below) both went ahead with precautions in place
Events that started up again were small experimental affairs having to do things completely at odds with normal practice: drastically reduce the number of participants and actively avoid attracting spectators. Some of the handful of races which looked like they might be going ahead, Da Nang Marathon in Vietnam and Reykjavik Marathon in Iceland were both cancelled at very short notice when there was a sudden upturn in coronavirus cases after several weeks or even months of remission. Swiss City Marathon Lucerne cancelled their flagship event but instituted a series of 10 “Yes We Run” socially-distanced races with fields of 250 runners. Altotting Half Marathon (see feature pp??) set their limit at 500 runners and ran two races, one following the other, with strict hygiene protocols in place. Japanese races were cancelling further in advance than elsewhere – up to six months ahead of the race date. Other races that far ahead in the calendar sometimes felt obliged to re-state their intention to stick to the published date – even though there could never be any guarantees of being able to do so. But in September there were a few races where numbers were not quite so severely diminished. Budapest Half Marathon went ahead with anticovid measures in place and had 4400 finishers. The expected relaxation of limits to the number of people allowed to participate in outdoor events did not take place. Many races in countries with low infection rates, like Germany and Denmark, were prevented from putting on events because of this blanket ban. The promised exceptions for events where a workable ‘hygiene plan’ could be put in place, as was announced for Hamburg, were compromised by the
local authorities’ insistence that the impact of spectators attracted to the race also had to be included. As European countries eased restrictions on everyday activity – especially activity with an economic impact – infection rates went up and led to counter-measures which again depressed the chances of limits being eased for running events irrespective of the anti-covid precautions to be put in place.
For the latest news, results, dates – visit
Without any big races going ahead there was no evidence of what impact they would have but often it was the worst possible case that was imagined. So Tokyo considered moving their date to October in case fallout from a mass marathon held in March impacted on the chances of the (postponed) Olympics being held there in July/August. Progress has been made towards a ‘return to racing’ but it has been
slow and uncertain – always subject to backward steps. Because of quarantine restrictions many races are in practical terms only open to residents of the country in which it is held. Races held in the last few weeks and those that are still expected to take place in the coming weeks are listed opposite with some of the restrictions applied also noted.

A good runner is not only the fastest but also the quickest to adapt. Someone who, when told not to go out, runs at home. Who, when finally let out, even if it is just for one kilometre, runs back and forward along that only kilometre. Who when asked to run wearing a mask, runs wearing a mask. Because the only thing you cannot ask a runner to do is stop running. Keep running. Valencia will be waiting for you.

Looking ahead | 8 November 2020 Athens Marathon The Authentic, Greece
Honouring and protecting The Authentic Marathon tried valiantly to keep its place on the road – even in the COVID-19 era. Although cancelled just six weeks before the race the work done in preparation was not wasted. It helped to define the approach that will be needed before races can find their place on the road again Greece took strict measures quite early on to safeguard against the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. By doing so the registered number of infections in the country has been kept low compared to the rest of Europe, allowing Greece to remain active in various aspects of social, cultural, touristic and sporting life. Within this framework the 2020 Athens Marathon was planning to welcome thousands of runners – both local and international. They were to honour history by being part of the reopening of running events in Europe. Organisers wanted to present a major international running event focused on the runner and providing all possible care to make sure that safety and the protection of public health remained the top priority in all cases. With this ambition in mind the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS), rights holder and organiser of the annual Authentic Marathon, drew up a manual of rules and regulations to ensure that the health of participants, staff, paramedics and volunteers would be protected throughout the event. The Greek State had already approved the Manual of Rules and Regulations that would govern the event and specify all health measures and procedures that would be followed during, before and after it took place. Social distancing and contactless procedures were to allow all participants to enjoy the actual race without concerns regarding health safety. The core of this Manual suggests how to allow for the participation of 12,000 Marathon runners, all allocated in blocks of 500 runners each, who would cross the start line in lines of eight. Start waves with time differences would be applied to all starting blocks and lines. Services at the feed zones on the course and the Distance Running | 2020 Edition 4

Finish would be provided in a contactless way. There would be no EXPO held this year: runners would collect their race kit from the event’s Registration Centre, the opening hours and days of which would be extended in order to avoid crowding. The Athens Marathon organisers were very confident of the protocol that had been developed. It is concrete, health and safety-oriented and covers every detail of such an important event as the Athens Marathon. The “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” is not just another international Marathon event, but countries, making the Athens Marathon one of the most international and welcoming marathon events around the world. The organisers are committed to providing each and every one of the participants with a personalised running experience of a lifetime. To achieve this the registration and kit includes services to maximise the feeling of the event. Personal photos, unique merchandising products, personalised information and guidance through the event’s app, an exclusive official Athens Marathon t-shirt and most of all – a medal with artistic value that bears all the historic and social significance of the Marathon Movement. In 2019 the Hellenic Athletics Federation decided to depict the history of the sport on the medals of the Athens Marathon, launching a series of medals that will be completed in a period of eight years on which a different historic milestone of the Marathon’s long history is presented each year. Famous artists have already committed to portray the best moments of the sport. The first medal of this unique series depicted the “490BC Battle of Marathon” portrayed by the famous Greek painter, Alekos Fassianos. In 2020 the second medal will recognise Pheidippides, the legendary “RunnerMessenger”, modelled by the famous Greek sculptor, Kostas Varotsos. a bridge from legend to history that showcases the strength of human will. It is a source of values, of social responsibility, environmental sensitivity, friendship and solidarity. Since 1983 the Marathon has been dedicated to the memory of the great Greek pacifist Grigoris Labrakis and has the unique privilege of following the footsteps of the legendary Athenian soldier and the original route of the first Modern Olympic Games Marathon in 1896.
Activities are extended over five days and hosted in significant landmark venues of Greek history and culture. These include the historic Marathon Start, the Marathon Tomb, the Zappeion Megaron and the Panathenaic Stadium. It consists of races at all distances; Marathon, 10km, 5km and 3km, Kids Runs and runs for individual with disabilities and Special Olympics’ athletes. More than 60,000 runners participated in the 2019 edition, while half of those who ran the Marathon came from more than 130 other

Up-and-coming running hotspot hosts German championships

The anniversary had to be postponed – now the anticipation is even greater for a big reunion of the national and international running community in Hannover at the city’s biggest street party. Participants from over 100 countries took part in 2019 in front of the picturesque city hall of the capital of Lower Saxony.
and much more are found near to the start and finish area. Hotels of all categories are located very close by.
Besides the marathon distance runners can choose between half marathon, 10km or the marathon-relay. There is also a handbike marathon as well as 10km walking and nordic walking. The running festival is rounded off with the children’s and family day including the Breakfast-run, FunRun, KidsRun and a colourful supporting programme around the town hall on 17 April 2021.
With just 20m change of altitude, the HAJ Marathon is one of the flattest and fastest routes in Germany – ideal for personal bests and ideal for hosting the national championships, where runners can also qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The diverse route leads past a number of the sights of the city such as the Welfenschloss, the Opera House, the Maschlake and the sculpture mile with the world-famous “Nanas”.
The HAJ Hannover Marathon holds both a silver label from World Athletics and the “five-star classification” by the European Athletics Association.
“To host the championships is a great honour and a confirmation of the development of the event in recent years,” declared organiser Stefanie Eichel. “We won the organisers’ award from German Road Races (GRR) in 2017 and see this as an obligation to further develop the image and quality of our marathon.”
Everything to do with the race is close at hand. The Marathon EXPO, live music, pasta party, numbers pick-up, bag drop, business village
In recent years Hannover has evolved into one of the absolute running hotspots of Germany. The number of participants steadily increased to
surpass 30,000 for all competitions before the 2020 edition, like all other major events, had to be cancelled. A large number of activity points along the course, enthusiastic spectators and a highly charged emotional atmosphere ensure runners’ motivation. Sustainability and environmental awareness are constant themes. Eichel mentions the separate onsite waste-separation station, digital services, reusable finisher bags and QR codes on the start numbers. “We have initiated many actions and every year try to set new targets. Through the marathon we want to raise the awareness of our participants all year round – and also among the spectators.” Hannover is very easily accessible by plane, train or car. The former EXPO metropolis can easily be reached by all means of transport and from all over the world. With highlights such as the “Herrenhausen Gardens”, the picturesque Maschlake in the centre of the city, or the “Adventure Zoo” – Hannover is always worth a trip. Our aim is to offer a running experience for every level of running ability. This means there are races at several different distances other than the Marathon itself, like the 10km City Run or the team run. For the team run the marathon is split into four stages as a 4-person relay to offer runners the chance of experiencing the event alongside their colleagues, friends or family. There are approximately 3500 marathon runners, 3500 City 10km runners and 4000 team runners who end up storming through the streets of Switzerland’s biggest city. For the 2021 Zurich Marathon we are looking forward to making a few innovations. It will be the first time that the Zurich Marathon will incorporate the Swiss Marathon Championships. The location of the new valuables deposit concept will be in the Mythenquai car park. Moreover, the start will be organised in blocks to provide a smoother start for every runner. The Finish Area tent will be a special highlight where the winners’ ceremony will take place and the integrated food festival will be held with various culinary offers after the finish line. We look forward to an unforgettable 2021 marathon. Those who are not yet registered can still do so – because we all #RunTheCity

A half marathon with a rich history, in a city with even more heritage
Take it to the bridge The first Lisbon Half Marathon in 1991 had 3973 finishers. Thirty years later the number of participants is almost 20,000, half of them foreign runners. The flat course along the banks of the Tagus makes the race one of the fastest half marathons in the world and also takes runners on a tour of the city’s best sights and views. The race offers participants the unique opportunity to run on the emblematic 25 de Abril Bridge. The course follows the riverside road towards Alcântara passing by the famously busy street of Avenida 24 de Julho. The race goes by one of Lisbon’s oldest and busiest railway stations, Cais de Sodré.. After that athletes make the turn and and run back towards the finish line at Belem, right in front of one of the most famous landmarks in the country, the Jerónimos Monastery. For dedicated runners the race offers the opportunity of a new personal best time. For casual participants it affords the chance to run in a joyful environment with the guarantee of breathtaking views. Runners come from 90
nations and the event has an economic impact of more than four million euro (4.7m USD) for the city. The race is broadcast live to more than 200 million people all over the world. Since the second edition a fun run has taken place simultaneously. This year it was intended to make it into a timed 10km race but because of COVID-19 this new “Vodafone 10K” and the main 30th anniversary competition were both postponed to 2021. A special “spinning medal” was ready to reward athletes on 22 March but will now be handed out on the new date of 9 May 2021. The Briton Paul Evans (1:01:44) and home favourite Rosa Mota (1:09:53) won the first race in 1990. Rosa remains the only Portuguese (female) winner of the competition – not too surprising because the world’s best runners are invited. In 1998 Antonio Pinto finished in 59:43 and in 2000 Paul Tergat improved the course record to 59:05 but at that time the course was not record-eligible.

The Sikh centenarian Fauja Singh (who became the oldest person to have run a marathon) participated in the 2006 Lisbon Half.
Gelindo Bordin, Zersenay Tadese, António Pinto and Rosa Mota did a studio photoshoot and let themselves be photographed in a very fun mood with Carlos Moia.
In 2008 the elite start was moved to make the course record-eligible and Haile Gebrselassie (59:15) won the men’s race which carried the IAAF Gold Label for the first time. The 2009 race was enlivened by the traditional South African dance group Zulu, demonstrating the cultural diversity of the event.
Mo Farah (GBR) won that race in a European record of 59:32. On the day before the race he helped the Portuguese sports secretary and Carlos Moia inaugurate a statue in honour of athletes.
In 2010 the Lisbon Half celebrated its 20th anniversary with a world record as the Eritrean Zersenay Tadese ran a time of 58:23 which remained unbeaten for eight years.
In the 2018 edition “Storm Felix” forced the organisers to move the mass start from the Bridge. The wind was the main opponent for elite and non-elite runners alike and foiled a planned attack on the world record (worth a 50,000 euro bonus) by Zersenay Tadese.
Olympic champions such as Gelindo Bordin and Stefano Baldini; Haile Gebrselassie, Tegla Loroupe (6-time winner) and Derartu Tulu were just some of the top athletes who ran in the Lisbon Half. In 2015 several of them were invited to celebrate the 25th anniversary race.
Lisbon is one of the five world’s leading half marathons that partnered to create the new international running series SuperHalfs. It was launched in September 2019 but due to Covid19 will only start in 2021. Lisbon is an historical city with stunning beaches, a welcoming culture and rich gastronomy. Good weather brings tourists and running enthusiasts alike flocking to its coast. Europe’s sunniest country is also the birthplace of Fado, a mournful music genre infused with melancholia, which forms part of the Portuguese identity and is included in the UNESCO “Intangible Cultural Heritage” list. The capital has stupendous cultural attractions, good food and wine – and a unique bridge to cross. n www.meiamaratonadelisboa.com

Finding a way When all major events in Germany were banned at the beginning of April until the end of August we were still confident that we could come through with the race on 13 September. We thought September was still so far away that our race wouldn’t be affected. But when the ban was extended until the end of October we became nervous.
Günther Vogl explains how the Altötting Half Marathon scaled down its operations to keep its place on the 2020 race calendar
We developed a concept to make it possible to hold a smaller race. In a conversation with the local health authorities the concept and the hygiene plan were conceived, coordinated and finally accepted. One of our advantages is that our race route leads through the forest and that means that we get hardly any spectators. A limit of 1000 participants was agreed. There are of course a lot of additional restrictions and rules that we had to observe. Our aim was to give the runners an opportunity to test themselves and get results on a certified course. Many thousands of medals and participant gifts (a towel with a photo print on it) were ordered for the race as usual without the year 2020 on them. That made it possible for us to use them next year (2021 will be printed on the ribbon of the medal). For this year we will order different medals – and only 1000 of them. This way we can save money and do not have to throw away thousands of medals. We are fortunate that our sponsors have remained loyal to us. There were additional expenses such as for masks, hygiene items and postage fees for sending out the start documents and start number (which participants normally pick up at the race office the day before or on the day of competition). Our detailed 14-page hygiene-concept convinced the authorities. The 1000 limit was far lower than the 3000 participants in 2019 but it was still the biggest running event in Germany since covid restrictions were put in place.
Everything was different from the previous events. To avoid contact with participants start-numbers had to be sent by post. No late registrations were allowed. The children’s race had to be cancelled. Neither victory ceremonies nor showers were allowed. We had to change the start and finish locations to a large parking and festival area. Participants had to run the first and the last 1.5km on a bike path which
connects the city with the forest in in which the rest of the race is run. We had to start a few runners at a time every 3-4 seconds. Participants had to wear masks before the race and maintain 1.5m separation between each other – which was controlled by several volunteers. On the course they could run without a mask and there were no limits as to distancing Distance Running | 2020 Edition 4

while overtaking. The number of water stations had to be reduced from six to two at which 250ml water bags were placed on a table where the runners had to grab them by themselves. After having crossed the finish line finishers had to put on new masks which were distributed by the organisation. The finish area was affected by the Corona restrictions as well. Bananas, water bottles, energy bars etc were all handed over in a pre-packed bag to avoid any contact. Even the finisher medals had to be grabbed from a table. All volunteers, like the participants, had to wear masks all the time and many of them protective gloves as well. All in all it was an extreme effort but the positive feedback of the happy and satisfied participants confirmed to us that our organisation had done an extraordinary job. The hot weather (25ºC) limited the performances. Local hero Josef Diensthuber won in 1:11:19 while the women’s race was dominated by Charlotte Taylor-Green who finished in 1:18:45 – more than three minutes outside her personal best. It was impossible to invite international runners but the National Anti-Doping Agengy still conducted tests. n www.halbmarathon.de 24
Distance Running | 2020 Edition 4
The health and hygiene concept included the following detailed provisions:
n Participants are informed about the rules through e-mail and the event website.
n Mouth protection worn in the warm-up area. The mask need not be worn during the race but must be put on again in the finish area. FFP2 masks provided for those runners who lose their own during the race.
n Information is sent to all participants via Facebook and e-mail: Each participant must meet the following requirements: no health restrictions or symptoms of illness, no contact with any infected person for at least two weeks. Hygiene measures (keep your distance, regular washing and disinfecting hands) must be observed.
n Delegation of personnel to monitor measures are being observed (e.g. dispersing groups that may form in the start area). n Start numbers sent by post. n Flying start. There is no mass start or for small groups. Consequently formation of bigger groups on the course is mitigated. There are only approx. 500 runners each on the half marathon or 6km route. n Refreshment stations on the course are reduced from 6 to 2, and none for the 6km race. Packaged water is available in bags placed on tables set up at least 3–4m apart with only one water-bag per table. When a runner picks up another is placed upon the table by personnel with face protection and gloves. No electrolyte drink or bananas etc supplied. Dropped water-bags which had contact with the runner are thrown away. n Participants’ addresses are known. This presents no problem as all information is available via the registration system. For group registrations from companies/ schools, this is entered as a mandatory field when registering. n Participants are not to bring accompanying persons.
n Medals are placed on a table at the finish where runners pick them up themselves (with race staff supervision) n Refreshments in the finish area: no electrolyte available. Fruit, energy bars and water-bags are placed in a bag for finishers to take away. Runners to keep going and not sit down or gather. Due to the staggered start and big reduction in the number of participants no crowds are expected. n Music bands etc. are only outside the finish area in order not to attract spectators. n Urinal accommodates only three people at a time. Staff will supervise to avoid groups forming when queuing. n Toilets are available in the three adjacent schools. n No late registrations, no award ceremony, no showers, no sports fair, no childcare, no warm-up programme, no pasta party, no stilt walkers etc, no changing rooms, no children’s run, no balloons, no portable toilets, no massages at the finish, no catering in the registration area.

The “Marathoneum” AIMS Marathon-Museum of Running in Berlin AIMS Marathon
– Museum of Running in Berlin
For the record By Gerd Steins and Horst Milde When the sport of distance running broke loose on the streets of New York in 1975 and then spread rapidly throughout North America and Europe few people stopped to think about what was happening – they were too busy living the moment or, as it turned out, living the era. It took time for that to change but in 1994 Berlin Marathon race director Horst Milde proposed the establishment of a ”Museum of Running” in Berlin under the supervision of AIMS. Berlin was fertile ground for such an initiative and had already hosted several exhibitions about running over the previous decade. The third AIMS World Congress had taken place in Berlin in September 1985 in parallel with the Berlin Marathon. An exhibition on running was to be on display in the shop windows of a well-known Kurfürstendamm department store in the finish area of the Berlin Marathon. Requests for items to be loaned were sent out all over the world from April 1985 and Gerd Steins penned a concept for the exhibition. In the end the exhibition could not be held but the donations received were used for the 1987 exhibition “From the Knights’ Tournament to the City Marathon”. There was not yet a significant pool of running artifacts so about 95% of the exhibited objects were borrowed. Two days before the official reunification of Germany (on 3 October 1990) the East German sports collection was transferred to the Berlin Sports Museum. It had a library stock that filled 110 linear metres and included 72,772 sports photographs and negatives, 6000 documents and 8800 other artifacts.

Replica of the silver trophy awarded to Spiridon Louis for winning the inaugural Olympic Marathon in 1896, donated by Michel Bréal. This true-to-original replica was donated to AIMS for its 25th anniversary in 2007 and is now in the Marathoneum. From AIMS (London/Athens)
From the 17th Berlin Marathon in 1990 to the 20th Berlin Marathon in 1993, the Berlin Sports Museum presented small exhibitions of posters, running objects and works of art at the Marathon Expo. Berlin is especially a city of running; with the first cross-country and road races instigated around 1900 long-distance running found an important home in Berlin and many initiatives for German and international running originated there. The Berlin Cross-Country Run (since 1964) and the Berlin Marathon (since 1974) successfully continue the tradition. The Berlin Sports Museum’s philosophy therefore naturally reflects a museum of running. The first major running exhibition: ‘From CrossCountry Run to Berlin Marathon’ was organised in the Berlin State Archives from 19 September to 7 December 1994. It was this exhibition which led to Horst Milde’s approach to AIMS. The Berlin Sports Museum was confirmed as the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running at the Congress in Macau on 6 December 1994. The history of running in Berlin had founded an international collection site which AIMS has supported ever since. The alliance with AIMS has been very successful: In January 2008 an AIMS delegation visiting the Berlin Sports Museum/AIMS Marathon Museum of Running was impressed by the work being done and began to support it finan28

AIMS/ASICS World Athlete of the Year Award. From 1992-2012 AIMS awarded the ‘Golden Shoe’ to the most outstanding athletes in the marathon each year. Samuel Wanjiru (KEN) received this award in 2009 for his victory in the Marathon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. AIMS/CITIZEN World Fastest Time Award made to runners who set a new ‘World Fastest Time’ from 1988-2010 (not officially called ‘world records’ until after 2003) for the Marathon or half marathon distance. Samuel Wanjiru (KEN) received this trophy for his world record time of 58:35 at the Fortis City-Pier City Run on 17 March 2007. (From AIMS). Front left: AIMS Award. The breaking of both the men’s and women’s world records in the same race at the BIG 25 Berlin in Berlin on 9 May 2010 was a first in distance running. cially. Since then the Museum has continuously received running artifacts of all kinds from all over the world and has become a magnet for marathon experts and enthusiasts the world over. On 21 January 2015, the word Marathoneum and a runner’s logo were trade-marked on the Forum for Sport History at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office. In future all activities of the Berlin Sports Museum and its sponsoring association Forum for Sports History regarding the national and international history of running will be under the umbrella brand Marathoneum. The Marathoneum is simultaneously a collection, archive, publisher, organiser and promotional agent for all forms of running. Over the last 25 years the Museum’s holdings on the history of running have been continuously expanded. The Marathoneum now includes about 2500 posters, 1500 T-shirts, 2200 finisher medals and 1600 accreditation cards from races around the world. In the library there are more than 95 German and English-language running magazines. The total stock of the collections is deposited and recorded according to museological rules.on about 340m of shelves in two large deposit rooms in the Berlin Sports Museum Special treasures of the museum include the extensive English language collection of Dr. David Martin (Atlanta/USA): the collections of Henryk
Paskal (Poland); Wim Verhoorn (Netherlands); Werner Sonntag (Germany); as well as the estate of the four-time marathon winner Max Wils (Berlin) and many unique pieces from Olympic Games, World Championships and German Championships from East and West. Since 2016 the Marathoneum has been providing information about the most important acquisitions in English with the “Marathoneum Documents”. These are published for the AIMS Marathon Symposium held at the Athens Marathon in November every year. By the end of 2019 the library had about 110,000 artifacts of various kinds, the photo archive had grown to about 1.5 million sports photographs and negatives and the library now extends over 1170 linear metres. Since 3 October 1990 running materials of all kinds have been solicited in a targeted manner and have been collected since 2015 under the umbrella of the Marathoneum. Due to the pandemic the exhibition “Keep on Running” is closed until further notice and will be rebuilt. Extensive collections of objects from Athens and Paris have been promised for the Marathoneum, which will be incorporated into the new exhibition.

Marathon movers
Longest-serving race directors of AIMS events By Hugh Jones Until this year it had been taken for granted that races would be held year after year, with cancellations only in exceptional circumstances. No longer: but this list of long-serving race directors of AIMS races provides a wistful look back at those times and how mass marathons first found their place on city streets. A later article will look at how the big city marathons expanded into areas of the world where distance running had not been considered as a sport for the masses and at those races which developed the phenomenon of “running tourism”. When AIMS was founded in 1981 marathon running was in its infancy as a mass-participation sport. There was usually one inspirational race director figure who had dreamed up the event and got it on the road by heading up negotiations with the city authorities and recruiting race sponsors. A few names stood out: Fred Lebow in New York, Horst Milde in Berlin and Chris Brasher in London, who were all central figures in the founding of AIMS. Some individuals still head the race organisations they created. Others, like those mentioned above, lasted 20 years or more in charge but as races grew in size and complexity they developed a more departmentalised structure. Administration and marketing became separated from operational matters. Many of the early race directors were members of running clubs and recruited fellow club members to share the workload. Among these, the New York Road Runners and Berlin’s Sport Club Charlottenburg expanded their race organisations commercially and today employ dozens of people. The City authorities, who controlled the roads
on which Marathons were run, saw these events as at least partially their own. In Barcelona, and later Rome, the City seized control and engaged a contractor to deliver the race, either with the aim of upgrading the event or to extract payment for the right to organise it. Japan has a long history of distance races which pre-dates the Western “Running Boom” of the late 1970s and early 1980s. But in Japan races were contests between elite athletes: fields were usually only a few dozen runners but attracted a lot of spectator interest and were often televised and usually sponsored by newspaper groups. As organisations they were – and still are - seen more as public properties belonging to the local governments and the athletics federations. Under this organisational model the title of race director was more of an honorary post that rotated every few years, and was typically held by someone from the federation or a leader of the local government such as the city’s mayor. This remained the case after the introduction of mass participation races starting from 2007. The idea of a long-standing race director does not fit well in the culture of Japan. China, which only developed a running culture much later, has adopted a similar model. But there is always the exception: in 1986 the Lake Saroma 100km Ultra Marathon was established by Jiro Hashimoto as a privately-organised race through his company R-bies. As the popularity of running increased it became recognised for its potential as a part of the tourism market. Events were set up specifically to attract runners from foreign countries – who would most likely spend more and have a greater impact on the local economy than nationals or locals. Tour companies went a step
Message from Paco Borao There is no doubt that road running has in the last 50 years become one of the most popular sports, with millions of people running in streets, parks and fields, bringing health and happiness to women and men all over the world. Sport is above all based upon fairness and because of this basic principle AIMS wants to pay tribute to those who allow all this to happen; the organisers who devote their lives to bringing both the spectacle for spectators and the course to all of us runners. From deep in our hearts, thank you! further and set up ‘boutique’ races as the central focus of trips they organise. Now, with 470 AIMS member races spread throughout 125 countries, distance running has been made into a truly global sport by their efforts, from Boston to Bhutan, from Venice to Vladivostok – and all points in between.

Marathon movers Longest serving race directors
One of the pioneers Horst Milde, Berlin Marathon, est. 1974 The first Berlin Marathon was held on 13 October 1974 with 286 runners. 244 of them finished. It was the first time in Germany that unregistered runners were able to take part in a race.
participants from 61 countries ran for the first time from Berlin (West) to Berlin (East) through the Brandenburg Gate and back. The race was a world sporting and political spectacle which was broadcast live worldwide. A run that was at first only a family affair had become an event that dominates the German capital for two days as spectators enthusiastically celebrate from the first to the last runner.
We fought a battle with the police for permission. Their attitude was: “only cars should be on the street, not runners”. For the first seven editions the race was confined to lesser-used roads in the Grunewald.
Following 1990 the number of participants initially declined but the winning performances improved every year and the flat and fast course strongly appealed to mass runners. When Berlin became the capital of Germany again the number of participants rose to record levels every year.
The Berlin Marathon became international on 27 September 1981 by moving from the forest roads of the Grunewald to the city centre, starting at the Reichstag and finishing on the main shopping street, Kurfürstendamm. With 3486 participants from 30 nations (2583 finishers) and incorporating wheelchairs for the first time it was a sensation in Germany at that time.
I had arranged with the management of the SCC Berlin club that I would retire as race director in 2004 (after more than 330 events over 40 years with 1.3 million participants).
Winning times improved and the number of participants climbed to almost 17,000 from 60 nations but in 1989 radical political change brought a new dimension to the Marathon.
Mark, our second son, had helped with all the running events since he was a child and had grown up with the Berlin Marathon. He took advice from his colleagues in New York and London and then became my ‘shadow’ Race Director.
The 1990 Berlin Marathon broke through to the international elite of marathon running when, on 30 September 1990 (three days before German reunification), a field capped at 25,000
Since 1974 eleven world records (previously world best times) have been set in the Berlin Marathon starting with Christa Vahlensieck (GER) in 1977 and ending with Eliud Kipchoge’s (KEN) current world record of 2:01:39 in 2018. With 46,983 registrations from 150 nations the 2019 Berlin Marathon was one of the largest races in the world. As one of the World Marathon Majors it has become an important flagship of elite and popular sports in Germany. In my wildest dreams I never imagined the success of the marathon. Although it resulted from the work of a large and experienced team, we were humbled by it.

Early fitness awareness Rick Nealis, Marine Corps Marathon, est. 1976 On 17 October 1975 Col. Jim Fowler (USMC) spurred an idea that would become the Marine Corps Reserve Marathon – which would also serve as a recruiting tool. After the Vietnam War popularity of the military declined but distance running was gaining considerable positive attention. In Washington DC the first participants came to the start line on 7 November 1976. 1018 finishers made it the largest inaugural marathon up to that time. Each participant paid only $2 to enjoy a run through the nation’s capital. Two-time Olympian and eventual MCM Hall of Famer Kenneth Moore was the overall winner with a time of 2:21:14. The Marine Corps Marathon Organization (MCMO) is celebrating 45 years of promoting the organisational skills of the United States Marines, embracing the good will of the Washington DC community and supporting our runners who are role models for a healthy lifestyle. Over 600,000 marathon runners have selected “The People’s Marathon” as a ‘must do’ race. An event for first time marathoners, the Marines pamper and assist runners throughout. Race Director Rick Nealis, a retired Major of Marines (1981); Oprah Winfrey (1994) and former Vice President of the United
States Al Gore (1997), all chose the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) to make their debut. In September 2001 the world was shocked and appalled by the coordinated terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the crashing of an airliner in a Pennsylvania field. While a feeling of terror swept the world, the MCMO was able to plan, organise and execute the first major event in the Washington DC area just six weeks later. Runners led the way in showing the world we were going to take back our lives and use our sport of running as a vehicle to bring back normalcy into our daily lives.
Rick Nealis at the MCM in 1982
Almost 20 years later, the world is again in a sense of shock as we combat another enemy, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As live events are cancelled, marathons must get to grips with how we go forward with organising and hosting large-scale running events. Race directors strive to understand the safety protocols and social distancing requirements before we can begin to put on races again for the masses. But race directors are problemsolvers: we will figure out what the future of marathon events will look like in 2021 and beyond. As AIMS members we have a responsibility to come together now more than ever and have our running events again lead the way to a healthy lifestyle. Left, Al Gore; above, Oprah Winfrey

Ultra orientation Jiro Hashimoto, Lake Saroma 100km, est.1986 On a visit to Okinawa keen ultrarunner Jiro Hashimoto saw a poster with aerial pictures of a dream landscape of green forest with blue sea on both sides. “If only I could run in such a beautiful location…” he imagined. It was an ambitious idea but he found support from town mayors and deputy mayors in Wakubetsu, Saroma and Tokoro and also from the owner of a local resort hotel which became the race headquarters.
ultra-runners. The 2019 race had 3550 runners in the 100km and 550 in the 50km. By the tenth race in 1995 1362 runners entered including elite runners from both at home and abroad. At the 1998 race Takahiro Sunada set the men’s world record of 6:13:33 and just two years later Tomoe Abe followed with a women’s world record of 6:33:11, taking 27:37 off the previous mark. In the 2018 race Nao Kazami improved the 20-year old world record by over four minutes with a time of 6:09:14.
The first race drew 50 runners of whom 26 finished – the last in 13:36:32. Just two years later the number of participants had increased tenfold (to 526) and has continued to rise as the race has become the mecca for Japanese
Nowadays the race is staged by the local authority but R-bies leads in the organisation. Mr. Shinichi Marjuma Aejima (CEO of R-bies) will succeed Mr Hashimoto in 2021.
