AUDIREVI Lake Maggiore Half Marathon & 10K, Italy 15 April 2018

Where time stands still – but runners move fast Historic, scenic and super-fast, Lake Maggiore has it all Along the shoreline of Lago Maggiore must be one of the most scenic courses imaginable. But it is also, as this year’s 11th edition of the race proved, one of the fastest half marathons around. Winner Daniel Kipchumba ran the fastest time in Italy this year and fourth fastest ever on Italian soil. It was also the fifth fastest time of 2018 anywhere in the world. Ideal weather conditions: no wind, a cloudy sky and 12–14C° temperatures, allowed the leading Kenyan trio to sustain 2:48/km pace with a 10km split time of 27:47.

The peculiarities of the race are many: runners reach the start by means of a ferry boat which crosses the Borromeo Gulf and passes close by the Borromeo Islands. It is an inspirational sight just before starting the race in Verbiana. All along the route participants can count on the special help while they are running provided by a continuous view of the Lake which pulls them on towards the finish.

The finish line in Stresa lies in front of the “Liberty Style” hotels and buildings where many famous people, from the 18th century on, stayed during their “Grand Tour” of Europe. Stendhal, Charles Dickens, Lord Byron and Ernest Hemingway all visited. Continued on page 9

Over 1500 participants from more than 30 countries crossed the finish line in Stresa after running along the lakeside with spectacular views of the Borromeo Gulf already covered in flowers and at its best dressed during the full bloom of spring. After the first edition in 2008 the race quickly became the preferred destination for many foreign runners who also come to compete in the SPORTWAY Lake Maggiore Marathon later in the year (this year on 4 November). When the half marathon date moved to April it was able to showcase Lake Maggiore in full season with major attractions open to public such as the Borromeo Islands, the Villa Taranto Botanical Gardens and the many beautiful small towns along the Gulf like Feriolo and Baveno. by time, offers a fascinating simplicity. The exotic atmosphere of the lush and peaceful Isola Madre can be ascribed to the gardens that almost totally cover it. The Borromean Islands are easy to reach from the lakeside ports and are a must-see destination for every visitor to Lake Maggiore. Within an hour’s drive from Stresa you can reach the base of Monterosa, the second highest mountain in Europe, or else some of the wildest areas in Italy such as the Valgrande, Devero and Veglia Parks. The region has many places to visit – natural areas and parks, ski resorts – but the most curious fact is that time here seems at a standstill. You can still see people wearing traditional costumes or people working the land even at very high altitude.

Continued from page 7

Located on the western side of Lake Maggiore, directly opposite Stresa, the three Borromeo Islands lie in a wide gulf surrounded by mountains. The islands take their name from the aristocratic Borromean family who took ownership of the land in the 16th and 17th centuries. Only the best architects and gardeners were called upon by the family – themselves art lovers and botanists – to breathe life into their ambitious projects. The islands “Bella” and “Madre” were transformed into grand, luxurious residences while the third island, named “Dei Pescatori” after its age-old fishing community, was left to continue its traditional way of life.

each offers a very different experience. Isola Bella was completely transformed by its occupants: its palace and gardens are the epitome of opulence and luxury. In contrast Isola Dei Pescatori, with its village unchanged

The day before the race participants can visit the botanical gardens in “Villa Taranto” (Verbania), take a boat to visit the magnificent Borromeo Islands or enjoy the lakeside with a relaxing pre-race walk. A unique way to view the course is by taking the cable car from Stresa to Mottarone Mountain from where you can see a full panorama of Lake Maggiore.

Sand, sea, sun – and run About 8000 people celebrated Earth day by participating in the Agadir Green Marathon making it one of the city’s most successful events this year.

An escape where you can preserve the environment and forget about daily routine

The marathon is a great way for a visitor to discover Agadir – by offering a sporting challenge framed by the city itself. The event is also noteworthy for its eco-friendly stance. The Agadir Green Marathon is mindful of environmental issues and highlights Morocco's desire to commit to greater respect for the environment.

Dubbed the first green Marathon in Morocco, this year’s edition of the Agadir Marathon was held under the banner “Let’s Run for the Environment.” Race director Rachid Ben Meziane said the slogan is inspired by the city’s commitment to preserve the environment and to sustain green spaces. The Marathon brought together internationally renowned athletes alongside thousands of running enthusiasts. The programme includes the Marathon, a half Marathon and a 7km ‘Mini-Marathon’.

The weather was perfect and participants were cheering, dancing and taking pictures to capture those beautiful moments. There was nothing but happiness and joy throughout the entire marathon course.

The sixth Green Marathon remained faithful to the environment through a series of activities on the sidelines of the event. These activities focused on the importance of linking sports to the preservation of the environment. Organisers emphasised afforestation and partnering with associations that work to preserve the environment and to sustain green spaces.

A three-hour flight away from Paris, similar to many other European cities, Agadir is a charming seaside city that attracts tourists from all over the world. Agadir’s beaches offer an escape where you can forget about daily routine. It is also a place where tourism runs in parallel with well-being: Sport and fitness are the focus of the many seaside thalassotherapy centres. Looking ahead | 16 September 2018 Sarajevo Sberbank Half Marathon, Bosnia and Herzegovina

On the run in scenic Sarajevo

Pictures: VANJA CERIMAGIC

A “runfest” through historic streets and city thoroughfares Sarajevo Sberbank Half Marathon is run on the main streets of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. What started as a small event, organised through the enthusiasm of a few local people, grew to a running festival that in 2017 hosted around 3000 runners from more than 30 countries. In this year’s event three races start at the same time: the Sarajevo Sberbank Half Marathon, the G-Drive Relay Half Marathon and the Novo Nordisk Fun Run (4km), so for those not ready to run the full distance there are plenty of other opportunities in the shorter events of the newlynamed “Olimpija Sarajevo Run Fest”. The proportion of women taking part in the half marathon has grown to 40% of all participants. Women can enter a ‘Girls on the Run’ event during the weekend preceding the Half Marathon. This year it is accompanied by a

children’s run – a perfect opportunity for those staying longer in the city with the entire family. The Sarajevo Sberbank Half Marathon is flat and fast and and leads you through the most beautiful and scenic parts of Sarajevo including most of the historic landmarks of the city: Ottoman, Habsburg and Yugoslav buildings, on bridges over the Miljacka River, through the old town, and into the city’s Kosevo Olympic stadium. The final sprint to the finish line takes you along the city’s main thoroughfare which is filled with eager spectators cheering wildly. Besides plentiful water and fruit stations along the route high school choirs and orchestras and live DJs play motivational music at strategic points – leading you on to the finish line. That’s where the fun starts: at the post-race party beer, local cevapi and Bosnian coffee are served and live music adds to the full event experience. Race morning can bring anything from heat to cooler weather and rain. September weather in Bosnia is variable so make sure you bring easyto-shed layers of clothing. Don’t hesitate to visit Sarajevo Sberbank Half Marathon – although a half marathon race it offers the full experience of history, sport, culture, food and fun – and all other aspects that make runners happy. Organisers aim to offer the best quality for price experience to all participants, including carefully designed high quality t-shirts and medals for every finisher. ■ sarajevomarathon.ba/en Distance Running | 2018 Edition 3

A fast course and grand sightseeing tour around the Danish capital

Building on success With more than 22,000 runners Copenhagen Half Marathon is by far the biggest running event in Denmark. Built on the success of the World Half Marathon Championships held in Copenhagen in 2014 the CPH Half has staged some of the fastest half marathon times in the world since its inaugural edition in 2015. Three runners under 59 minutes and a world lead time of 58:40 clocked by Abraham Cheroben – only 18 seconds short of a new world record – made the 2017 Copenhagen The Goverment building Christiansborg is a part of the route Picture: James Hjertholm

Half Marathon one of the road running highlights of the year. This year the world record will again be targeted in both the men’s and women’s races with up to 25,000 recreational runners following the leaders. The fast course offers a good chance to run a new personal best but also takes participants through the best parts of Copenhagen and makes for a grand sightseeing tour around the Danish capital. Starting at the fashionable and green Østerbro runners proceed to the multicultural Nørrebro where the legendary atmosphere on Dr. Louises Bro is sure to give

runners chills. After nearly 4km on Nørrebro runners reach the majestic Frederiksberg to take in the Avenue Frederiksberg Allé draped in Danish flags and chock full of spectators. Next is the hip and creative Vesterbro packed with entertainment, music, and good vibes. Leaving Vesterbro runners follow the waterfront towards the inner city and pass by tourist attractions and historical monuments such as the Copenhagen Stock Exchange, The Theatre Royal and Christiansborg. The final kilometres take runners back to Østerbro where a unique kilometre-long finishing stretch awaits. CPH Half is not only renowned for its fast and scenic course but also for a sublime atmosphere throughout the entire city. If you are bringing supporters the route offers ample opportunity for cheering while at the same time enjoying everything that Copenhagen has to offer – from amazing food experiences to a cooling dip in the harbour. On the day before the race there is a children's event starting and finishing just a few metres from where the CPH Half starts. The children can choose to run one or two kilometres. If you’re looking for a fast, beautiful and unique half marathon which also offers something for the entire family this major half marathon in the Danish capital is one for the books. ■ copenhagenhalfmarathon.dk Distance Running | 2018 Edition 3

Looking ahead | 22 September 2018 International Vladivostok Marathon, Russia Run with fascinating views of the city where East and West meet

Pictures: Anton Balashov

Vladivostok lies in the Far East of Russia: a seaport on the edge of the earth. You can feel the harmonious mix of the East and West here. Set beside the Sea of Japan, its hills are blown by winds from four sides. Dozens of pristine islands lie offshore scattered in the warm, wild sea. The cuisine is tremendous with an abundance of seafood. The natural and architectural surroundings are beautiful, especially at the time of the race. It is a mellow season with an average air temperature of 16°C, moderate humidity and sunny, breezy days. Vladivostok – a two-hour flight from Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing – stepped on to the running map only two years ago but has already made a good impression. Last year the number of participants reached 2000 so it is not yet a large event by the standards of world marathons. Even so, people come from far and wide to take part with runners from 89 cities of 18 countries. Cities in the region lie far apart and a marathon in the Far East of Russia is considered as something exotic – but available. The Marathon course is not easy, with many gradients, but it is interesting. Runners face hills and wind but are surrounded by the beauty of the locality. It is not for nothing that the race slogan is “A reason to be proud of yourself”. Whether you achieve success in the 5km, the 21.1km or in the legendary 42.195km it will be awesome. There is also a 1km race for children.

Bridges of Vladivostok Participants run on the island, woods on one side and the sea on the other, with the two main bridges of the city spanning across. These are the “Russian” and “Golden” bridges from which you get fascinating views of the city, the sea and hills – and the seagulls which, according to a city legend, sing to runners in a familiar language. The final kilometres are on the main city streets and the finish is in the central square. There are many interesting sights that are scattered along the route but in addition entertainment platforms are set up for runners and spectators with the central square offering a food court zone, massage tents, theme-based kiosks, games and music. The day after the marathon is Vladivostok’s ‘Tiger Day’ which features a colourful procession around the city finishing with a concert and salute. To register visit www.russiarunning.com and pay the registration fee. The backpack, t-shirt and start number with MyLaps timing chip are included in the price. Everyone gets a designer medal on the finish line and each participant in the marathon is insured for 100,000 rubles. Police and medical staff are assisted in keeping the race safe by bicycle patrols throughout the length of the course. Toilets and refreshment points offering water, isotonic drinks, bananas, dried fruit and chocolate are available every 5km. Every runner receives a finish line photo of themselves.

Vladivostok is a free port with ‘relaxed’ visa requirements. Nationals of some countries* can apply for an electronic visa on the website https://evisa.kdmid.ru/en-US/Home/Index It is valid up to 30 days from the moment of registration for a period of 8 days and is issued free of charge. An invitation, hotel reservations and other documents are not required. The visa takes 4 days to be issued. ‘Pearl of the Moselle’ offers all-round riverside experience The Duchy of Luxembourg’s oldest race is run along the Moselle River. The out-andback course, starting and finishing in Remich, is flat and offers optimum conditions to run a fast time. The 57th edition will host over 1500 runners and bring together some of the top 100 runners in the world as well as those who take part just for fun. Remich is one of the most important tourist centres near the German-Luxembourg border. It was known as ‘Remacum’ in ancient times and was conquered and destroyed several times. A fortress was constructed of which the remnants are still visible.

Tourist cruisers ply on the Moselle River and bikes are available for rent. There are biking and running trails along the river and through the surrounding forests. Nearby are a children’s playground, a large mini-golf course and a heated swimming pool of Olympic proportions. The renowned thermal baths in Mondorf-lesBains are within 20km of Remich.

of Luxembourg’s wine culture. There are many and varied wineries, one underground, in the neighbouring villages which offer tastings of the country’s internationally recognised wines. Organisers also offer two races for children over 700m and 1500m. ■ www.ingrouteduvin.lu

Remich offers a perfect starting point for trips throughout the region but itself lies at the heart Photo: Fern Morbach/Ville de Remich

The town is located within a picturesque panorama of vineyards and green spaces. A 3km-long promenade, bordered with birch and cherry trees, runs along the Moselle. There is a wide variety of activities for all ages, including river cruises and wine tastings. Remich has charming old alleyways and historically important remains to explore. The St Nicolas Gate was built in honour of the patron saint of fishermen which were previously so important to the town. St Cunibert Street is home to this religious man’s birthplace who was Archbishop of Cologne in the seventh century. The pedestrianised centre is dotted with small squares and fountains. The tower of the parish church offers a panoramic view of the village as well as the Park Brill.

Looking ahead | 7 October 2018 Okanagan Marathon, Canada

A family fitness and lifestyle weekend

Quintessential fall atmosphere The beautiful Okanagan Valley lies in south-central British Columbia. With its low hills and oblong lakes it is a popular destination for runners. During Canadian Thanksgiving weekend the Okanagan Marathon welcomes thousands of participants to Kelowna’s premier running event – recognised as Western Canada’s flattest and fastest course.

The Marathon starts and finishes at City Park on Okanagan Lake which features a long sandy beach. From the Park runners pass through sections of downtown before heading into established neighbourhoods. The course then loops back towards the waterfront pathway, finishing at the beachfront public park.

Also known as a family fitness and lifestyle weekend, the Okanagan Marathon attracts many seasonal and recreational runners and boasts five races from the ABC Kids Fun 1km run to the Marathon. Racers can also take part in three other events including a 5km, 10km and Half Marathon. Everyone will enjoy scenic views along Lake Okanagan on a fast course certified as a Boston Marathon qualifying race. Every year families delight in the picturesque landscape and festive atmosphere as their children take part in supervised movement activities on the grassy greens of City Park. Face painted youngsters enjoy jumping jacks, the long jump, a shuttle run, and hurdles, followed by a 1km run, where enthusiastic parents often join in. One of the highlights is watching the smiling faces of children completing their first race wearing a race t-shirt and receiving an official course medal, the same size and weight as the other participants receive. Kelowna receives over 2000 hours of sunshine annually which makes the event one for the fall calendar. The Okanagan has received worldwide attention for its award-winning wineries and the organisers set up an area on site for local wine tastings. Many racers extend their stays to enjoy wine tasting tours at the 200-plus wineries dotted along the valley. The Running Room Friendship Run on Saturday provides access to running tips and insights from Running Room founder John Stanton. Participants can overcome any pre-race nerves and enjoy the camaraderie among old and new friends. Participants arriving outside the Sports Expo on race day can’t miss the wooden crates of apples, freshly picked and provided by Okanagan Valley farms. With the sweet aroma of apples in the air it provides the quintessential, classic Canadian fall atmosphere. ■ www.okanaganmarathon.ca

Looking ahead | 4 November 2018 JTBC Seoul Marathon, Korea

The JTBC Seoul Marathon has produced many promising stars, remarkable records, and touching stories over the last 20 years. It is the only marathon event that offers a full course division for wheelchair racers. It is more than just a marathon. Alongside the competition it creates a friendly and festive atmosphere, making this race one for everyone. Thanks to the flat course and Seoul’s beautiful fall scenery it has become one of the most popular races in Korea. The race started off as the JoongAng Seoul Half Marathon in 1999. It brought hopes and challenges to the citizens of Korea in the midst of the economic crisis. The race was created to commemorate the spirit of 1988 Seoul Olympics. The course was used for the national championships in 2001 and featured a full marathon course the following year. Since then it has grown to become one of the largest international marathons in Asia. A 10km event was added in 2016 to open the event up to runners of all levels and has steadily increased the size of its field every year since then. After 20 years of success, JoongAng Seoul Marathon is turning itself into something more than a marathon. JTBC, one of the most popular television channels in Korea, is rebranding the race and giving it new colour. By putting JTBC's innovative identity front and centre it will become a festival for every runner. Tracing a loop across Seoul, JTBC Seoul Marathon is a good way to see the city. The flat course is designed to showcase the beauty of

New colour for Seoul More than a marathon: tracing a loop across the city Seoul and takes in the south-east part of the city before looping back to finish in the Jamsil Olympic Stadium, a shrine of Korean sport. Along the way runners can enjoy the stunning fall scenery. Runners come to break records: winning times are regularly under 2:09 and once under 2:06. Early November brings the best weather for long distance running with the average temperature around 5°C. Over 15,000 participants from all around the world run the JTBC Seoul Marathon every year but since this race will be newly boosted by JTBC many more are expected this year, beginners as well as elites. The full-length course division allows both elite runners and wheelchair racers the best possible competitive conditions. Everyone can challenge themselves to their utmost and create their own unforgettable memories. The 10km event is mainly a fun run and offers the opportunity to experience the marathon without being an elite athlete. Early November is the best time to visit Seoul as you get to see the maple leaves in peak colour. â– marathon.joins.com

Looking ahead | 18 November 2018 Radisson Blu Larnaka International Marathon, Cyprus

In the last days of summer Green running – and pink flamingos – await visitors

Last year the city of Larnaka put on its first 1st Radisson Blu Larnaka International Marathon and it was a great one. Almost 5000 runners of all ages, from experienced runners to complete beginners, were given an experience to remember: running along the coastline, passing imposing monuments on the way and finishing under the palm trees.

With all this support the organisers could provide everything that runners have grown to appreciate over the years for a very low entry fee. It includes a running shirt, a goodie bag filled with isotonic drinks and power bars and on free post-race massage.

The City and its residents embraced the Marathon because they saw the benefits it brought to their city and the minimal disturbance to their lives. Race day was a real celebration for everyone as over 15,000 people cheered on the runners taking part.

It was the first ‘green’ Marathon in Cyprus. The Municipality provided special bins for recycling and helped clear up everything just a few hours after the event. The Commissioner for the Environment of Cyprus gave her blessing and Green Dot Cyprus, the top environmental organisation in Cyprus, helped ensure the Marathon was as environmentally friendly as possible.

Come and be part of one of the most important sporting events in the Eastern Mediterranean. Come and experience intense moments of emotion, action and of course relaxation. There is no better way to do that than take part in the second edition of the 1st Radisson Blu Larnaka International Marathon. ■ www.larnakamarathon.com

The race route is almost flat for the entire 42.2km. It runs next to the sea and takes you past salt lakes with flamingos enjoying their last days of summer before moving on to Africa; past the famous Hala Sultan Tekke, one of the most important mosques of Islam; and the final turn is right next to Larnaka’s medieval castle. After the first edition the race became an AIMS member. The experienced organising team behind it also puts on the iconic Athens Classic Marathon, the Nafplio Marathon, the Crete Marathon and many more. The first race was sponsored by the island’s biggest companies, helped by the Municipality of Larnaka and supported by the Republic of Cyprus Government as it tries to widen the touristic attractions of the island to more than the magnificent beaches and the sunny blue skies. Opinion

Royal re-run, 1908– 2018 Marathon history was revisited by events in London on 22 April On 24 July 1908 Princess Mary, the wife of the future HM King George V of Great Britain, gave the signal for runners to start the London Olympic Marathon from the grounds of Windsor Castle. They entered the White City Stadium in west London after 26 miles and had another 385 yards to complete before reaching the finish line. This distance was to become what subsequently defined the Marathon, a race which had previously been of variable length. The Marathon was still in its infancy as an athletic event; it had only been ‘invented’ for the inaugural modern Olympic Games in Athens 12 years earlier. From the outset it attracted patronage from royalty. King Constantine of Greece awaited the arrival of runners at the finish in the Panathenaikos Stadium in Athens. As the leader – a local Athenian – entered the stadium Crown Prince Constantine and Prince

George jumped from their seats to escort Spiridon Louis to victory over the last 100 metres on the track. An escort on the last lap was something that Dorando Pietri also received in the final stages of the 1908 Olympic race. The track was 536.44m (×3 = 1609.34m, or 1 mile). As Pietri attempted to take the shorter, counter-clockwise route to the finish (‘trackwise’ as we know it today but races were run either way around in those days) he was re-directed sharply to his left, stumbled and fell. Badly dehydrated, he had struggled to cover the last mile in 13 minutes (over 8 mins/km). He collapsed several times on the track but was helped up and partly escorted by race officials before breaking into a last-gasp sprint to the line. All this was closely observed by Princess Mary’s mother-in-law and HM King Edward VII’s wife, Queen Alexandra, from the royal box adjacent

to the finish. When Pietri was later inevitably disqualified for receiving assistance she took the trouble to commission a special trophy for him, the ‘Pietri’ Trophy. At the awards ceremony the winner, USA’s Johnny Hayes, was completely upstaged. The young Irving Berlin composed a song in Pietri’s honour, adding to his lustre. Such was the drama that had unfolded during the race that the distance of 26 miles 385 yards, later converted to 42195m, became fixed as the one constant in a series of highly publicised re-matches of the main players in the race that took place in various locations in the USA, including indoor venues, over the next few years. It became the confirmed ‘classic distance’ of a marathon which up until then had been variable. 109 years and 253 days after that defining race history echoed down the ages: Princess Mary’s grand-daughter, HM Queen Elizabeth II, signalled the start of the 2018 London Marathon from that same Windsor Castle lawn. The start line was elsewhere: about a marathon’s length due east on Blackheath, on the other side of the Greenwich (zero) meridian, as images appeared on giant screens for the 41,000 runners assembled. The distance was the same. The finish was at Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s official residence in London, and runners were awaited there by her grandson Prince Harry. At 10.00 on 22 April the Queen pressed a button which the British press described as clunky ‘old technology’. The technology was more likely just choreography scripted by the atomic clock. Whatever the details, royalty knows how to put on a show – and marathons seem to be part of the programme. Distance Running | 2018 Edition 3

Marathon movers Ron Hill, record breaker and innovator

Breaking the mold Ron Hill was not just a world record breaking marathon runner but a true innovator in a sport which had been bound by tradition for decades. Hill was the second man to break 2:10 in the marathon. He set four world records at lessrecognised distances but never laid claim to the marathon world record. He could have done so through his 2:09:28 win at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh as there was always doubt over the 2:08:33.4 recorded by Derek Clayton in Antwerp the previous year (see pages ??-??).

While he was competing at the highest level, but at a time when there was no financial reward for performance, he graduated from university with a PhD in textile chemistry and pioneered production of specialist clothing for runners through his Ron Hill Sports company. In common with many British distance runners of the time Hill started by running cross country in the winter and track in the summer. In 1963 he equalled the British Continued on page 59 Picture: Douglas Miller/Getty

Hill had graduated with his PhD in 1970 and established his company. It started to put out a range of innovative new items of clothing that very quickly became adopted as standard requirements: “Freedom” shorts; the iconic string vest that he had worn in competition; waterproof running tops with reflective strips; and the enormously popular ‘Ron Hill tracksters’ which, along with Hely Hansen thermal tops, passed into the British running vernacular. Hill says he founded the company “because I was running to and from work in the dark in winter and wondered what I needed to stay safe.” Sales at one point topped £6 million but Hill ran into financial difficulties in the early 1990s and sold out. He later founded another company, ‘Hilly Clothing’, which among other items specialises in technical socks.

record for six miles at the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) championships with a time of 27:49.8. In the following year’s race he was outkicked but finished less than half a second behind Mike Bullivant as both finished 20 seconds inside the UK record. He competed at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo finishing 18th in the 10000m (29:53) and 19th in the marathon (2:25:35). He set his first world record by running 1:15:22.6 for 25km, more than a minute faster than the previous best by Emil Zatopek. He set a world record of 1:12:48.2 for 15 miles ‘en passant’ during the same race. Hill finished 12th in the 1966 European Championships Marathon in Budapest. On the UK domestic scene he dominated the 10-mile event by winning the AAA championships every year from 1965–1968 and in the 1968 race setting a world record of 47:02.2. That summer

he finished seventh in the Marathon at the 1968 Mexico Olympics before again lowering the 10-mile world record to 46:44. Hill won the 1969 European Championships Marathon on the classic but notoriously tough Marathon-to-Athens course. The following year he was at the peak of his powers with his sub2:10 Commonwealth win preceded by victory in the 1970 Boston Marathon with a new course record of 2:10:30, an improvement of three minutes. In Edinburgh Hill passed through 10km in 29:24, a pace described as ‘suicidal’ (projected as 2:04 for the full distance). On the strength of his Boston and Edinburgh wins Hill was ranked by Track & Field News as top marathoner in the world for 1970. The next year he was honoured with the Order of the British Empire for “services to athletics”. His final Olympics was at the 1972 Munich Games where he finished sixth in the marathon at the age of 33.

Ron Hill started running when many still thought that good nutrition consisted of a prerace steak. Yet he developed the carbohydrate bleed-out and boost diet for Marathon runners to raise muscle glycogen levels in the week before the race. The popular legacy of his innovation survives in the pre-race pasta parties of today’s mass marathons. According to Hill’s running logs he started a streak of training on consecutive days on 20 December 1964 and did not default on it until 30 January 2017, 52 years and 39 days later. He defined a run as covering at least one mile at any pace. His streak included post-operative workouts on crutches. By April 2014 he claimed to have run 159,106.5 miles. His ‘streak’ ended on 30 January 2017 with the announcement on his Facebook page that “Due to ill health Ron has decided to take a day off”. He reached his goal of racing in 100 countries before his 70th birthday with races in Panama and the Faroe Islands. His final marathon was the centennial Boston Marathon in 1996. He completed 115 marathons and recorded 21 marathon victories. Distance Running | 2018 Edition 3

Marathon greats Born in 1942 in the north-west of England and raised in Northern Ireland Derek Clayton made his mark on running history on 3 December 1967 by winning the Fukuoka Marathon in the world record time of 2:09:36 seconds. It was the first time anyone had run a marathon in under 2 hours 10 minutes. It broke the previous record, Morio Shigematsu’s 2:12.00 set in the Polytechnic Marathon two and a half years previously, by two and a half minutes. It was a landmark achievement. Clayton focused on achieving results purely for himself. He was completely self-trained and averaged 225–255km (140–160 miles) a week. His relentless training led to numerous injuries and subsequent operations. During 12 years of his wearing training regime he underwent major surgery seven times, four times on his Achilles tendons, twice on each knee and once on his heel. Clayton came into the Fukuoka race with a personal best of 2:18:28 – as much as 5 minutes slower than some of his rivals. He had raced the distance only four times previously and never competed outside of Australia. In the early stages he ran alongside New Zealander Mike Ryan. They passed 5km in 15:06,10km in 29:57 and 15km in 44:57. As they reached 20km the wind turned against the runners and Clayton went ahead to record a first half of 1:03:22 while Japan’s Sei-ichiro Sasaki was closing the gap on him. Sasaki caught Clayton as they passed through 30km together in 1:30:32. Clayton loomed 22cm (11 inches) over the Japanese. Conventional wisdom was that Sasaki’s slighter frame would be to his competitive advantage as the two tested each other. Sasaki suffered a stitch after 34km and faded as Clayton ran 16:05 for the 5km from 35–40km (2:02:16). He finished with a new world record of 2:09:36. Sasaki recorded the second fastest time ever run with 2:11:17.

Runner who broke 2:10:00 barrier for the first time

Derek Clayton He never managed to match this high standard of performance in international championships. He finished seventh in 2:27:33 at the 1968 Olympics held at altitude in Mexico City and 13th in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich (2:19:49). In the Commonwealth Games he failed to finish both in 1970 (Edinburgh) and in 1974 (Christchurch). On 30 May 1969 Clayton lined up in ebullient mood at the start of the Antwerp Marathon in Belgium. According to fellow competitor Jim Alder, the 1966 Commonwealth Games Champion, he claimed that he had come “to put the world record out of sight”. Nine days previously he had run a Marathon in Ankara (at a not insignificant 950m altitude) recording 2:17:26 in an effort he described to Alder as “a breeze”. From the gun the Canadian Robert Moore set off at a furious pace to pass through 10km in 29:25. Clayton then passed Moore on a relentless solo run to achieve his objective with a finish time recorded as 2:08:33.4. Clayton later reported that for a week following the race he was “urinating quantities of blood and vomiting black mucus”.

Whatever the effort that went in to this performance the time – or rather the distance that Clayton ran – has always been disputed. Although accurate methods of measurement did exist – including the ‘calibrated bicycle method’ exclusively used today – the official method used by the Belgian Federation at the time was the average of three car odometer readings. This is known to substantially underestimate the course length. By contrast the measurement method then used in Japan is still recognised today as likely to yield more accurate courses than those measured by the approved ‘calibrated bicycle’. The reason the ‘wire method’ did not become officially adopted was due to the time and resources required to implement it rather than any concern over its accuracy. Derek Clayton retired from marathon running in 1974 but competed in both cycling and golf at the World Masters’ Games in Brisbane (1994) and at the 1995 and 1997 Australian Masters' Games in Melbourne and Canberra. He was Deputy Chairman of the 1995 Australian Masters' Games and Chairman of the Melbourne Marathon from 1994–2000. He is a current board member of the Victorian Institute of Sport. Lives remembered A mechanical engineer by training, Pete Riegel was also an enthusiastic distance runner who applied his expertise and logical thinking to the sport he loved. In 1977 he had come up with a formula for comparing relative performances at different distances. Its simplicity and predictive accuracy resulted in it being widely adopted by publications such as Runner’s World.

Pete Riegel 30 January 1935—28 May 2018

The recognised method of measuring road running courses was developed in the 1960s by John Jewell in Great Britain and Ted Corbett in the United States but was not widely applied until much later. The measurement of the Los Angeles Olympic Marathon in 1984 provided a practical opportunity for some of the leading measurers in North America to come together and share their ideas and experience. From this a more robust, US-wide administrative system was built which owed much to Riegel’s insight. New York measurer Jim Gerweck says “an indication of what a visionary he was was in establishing the Road Running Technical Council as a Council rather than a Committee when The Athletics Congress/USA Track & Field was being formed [so] insulating us from the ‘politics’ that plagues so much of that body. [Also] the logic of making certifiers specific to each state rather than to USATF Associations.” As founder and editor of Measurement News Riegel created a forum for ideas and discussion which held the measurement community together both in the US and worldwide. He also travelled widely both to measure and to teach the measurement method. Along with others he validated the courses on which world marathon records were set (London 1985, Rotterdam 1985 and 1988). In 1995 he retired from his career in research at the Battelle Memorial Institute's Columbus Laboratory. In 1996 he headed the team which measured the Atlanta Olympic Marathon course and included measurers from Australia, France, UK and South Africa. Since 1985 he had been travelling every year to validate the London Marathon course (on which Khalid Kannouchi and Paula Radcliffe set world records) and in doing so developed a strong friendship with London Marathon co-founder John Disley. Riegel and Disley, along with Ted Paulin of Australia and Jean-Francois Delasalle from

Pete Riegel and John Disley descending from Pikes Peak

France, became the original continental “Area Administrators” of the worldwide certification system set up by AIMS and IAAF in the 1990s. He continued to validate the London Marathon course until 2010. Two years before relinquishing this role he had stepped in to rescue the ‘Jones Counter’ – the essential tool used to measure running courses – when the person assembling them could no longer obtain the parts. The inventor of the counter, Alan Jones, said: “Pete decided that we

Left to right: Pete Riegel, Joan Riegel and Jean-Francois Delasalle in Amiens, 1991

should no longer depend on existing parts which can go obsolete so he teamed up with his son Tom. They invented a new design and created the tooling to allow them to be made. For the last ten years they have provided a steady flow of counters to measurers all over the world.” Pete Riegel is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan, and sons Stuart and Tom.
