A Message from the Author of Firecatcher Dear Paddock Community, Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would get the opportunity to see The Firecatcher onstage. Thank you so much to Mr. Z. for bringing my novel to life, and for his and Leah Blaine’s amazing triumph of adapting it to the stage, improving it to make it flow as well as it does today. (That is no small feat, because I wrote it in sixth grade, and it wasn’t 100% smoothed out yet.) Thank you, Paddock, for being such a special place where I felt I could write something as bold as this at such a young age. I got nothing but support from my teachers and friends, and it shaped me in remarkable ways. Thank you to my family, my biggest fans: Mom, Dad, Autumn, Ben, and Josh. You always inspired me to go further, be braver, and persevere in the things I loved. I couldn’t have gotten nearly as far as I did without you. As a 17-year-old senior at Fremd High School, I remember fondly the close friendships forged during my time in Paddock’s unparalleled theater program, including Evelyn, Hailey, Neha, and Nina (whose names may sound familiar if you check the cast list). I can’t thank Mr. Z. enough for something so monumental in my life. Throughout my Paddock career, I was in four productions: Narnia, Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka, and Anastasia. I always looked forward to rehearsals on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, where I could hang out with my closest friends doing one thing we absolutely loved. I’ll never forget going in early one Saturday to learn a choreographed fight scene for Anastasia. I loved every part of it. The productions taught me how to have confidence onstage, communicate with my cast mates and director, and, of course, memorize the script. I have such fond memories: practicing lines with Autumn, rehearsing dance steps, and especially teaching Hailey how to do a Russian accent for her performance as Bartok in Anastasia. After recently watching the cast rehearse The Firecatcher, I came away unbelievably impressed. Each cast member has extraordinary talent and passion for the show, and it was surreal to answer their questions about characters they’re bringing to life from my imagination. They have proven themselves worthy of carrying the torch of Mr. Z.’s theater program.
Each of my three books are available on Amazon for you to enjoy. For my most recent novel, The Impulse, I shed my pen name for my real one. I’m grateful for who I’ve become because of Algebra Carter, and the confidence I’ve gained with my writing since. I plan to study English and Creative Writing next year, as I begin my adventure at a college to be determined soon! You guys, Mr. Z. is a treasure, and we are so fortunate to have had him pour his heart and soul into Paddock theater all these years. Would you please look him in the eye and tell him that? Laila is super excited to be working with Paddock School Ensemble where she was last seen playing “Penguin” in SUPER FRIENDS. Prior to that she was seen playing “Stormtrooper 3” and “Dancer 3” in THE FORCE AND THE FURIOUS, and “Havoc” in SPEED RACER 2-A CRY FOR VENGEANCE. Along with her passion for acting, Laila enjoys singing and participates in chorus at Paddock. When Laila is not in school, she enjoys playing tennis, volleyball and swimming. Kenny is thrilled to be working with the Paddock School Ensemble where she was last seen in the ensemble of the musical SUPER FRIENDS. She also performed as “Bib Fortuna”and “Stormtrooper 13” in THE FORCE AND THE FURIOUS, and “Guard #2” in SPEEDRACER 2 :A CRY FOR VENGEANCE. Kenny sings in chorus and plays multiple instruments including piano and clarinet. She also enjoys playing golf, basketball, and loves to swim. Harper is pleased to be working again with the Paddock School Ensemble where she was last seen playing superhero "Robin" in the musical, SUPER FRIENDS. She made her acting debut at Paddock last fall playing villain "Sebulba" in the comedy, FORCE AND THE FURIOUS. Harper likes to play soccer and basketball in her free time. She is a free spirit who loves nature and animals. Her dream is to one day become a veterinarian and have a farm of her own. Unique is excited to be working with Paddock School Ensemble where she was last seen playing “Mara Jade” in The Force and The Furious and “Cat Woman” in Super Friends. Unique in her free time likes to draw, sing, dance and spend time with friends. She also likes playing youth sports with in her community. Evelyn Blake – Evelyn Paddock School Ensemble Debut
Evelyn is a 4th grader in Mrs. Byrd's class and this is her very first performance with Paddock and in general! Evelyn is very excited to be part of this show and is eager to get on the stage. In her free time Evelyn enjoys hanging out with her friends, reading, playing softball, arts and crafts, and spending time with her family. Evelyn would like to thank her family for supporting her in the play and sends a special shoutout to her little sister, Delaney!
Olivia Derbick – Hailey Paddock School Ensemble Debut
Olivia is very thrilled to be a part of this year's play, Firecatcher as “Hailey”. This is her first time being a part of a school ensemble and she couldn’t be more excited! In Olivia’s free time she enjoys competitive cheer, crafting and playing with her friends. Since this is Olivia’s last year at Paddock, she is very happy to be a part of this Production with such a great cast. She looks forward to learning about acting and making lasting memories. Mason Getz is happy to be returning to Paddock School Ensemble having previously been seen as Aquaman in the musical Super Friends last year. Mason is rounding out his last year at Paddock as a 5th grader. In addition to acting and singing, Mason enjoys reading and playing football and basketball. Zoe is thrilled to be in another Paddock School Ensemble production. She is in 6th grade and enjoys reading, singing, watching TV and playing with her little sister, Ellie. Her past performances include “Superman” in Super Friends the Musical, “Ani” in Star Wars The Force and the Furious, and “Vance” in Speed Racer 2 A Cry for Vengeance. She would like to thank her mom, dad, sister and entire family for their endless support, encouragement and love. Eliza is excited to be performing in her second Paddock production after playing Riddler in the spring musical production of Super Friends. She also performed this summer in the Park District production of The Day Aliens Attacked Fairfield: The Town Where Nothing Ever Happened playing the role of Dad. Eliza enjoys spending time with friends, listening to music, and drawing. Eliza would like say a super special thank you to her grandmother for buying a plane ticket the day she was cast and coming from NY to see her perform.

Laurelle Varilla– Lydia Gardner Previously at Paddock Ensemble: Officer 3/ President/Superfriends
Laurelle is thrilled to play “Mrs. Lydia Gardner” in the Paddock School play Firecatcher. She is in 5th grade and loves hanging out with her friends, dancing and acting. She is in the Junior Dance Company of the Palatine Dance Program where she participated in many dance performances including the annual summer and holiday dance events. In June 2023, Laurelle also played the “Rebecca Gorgeous” in the Palatine Park District’s Broadway Theater The Day The Aliens Attacked Fairfield. Laurelle wants to thank her mom, dad and little brother, Matthew for supporting her love of acting.

Mackenzie is excited for her 4th production with the Paddock Ensemble. She was last seen as a super fan in SUPERFRIENDS. She has enjoyed participating in drama club and learning about the performing arts from Mr. Z. Maggie Ginger – Cacklefront Previously at Paddock Ensemble: Ensemble/ Superfriends
Maggie is very excited to be part of the cast this fall. She was last seen singing and dancing as part of the Superfriends ensemble in the spring show. In her free time, Maggie loves horse riding and volunteering with the ponies and horses at Palatine Stables. She is very thankful for all the family support she gets!
Ryan Gebhardt – Fielderlow Previously at Paddock Ensemble: Mr. Freeze/Egghead/ Superfriends, Stormtrooper 16/Jabba the Hutt/ The Force and the Furious
Ryan is excited to be back on stage at Paddock in 2023. He was last seen as Mr. Freeze and Egghead in "Superfriends" and Jabba the Hut and a Stormtrooper in "The Force and the Furious". Artistic Director: Andre Zielinski In 2016 when I found out a Paddock student published a book I was absolutely amazed. I know we have the best students, but getting a book published at the ripe old age of 10 was an accomplishment that I had never seen. To top it off that same author Algebra Carter (Ashlyn Riddle) would go on to publish two more books before she was even out of high school. It was at the 3rd book publishing party I approached her with a dream of creating a full circle of the Arts at Paddock. From being a student watching the theater productions on stage to being the writer for one of the theater productions. With kindness Ashlyn gave me the go ahead to adapt her novel into a stage production. As I worked on the adaptation, my life took an unexpected turn. My father and mother both were hospitalized. It is only with the brilliant mind and help of Leah Lopez that this was finished on time. With her gift of script writing I am eternally thankful for the work she did in getting this fantastic adaptation done. The cast of this show was absolutely undaunted in the tasks that lay before them. Like Maddix Parker, we all found that we could count on our friends as we rehearsed. The personalities they developed for each character makes each scene that they are in powerful and memorable. I hope you enjoy this show as much as I did directing it. Everyone who has volunteered or signed up for this journey has really gone above and beyond their role, because of that this show will be unforgettable to me. I wanted to thank Ms. Christensen, Ms. Fink; this could not have been done without you. They have been wonderful partners in this journey, and each have guided me and the cast with many words of wisdom over the past 2.5 months. Thanks to the cast, crew and parent volunteers who worked hours and hours making this the best show. Thank you to Stethia Criner who helped slay the 7 headed thunderbirds of costuming this show. Thanks to Jason Christ, Mike Wierman, and the PTA, for their unending support. I would also like say a huge THANK YOU to my wife DeLynn, for supporting me through this production. My daughter Isa for wonderful logo and artistic guidance. for supporting me through this production. And lastly, thank you to my mother and father who introduced me and raised me in the world of stage and visual arts. I would like to dedicate this show to my father who I lost in August. Without his influence in my life this program would never had existed. My love and joy of performing with my parents onstage from the age of 4 is what created magical memories in my life. It was with that goal that I hoped to do so for a new generation of children in the Paddock Community. I am forever touched and inspired by his love and support. I love you Dad. Miss Christensen is thrilled to be a part of her second Paddock production. At an early age, Miss Christensen grew a love for theater, being involved in her school choirs, plays, musicals, speech, and drama clubs. She is so excited to continue this passion into her teaching career!
Ms. Fink – Assistant Director Miss Fink has been a part of theatre since she was in 4th grade - as a student! This is her first time assisting with a show at Paddock, which has fulfilled her lifelong dream of directing as an elementary teacher. She is so unbelievably proud of the hard work and dedication of each and every student in this show. Break a leg everyone!
