No Retirement Planned for Eighty-Year Old Tractor By Les Kletke
Milton Reimer readily acknowledged that his connection to his W 4 McCormick is sentimental. It was the tractor he learned to drive on, was restored by his Dad, and now he can complete the process. The tractor has every right to have a special place in his heart. Today the tractor that was once ‘the big tractor’ on his Dad’s farm is relegated to yard duty and even that has restrictions. It is not equipped with a 3-pt hitch so it cannot handle a blade or other yard tools. Reimer’s father had a W 4 and added a second tractor W 4 Super to the farm lineup. He said that 3 sons farming with their Dad provided lots of operators. It is estimated that McCormick built 28,784 of the W 4s starting in the 1940s before upgrading to the Super in 1953. Reimer’s tractor was built the following year. “It was the big tractor on the farm,” he said fondly. “We used it on the side rake and I remember doing some plowing with it. That was with a 2 bottom plow.” At the time it was built the tractor carried several name plates beginning with McCormick Deering, then McCormick and finally adding the International name. It is rated at 23 hp on the draw bar and 30 on the pto but some of the later models developed up to 30 hp on the draw bar. Reimer said that his father did some restoration work by having the main body of the tractor sand blasted and re-painted while he has continued the sandblasting and painting the rims.

Today the tractor is relegated to yard chores on the farm at Blumenort and the occasional parade. Reimer did drive the tractor in the Tractor Trek fundraiser earlier this year but with COVID-19 causing the cancellation of many communities’ events it has not left the yard for any parades. He said the tractor was in solid condition before beginning the second restoration. “It was mostly minor things,” he said. “I did some work on the starter and tightened up the steering. I replaced a few small things and put new rubber on it after I had the wheels painted.” For Reimer it is a matter of keeping the tractor in good condition while still using it around the yard for small chores. He said that there is no intention of parking it and forgetting about his time learning to drive on the W 4 Super.
