Tradition and Great Employees are Key to Success for Load Line

Cruisin’ for Deals

By Harry Siemens Recently at Ag Days in Brandon Chris Friesen of Load Line Manufacturing in Winkler spoke about their products and sales, but more importantly about the legacy his father left behind to help take the business to the next level. Jake Friesen, who passed away November 9, 2012, purchased the company, which manufactures and sells boxes, trailers, and trucks for transporting grain and gravel in 1988. Under his ownership, the number of people employed by Load Line grew from six to around 90. Friesen, the youngest of three brothers in the business talked first about the legacy his father, Jake left. “The thing with him is he taught us all very well. He had excellent morals and stuff, and the family was significant to him, as was his business,” he said. “It’s special when you can get together and work along with my two brothers and a brother-in-law. We work together every day, eight hours a day. It works well because of the way he taught us and brought us up. Christian faith was a big thing for us, and that’s helped us a long way in business, and honesty. Honesty is the big thing.”

“...we try to treat our employees like family. We have get-togethers, picnics, and stuff like that. We involve everyone, especially our children. Everybody’s involved, and that’s how Jake Sr., my Dad always had it, and that’s a tradition that we’re carrying on.” Friesen started working in 2007 the first day out of high school in the back of the shop, moving up now into the office and sales. He recounts it as a family thing to do, working odd jobs, sweeping the floor and up from there. Friesen said planning is vital while working on day-to-day things, but they try to stay one-step ahead of everybody else. They have long-term plans in the works to grow bigger, hire more employees, expand and renovate buildings. He said 2018 is off to a great start. He unashamedly said aside from the great teachings and example set by their father, good employees are the other key to the company’s success. “We have, I would say, the best employees. If you don’t have good employees, your business won’t do well. It’s a guarantee. And we try to treat our employees like family. We have get-togethers, picnics, and stuff like that. We involve everyone, especially our children. Everybody’s involved, and that’s how Jake Sr., my Dad always had it, and that’s a tradition that we’re carrying on.” Load Line not only manufactures grain boxes and hopper trailers they offer a full line of gravel products. “We make a lot of truck sales, servicing, body shop work, pretty much has to do with the heavy side of things in trucks and trailers, farming, construction,” said Friesen. “We have a few people, all over North America, who look after securing trucks for resale. We usually try to buy fleets, better maintained, and a lot of times get service records out of them. Once done on the highway, we take them in, take off the sleeper, and do some framework, put on a grain or gravel box, and give them another life.” For example, if a farmer is looking for a specific truck, Load Line can custom build it for him. “If we don’t have the exact truck in the yard or the size of grain box he wants or grain trailer, we can custom build to any size, colour, shape, pretty much anything,” he said.
