By Les Kletke Barrie Reimer readily acknowledges he did little work in restoring his Case Model S tractor. “I bought it about a week before the tractor trek,” said Reimer who drove it in the Eastern Tractor Trek earlier this summer. “I have been a member of the South East Implement club for a while and I have concentrated on garden tractors, but we have an annual event that involves some plowing and I thought I would like to be a part of that. There is not much there for garden tractors.” When a member of the club offered him the Case tractor he jumped at the chance. His first venture was in the Tractor Trek and he was also in the Richer parade this year, harvest kept him from the Grunthal parade or it would have completed the Triple Crown for him. It was only after he bought the tractor that he found he had a connection to the model. “My grandfather had one like it and talking to my uncles it must have been a very similar tractor,” he said. Case built the model from 1941 to 51 and it was rated 16 horsepower on the drawbar and 21 hp on the belt. The company called it a two bottom plow tractor. “I have access to a plow for this fall but I am looking for a plow from that vintage that would fit the tractor that I could use at our event in fall,” he said. “It would have to be a two bottom 14-inch plow.” Reimer who lives in
Barrie Reimer has been collecting garden tractors but wanted a field size tractor so when this one came available he jumped at it. Mitchell said he is not particularly brand loyal and his intention is to have a garden tractor with the name plate of each of the tractor manufacturers of the time. He is doing well on his collection but has run into a challenge looking for a Minneapolis Moline and an Oliver. “Most companies put their name on a tractor that was built by other manufacturers,” he noted. “Ford was built by Jacobson and so on.” Most were powered by engines built by the manufacturers of the day and Briggs and Straton, Koehler and Tecumseh are used in many of the tractors. His line up does include Allis Chalmers, John Deere, Massey Ferguson, and Cub Cadet (International Harvester). While he is continuing his search for garden tractors he is enjoying having a field size tractor and has taken it on a few road trips for ice cream and rides for the grandchildren.
