Morley Walker of Plumas had an amazing of seven sets of twins in his Simmental herd this fall with 11 surviving calves. The cows are Red Simmental bred to Black Simmental bulls. Currently they are feeding 4 of the calves as the mothers can not produce enough milk for both.
Manitoba’s Rural Women’s Day Holding Two Events
Manitoba Rural Women’s Day is scheduled for October 15 in Rivers and on October 29 in Dugald. To register and learn more go to mbwi.ca and join us for Manitoba rural women day. In this, the Year of the PULSE, Winnipeg will be host to the 10th Canadian Pulse Research Workshop. The workshop includes sessions on Genetics and Plant Breeding, Agronomy and Pathology, Environment and Nutrition and Food. The workshop will be held at the Delta Hotel in Winnipeg October 25-28. The Forks is All About the Big Manitoba Honey Show The Annual Manitoba Honey Show will be held from September 30 to October 2 at The Forks Market in the Annex off of the Centre Court. The theme for this year’s honey show will be “Local Honey is Better Honey”, showcasing the versatility and the many varieties of Manitoba Honey available to the local consumer. Many other events are also scheduled over the weekend. There will be a static display of beekeeping equipment, a display of honey in its many forms. A live honeybee observation hive for the public to get a safe and up close look of our favorite pollinator. There will also be sampling of a variety of fine Manitoba honey in its many forms, including jams, jellies and spreads. Beekeepers from the prairie provinces will be entering their best honey in nine different competition classes and posters and photography related to beekeeping will be on display. The annual photo contest will be in full swing, displaying all of our members’ entries for the public to view. There will be an opportunity to taste some of the honey produced by local beekeepers, and to purchase fresh natural honey, honey comb, creamed honey as well as honey jams like strawberry, lemon, cherry or blueberry. Honey offered for sale this year will range in taste and flavor from the light Clover to the dark Buckwheat. Other honeys for sale will be Basswood, Canola, Dandelion, Sunflower and Wildflower. Part of a working hive, enclosed in glass will be on display with beekeepers nearby to answer questions. The Annual Honey Show is sponsored by the Manitoba Beekeepers’ Association and is organized by the local Winnipeg Red River Apiarists’ Association. Come and see the many ways that honey is used as nature’s natural sweetener in food and industry. Enjoy Manitoba honey everyday.
