Manitoba’s Thanksgiving Storm Puts Cattle Producers in a Tight Spot

At least a foot of heavy, wet snow and freezing rain combined with strong winds took down thousands of hydro poles and electric fences in the Interlake Photos by Tom Teichroeb cattle country of Manitoba.

By Harry Siemens Tom Teichroeb, his wife Michelle and their two daughters have a 400 cowcalf ranch near Langruth. Teichroeb is President of the Manitoba Beef Producers (MBP) representing Manitoba on the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association. Due to the Thanksgiving weekend storm there was no electricity or land line

available for communication. The only communication Teichroeb and family had, was texting by cell phone. “Our hydro is down and will be for the next week or so. I have no internet and no landline, only have text for now. There are over 200 hydro poles down in our area,” was Teichroeb’s first response via text mes-

sages amid the Thanksgiving Weekend early snowstorm on October 11. “It’s a disaster, to say the least. Over a foot [of snow], but we had so much freezing rain, hard to say how much snow would have accumulated otherwise.” When asked what the most immediate problem was for his ranch, he said that the inability to get corn silage

because they needed it now. “That’s just one element. Damaged fence lines and other infrastructure,” said Teichroeb. “We were counting on that corn for the third week of October. So many other dynamics, too many to text.” Fast forward to October 17, Thursday morning once the power came back on. Continued on Page 2...
