Studies Support Year-Round Shipping Through Churchill By Harry Siemens The governments of Canada and Manitoba, alongside the Arctic Gateway Group, are welcoming new research confirming the feasibility of year-round shipping from the Port of Churchill using existing ice-class vessels. The studies also indicate that changing sea-ice conditions are expected to make marine access increasingly favourable over the coming decades. international trading relationships and reduce Canada’s dependence on the United States. For Prairie agriculture, an expanded shipping season could provide another route for moving grain and other commodities to overseas markets. However, technical navigation capability does not by itself establish a commercially viable year-round transportation corridor. The port, railway and supporting infrastructure would require sufficient capacity and reliability. Shippers would also need competitive costs, dependable schedules and adequate freight volumes. Chartrand said the studies will improve understanding of the infrastructure, operational, technical and economic considerations involved in developing the port and corridor. The University of Manitoba study found that Churchill’s navigable shipping season has lengthened significantly over

recent decades. Researchers project that changing seaice conditions will continue expanding marine access through Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait during this century. Fednav examined 10 years of Canadian ice charts, satellite imagery and regulatory requirements. Its analysis found that existing ice-class vessel designs could support yearround navigation without icebreaker assistance. Preliminary findings from the Arctic Research Foundation identified opportunities involving northern resupply, resource exports, Indigenous economic participation, supply chains and Canadian Arctic sovereignty. Federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said reliable transportation networks help connect northern communities while supporting trade and economic growth. Continued on page 3...
