RCC Board Member Recognized at AGM

The Richer Community Club recognized board member Louise Sabot for all the volunteer hours she has committed over the past decade.

While Louise decided to take a step back from her duties on the executive, she is remaining on the board as a director.

Most board members were in awe of the work she put in to keep the rest of them organized and motivated. As past secretary of the RCC, chair of the Chase the Ace committee, a member of the rodeo committee, Louise not only pitched in where needed, but took the lead many projects. She is considered a versatile member and is not one to back away when it comes to improving our community.

Music by Country Star Band, Farm Dog hosting Metis culture foods, cake, and popcorn. There will be self tours along with the Dawson Trail Art display, renewal of memberships, 50/50 tickets, T-shirts for sale and much more.

EnRicher deadline: Monday, May 30 is the deadline for June 2022 submissions for the EnRicher.

Richer “Communities in Bloom”

This is the first in what is hoped to be a monthly newsletter that will keep you informed of what Richer Communities in Bloom (CiB) is doing in our town.

This is our second year, and while we are taking baby steps, CiB has a long term focus. Over the years believe the community will see the benefits.

We are concentrated only within the LUD of Richer, so apologies to nearby neighbours who don’t directly benefit, but there are still opportunities for volunteering, education, and community involvement.

Last month, CiB Richer put out a call for interest in a community garden. Unfortunately, there was not enough to put in the effort required. This is still considered a worthwhile endeavour, and will remain on the back burner. As food prices increase, and the community grows, it may become more desirable. If this does feel like an opportunity that passed you by, let us know.

We are also still looking for volunteers to sit on the Richer CiB committee. Of special interest would be someone who works in, or has knowledge of, waste management and recycling. CiB is not all about flowers, you know. Heritage, tidiness, environment, forestry, landscape, and most important, community are other facets we can work on.

FREE TREE OPPORTUNITY!

Now for the new project! There is a young forest growing on a few acres along Southwest Drive. Several of these beautiful young

trees are, unfortunately, growing beneath the power line and will not live the life they deserve in the end. Do you need a tree in your yard? On Saturday, May 14, CiB Richer will have an arborist on site from 1-3 pm. Not only might you get a tree, you will get the instruction on how to make sure your tree thrives in its new environment. There is one caveat... you will need to register, and the arborist will want to inspect the site you intend to plant the tree. Planning is important, and a hole should be waiting for the tree when it is removed. Of course, it won’t be beneath a power line, but there are other things to consider. Please call anytime ahead of the date, and we’ll let you know if there is a good fit.

Now is the time to prune your fruit trees while they are still dormant. Early spring is the best time to prune as you can see the architecture of the tree and it has the best chance to heal from its pruning cuts. Please don’t prune elm until the end of August.

There are future plans to hold seminars in pruning, gardening, etc. through CiB Richer, so stay tuned for that.

Crib News

The Richer Crib Club met for the first time in more than two years with 8 in attendance.

There would have been more if the weather services hadn’t been predicting the “storm of the century”, which caused some of our members who live a bit further away to stay at home and which didn’t materialize until the wee hours of the night. Our winners of the evening were Rochelle Anderson in first place, Paul Saindon in second and Rick Betts in third. Yours truly (Claire Logan) took the Booby prize, as usual, and Norm Burnell won the 50/50. Although we only had two tables, we had a good time together, and it was really great seeing friends I hadn’t seen in ages!

Our next tournament will be on May 10th, no partner required, and entry is still only $5, so I’m hoping we will see more of our old friends then.

Richer Crib Club meets… May 10, June 14, July 12 & Aug 9.

Monday Night Bingos are Back!

Many group activities are now back up and running and the SPMF Bingo held on Monday evenings at the Richer Young at Hearts Club is no exception.

Doors open at 5:30 pm and kicks off with the Earlybirds at 6:30 pm. This is followed by Regular Bingo at 6:50 pm. For info you can call Doreen at 204-422-5243.

Local Yoga Classes Starting Soon!

Local Yoga Classes are just waiting for the ground to warm up. They have a tentative start date of May 11. For more information see the Facebook page @yoginature or contact Patricia by email yoginature@hotmail. com phone or text 204-290-5336.

Richer classes will be weekly on Wednesdays from 8-9 pm and biweekly until June on Saturdays from 7:30-8:30 pm.

WHERE ARE MY TAXES GOING? TAX… it’s a nasty word to mention, but you don’t have to go far to any store or fuel station to see the results of INFLATION! Mortgage rates are now rising and our dollars aren’t buying as much as they used to. It’s a fair question to ask “what can my municipality do to help?”

On April 27th the RM of Ste Anne passed 3rd reading for its 2022 financial plan and while putting this plan together, careful thought and consideration was given to our nemesis being inflation. It’s normal to see that if costs go up that taxes usually follow.

Many hours were spent looking at ways to ease the burden for the rate payer and not be a contributor to the cost of living increases we are witnessing right now.

The result is a slight decrease to both the Rural and LUD mill rates for this year. I would like to highlight that with hard work the LUD mill rate has been frozen or decreased for the 12th year in a row.

The General at Large mill rate that is shared among all residents did however see a slight increase but the increase we managed to keep well below the cost of living increase as reported by the Central Bank of Canada.

What else can our municipality do for its residents to help battle inflation and where are our taxes going to help the cause? We need to keep this conversation going at all levels of government.

Your local government has been hard at work and have included other items in this year’s budget

to help with the fight.

The RM of Ste Anne is participating in a feasibility study for community transportation and money has been put aside for a share and ride location. The feasibility study is in conjunction with other municipalities including Steinbach and we will review possibilities such as busing to the City of Winnipeg. Research has shown that 90% of workers in the RM of Ste Anne leave the municipality for work and 70% completely leave the region.

The obvious conclusion from residents needed to work outside our communities is the municipality is lacking in its economic development. I am pleased to share with residents that this has become a topic in council during this term. Steps have started to be put in place to investigate adding an industrial park to attract

high paying, good quality jobs to the RM of Ste Anne. We have started an economic development reserve and have plans to create seed money for a development corporation at no cost to the rate payer.

Another item worth mentioning is the RM of Ste Anne also plans to participate in a feasibility study for sewer to allow for infill development in already designated settlement areas rather than force developers to subdivide into larger acreage lots to accommodate a tank and field system.

The list does go on! “We are all in this together”. As your councilor, I can ensure that the team is trying our best to do our part.

The Richer Dawson Trail Museum is seeking a self-motivated student between the ages of 15 and 30 years, to work as a full- time summer student.

Student must be enrolled in a full-time secondary or post-secondary school program with intent to return to school on a full time basis in fall of 2022-2023. Student must be legally entitled to work in Canada. A valid Manitoba Drivers Licence is essential.

The summer student employment opportunity is in partnership with the MB. Green Team Program.

Starting July 5th to August 27th 2022, 40 hours per week and must be available to work some Saturdays.

- Salary is $11.95 per hour.

- Student would be working under the direction of the Dawson Trail Museum Committee.

Young at Hearts Dinner & Dances The Young at Heart first Dinner and Dance in two years that was scheduled for Saturday, April 16th, was cancelled due to weather.

Unfortunately the May Dinner and Dance has also been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict. Regular dinners will take place as follows: June 18 with the Mosaics July 16 with Dennis Nykoliation August 20 with the Gemstars September 17 with the Mosaics October 15 with By Request November 19 with the Gemstars Doors open at 4:30 pm with dinner at 6 pm and dancing until 11 pm. Thank You to Our Youth!

On behalf of the Richer Métis Local we would love to thank our students for coming out to shovel for our seniors and disabled person this winter.These kids worked hard at some time with heavy snow, to make sure the path for our seniors were cleared. This program was a excellent example on how even though they were paid, these kids made a effort in the cold to come out and help our seniors. Great job.

PARK is OPEN, but Gates Closed to Vehicles Due to the large amount of moisture and standing water, the gates to the Dawson Trail Park are temporarily closed to vehicle traffic. We would like to avoid damage from vehicles driving over the grass and other soft areas. Parking is available at the gate entrance and we ask visitors to walk into the park. This is temporary until it dries up a bit.
