Community Garden Ramping Up for Spring

The new Richer Friendship Community Garden located behind the Richer Young at Hearts Hall is gearing up quickly for spring planting.

The Richer Community Club, the Richer Recreation Committee, the Young at Hearts Club, the Ste Anne Food Bank and others came together to create the Richer Friendship Community Garden.

The goal of the Community Garden is to provide a welcoming and safe space for us to come together to experience the joy of gardening!

It does not matter whether you are a beginner or an experienced gardener, joining together helps us all create this space into something the community can be proud of. Everyone of all ages is welcomed.

Becoming involved with the project allows you an area to grow your own food, including some space reserved for the food bank. All are welcome!

Along with FREE plot and raised garden bed registration, this Spring we will also be offering FREE seeds, starter plants and more to those who register. Additionally, we hope to have a summer student onsite to assist those who require help with their plots.

If anyone is interested in a garden plot or would like to try a 4’x4’ raised garden planter, continued on next page...

Municipal Board Receives Annexation Proposal from Ste. Anne Municipalities

The Municipal Board of Manitoba has announced it has received a formal annexation proposal jointly submitted by the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne and the Town of Ste. Anne.

The proposal, submitted under Section 20(1) of The Municipal Act, seeks to transfer a portion of land from the rural municipality to the town. The municipalities have reportedly spent the past year negotiating the terms of the agreement privately.

The lands identified for annexation are located directly north of the town and cover approximately 215.2 hectares (531.9 acres). Due to the region’s characteristic long, narrow river lot layout, only portions of certain properties would be annexed, leaving the remaining sections under the jurisdiction of the rural municipality.

In total, the affected area includes 21 properties owned by 11 individual landowners, along with four additional owners who each hold multiple parcels.

A map outlining the proposed annexation area was included in the submission. After reviewing the proposal, the Municipal Board indicated there appears to be general agreement between the parties involved.

However, the Board has issued a public notice outlining the next steps in the process. Unless at least 25 eligible voters from the affected municipalities submit formal objections by April 24, 2026, the Board will proceed with making its recommendation to the provincial Minister of Indigenous and Municipal Relations without holding a public hearing.

Objections must be filed with the Municipal Board at its Winnipeg office and addressed to the Board’s secretary, Erin Wills.

Copies of the full proposal have been made available for public review at both municipal offices, as well as at the Municipal Board’s office in Winnipeg.

Richer Community Club Announces

$2,000 in Bursaries

The Richer Community Club has announced the return of the Brent Wery Memorial Bursary, offering financial support to local students pursuing post-secondary education.

The club will award up to two bursaries valued at $1,000 each to graduating students who exemplify the values and spirit of the Richer community. The award recognizes not only academic commitment, but also meaningful contributions to both school life and the broader community.

According to the guidelines, the Brent Wery Memorial Bursary is intended for students who demonstrate dedication to learning, maintain a minimum academic average of 65 per cent—or show consistent academic improvement—and exhibit respectful behavior toward peers, educators, and community members. Volunteerism is also a key component, with applicants expected to have made positive contributions either within their school or in the wider community.

Eligible candidates must be current students and residents who identify as part of the Richer community, though they are not required to live strictly within town boundaries. Applicants must also plan to continue their education in the upcoming academic year through college, university, or another recognized post-secondary institution or training program.

To apply, students are required to submit a brief autobiography outlining their qualifications and community involvement, along with a character reference from an educator or supervisor familiar with their school or volunteer activities.

The deadline for applications is April 30, 2026 and students are encouraged to speak to their school administration for information or assistance in applying.

The bursary continues to serve as a tribute to Brent Wery by supporting youth who reflect the values of community engagement, respect, and a commitment to personal growth.
