Ste. Anne’s Jocelyne Larocque Among 12 Manitobans Named to Order of Manitoba Ste. Anne native Jocelyne Larocque is among 12 Manitobans selected to receive the Order of Manitoba, the province’s highest honour recognizing outstanding achievement and service. The recipients, drawn from a wide range of fields including athletics, the arts, science, medicine and community leadership, will be formally invested during a ceremony scheduled for July 16 at the Manitoba Legislative Building. Established in 1999, the Order of Manitoba recognizes individuals whose accomplishments have enriched the social, cultural or economic well-being of the province and its residents. Appointments are made by the chancellor of the order, based on recommendations from an advisory council. Lieutenant-Governor Anita Neville, who serves as chancellor, said this year’s recipients reflect the diversity and excellence found across the province. “The 12 exceptional Manitobans being inducted into the Order of Manitoba this year epitomize what makes Manitoba so special,” Neville said. “From world-class athletes and gifted musicians to compassionate community leaders and brilliant medical and scientific minds,

one of the most accomplished defenders in Canadian women’s hockey. She currently serves as alternate captain of the Ottawa Charge in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). A three-time Olympic medalist, Larocque was selected second overall in the 2023 PWHL Draft and has built a reputation as a standout defender at the

professional level. She also holds the distinction of being the first Indigenous woman to compete in ice hockey at the Winter Olympics, marking a historic milestone in the sport. The investiture ceremony to take place July 16 at the Manitoba Legislative Building will formally recognize Larocque and the other recipients for their contributions to Manitoba and beyond.

RM of Piney Approves Cannabis Retail Addition at Sprague Grocery Store Council for the RM of Piney has approved a conditional use application and variance request allowing retail cannabis sales to be added to an existing grocery store in Sprague. The resolution was approved during the municipality’s May 12 council meeting and applies to Carl and Kay’s, located at 2091 Provincial Road 308 in Sprague. Under the resolution, council approved the conditional use required for the addition of retail cannabis sales within the existing business. Council also approved a variance order related to the property requirements for the development. The variance reduces the minimum required property size from two acres to 1.25 acres and reduces the required property width from 200 feet to 162 feet. According to the resolution, the municipality determined the proposed cannabis retail addition complies with both federal and provincial regulations governing cannabis sales. The approval clears the way for the business to proceed with plans to incorporate cannabis retail operations into the existing grocery store. Cannabis retail operations in Manitoba are subject to provincial licensing requirements and regulatory oversight.
