Narth Highlights Affordability, Infrastructure Advocacy Following Spring Legislative Session

By Dan Guetre La Verendrye MLA Konrad Narth says affordability, economic growth, infrastructure, and rural concerns remained key priorities during the spring session of the Manitoba Legislature.

The Legislature concluded its sitting on Monday following a week of late-night sessions and negotiations. Narth said the Progressive Conservative opposition entered the session focused on what he described as the need for government action on rising costs and financial pressures facing Manitobans.

“Under Wab Kinew and the NDP, the cost of living continues to rise, and too many families are struggling to make ends meet,” said Narth.

Narth criticized the provincial government’s approach to removing taxes from groceries, arguing that most grocery items are already exempt from provincial sales tax and that the savings would be minimal for families.

He said the Progressive Conservatives proposed a different approach through an increase to Manitoba’s Basic Income Exemption to $30,000, which would mean Manitobans would not pay provincial income tax on the first $30,000 they earn.

The proposal was voted down by the NDP government. Narth said the Progressive Conservatives remain committed to implementing the policy if they form government in the future.

The MLA also discussed his opposition to Bill 21, legislation that would expand government oversight of water sources, including some shared wells.

Narth said rural Manitobans have raised concerns about the potential impact on property owners and public water access. He credited residents, municipalities, agricultural organizations, and other stakeholders with helping delay the legislation while raising questions about its impacts.

“We will continue holding the government accountable on this issue,” said Narth.

During the session, Narth said the Progressive Conservative caucus also proposed expanding the role of nurse practitioners in healthcare and introduced a resolution aimed at better protecting homeowners who act in self-defence against an intruder.

“As always, my priority remains the same: ensuring the voices of southeastern Manitobans are heard at the Legislature,” said Narth.

Looking ahead to the summer, Narth said he plans to continue meeting with residents across the region and advocating for policies he believes will support families, agriculture, economic growth, and rural communities.

Lagassé Renews Call for Safety Improvements at Highway 12 and PR 210 Intersection Following another serious collision at the intersection of Highway 12 and Provincial Road 210, Dawson Trail MLA Bob Lagassé is renewing his call for continued action to improve safety at the busy southeastern Manitoba intersection.

The recent collision resulted in five people being injured and has again raised concerns from residents, commuters, municipal leaders, and local businesses about safety at the intersection.

“My thoughts are with everyone involved in this latest accident, and I wish those injured a full and speedy recovery,” said Lagassé. “Incidents like this are difficult for the families involved and for the entire community.”

Lagassé said the intersection has been the location of multiple collisions over the years and remains an ongoing concern for those who travel the route regularly.

He noted that he has previously advocated for improvements at the intersection and has been seeking commitments and timelines for future work.

“At the same time, I believe residents would welcome any opportunities to advance those im-

provements or consider additional measures that could enhance safety in the interim,” Lagassé said.

Highway 12 serves as a major transportation route through southeastern Manitoba, connecting growing communities and supporting significant local traffic.

Lagassé said increasing traffic volumes have made improvements at the Highway 12 and PR 210 intersection an important priority.

“People who travel this route every day want reassurance that every possible step is being taken to improve safety,” he said. “This is not a partisan issue. It is about protecting families, supporting our growing communities, and ensuring everyone can travel safely.”

Lagassé added that he remains committed to working with government officials and other stakeholders to move safety improvements forward.

“I remain committed to working with all parties to help move this project forward and to ensure the concerns of local residents continue to be heard,” he said.

RM of Ste. Anne Reconsiders Proposed Recycling Depot Following Public Feedback

By Dan Guetre The Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne is taking another look at its plans to expand recycling services after council decided not to proceed with a proposed recycling collection depot location following a public hearing that drew significant community opposition.

The public hearing, hosted by the RM of Ste. Anne, was held as part of the regular municipal process for considering a project of this nature. The proposed depot would have been located across the Trans Canada Highway from Paradise Village, an area where a number of residents raised concerns about the project.

“If the preliminary work had shown the site to be unsuitable we wouldn’t have needed the hearing,” he said. “I am the guy that always wants all the information I can get before I make a decision. So, do I think doing the work was a mistake? No. Should we have communicated what we were doing to the local area residents? Canada – Glorious and Free It was 159 years ago, on July 1, 1867, that Confederation formally united the provinces and set Canada on its path to nationhood. Canada became a nation, set on the path toward unity, on values that promised a future with a vision to be glorious and free. Built on values such as human dignity, equality, the importance of community, and of a hard day’s work set the tone for what Canada would become. Our beautiful country was destined to develop into a nation with the second-largest land mass in the world, sprawling from sea to sea, echoing the words of Psalm 72:8. Thanks to the Fathers of Confederation, the dream of uniting the country from east to west was realized.

That early vision carried generations of Canadians to believe this country could unfold into something truly extraordinary.

As Sir John A. Macdonald famously said, “We are a great country, and shall become one of the greatest in the universe if we preserve it.”

The vision was of a people who believed in Canada, worked for Canada, and loved Canada.

Contrary to what some political voices have recently said, Canada was not founded as a secular nation. Canada’s legal, constitutional, parliamentary, and cultural foundations were deeply shaped by the Christian faith.

In previous columns, I have noted how 25 Bible verses are embedded in the architecture

throughout our Parliament Buildings. And as recently as 1982, the Preamble to the Constitution Act introduced the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms with the words: “Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law.” These foundational attributes contributed to the emerging character of our nation.

Our ancestors built this country on the ideals of peace, order, and good government. They cleared forests, cultivated the land, built communities, defended our borders, and raised families under the emblem of the maple leaf and hard-earned freedom.

From the earliest routes carved through forests and waterways

to the moment of Confederation and beyond, Canada was shaped by dreams that outlasted doubt.

Canada’s past included sacrifice, reconciliation, compromise, collaboration, achievement, and a growing confidence on the world stage. Hard work produced thriving farms carved from rocky soil, and cities that endured our harsh winters. Our country was built by people who turned distance into connection and hardship into possibilities.

Canada’s vision became reality through intentionality, effort, and perseverance. We are indebted to those who came before us and worked the land, shaped our laws, and built our communities across mountains, prairies, and coastlines.

And that is the task that falls to us today: not only to inherit this vision and this country, but to defend it, strengthen it, and carry it forward for future generations.

It’s not about cancelling history—it’s about learning from it.

It’s not about imposing cultural subjectivity onto previous generations—but humbly looking for what was good for inspiration and applying the lessons we learn so as not to repeat where we erred.

Canada Day is a time to remember our history, thank those who came before us, and resolve to give our best for the future before us.

Narth Apologizes Following Legislature Exchange Over French Language Use La Vérendrye MLA Konrad Narth issued a formal apology following an exchange in the Manitoba Legislature that raised concerns over members’ rights to speak French during proceedings.

The incident occurred on the final day of the spring sitting, when the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly ruled on a point of order regarding members’ constitutional right to use French in the Legislature.

The Speaker stated that it was “just plain wrong” for Narth to dispute the right of members to speak French during Question Period and said the comments required an apology.

“The Speaker’s ruling shows the PCs are failing French-speaking Manitobans,” said Loiselle. “The PCs must respect our bilingual institutions and protect all Manitobans’ rights to communicate in both official languages.”

Sio Silica Project Draws Renewed Attention Following G7 Announcement and Continued Environmental Debate

By Dan Guetre The proposed Sio Silica project in southeastern Manitoba is once again drawing attention following announcements made at the 2026 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Évian, France, where the Government of Canada highlighted new partnerships aimed at strengthening critical mineral supply chains.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada had secured several new partnerships through the Critical Minerals Resilience and Production Alliance, including Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) involving Sio Silica Corporation, Germany-based RCT Solutions, and U.S.-based NanoXSolar.

The agreements are intended to support Sio Silica’s high-purity silica project in southeastern Manitoba and explore the development of a fully integrated solar manufacturing hub in Manitoba involving industry and Indigenous partners, including the Southern Chiefs’ Organization.

According to Sio Silica, the

partnerships represent a step toward establishing secure North American and European supply chains for high-purity silica, a material used in industries including solar energy, semiconductors, batteries, advanced manufacturing, and defence technologies.

“These partnerships demonstrate the global significance of Manitoba’s high-purity silica resource and the role it can play in strengthening Canada’s critical minerals strategy,” said Carla Devlin, President of Sio Silica.

The company said the proposed project could attract significant investment, create skilled employment opportunities, increase Indigenous economic participation, and contribute to Canada’s clean technology supply chain.

The announcement has also renewed debate among environmental advocates and some residents who continue to raise concerns about the project.

The organization Our Line in the Sand Manitoba issued a statement questioning the an-

nouncement, arguing that the newly announced partnerships appear similar to previous agreements involving Sio Silica and RCT Solutions.

The group raised concerns regarding whether the silica resource identified by Sio Silica meets technical requirements for producing materials such as silicon used in advanced manufacturing. It cited research and technical reports questioning whether certain forms of silica sand are suitable for specific refining processes.

The organization also questioned the environmental assessment process, including whether sufficient evidence has been provided regarding the quality of the resource, groundwater impacts, and potential risks associated with the project.

He also raised concerns about the possible mobilization of uranium and the potential for

increased radon exposure in nearby homes, asking what assessments have been completed and whether mitigation measures would be available if elevated levels were detected.

Sio Silica has maintained that the project represents an opportunity to develop a critical minerals resource in Manitoba while supporting clean energy manufacturing and economic growth.

The company said collaboration between government, industry, and Indigenous partners is intended to create longterm economic benefits while strengthening Canada’s role in global supply chains.

The proposed project continues through the regulatory review process, with supporters highlighting its economic potential and critics calling for additional information and further examination of environmental concerns.

Longer days and warmer weather bring increased activity on highways, gravel roads, recreational trails, and throughout local communities.

“Summer is an excellent time to enjoy everything our region has to offer,” said Reimer, noting that many residents and visitors will be heading to destinations such as Buffalo Point, cottages, campgrounds, and area trails.

With more vehicles on local roads, the Sprague RCMP are encouraging everyone to plan ahead and make responsible choices while travelling.

Drivers are reminded to never operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs, always wear seatbelts, and ensure children are properly secured in appropriate car seats.

For those operating off-road vehicles and ATVs, police emphasize that helmets can

save lives. Riders are encouraged to operate responsibly, remain on designated trails where applicable, and ensure younger riders are properly supervised.

RCMP are also reminding residents to be aware of seasonal scams that often increase during the busy summer months. Fraudsters may attempt to take advantage of people through online marketplace scams, phishing emails, and phone calls claiming to represent government agencies.

Police advise residents to take time to verify suspicious requests before providing personal information or sending money.

The summer season can also bring increased wildfire risks, particularly during hot and dry conditions. Residents are reminded to follow local fire restrictions, fully extinguish campfires, and report any signs of wildfire as soon as possible.

“The RM of Piney is a great place to live, work, and enjoy the outdoors,” said Reimer.

Foraging for Fungi

By Laura Reeves I remember years ago people discounting mushrooms as a “nothing” food. Aside from their flavours and textures they were purportedly devoid of food value. It seemed weird to me - that an organism that spends its days breaking down other organisms into their constituent parts would contain none of those constituents, or that those constituents would have little or no nutritional value to humans.

This is far from the case today. Mushrooms are now revered for both their nutritional and medicinal profiles. Research has found them to be high in protein (some are more than 30% protein) complex carbohydrates, potassium, fiber and antioxidants. They contain good quantities of some B vitamins, the precursor of vitamin D2, and several essential minerals that are important for immune function and anti-oxidant production. Medicinally speaking, mushrooms, or compounds isolated from mushrooms, are capable of balancing hormones, causing tumour regression, and treating obesity, adult-onset type 2 diabetes and immune disorders, among other things.

Wild mushrooms are especially known for improving mental and physical health - without so much as laying a finger on them. Just the sight of a morel or chanterelle will cause any mushroom hunter to react with child-like glee - their spirit soaring and their mind forgetting that perhaps, only seconds before, they were incapable of running or skipping.

The fear of being poisoned by wild mushrooms is enough to prevent many people from consuming them. However, there are a some easy-to-identify species that are a great starting point for those dipping their toe into the world of edible wild mushrooms.

Morels (aka smorzhee) These are the first mushrooms on foragers’ hit lists. These delectable fungi are the perfect blend of flavour and texture. One might consider them ugly - their caps comprised of a series of ridges and pits. Black morels (Morchella elata) appear when dandelions start blooming and are mostly found in deciduous woodlands.

Golden morels (Morchella esculenta) come out as black morel season is fading and are fond of

open areas and sandy soil, even popping out of gravel driveways! Golden morels mark the end of morel season.

Though there are two poisonous, and potentially deadly, morel look-alikes – the early morel and false morel - both are easy to differentiate. The morel caps attach to the stem at their base, so there is no space between the stem and the cap. The caps of both the early and false morels are attached at their tops, leaving a space between cap and stem. Additionally, early morels come out just ahead of black morels, their seasons and habitats overlapping. False morels are more convoluted in appearance, lacking well-defined ridges and pits.

Puffballs There are several species of puffballs, all of which are edible. Puffballs usually appear in the latter part of summer and into the fall and vary in size from marbles or ping-pong balls to basketballs. Smaller ones are often found on rotting logs in woodlans, but I’ve seen them on a wide open baseball diamond! The giant puffballs are often found in pastures on sandy soil.

When edible, puffballs have firm, solid white flesh and should not be confused with the poisonous amanita mushrooms. Amanita’s start out concealed in a sac (the universal veil). If you cut through them at this stage, you will find an embryonic mushroom inside, not solid white flesh. The beginning stage of amanitas is usually underground, or partly so, so it’s not likely you’ll pick them, but just to be sure, cut your puffballs in half until you’re familiar with their looks and growth habits. If the puffball flesh is soft and/or starting to discolour (turning yellow), it is no longer edible.

Puffballs are great sliced and fried in butter or oil until golden. They can also be sliced and dried for later use.

Shaggy Manes Most people have probably seen these white, cylindrical mushrooms with shaggy tops popping up in lawns in late summer/early fall, right around the first frost. They don’t stay white for long, as they quickly start a process of autodigestion that turns them into a drippy black mess. True to their name, the “ink” from these mushrooms can be used as such. The trick to harvesting these mushrooms for food is to get them while the cap is still touching the ground. If you pick any with even the slightest discolouration, which starts at the base of the cap, there likely won’t be anything to salvage by Chicken of the Woods the time you bring them inside for processing. RM of Piney Expands Wildfire Preparedness Through Additional Firefighter Training The Rural Municipality of Piney is continuing efforts to strengthen wildfire response capabilities through expanded training for local firefighters.

As wildfire risks continue to increase across Manitoba, the RM of Piney and Buffalo Point First Nation are working together to improve regional preparedness through the Buffalo Point Piney (BPP) Wildfire Preparedness Training Project.

The second session of Type 3 Wildland Fire Fighter Training was held April 24 to 26 at the Woodridge Fire Hall. The training was delivered by the Manitoba Wildfire Service and brought together firefighters from all four fire departments within the RM of Piney and Buffalo Point First Nation, along with members of the Mutual Aid District.

2026 Summer 50/50 Raffle Jackpot Continues to Grow The Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue (SAAR) is continuing its 2026 summer online 50/50 cash raffle, offering participants a growing jackpot while raising funds to support homeless and abandoned companion animals in the Steinbach area.

As of June 26, the current jackpot sits at $12,570, meaning the eventual winner will take home 50 per cent of total ticket sales, currently estimated at $6,285 if the draw were held today.

The raffle will remain open for ticket sales until Friday, July 31, giving residents several weeks to participate in the fundraiser.

SAAR is offering multiple ticket package options, including 100 tickets for $100, 30 tickets for $50, 10 tickets for $20, and 3 tickets for $10, providing a range of entry points for supporters.

Summer Storms Bring Down Power Lines: Know What to Do While they can be fun to watch, summer storms and intense wind and hail can wreak havoc on trees and power lines.

Contact with a downed power line can be fatal. Discuss these life saving tips with your family: • A downed power line is dangerous and should be treated as an emergency. If you see a downed power line, call 911 immediately.

• The ground, as well as objects and water around a downed power line can be electrified and could cause electrocution.

To be safe, stay a minimum of 10 metres away from a downed power line – about the length of a bus.

• Never try to move a downed power line out of your way using any type of object.

This could result in serious injury or death.

• After reporting a downed power line, warn others to stay away. Also stay clear of low or sagging power lines. Traveling

under or near these lines can be dangerous.

If you are in a vehicle accident that is in contact with a downed power line, follow these steps: • Stay where you are as it may be dangerous to exit the vehicle.

• Back the vehicle away from contact with the line if it’s safe to do so.

• Call 911 and warn others to stay clear of the power line.

If it is not safe for you to stay in the vehicle due to fire or other immediate danger, do not simply step out of the vehicle as your body can make a path for electricity to the ground, electrocuting you. Exit the vehicle by following these steps: • Keep your feet together.

• Hold your arms tightly at your sides.

• Jump without touching the vehicle and ground at the same time.

• With your feet together, shuffle or hop away from the downed line.

Centre of Canada Park Moves Toward Long-Term Planning with Proposed Reserve Fund

By Dan Guetre The Rural Municipality of Taché is taking steps toward creating a long-term plan for the future development of the Centre of Canada Park, with Council proposing the establishment of a dedicated reserve fund for the site.

Council has passed second reading of a proposed by-law that would create the Centre of Canada Park Reserve Fund, with municipal administration now tasked with developing financial options that balance the vision presented by the Centre of Canada committee with responsible management of taxpayer dollars.

Deputy Mayor George McGregor said the proposed reserve fund would provide a structure for long-term planning and allow the established Centre of Canada committee to work within a defined financial framework.

“The 2nd reading of this proposed by-law has passed in council with instructions for administration to develop a financial plan that balances the responsibility of being good stewards of the taxes ratepayers contribute and the submitted budget from the Centre of Canada committee,” said McGregor.

McGregor added that Council will need to explore possible revenue streams that could help offset costs currently carried by local taxpayers. While the site has the potential to become a regional tourism attraction, he

said the municipality still needs to determine the long-term direction and purpose of the park.

Mayor Armand Poirier said that if the reserve fund is approved, a nominal special levy could potentially be introduced through municipal taxation.

“It would be really small, barely affecting the mill rate in a negligible way,” said Poirier.

He added that revenue generated from leasing agricultural land surrounding the site would be directed into the reserve fund.

“We are trying to put some money aside for special project ideas the committee has presented,” Poirier said.

The Mayor explained that Council has received requests from the Centre of Canada committee and now has the responsibility of determining what projects are feasible in the short-term and what should be considered as longer-term development.

Since the initial development of the site, Poirier said the Centre of Canada Park has gained momentum, but moving forward will require agreement among the various groups involved, including Council, the Centre of Canada committee, the Taché Community Development Corporation, and Taché Recreation.

He is hoping everyone can come together in agreeing that the site, initially developed with local ideas, can have entrenched benefits to Taché entities as a priority.

He said stakeholders have different ideas about what the site

could become, ranging from a traditional park to a location with commercial development opportunities or even a themed attraction.

“To move forward properly, a consensus is required,” said Poirier, who while wanting to ensure his taxpayers are respected, doesn’t want to see the site turned into a full blown commercial venue.

While discussions remain in the early stages, informal conversations between Poirier and the Manitoba Premier have opened the door to incorporating a Truth and Reconciliation theme into future development plans.

Poirier said a park with a national focus on Truth and Reconciliation could help increase awareness of the site, attract broader support, and potentially reduce financial pressure on local taxpayers.

He noted that the idea may not come to completion during his time as Mayor, but believes establishing a clear vision now would help ensure the original grassroots idea behind the Centre of Canada Park is respected and recognized.

In a letter to Mayor Poirier, the Province encouraged further development of the concept and collaboration with Indigenous partners.

RM of Piney Offering Three Forest Tours Highlighting Local Resources and Industry

By Dan Guetre The Rural Municipality of Piney is inviting residents to explore the region’s forests and learn more about the natural resources and industries that play an important role in the local economy.

The RM is organizing three free forest tours this summer and fall continuing the success of the Forest Tours with Bob program, offering participants opportunities to experience everything from non-timber forest products to large-scale forestry operations and peatland resources. Residents can register for one or more.

The first tour, “Goods From

the Woods: Non-Timber Forest Products,” will take place on Sunday, July 26, from 1 pm to 4:30 pm.

Participants will begin the afternoon in the forest harvesting blueberries and saskatoons while learning about a variety of products that can come from the forest. The tour will also include demonstrations on growing mushrooms on oak logs, tapping and processing maple syrup, and identifying forest edibles.

Following the outdoor portion of the tour, participants will return to the Council Chambers in Vassar for an informative PowerPoint presentation on

non-timber forest products.

There are 15 spots available for this tour.

The second event, scheduled for Friday, August 14, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, will take participants on a full-day visit to the West Fraser Mill in Barwick, Ontario.

The tour will provide a behind-the-scenes look at how local poplar trees are processed into oriented strand board (OSB). A significant amount of poplar harvested in the RM of Piney is processed at the West Fraser facility and distributed throughout North America.

Transportation will be provided from the RM office in

Vassar, with a stop for a picnic lunch at Lighthouse Park in Barwick before the mill tour.

Participants should bring any personal safety gear they have available. The RM and mill will provide hard hats, high visibility vests, and hearing and eye protection. Due to crossing the Warroad, Minnesota customs crossing and the Ontario crossing at Rainy River, participants must have a valid passport.

Fresh fruit should not be packed in lunches because of border requirements, and mill regulations require all participants to wear steel-toed footwear to attend.

The final tour, “Forests & Peatland: FPM Tour & St. Labre Sawmill Tour,” will be held Friday, September 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This tour will explore the connection between forestry operations and peat moss production, two important resource industries in southeastern Manitoba. Participants will learn how peatlands formed over thousands of years alongside the boreal forest and will see how forest products are processed at FPM in Vassar.

The tour will continue in St. Labre with a visit to the local sawmill for an in-depth look at another part of the forestry sec-

tor. Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch, with a break planned between tours. Fifteen spots are available.

All tours begin and end at the RM of Piney office at 6092 Boundary Street in Vassar.

Transportation will be provided to and from each tour location.

The events are open to participants ages 12 and up and are free of charge. Space is limited, and residents are encouraged to reserve early.

Ritchot Begins Elm and Des Chênes Road Reconstruction Project The RM of Ritchot Public Works Department has recently announced the start of construction on the Elm and Des Chênes Street road reconstruction and land drainage system (LDS) improvement project in Ile des Chenes.

Public Works Manager Mike Dumaine said the project was approved as part of the RM of Ritchot’s 2026 Financial Plan.

The project is designed to improve local road infrastructure and drainage capacity through a series of upgrades, including LDS installation, clearing and earth excavation, base work and aggregate placement, grading, packing, watering, hard surfacing, and remedial landscaping.

Hard surfacing will be completed by a contractor, while landscaping work will take place after asphalt installation and the completion of other construction activities.

Following landscaping,

residents are asked to help newly established grass areas recover by avoiding foot traffic on newly applied hydro seed and watering areas adjacent to their properties twice daily for the first seven to 10 days.

Once germination begins, typically after about 10 days, residents can reduce watering as needed.

The RM of Ritchot says residents should expect some impacts during construction, but municipal services will continue. Garbage and recycling collection will operate as usual, and emergency service access will be maintained throughout the project.

If temporary driveway restrictions are required, municipal staff will work directly with affected residents to minimize disruptions and coordinate alternate parking arrangements.

To support safe and efficient construction, resi-

dents are asked to avoid parking on the street during construction hours, which run Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The municipality is also reminding drivers and pedestrians to use caution when travelling through the construction area, reduce speeds, and stay away from active equipment and work zones.

Parents are encouraged to remind children to avoid construction areas.

Residents with questions about the project are asked to contact the Public Works Department at publicworks@ritchot.com or 204-883-2142 rather than approaching crews directly on-site, as workers may not be able to stop operations.

Lagassé Highlights Dawson Trail Advocacy During Spring Legislative Session

By Dan Guetre With the spring session of the Manitoba Legislature now concluded, Dawson Trail MLA Bob Lagassé says his focus throughout the session remained on bringing the concerns of local residents forward and advocating for community priorities at the provincial level.

Lagassé, who currently serves as an Independent MLA, said his position has allowed him to work directly with government ministers and members from across the Legislature while focusing on issues affecting the Dawson Trail constituency.

“Being an Independent

allows me to focus solely on what is best for our communities, advocate for local concerns without partisan restrictions, and build support wherever it exists to achieve results for constituents,” said Lagassé.

During the session, Lagassé introduced a Private Members Resolution focused on the rights of Independent Members of the Legislative Assembly.

He said the resolution was intended to ensure Independent MLAs receive fair access to resources, procedural opportunities, and privileges within the Legislature.

While Lagassé noted his own experience as an In-

dependent MLA has been positive, he said other Independent members have not always received the same level of access and fairness as members belonging to political parties.

The MLA also raised several local issues in the Legislature, including questions related to the Sio Silica project, highway safety between Landmark and Lorette, and the impact of the province’s social media restrictions on individuals with disabilities who rely on artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT. Access Credit Union Awards $50,000 to Southeast Manitoba Schools for Recreation and Wellness Projects Access Credit Union has announced the recipients of its 2026 Focused Funding Grant, awarding a total of $250,000 to schools across Manitoba to support recreation and community wellness initiatives.

The program will provide $25,000 to each of 10 schools, funding a range of projects including nature-based learning spaces, playground improvements, outdoor classrooms, and innovative technology hubs. The initiative is intended to strengthen school communities by bringing together students, administrators, elders, and parent committees.

RM of Piney Approves 2026 Financial Plan, Maintains Mill Rate The Rural Municipality of Piney has approved its 2026 Financial Plan, with Council choosing to maintain the municipal mill rate at 12.09, the same level as 2025.

The decision to hold the mill rate steady reflects Council’s effort to balance municipal priorities while recognizing the financial pressures facing residents. By keeping the rate unchanged, the RM of Piney is providing greater predictability and stability for rate-

payers heading into the 2026 taxation year.

The approved 2026 Financial Plan outlines approximately $3.7 million in total municipal expenses, funded through a combination of property taxation and other revenue sources. Property taxes will continue to represent a significant portion of municipal revenue, accounting for approximately 48 per cent, with the remainder coming from grants, fees, and other sources.

Municipal taxes make up about 45 per cent of the total property tax bill, while the remaining 55 per cent is allocated to school taxes established by the province and local school divisions.

Council’s budget continues to prioritize the maintenance of essential services relied upon by residents. Transportation Services represent the largest portion of spending at 30 per cent of the budget, supporting road maintenance,

snow removal, drainage work, and infrastructure improvements.

General Government accounts for 19 per cent of expenditures, covering administration, staffing, and municipal operations. Protective Services receive nine per cent of the budget, supporting fire protection, policing, and emergency response services, while Environmental Health accounts for seven per cent, including garbage collection,

recycling, and lagoon operations.

Additional funding will support recreation, economic development, and community services aimed at enhancing quality of life throughout the municipality.

During the budgeting process, Council considered community priorities, current service levels, and long-term financial planning to guide its decisions. The municipality said the 2026 plan reflects

a balance between fiscal responsibility and continued investment in core services and infrastructure.

Council thanked residents for their input and engagement throughout the process and reaffirmed its commitment to transparent and responsible financial management.

St. Pierre-Jolys Mayor Unveils Children’s Mural Celebrating Bilingual Unity and Youth Creativity A new children’s mural celebrating creativity, collaboration, and bilingual identity was officially unveiled June 10 at the Bibliothèque Régionale Jolys Regional Library in St. Pierre-Jolys.

The unveiling ceremony was led by Village of St. Pierre-Jolys Mayor Raymond Maynard, who highlighted the project as a reflection of community spirit and cooperation between the region’s French and English-speaking populations.

The mural project was developed through a partnership with Créer pour se Rapprocher, bringing together students from École communautaire Réal Bérard and École Héritage.

Children from Grades 1 through 6 contributed to the artwork, which was designed as a shared expression of identity and inclusion.

In his remarks, Mayor Maynard emphasized that the mural represents more than artistic expression.

“This project came to

life through our partnership with Créer pour se Rapprocher, bringing together children from both official language communities,” Maynard said. “This mural is more than art—it is a symbol of cooperation, inclusion, and shared identity.”

The Next Chapter Welcome readers to the joyful heat of summer! At least, it is hot when the summer storms are not ripping through the land and flooding my front lawn. Still, it is better than the colder season, which shall not be named.

Recently, a member of my family has reached a milestone. My daughter has graduated from high school. After all the years of studying and learning, she has reached a point where they have come to an end. Yes, you should always be learning, please, never stop learning, but for now, the school structure of learning has ended. She has always been such a great student and one of those children that never had to be reminded to do her homework or to be sure to study for a test. She just naturally took care of it.

I am very proud of my daughter and this wonderful milestone that she has achieved.

The ceremony and the banquet were nicely set up and were quite enjoyable to attend. There were speeches by some of the school staff and by a couple of the parents along with the speeches by some of the chosen students. As a person with some age and some life experiences, I found it interesting to hear their words of wisdom, some of the advice was worth their weight while others just rang off as a bit too trivial and cliche. That being said, maybe for the right child, those words might be exactly what they needed to hear as they go forward into the next chapter of their lives.

One thing that gave me food for my thoughts was how some of the students had future plans that were loftier and grander. Some to work on the family farm, some to attend higher levels of schooling, while others had accounting and medical career-based goals in mind. Some though, had the goals of getting a job, earning money and maybe saving some of it. This made me a bit sad to hear as I feel that each of these graduates could achieve higher goals. That being said, I also understand that not everybody can or is willing to reach higher, to achieve more. What would the world be like if there was no one willing to just work. I also see that there is nothing wrong with working for a living since there is so much more to be done both in the workforce and after the day’s work is done.

After all, the relationships that one has with the ones around us can truly make our lives so much more than just working, just living.

Tim Hortons Brewed to Win Amazing Race Returns With Bigger Event and Afterburn Social

By Dan Guetre The Tim Hortons Brewed to Win Amazing Race is returning to Steinbach for its fifth annual event, bringing together teams, community supporters, and local organizations for a day of competition, celebration, and fundraising.

The 2026 race will take place Saturday, July 11, beginning at 10 am at K.R. Barkman Park in Steinbach.

Organizers say this year’s event will be bigger and more challenging, with up to 200 racers expected to take part.

Teams of four will navigate the city while solving puzzles, completing physical challenges, and working through checkpoint tasks as they race against the clock. The event is designed for participants of all experience levels, whether teams are competing for the win or simply looking for a fun community experience.

Racers will receive free admission

to the post-race celebration, where participants, friends, and family can gather to recognize the accomplishments of the day.

Following the race, the Afterburn Social will bring the celebration to the Southeast Event Centre.

The evening event will feature race awards, a 50/50 draw, silent auction, refreshments, live entertainment, and a cash bar.

The Afterburn Social will run from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. and will celebrate not only the racers and sponsors, but also the causes supported through the event — Tim Hortons Foundation Camps and Southeast Cancer Support Services.

“Come out, celebrate, and make a difference,” organizers said, encouraging the community to take part in the evening festivities.

Tickets for the Afterburn Social are $15, with supporter tickets available for $10. Tickets can be purchased online or in person at the

Southeast Cancer Support Services (SCSS) office and local Tim Hortons locations.

Arts4Tots Preschool Program Celebrates 2026 Graduates and Honours 20 Years of Leadership

By Dan Guetre The Steinbach Arts Council (SAC) celebrated the accomplishments of its youngest artists while recognizing two decades of dedicated leadership during the 2026 Arts4Tots Preschool Program graduation ceremony.

The event was held in early June at the Steinbach Cultural Arts Centre, where families gathered to celebrate the Arts4Tots Class of 2026 and honour Program Director Pamela Peters for 20 years of service with SAC. Supporting local talent and creating accessible opportunities for early arts education has been at the heart of SAC’s mission for more than 45 years. The Arts4Tots Preschool Program reflects that commitment by providing young children throughout the Southeast region with

creative learning experiences that combine arts, education, and community connection.

Peters began her journey with Arts4Tots as an assistant before

her dedication, creativity, and leadership abilities led to her becoming Program Director more than a decade ago.

ication has shaped Arts4Tots into a foundation of our community programming,” said Cassandra Kornelsen, Manager of Community Programs. “Her

leadership ensures that our curriculum remains stable, nurturing, creative, and responsive to the developmental needs of young children in the Southeast region.”

SAC says long-term leadership plays an important role in maintaining a successful preschool program. Under Peters’ guidance, the Arts4Tots curriculum has continued to evolve, incorporating structured learning stations that support science, math, reading, and fine motor skill development through Montessori-inspired activities and monthly themed programming.

The program also brings in professional guest clinicians who introduce children to a variety of disciplines, including dance, music, visual arts, culinary arts, and drama. These experiences help children develop

physical coordination, explore storytelling, build confidence, and discover new forms of creative expression.

Learning extends beyond the classroom through community field trips and showcase performances, giving children opportunities to connect with their families and the wider regional community.

As SAC continues to expand its programming and serve thousands of participants each year, the organization says leaders like Peters help ensure that inclusion, well-being, and excellence remain central values.

The Steinbach Arts Council congratulated the Arts4Tots Class of 2026 and thanked Pamela Peters for 20 years of helping shape a stronger, more vibrant community — one young artist at a time.

RM of De Salaberry Approves St. Malo-Area Subdivision Despite Residents’ Opposition

By Dan Guetre The Rural Municipality of RM of De Salaberry has approved a subdivision application near St. Malo despite receiving multiple written objections and in-person opposition from residents concerned about drainage, groundwater impacts, road capacity, and environmental protection.

The decision was made during a recent council meeting. The application was submitted by Miguel and Allie-Monique Fontaine-Tessier Cure and includes conditions related to drainage engineering, road construction, reserve dedication, and development agreements.

At the start of deliberations, Reeve Darrel Cure removed himself from discussion and voting on the

matter, citing a potential conflict of interest. He did not participate in any part of the debate or decision on the subdivision.

Council ultimately approved the subdivision with conditions requiring the applicant to provide engineered drainage plans, pay subdivision and lot levy fees, complete a development agreement, and address public reserve dedication equivalent to 10 per cent of the developed land.

The approval also requires confirmation of drainage easements, engineered review of stormwater management, and payment of all outstanding property taxes.

The municipality received four formal written objections, alongside presentations and letters from

residents at the hearing.

In total, at least ten individuals spoke or submitted comments opposing the application, including Randy Hebert, Curtis and Victoria Catellier, Allysha Burns, Simon Wiwsionski, Trevor Haycock, Michel Maynard, Niclas Klinner, Susan Gray, Jodi Michelle, and Christian Gosselin.

Many concerns focused on the proposed density of the development, water management, and its compatibility with surrounding rural land uses.

One written submission described the subdivision as a “high-density layout” that could create an “isolated island development” and raised concerns about drainage, septic capacity, and groundwater protection.

The letter argued that the

project should not proceed without a full engineered drainage plan demonstrating “zero net-discharge impact on surrounding large lots,” along with a hydrogeological study to assess risks to private wells.

It also raised concerns about wastewater systems, stating that clustering multiple septic systems could lead to long-term environmental impacts and potential contamination risks.

The same submission criticized the road layout, arguing it could isolate neighbouring large-lot properties and reduce emergency access connectivity.

Another detailed objection from Allysha Burns focused heavily on environmental impacts, citing concerns about habitat

loss and species at risk.

The submission referenced migratory bird activity, including species such as the Eastern Whippoor-will and Red-headed Woodpecker, and argued that development could conflict with provincial and federal species protection legislation. The RM of De Salaberry report prepared municipal staff acknowledged that the Wildlife Branch noted that the property contains habitat for the endangered Red-Headed Woodpecker.

The letter also referenced concerns about light pollution, ecological disruption, and compliance with Manitoba conservation statutes, including protections under the provincial Endangered Species and Ecosystems Act. A third submission from

Simon Wiwsionski raised concerns about drainage capacity and road conditions, stating that the area is already prone to high groundwater levels, spring flooding issues, and infrastructure strain.

He warned that increased development could worsen existing road conditions on Moose Creek Road and contribute to additional maintenance challenges.

Despite the opposition, council approved the subdivision with conditions intended to mitigate infrastructure and environmental impacts.

The approval requires engineered drainage solutions and formal development agreements addressing roads, wildlife habitat protection, and public reserve lands.

Water and Electricity - A deadly summer combo

Water and electricity are a dangerous mix because water is an excellent conductor of electricity.

With swimmers enjoying backyard pools, kids playing with garden hoses, summer rains, and outdoor yard projects underway, the opportunities for water and electricity to mix are numerous. Injuries and fatalities do happen.

Take a moment to teach your family how to avoid the deadly hazard of electrocution: • Keep electrical appliances

away from water at all times.

Don’t have a radio or phone charger near the pool for example.

• Never touch electrical cords, switches, or appliances when you are wet, standing in water or have wet hands.

• If an electrical cord or appliance falls into the water do not try to retrieve it or pull the plug until you turn off the power at the main switch. If you are using electrical tools, appliances or cords, keep them away from wet or damp

areas including the grass or deck.

• Outdoor electrical equipment should only be used if a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) has been installed by a certified electrician.

• Sump pumps, power washers and wet/dry vacuums should only be used on grounded outlets.

• Have a licensed electrical contractor install and maintain your pool wiring, underwater lighting and upgrade protection equipment.

A Future Homecoming Awaits Those Who Believe There are many Christians who read this article.

As a Christian, have you ever been discouraged and had thoughts that you were all alone and nobody else cared?

Let me tell you a true story of a missionary. Years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt from the United States went on a safari in Africa. When he returned to the States, there was a missionary on board as well. This missionary had laboured for over forty years of service for the Lord in a jungle village.

As the ship came into the New York harbour and docked, cheering throngs greeted Roosevelt as he exited the ship. There was a happy celebration for the returning President, but there was no one at the dock to welcome the returning missionary.

Momentarily, the missionary felt sorry for himself. “When a president comes home after a hunting trip, hundreds come out to greet him, but Lord, when one of your servants comes home after a lifetime of service, no one is there to greet him.”

Immediately the missionary heard the Lord whisper in his ear, “But, my son, you are not home yet.”

Sometimes we all feel like that missionary, but for the Christian there is a song that brings our thinking back to reality. “This world is not my home, I’m just a passing through, my treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue.”

Christian, be encouraged today, Jesus said in John 14, “In my Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; That where I am, there ye may be also.”

Someday, there will be a homecoming celebration for every Christian, so when you get discouraged at times, just think of your future.

If you’re not a Christian, you don’t have this hope. But you can if you confess your sin to God and trust in the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, to take away all your sin and make you a child of God. Then you can claim this promise too!

Wildlife Haven Auction Raises Nearly $15,000 to Support Wildlife Rehabilitation Wildlife Haven’s annual Summer Fun for Wildlife Online Auction has raised $14,831 to support the care and rehabilitation of sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife.

The online auction, held from June 16 to 21, featured a variety of prizes and items for bidders to win, while providing critical support for Wildlife Haven’s ongoing work.

Every bid contributed to helping provide food, medical treatment, shelter, and rehabilitation services for wildlife in need. Organizers said the support goes beyond the prizes, giving injured and orphaned animals a second chance at survival and eventual release back into the wild.

Fatal Highway 59 Collision Claims Ontario Man Near Tache St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision that occurred early June 17, at approximately 12:21 am on Highway 59 near Prefontaine Road in the Rural Municipality of Tache.

Police say the crash involved a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck.

According to RCMP, a vehicle carrying two occupants was travelling northbound on Highway 59 when it crossed into the path of a southbound semi-truck. The two vehicles collided and both came to rest in the ditch.

Emergency responders, including fire crews and EMS, arrived shortly after police.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, a 20-year-old man from Ontario, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 13-year-old male passenger from Steinbach was transported by STARS air ambulance to a Winnipeg hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi-truck, a 45-year-old man from Alberta, was not injured in the collision.

RCMP confirmed there were no other occupants in either vehicle.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP, along with Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Two Southeast Parents Face Aggravated Assault Charges After Newborn Suffers Significant Injuries Last fall, on September 9, Manitoba RCMP were notified that a male infant had been brought to the Child Protection Centre by his mother with unexplained injuries.

An examination of the infant – who was less than a month old – revealed significant injuries, including multiple fractures, lacerations and bruising. Following that examination, the infant was placed in care.

The Manitoba RCMP Integrated Child Abuse Unit began investigating the incident, which included the execution of a search warrant at the parents’ residence in southeastern Manitoba.

A charge of aggravated assault has been authorized against the parents – a 32-year-old female and 32-year-old male.

Both parents were released from custody on an undertaking.

Steinbach RCMP Searching for Wanted Woman Facing Multiple Charges Steinbach RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in locating a woman wanted on multiple outstanding charges.

Police say Renee ASTRA, 51, is currently wanted on an unendorsed warrant for assault, mischief, uttering threats to property, and failing to comply with an undertaking.

RCMP indicate Astra is known to frequent the Steinbach area and may also be in Winnipeg.

She is described as approximately 5’10” tall, weighing 192 lbs,

with brown shoulder-length hair and brown eyes.

Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to contact Steinbach RCMP immediately.

Police remind the public not to approach individuals who are wanted on warrants and to instead report sightings directly to law enforcement.

Serious Highway 59 Collision Sends One Teen to Hospital in Critical Condition The St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP are investigating a serious two-vehicle collision that left one teenager with life-threatening injuries and another driver seriously injured after a crash near the intersection of Highway 59 and Provincial Road 210 in the Rural Municipality of Ritchot.

Police say the collision occurred on May 27, at approximately 9:17 p.m., when officers were dispatched to reports of a motor vehicle crash on Highway 59 at PR 210.

When RCMP arrived, they located two heavily damaged vehicles in the west ditch south of the intersection.

One vehicle was found on its roof after rolling multiple times, while the second SUV was fully engulfed in flames.

Investigators determined that the SUV had been travelling southbound on Highway 59 when it collided with a grey vehicle crossing the highway westbound on PR 210.

The driver of the grey vehicle, a 17-year-old male from Île-des-Chênes, sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital by STARS air ambulance. He remains in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV, a 43-year-old woman from Steinbach, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance.

RCMP confirmed there were no passengers in either vehicle at the time of the collision.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP, together with Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Major Contraband Tobacco Seizure at West Hawk Lake Weigh Station Nets Over 7.8 Million Cigarettes A large-scale contraband tobacco investigation at a Manitoba weigh station has resulted in one of the province’s largest cigarette seizures in recent memory, following a joint enforcement operation involving RCMP and Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement.

The incident occurred on May 29 at approximately 1:40 p.m. at the West Hawk Lake weigh station near Falcon Beach, where Motor Carrier Enforcement officers flagged a commercial motor vehicle for inspection and alerted Manitoba Finance’s Special Investigations Unit.

Falcon Beach RCMP officers attended the scene and arrested two occupants of the vehicle on charges of trafficking contraband tobacco under the Criminal Code of Canada.

The driver, a 40-year-old man from Brooks, Alberta, and a co-driver, a 70-year-old man from Toronto, Ontario, were taken into custody before Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services assumed control of the investigation.

A subsequent search of the semi-trailer revealed a massive quantity of illegal tobacco products. Police say officers located 781 cases of contraband cigarettes, with each case containing 50 cartons, resulting in a total seizure of 39,050 cartons, or approximately 7.81 million cigarettes.

Authorities estimate the street value of the seized contraband tobacco to be between $2.34 million and $3.12 million.

The seized trailer was impounded as part of the investigation.

Both suspects were later released on appearance notices and are scheduled to appear in court on August 7, 2026, in Steinbach. They face charges including possession of contraband tobacco under the Excise Act, posses-

sion for the purpose of distribution under the Criminal Code, and possession of unstamped tobacco under Manitoba’s Tax Administration and Miscellaneous Taxes Act. Officials also highlighted significant tax implications tied to the seizure. Manitoba’s triple tax penalty of $0.90 per cigarette amounts to an estimated $7,029,000, while additional federal excise taxes at $0.17 per cigarette total approximately $1,327,700.

Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement Chief Kevin Mantie praised the coordinated effort between agencies.

“I commend the Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement officers and the strong collaboration with the RCMP and Manitoba Finance’s Taxation Special Investigations Unit,” said Mantie. “These efforts help protect a fair, lawful market while disrupting organized crime and sending a clear message that illegal activity will not be tolerated.”

Mantie added that the inspection also uncovered five offences related to tampering with electronic logging devices and two major mechanical defects, resulting in approximately $15,000 in additional fines.

Inspector Robert Wuskynyk of Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services said the seizure underscores the scale of illegal tobacco trafficking and the importance of inter-agency enforcement.

“This seizure highlights the scale of illegal tobacco trafficking and the importance of working with our provincial partners,” Wuskynyk said. “When consumers buy illegal tobacco, they are contributing to criminal activity and potentially funding organized crime.”

The investigation remains ongoing.

RCMP Seize 800 Cartons of Contraband Cigarettes in Highway 1 Traffic Stop Near Dufresne Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services have laid multiple charges and seized a large quantity of contraband tobacco following a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway near Dufresne.

The incident occurred on June 11 at approximately 3:20 pm, when an RCMP Traffic Services officer travelling westbound on Highway 1 observed a vehicle approaching from behind at a reported speed of 130 km/h.

Police say the vehicle was pulled over immediately.

During the stop, the two occupants told officers they were travelling from Ontario back to Winnipeg. While speaking with the driver and passenger, the officer detected the smell of raw cannabis coming from inside the vehicle, leading to both individuals being arrested.

As officers opened the passenger door, a bag containing unstamped cigarettes reportedly fell from the vehicle. Further inspection revealed additional unstamped tobacco products in the same area.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered more cartons of cigarettes hidden inside cooler bags, along with a large quantity of Canadian currency.

In total, police say 800 cartons of unstamped

cigarettes were seized, with an estimated street value of $80,000.

RCMP note that under Manitoba’s tobacco tax structure, the seizure carries significant penalties, including a triple tax fine of $144,000 at $0.90 per cigarette, along with an additional federal excise tax penalty of $27,200 at $0.17 per cigarette.

The driver, a 62-year-old woman from Grand Rapids, and the passenger, a 78-year-old man from Winnipeg, have been charged under multiple statutes, including possession of contraband tobacco under the Excise Act, possession for the purpose of distribution, proceeds of crime under the Criminal Code, and possession of unstamped tobacco under the Tax Administration and Miscellaneous Taxes Act. The driver also received additional provincial fines totaling $1,351 for speeding, unlawful transportation of cannabis in a vehicle, and possession of improperly packaged and unstamped cannabis.

Both accused individuals have been released on an appearance notice and are scheduled to appear in court on September 4, 2026, in Steinbach.

Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services say the investigation remains ongoing.

Wanted Man Arrested South of Lorette Following Months-Long RCMP Investigation St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP have arrested a wanted man following a lengthy investigation and coordinated police operation south of Lorette in the Rural Municipality of Tache.

Police say the initial incident occurred on December 30, 2025 when officers responded to an unknown situation on Road 47N. Upon arrival, RCMP located a 24-year-old woman from Winnipeg hiding in the snow and not properly dressed for the weather. She was transported to hospital as a precaution.

Investigators later determined the woman had been assaulted.

Following the investigation, RCMP made repeated efforts to locate a suspect, resulting in an arrest warrant being issued on January 2, 2026, for assault.

The suspect, identified as John Meadows, 28, of the RM of Tache, was also wanted on additional warrants including assault causing bodily harm, trespass at night, obstruction of justice, operating a motor vehicle while prohibited, and failing to attend court.

After months of ongoing investigation, police obtained an entry warrant for a residence on Road 47N. On June 17, St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP, with assistance from the Manitoba RCMP Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services, executed the warrant and arrested Meadows without incident. He was subsequently remanded into custody.

RCMP say the arrest concludes an extended effort to locate the suspect and bring him into custody in connection with multiple outstanding warrants.

Two-Vehicle Collision Near Giroux Sends Three People to Hospital Steinbach RCMP are investigating a two-vehicle collision that occurred near Giroux earlier this month, sending three people to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious.

Police say the crash happened on June 12 at approximately 10:39 a.m. at the intersection of Provincial Road 311 and Provincial Road 210.

According to RCMP, a pickup truck was travelling northbound on PR 210 when it collided with an SUV that was travelling westbound on PR 311 and turning onto PR 210.

Emergency responders attended the scene shortly after the collision was reported.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 26-year-old man from La Broquerie, was transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. He was later released the same day.

The driver of the SUV, a 73-year-old woman from Winnipeg, was airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital.

A passenger in the SUV, a 75-year-old man from Winnipeg, also sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to hospital and released the following day.

RCMP say the investigation into the collision is ongoing.

RCMP Respond to Park Fire in Kleefeld; Two Youths Identified but Not Charged St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP responded to a fire at Kleefeld Park earlier this month that resulted in damage to park property and prompted a coordinated investigation involving multiple community partners.

Police say the incident occurred on June 3 at approximately 5:50 p.m., when officers were called to Kleefeld Park on Second Street for reports of a fire.

When RCMP arrived, they observed that a fire had been set inside a dumpster as well as in the men’s washroom. The fires had already been extinguished by the fire department prior to police arrival.

During the investigation, officers learned that two youth had previously been caught shoplifting at a nearby business. Employees were later informed by other patrons that the same individuals had allegedly started a fire at the park shortly after the incident at the store.

Witnesses reported seeing the youths set fire to a dumpster and flee when confronted.

RCMP were able to quickly identify and locate two boys, aged 12 and 13, both from Kleefeld. Officers spoke with the youths individually and issued formal warnings regarding the seriousness of their actions and the potential consequences of criminal charges.

At this time, RCMP confirmed that no criminal charges will be laid. However, police say they will be working closely with local partners, including the fire department, by-law officers, and community programming services, to ensure appropriate follow-up and accountability measures are taken.

The investigation has concluded, though officials emphasize continued efforts to address youth-related incidents in the community.

Four Injured in Highway 12 and PR 210 Collision Near Ste. Anne Steinbach RCMP are investigating a two-vehicle collision that left four people injured at a busy intersection in the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne earlier this month.

Police say the crash occurred on June 2 at approximately 4:50 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 12 and Provincial Road 210.

RCMP officers arrived on scene and located four injured individuals.

Fire crews and emergency medical services arrived shortly afterward to assist.

According to investigators, a vehicle was travelling westbound on PR 210 when it was struck by an SUV travelling southbound on Highway 12.

The driver of the westbound vehicle, a 42-year-old man from Winni-

peg, and his passenger, a 29-yearold man from Landmark, were both transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver remains in hospital in stable condition, while the passenger has since been discharged.

The SUV was driven by a 40-year-old woman from Winnipeg. She and her passenger, a 14-year-old girl, were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver has been discharged, while the passenger remains in hospital in stable condition.

Steinbach RCMP, along with Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Teen Killed in ATV Collision Near Brokenhead Beausejour RCMP are investigating a fatal collision involving an all-terrain vehicle that occurred in the Rural Municipality of Brokenhead.

Police say the crash happened on June 25 at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Provincial Road 302 near Road 71 North.

Emergency Medical Services were already on scene when RCMP arrived. Authorities confirmed that the male driver of the ATV, a 19-yearold from the RM of Brokenhead, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators determined that the ATV had been travelling eastbound on Road 71 North when it was struck by a northbound gravel truck on Provincial Road 302.

The driver of the gravel truck, a 60-year-old man from Steinbach, was not injured in the collision.

Beausejour RCMP, along with Manitoba RCMP Traffic Services, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

No further details have been released at this time.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP Responded to Fatal Collision Near Lorette St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP Responded to Fatal Collision Near Lorette On June 28, at approximately 6:45 am, St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP received a report of an SUV that had hit the ditch and flipped while travelling on Highway 405 near Lorette.

The collision is believed to have occurred sometime overnight and went unnoticed until daylight.

Officers responded to the scene and found the vehicle had been severely damaged. After a search of the area for the driver, he was found inside the vehicle, concealed by the extent of the damage to the vehicle.

The victim, a 17-year-old male from Dufresne, had died at the scene.

RCMP are investigating.

Discussion on Future of Senior Housing Options Highlighted at AGM

Seine River Services for Seniors recently hosted its Annual General Meeting in mid-June, featuring a community discussion focused on one of the most important issues facing older adults — housing options for seniors.

More than 100 community members, elected officials, and stakeholders attended the event, which included an expert panel exploring different models of senior housing, the challenges facing seniors, and the need for additional accessible housing options in the region.

The panel included Yann Boissoneault, CEO of Villa Youville; Randy Eros, councillor with the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne; Carolyn Peters, CEO of Silver Lining Care; Ken Tallaire, owner of HomePage Property Management; and Jill Deschauer, owner of Paradise Village.

Each panel member brought experience with unique senior housing models, while Eros provided a municipal government perspective on planning and development.

Heather Dean, Chair of Seine River Services for Seniors, said housing is becoming an increasingly important

concern for seniors in the region, especially those who require additional support with daily living.

“Housing is an important issue for seniors in our area, particularly those who are facing increasing need for personal services,” said Dean.

Dean explained that seniors and families need to understand the difference between assisted living and supportive housing. Supportive housing provides more intensive assistance for seniors who need help with activities such as personal hygiene, bathing, meals, and transportation.

Currently, publicly funded supportive housing options in the area are limited, including Villa Youville in Ste. Anne and Le Chalet in La Broquerie, with waiting lists remaining a concern.

The discussion also highlighted assisted living options for seniors who are able to live more independently but want additional support with services such as meals, housekeeping, maintenance, transportation, and social activities.

These privately funded spaces are an area where more development is needed.

Panel members shared information about their current housing models and future plans, while recognizing the need for additional supportive housing spaces with accessible features, including wheelchair-friendly designs, shared spaces, and areas for social programs.

Dean said there is also potential for innovative housing solutions in rural communities and emphasized the importance of continuing conversations with seniors about future developments.

“The voice of seniors is important in future housing developments for seniors,” she said.

Participants learned about the history and evolution of Paradise Village, T&T Properties and its 55-plus housing units, Silver Lining Care cottages, and Villa Youville’s expansion plans. Attendees also heard about zoning changes in the RM of Ste. Anne that allow for the construction of secondary, or “granny,” suites.

than just a place to live.

She described growing up in a smaller community where simple gestures between neighbours, such as a nod or wave while passing by, reflected a sense of familiarity and connection.

“The nodding of a head or lifting of a hand for a silent ‘hello’ is

important in retirement communities such as Paradise Village,” Deschauer said.

The AGM discussion reinforced the need for continued community dialogue as local governments, service providers, and residents work toward creating more housing options that support seniors at every stage of aging.

First CarFit Event Brings Senior Driver Safety Program to Southeast Manitoba

Southeast Manitoba drivers had the opportunity to improve their comfort and confidence behind the wheel during the region’s first CarFit event, recently hosted in Ste. Anne by Seine River Services for Seniors.

The program is designed to help mature adult drivers ensure their vehicles are properly adjusted for comfort and safety. Mobility and safety experts guided participants through simple vehicle adjustments that can improve visibility, positioning, and overall driving experience.

Participants took part in a series of checks covering important safety considerations, including seating position, mirror placement, indicator signals, lights, and tire tread. Each participant also received a free resource bag filled with helpful information for older adults, along with items donated by local businesses.

The event also provided an opportunity for participants to connect with local first responders, who attended to answer questions and discuss community safety.

Heather Dean, Chair of Seine River Services for Seniors, said the event provided valuable information for local drivers.

“Well organized event. Excellent review of sitting position in car for optimum air bag function. Interesting exercise with mirrors to identify blind spot. Helpful test of all indicator signals and lights. Also measurement of tire tread,” said Dean.

La Verendrye MLA Konrad Narth also attended the event and praised the initiative.

“I stopped by the first-ever CarFit seminar hosted by Seine River Services For Seniors in Ste. Anne today, and I was impressed by this great initiative,” said Narth.

Narth said the program is not intended to judge a person’s driving ability, but instead focuses on improving safety through education and awareness.

“What I appreciated most is that this program is not about judging a person’s ability to drive. It is completely independent from MPI and is carried out by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about helping seniors and promoting safe driving in our region,” he said.

He added that members of the RCMP also attended and participated in the event, gaining additional insight into driver safety practices.

“Even after years of driving, I learned a few things and was reminded of how easy it is for bad habits to slowly develop,” Narth said.

Organizers said CarFit is beneficial for anyone who wants to review their vehicle setup and driving comfort, whether they have been driving for decades or simply want reassurance that their vehicle is adjusted safely.

The event was supported by the RM of Ste. Anne, Clearview Co-op, local business Muskie Creek, and local MLAs. The Ste. Anne Lions Club was also on-site with its mobile barbecue.

Seine River Services for Seniors said the event helped connect older adults with community partners and local supports while promoting safer driving habits throughout southeast Manitoba.
