U17 AAA Eastman Selects Capture Gold at Winnipeg Jets Elite Classic The U17 AAA Eastman Selects delivered a championship performance at the 2025 Winnipeg Jets U17 AAA Elite Classic, capturing gold after an exciting four-day tournament held November 27 to 30 at the Hockey for All Centre.

The Selects opened the tournament with a narrow 4–3 loss to the Sask East Oilers on Thursday, surrendering the winning goal with just 30 seconds remaining. Undeterred, Eastman responded in dominant fashion on Friday, shutting out the Winnipeg Wild 6–0.

8th Annual Longest Night Run Raises Record $13,613 for Southeast Cancer Support Services On the longest night of the year, participants from across southern Manitoba once again came together in solidarity and hope, raising a record-breaking $13,613 for Southeast Cancer Support Services (SCSS).

The 2025 Longest Night Run took place overnight from sunset on December 21 to sunrise on December 22, marking the eighth year of the annual event. Runners and walkers moved through the darkness as a vigil for individuals and families experiencing some of the most challenging seasons of life.

This year’s event welcomed 181 participants, including 138 in Steinbach, 38 at a satellite run hosted by Big Sky Run Co. in Winnipeg, and five virtual participants who joined from afar. Six runners demonstrated exceptional endurance by completing the full 16-hour journey from sunset to sunrise.

Among the top fundraisers were Zac Friesen, who raised $3,300, and Kevin Matthews, who raised $1,000.

“The Board and staff of Southeast Cancer Support Services are deeply grateful to The Longest Night Run organizers, participants, and donors under the strong leadership of Brent Manke, for their incredible generosity,” said SCSS Executive Director Cindi Rempel Patrick. “This group of dedicated runners is an honour to work with. This event not only raises critical funds but also shines a light on the emotional journey many cancer patients face.”

Funds raised through the Longest Night Run support cancer patients from 88 communities across southern Manitoba. Donations help cover transportation to medical appointments, parking costs, and other incidentals not covered by the medical system. The funds also support cancer support groups, wellness programs, head coverings, assistance with lymphedema treatments, and other essential services.

First “Wishes of Hope” Granted to Southeast Manitoba Child Completing Cancer Treatment Southeast Cancer Support Services (SCSS) has granted the inaugural wish through its new “Wishes of Hope” program, giving a local family a chance to rest and create joyful memories after a challenging year of cancer treatment.

The first wish was granted to Hannah, a two-year-old from Southeast Manitoba who was diagnosed with cancer at just one year old.

Hannah endured more than a year of treatment, including extensive surgery at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, placing significant emotional and financial strain on her parents and four older siblings.

With treatment complete and Hannah regaining her strength, SCSS helped the family enjoy a short getaway to Grand Forks. The family stayed at Canad Inns in a spacious family suite with full access to the waterpark, generously provided by the hotel. Gift cards for fuel and meals were also provided, allowing the family to fully relax and enjoy their time together without additional stress.

Hannah’s parents, Andreas and Nelli, expressed their gratitude: “A big thanks to all the sponsors that made this trip happen! This trip was a blast for our family and we really enjoyed it. It meant a lot to us! Especially after being through such a hard and tough year with our daughter, we felt the warmth and love from people that really cared and gave this gift to Hannah and our whole family.”

SCSS plans to continue granting wishes to local families affected by cancer, helping ensure hope, comfort, and moments of joy remain possible even during the most difficult times.

Wildlife Haven Seeks Public Support as Injured Waterfowl Stranded for Winter

By Dan Guetre Wildlife Haven’s hospital is currently at capacity as it cares for an unprecedented number of injured waterfowl unable to migrate south, according to Executive Director Zoe Nakata.

Nakata said many of the birds now making up what staff call their “winter flock” should be thousands of kilometres into their migration, but are stranded in Manitoba due to human-caused injuries and habitat loss. Unable to fly, the birds cannot survive the winter without intensive care.

Among the patients are a young pelican with a wing injury sustained in a crash, an orphaned and weakened merganser, a scaup suffering from malnutrition linked to habitat loss, and two Canada geese injured by gunfire — one with a pellet lodged in its leg and another with a fractured wing bone.

“These birds are in trouble because of us,” Nakata said, noting their recovery requires heated enclosures, species-specific diets, veterinary treatment, and months of rehabilitation before they can be released back into the wild.

Wildlife Haven is asking for public support to help provide medical care, warm shelter and nutritious food to carry the birds through winter and prepare them for spring release. A donation of $50, or any amount, helps fund treatment and rehabilitation efforts.

Manitobans Invited to Share Priorities Through Budget 2026 Survey and Consultations The 2026 provincial budget, set to be released in the spring, will outline the government’s funding priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. Manitobans are encouraged to complete a short online survey available at engagemb.ca/budget-2026. The survey will remain open until Feb. 21, 2026.

In addition to the online survey, the province will host several in-person and telephone town hall meetings in the new year to gather public input.

However, residents from southeastern Manitoba who wish to attend in person will need to travel outside the region or participate via telephone, as no in-person sessions are scheduled locally.

The organization has also reported a 25 per cent increase in patient numbers this year, with staff caring for a growing list of injured and orphaned wildlife, including fox kits, otters, a snapping turtle and a young lynx.

Hope for 2026 Hope is one of those words that conjures up expectation, possibility, and certainty, that things can be different.

Hope gives us the confidence to imagine what could be.

Hope is my word for 2026- it lifts our eyes and casts a vision for a better tomorrow. Canadians need hope.

Recent polling shows that the cost of living is the top issue for voters.

After 10 years of Liberal leadership, grocery bills have doubled and food inflation in Canada is rising more than twice the rate than the United States.

Even more troubling, a record 2.2 million Canadians relied on food banks last year, including 712,000 children.

Families are expected to spend almost $1,000 more on groceries in 2026, averaging $338 per week or $17,571 annually. Today, one in four Canadian households are considered food insecure. With Christmas behind us, incoming credit card bills and seasonal expenses coming due will only ampli-

fy already stretched budgets.

In a recent Abacus poll, Canadians were asked which party they trust most to address the affordability issue. The consensus was clear: 42% of Canadians trust Conservatives to tackle the cost of living compared to just 29% who choose Mark Carney’s Liberals. Similarly, the trend appears on issues of crime and immigration where Conservatives continue to hold a strong lead over the Liberals for public trust in these issues. Canadians are recognizing that Conservatives have not stopped fighting for the issues that matters most to them.

Some solutions are straightforward.

A study conducted by Dalhousie University confirmed that the industrial carbon tax is undermining the competitiveness to Canada’s agri-food sector compared to the United States.

According to Statistics Canada, prices for everyday staples - From cookies to coffee to beef to lettuce have in-

creased between 7.8% to 36.4%. This is not inevitable. Conservatives have put forward a motion to lower the cost of food by cutting the industrial carbon tax, the food packaging tax, the clean fuel standard tax and reversing inflationary deficits. Unfortunately, the motion was voted down by Liberal opposition.

But that doesn’t mean Conservatives won’t back down. Even when our ideas are dismissed or ignored by Liberal opposition, they take hold in the hearts and minds of Canadians as possibilities. By casting a vision of hope, Canadians are imagining a future with food security – one that supports home

ownership, that envisions safe and secure neighbourhoods, stimulates creativity and innovation, invests in young people and restores their confidence that their future belongs here Canada.

So, what does 2026 hold? After ten years of what many have called the lost decade, Canadians are feeling the consequences. This past Christmas made that reality clear. Dinner tables were emptier, grocery bills had doubled, parents and seniors were shocked at the check out and fewer gifts were under the tree. To preserve the season, 67% of parents sacrificed their own future while facing a record-breaking

hunger crisis.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Next

Christmas can be different. Hope is real and achievable. Conservatives have a plan to restore affordability and opportunity, and we will continue to cast that vision – at every opportunity – for a better way forward

La Verendrye MLA Criticizes NDP Failures as Legislature Wraps Up Fall Session

La Vérendrye MLA Konrad Narth, Progressive Conservative Critic for Agriculture, Economic Development, and Jobs, says Manitoba has fallen further behind under the New Democratic Party government following the conclusion of the fall legislative session.

“Manitobans are struggling to afford the basic essentials of life,” Narth said, citing groceries and household costs. He criticized the NDP for failing to implement meaning-

ful affordability measures, claiming that only Progressive Conservatives raised the issue and offered “common sense solutions,” which he says were blocked by the government.

Narth also highlighted growing concerns around crime. “Manitobans don’t feel safe, because they are not safe,” he said, noting that Manitoba’s murder rate has increased by 22 per cent under the NDP. He criticized the government for rejecting PC proposals to amend self-defence laws to

PCs and Manitobans Bid Farewell to Veteran MLA and Former Premier Kelvin Goertzen After 22 years of public service, Steinbach MLA and former Manitoba Premier Kelvin Goertzen has announced he will not seek re-election in the next provincial election, prompting tributes from across the Progressive Conservative Party and the province.

Goertzen was first elected to represent Steinbach in 2003 and subsequently re-elected in 2007, 2011, 2016, 2019, and 2023. Over his long career, he served as an Opposition Critic, senior Cabinet Minister, and Premier of Manitoba following Brian Pallister’s retirement in 2021.

“It is with a heart filled with gratitude that I announce today that I will not be seeking re-election in the next provincial election,” Goertzen said. “I could never have imagined that I would have the opportunities that I have been given in provincial politics. It is a testament to the greatness of Manitoba and the people who call it home.”

Official Opposition Leader Obby Khan praised Goertzen’s long-standing service and leadership. “I want to thank Kelvin for his years of dedicated service to the people of Steinbach and all of Manitoba,” Khan said. “I revere Kelvin’s counsel. His insight and understanding of the political landscape are unparalleled.”

would allow municipalities to set local speed limits, recognizing renowned local artist Eddy Cobiness, and being appointed Critic for Agriculture and Economic Development.

Project FeederWatch Encourages Canadians to Connect With Birds Through Winter

By Dan Guetre As winter settles in and the outdoors grows quiet, many Canadians are finding comfort and connection in the simple act of watching birds. Project FeederWatch, a long-running citizen science program led by Birds Canada, is once again inviting people to observe and record the birds visiting their yards, balconies and neighbourhoods.

Now in its 39th season, Project FeederWatch runs through April 30, 2026, bringing together tens of thousands of participants across Canada and North America. The program asks volunteers to count birds at their feeders or nearby outdoor spaces and submit their observations online or through the FeederWatch app, helping scientists build a detailed picture of winter bird populations.

But organizers say the experience goes well beyond data collection.

“Project FeederWatch

isn’t just about counting birds, it’s about noticing them,” said Olivia Carvalho, Birds Canada’s Project FeederWatch coordinator. “When people begin to recognize the chickadees that come every morning or the finches

that arrive with the snow, they’re building a relationship with nature right outside their window.

That awareness can be grounding and also spark a deeper connection with wildlife, especially during winter.”

For many participants, FeederWatch becomes a weekly ritual during the colder months. Families often take part together, sharing the experience across generations, while others say the program helps them stay connect-

ed to nature when the days are short and the landscape feels grey.

Participation is open to everyone, regardless of experience level. A traditional bird feeder is not required — observers can take part from a bal-

cony, backyard, or even by watching trees and shrubs outside their window. What participants often enjoy most are the small moments of activity: a nuthatch darting in ahead of a blue jay, a flock of waxwings appearing suddenly, or the first hints of spring migration.

“Project FeederWatch is a great way to learn your backyard birds — you don’t need to be an expert to participate,” Carvalho added. “Every count tells a story, and every story connects us to birds, to science, and to each other.”

Registration for Project FeederWatch is now open through Birds Canada. Participants receive access to online tools and resources to help identify birds and record observations, as well as updates and stories from fellow FeederWatchers across the continent.

Watch for Thin Ice, Guy Wires and Hazards on the Trail With more than 10,000 km of groomed trails, wonderful scenery and friendly people, Manitoba is a great place to snowmobile, hike and ski. Listen to the weather forecast before starting out, and whether you are going out for an hour, or for several days, watch out for hazards.

When out on the trail, remember these rules to ensure you get home safe: - Pack a first aid kit, a cell phone, water, and supplies such as a knife, compass, matches, flashlight, whistle, and food for emergencies. If you’re snowmobiling, pack a repair kit with items such as a spare belt, spark plugs, tools, and a tow rope, in case you get stuck or break down.

- Dress for the elements by wearing layers and full gear every time you go out, the weather can change quickly, and layers can be removed. When snowmobiling, reflective decals on your back, arms, and helmet are a good idea too, as they make you more visible in dark or foggy conditions.

- Keep your equipment maintained and inspect it before you set out.

- Stay off rivers and lakes whenever possible, particularly if there is a generating station or hydro dam in the area. Fluctuating water levels and currents may result in unstable ice conditions.

• Watch out for guy wires attached to hydro poles. Sometimes guy wires can be hard to see if they’re buried under the snow or if their reflective markers have been damaged or removed. Darkness, fog or snow can increase the danger.

When snowmobiling, keep your speed down so you have time to see and react to any obsta-

cles in your path; drive according to weather conditions.

- Stay on the trail; do not trespass. Private property and unmarked terrain can contain unexpected hazards. Remember to go out with a friend, and as a safety precaution, always let someone know where you’re planning to go and what time you will be back.

- Don’t drink alcohol, pack water or hot beverages instead. Even a couple of alcoholic drinks can impair your perception and your safety.

If the Lights Go Out, Are You Ready?

We can’t predict if or when the power will go out. Most outages are short, but past severe weather events have knocked out power for several days over wide areas. Be prepared this winter with a well-stocked emergency kit containing essential items that will help you and your family weather any storm.

Items include: - flashlight and extra batteries; - portable, battery-powered radio and extra batteries; - portable USB phone charger and a car charger for mobile devices; - bottled water; - canned or dried food, including food for your pet; - manual can opener; - extra blankets; - candles and matches; - first aid kit; - paper plates, paper towels, plastic ware; - games, playing cards, crossword puzzles, etc. to keep you and your family occupied.

Other supplies may include firewood and an extra propane tank or briquettes for your

barbecue if you plan to cook outdoors during an outage.

Never operate fuel-burning equipment indoors, as poisonous carbon monoxide gas can build up quickly. Exposure to carbon monoxide causes flulike symptoms and can result in death.

HEARTeam, a volunteer water search and rescue organization, assisted Steinbach RCMP and the La Broquerie Fire Department in the response. Official Opposition Leader Wayne Ewasko urged Premier Wab Kinew’s government to take immediate action as potential U.S. tariffs threatened Manitoba’s economy. Ewasko called for an emergency legislative debate and the creation of an all-party committee to develop an economic response plan ahead of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s January 20 inauguration. He warned that new tariffs could impact jobs, household costs, and economic stability, stressing that Manitobans needed reassurance their government was prepared to act proactively rather than react after damage occurred.

RCMP Federal Policing launched regular Black Hawk helicopter patrols along Manitoba’s border with the United States in mid-January. The flights target illegal crossings, human smuggling, and the trafficking of drugs and contraband. Officers onboard can respond quickly and direct ground patrols to suspicious activity. RCMP emphasized the flights are routine operations and pose no public safety risk. Officials said the added aerial surveillance significantly strengthens border detection and rapid response capabilities.

Kleefeld Daycare Project Faced Financial and Logistical Challenges

The Kleefeld Daycare Project encountered financial and procedural challenges during construction, according to RM of Hanover Chief Financial Officer Derek Decru. The daycare was built under a previous provincial program using modular designs supplied

by JQ Build. Hanover ultimately contributed about $295,000 in expected and unexpected costs, cre-

Recycling Incentive Program a Huge Success in RM of Piney The RM of Piney reported strong participation in its Recycling Incentive Program, with recycling volumes increasing by 28.8 per cent in 2024. Data showed collections rose from 53,511 kilograms in 2023 to 68,913 kilograms in 2024. Municipal officials thanked residents for their commitment to waste reduction and environmental stewardship. The RM said the program reflects a growing community focus on sustainability and plans to build on the program’s momentum in the years ahead.

June 2025 Concrete Canoes Compete at National Event in St. Malo

St. Malo Provincial Park hosted the Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition, marking the first time in its 30-year history the event was held west of Ontario. Teams raced canoes made of specially engineered concrete, judged on design, construction, and performance. State of Emergency Declared After Massive Wildfire A fast-moving wildfire near Woodridge burned more than 8,900 hectares, prompting evacuations and a state of emergency in southeast Manitoba. Cyclists Ride Through History in First Dawson Trek Event

The inaugural Dawson Trek cycling event was declared a success as dozens of riders travelled 96 kilometres along Canada’s oldest trail.

Beginning at dawn in Winnipeg, cyclists followed the historic Dawson Trail through Prairie Grove, Ste. Anne, Richer, and beyond, supported by volunteers providing snacks, hydration, and safety monitoring.

Niverville Opens Station Lands Heritage Park

RM of Stuartburn Considered for Dark Sky Preserve Status The Manitoba government committed $354,000 to support Phase 2 of Ste. Anne’s Traverse Road active transportation project through the Manitoba GRO program.

The project includes a new walking and cycling path from Centrale Avenue to the Clearview Co-op grocery store, along with drainage and storm sewer upgrades.

Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with completion targeted for late summer or fall 2026.

Piney Thanks Neighbouring Fire Departments for Wildfire Support The RM of Stuartburn is being considered as Manitoba’s second Dark Sky Preserve, recognizing its naturally dark night skies. Local advocates say limited light pollution allows residents and visitors to experience exceptional nighttime views. While participation requires no formal commitments from landowners, residents are encouraged to reduce light pollution to support the designation.

The RM of Piney publicly thanked neighbouring fire departments for their assistance during the spring 2025 wildfires. In a letter to surrounding municipalities, Reeve Wayne Anderson praised firefighters who worked long hours under dangerous conditions to protect Piney communities. He highlighted the importance of inter-municipal cooperation and credited quick, coordinated action with preventing further damage during extreme fire conditions. Many councils shared the letter publicly in recognition of their fire departments’ efforts.

Sgt. Scott Badiuk of Sainte-Anne Police received Manitoba’s Excellence in Policing Award for leadership during 2025 wildfire evacuations. The force deployed officers to the Leila congregate shelter, providing 24-hour supervision while maintaining full policing duties locally. Over 1,500 hours were contributed, including 900 volunteer hours by Auxiliary members. Badiuk’s 15+ years of experience, including seven in First Nations policing, were highlighted for fostering trust, compassion, and effective crisis management.

Narth Introduces Bill 222 to Give Communities Control Over Speed Limits on Provincial Roads La Vérendrye MLA Konrad Narth has introduced private member’s Bill 222, legislation he says will improve public safety by giving local communities greater authority over speed limits on provincial roads within urban areas.

Bill 222, formally titled The Highway Traffic Amendment Act (Speed Limits on Provincial Roads), was introduced in the Manitoba Legislature on Thursday, Dec. 4. If passed, the bill would amend the Highway Traffic Act to allow local traffic authorities — such as municipalities and First Nations — to set speed limits on provincial roads that run through their communities.

“As a former municipal councillor, over the years I’ve seen how growth has outpaced the regulatory process,” Narth said. “This common-sense piece of legislation will help to resolve this disconnect.”

The bill is based on a resolution put forward by the Association of Manitoba Municipalities and aims to

address concerns raised by communities where provincial highways pass directly through town centres.

“Road safety is always a concern, especially when you have provincial highways coming right through the middle of town, as many Manitoba communities do,” Narth said.

He pointed to Marchand, Manitoba, as one example, where a change to a speed zone resulted in traffic moving at 100 kilometres per hour alongside a heavily used pedestrian sidewalk. Narth said similar concerns have been raised by numerous rural municipalities, citing instances where provincial traffic authorities have made changes or refused requests to adjust speed zones without consulting local officials.

Under current legislation, final authority over speed limits on provincial roads rests solely with the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“This is a major public safety concern,” Narth said, criticizing the lack of action

under the existing framework.

Another example raised by Narth involved New Bothwell, where a rural municipality attempted to establish a school speed zone but was required by the province to remove it because the road was designated as a provincial highway.

“It just makes sense,” Narth said. “Local traffic authorities — RMs and First Nations — are better qualified to set speed limits within their jurisdictions than the Minister of Transport or the Department of Transportation, because those who live in the community better understand the needs of their communities.”

Narth said the Progressive Conservative caucus believes municipalities should have the authority to set their own speed limits and that Bill 222 would empower them to do so.

“I just hope members of the government will summon some common sense and agree with this common sense bill,” he added.

Ritchot Launches Free EnerGuide Home Evaluation Program Homeowners and landlords in the Rural Municipality of Ritchot have a new opportunity to improve energy efficiency and reduce household costs through a free EnerGuide home evaluation program.

The RM of Ritchot, with support from Efficiency Manitoba, is offering free pre-retrofit EnerGuide home evaluations to eligible residents as part of a limited-time initiative. The professional assessment, typically valued at $550 for out-of-town inspections, will be provided at no cost to up to 100 qualifying house-

holds.

A pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation measures how a home uses energy and identifies opportunities to save energy and reduce monthly utility bills. During the on-site visit, a registered energy advisor will assess insulation levels, windows and exterior doors, heating and cooling systems, and the overall air tightness of the home.

If an application is approved, the RM of Ritchot will contact participants directly to schedule their free pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation.

Municipal officials say the program is intended to help residents better understand their home’s energy performance while supporting longterm sustainability and affordability.

Steinbach Arts Council Seeks Performers for New Community Musical “Broadway Moments” A Cappella Vocal Ensemble Proximus 5 Announces Concert and Collaboration with SRSS Chamber Choir The Steinbach Arts Council (SAC) is thrilled to present Proximus 5, a dynamic five-voice male a cappella ensemble in a special concert event featuring local talent on Friday, February 6, 2026, 7:00 PM at Grace Mennonite Church.

Known for their focus on “proximity” and community connection, Proximus 5 creates closeness with audiences through poignant harmonies and heartfelt performances. The ensemble offers a versatile program ranging from classical works to contemporary pop hits, promising a cathartic experience for all attendees. The group’s members boast over a century of combined professional performing experience in some of Canada’s finest choirs. In their five years as a group, they have performed as featured festival artists and in sold-out shows across Manitoba and at Podium, the national choral conference in Montreal.

“We’re excited to bring Proximus 5 to our audience. Southeast Manitoba has a strong choral tradition, and we know this concert will resonate with our community,” says Tara Schellenberg, Performing Arts Coordinator at SAC. “We’re also pleased to present this concert at Grace Mennonite Church, which is an excellent setting for choral music and allows us to welcome a larger audience. The Chamber Choir has an outstanding reputation in Steinbach and beyond, frequently performing at community concerts and events. As part of the visit, Proximus 5 will also conduct a workshop with the high school students to support their musical growth and connection.

According to SRSS Chamber Choir Director, Kristel Peters: “We are excited to hear and work with Proximus 5 and thank the Steinbach Arts Council for this opportunity!”

The Steinbach Arts Council (SAC) has announced an open audition call for its upcoming community musical production, Broadway Moments, set to take the SRSS Theatre stage from March 19 to 21.

Broadway Moments is a revue-style show featuring highlights from the past decade of SAC productions alongside iconic Broadway favourites. The production celebrates memorable songs, standout characters, and performances that showcase the talent of the Southeast Manitoba community.

Directed by Kristy Penner and David Klassen, the production is seeking a diverse cast of performers for a variety of roles. SAC encourages both experienced performers and newcomers to musical theatre to audition.

A healthy, and yes, even an exciting democracy makes room for each of us to unite in common cause.

Here at home and abroad, Canadians have a tradition of digging deep within themselves while fighting for justice, fairness, inclusion and equality. Canadians have an inherent 6th sense to choose when it is necessary to stand by and when it is imperative to stand up.

With that said, your critical thinking skills are now needed more than ever. Your clarity is under threat with unchecked artificial intelligence (A.I.).

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has noted more foreign interference along with the RCMP who are very busy tracking criminals and monitoring trouble makers looking to stir the pot.

We are taking notice too. With all of the digital tools at our disposal, it’s allowing more haters into our lives through A.I. driven algorithms.

If you are on any form of social media – then you are a witness to this art of manipulation.

With the power of A.I., developers have become very effective in their myriad of methods to imprison us by elevating our fears, bombarding us with visual and verbal abuse, and inciting some of us to, not only hate, but to actually cause physical harm.

It is easier to manipulate and persuade us to do the opposite of what is fundamentally good.

This is not the time where you

should stand by. This time it’s all about standing up.

This petition asks us to acknowledge the risks to an individual’s rights, privacy, and safety due to digital deepfakes from A.I. tools; seeks to include an individual’s right to their own body and voice in Copy Right laws; and is looking to ensure enforcement mechanisms are in place at a federal level to support individual’s rights to their likeness.

This petition looks to establish a National Living Benefit for Canadians with disabilities and seniors who receive a guaranteed income above the official poverty line that is protected from provincial clawbacks or deductions; and is indexed annually to the Canadian Consumer Price Index (CPI) so that the basic income is not reduced due to inflation or rising housing costs.

If you haven’t heard of the Parliament e-Petitions or signed up yet, I hope you do. It’s a great way of keeping our democracy open and transparent.

To sign up you must be a Canadian citizen or resident of Canada - and there is no minimum age! To create your account, go to www. ourcommons.ca/petitions.

Parliament e-Petitions were implemented back in 2015 and it allows more of us to stand up and take part in the decision making.

Amazing Things Happen It’s that time of year again; the old year is gone, and a new year is upon us. This is the time when many people make New Year’s resolutions. They resolve they will stop doing what they’ve done in the past and start living a better life. They will eat healthier, treat their family better, do a better job at work etc. They are determined to have old things pass away and to make all things new.

Psychologists tell us to just believe in ourselves, that you can do a better job. We have the power within us to improve.

But the Bible tells us the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked. Psalms 14:3 tells us about human nature, “They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” We don’t like to accept this diagnosis of the nature of man. Not everyone does bad things all the time. So how do we explain that?

When God made us, He made us in His image. Sin spoiled that image, but when we do good things, it is because of the goodness of God. James 1:17 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights.” (God) So, does that mean man can’t do anything right? Yes and No. If we yield ourselves to God and let Him do His work through us, then man is capable of doing great things. But if he leaves God out of his life and tries to go it on his own – his life will fail.

But you say Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ…” Yes, we can do all things through Christ. The key to doing all things is “through Christ.” When you see “through” in the KJV Bible, then the work is all done by the word that follows.

Therefore, it is Christ that does all the work, as we yield to Him. Ephesians 2:10 says we are His workmanship. As we let Him work on us and through us, then amazing things can happen in our life.

So, at the start of 2026, determine to yield yourself to God this year, and instead of you making all the changes, let God do it for you.

Sprague RCMP Recover Body of Missing Fisherman on Lake of the Woods The body of a missing 71-year-old man has been recovered from Lake of the Woods following a multi-agency search effort, according to Manitoba RCMP. Sprague RCMP received a report at approximately 8:50 p.m. on December 16 of a missing man from Buffalo Point First Nation who had gone out earlier that day on a side-by-side to his ice fishing shack on Lake of the Woods. The fishing shack was located about five kilometres north of the Buffalo Point Marina.

RCMP officers immediately attended the area to assess the situation.

However, due to poor weather conditions, limited daylight and areas of open water, officers were unable to safely conduct a physical search on the ice at that time.

On the morning of December 17, RCMP Search and Rescue teams attended Buffalo Point First Nation to assist in the search. An RCMP drone was deployed and conducted an aerial search, locating side-byside tracks leading from the shoreline to the fishing shack and then continuing toward a pressure ridge in the ice.

Police believe the side-by-side went through the ice at the pressure ridge, with the driver unable to exit the vehicle before it submerged.

On December 19, the Winnipeg Police Service Underwater Recovery Team recovered the body of the missing man from Lake of the Woods.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team had been deployed to another operation in Grand Rapids and was unavailable at the time.

Manitoba RCMP expressed their thanks to the Winnipeg Police Service for their assistance in the recovery operation.

Sprague RCMP Investigate Stabbing that Sent a 52-year-old Male to Hospital Sprague RCMP Investigate Stabbing that Sent a 52-year-old Male to Hospital On December 2 at 12:45 pm, Sprague RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing in Carrick, located in the RM of Piney.

Officers attended immediately and were advised that the victim had been driven to Woodridge where they met with EMS at a business on Provincial Road 210.

Upon arrival, Police learned that a 52-year-old male had been stabbed in the neck and mouth by an acquaintance at a residence in Carrick. The victim was then transported to hospital via STARS where he immediately went into surgery.

At 1:13 pm, Sprague RCMP received a report from CN Railway indicating that they could see a male damaging railroad crossing arms in Carrick. Officers responded immediately and were flagged down by a truck travelling on Provincial Road 203. The truck had picked up a male on the side of the road who was acting strange.

The male inside the truck matched the description of the suspect from the stabbing as well as the CN Rail report and was immediately arrested

by Police.

Kerry Hiebert, 38-year-old from Steinbach, was charged and remanded into custody. He faces the following offences - aggravated assault, assault with weapon and two counts of mischief over $5,000.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP Investigating Woman’s Suspicious Death RCMP Investigate Criminal Harassment that Leads to Firearm Charges On October 8, at 3 pm, Oakbank RCMP responded to a complaint on Willowdale Road in the RM of Springfield. A 53-year-old female reported that her power had been purposely disconnected at her home.

The victim advised police that this was the second time this had occurred, the first taking place on July 31, leading her to believe that she was being targeted.

The investigation led to identification of a suspect, a 54-year-old male, and a subsequent seizure of firearms from a residence located in the RM of Springfield. The firearms were found improperly stored.

Officers also learned that some the suspect’s firearms were not accounted for as per his firearms licence and a Warrant of Arrest was issued.

On October 14, the Manitoba RCMP East District Crime Reduction Enforcement Team (CREST) located Bradley Watchorn, 54, and executed the warrant of arrest. He was charged with Criminal harassment and Unsafe storage of a firearm and released on conditions.

On December 10, RCMP officers with Manitoba RCMP East District CREST, Emergency Response Team and from the Powerview Detachment executed a search warrant at a residence located on Zebrun Road in the RM of Alexander.

Bradley Watchorn was arrested a second time without incident. The search led to the seizure of additional firearms and ammunition contrary to his release conditions.

Watchorn was remanded into custody and further charged with Unsafe storage of a firearm x 2 and Fail to comply with an undertaking x 2.

The execution of the warrant led to the seizure of three restricted firearms, 16 rifles and ammunition.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP Investigating Woman’s Suspicious Death On December 24 at approximately 8:25 am, St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP were dispatched to St. Malo following a report of an unresponsive female being located inside a residence within the town.

Upon arrival, officers located a deceased 55-year-old female from St. Malo. The death is considered suspicious and being investigated by Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, with assistance from Forensic Identification Services and St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP. Anyone with information is asked to contact St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP at 204-433-7908, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a secure tip online at manitobacrimestoppers.com.

Single Vehicle Collision Proves Fatal Single Vehicle Collision Proves Fatal On December 6 at 6:25 am, Whitemouth RCMP responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 307, 2 kms north of the junction of Highway 44 in the Whiteshell Provincial Park.

The vehicle was found on its passenger side in the west ditch, and the female driver was laying outside the vehicle.

The 27-year-old female, from the Whiteshell Provincial Park, was transported to hospital via STARS with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators have determined that the collision occurred between the hours of 3:15 am, when she was last seen, and 6:15 am when she was found.

The driver later succumbed to her injuries.

Steinbach RCMP Respond to Fatal Snowmobile Collision On December 26 at 11:50 am, Steinbach RCMP received a report of a snowmobile collision near a residence located on Carriere Drive W, in the RM of La Broquerie.

Officers attended to the scene and located a 41-year-old male, from the RM of La Broquerie, requiring medical attention to which they provided until EMS arrived. The victim was transported to hospital via STARS Air Ambulance where he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators believe the victim was operating his snowmobile on private property when he lost control of his machine and crossed over the roadway and collided with the embankment on the opposite side. The victim, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from his snowmobile where he sustained life-threatening injuries.

A New Year

Hello readers! Another Christmas is behind us and a brand new year is opening up before us. For me, this is always an exciting time of year. No, I’m not a person that makes up New Year’s Resolutions. After all, why feel pressured to make up resolutions that are most likely going to be broken within a couple of weeks? Sure, maybe one may stick but I’d just sooner create goals and build healthy habits throughout the year instead of at a time when everyone else is expecting you to.

Each day of a year is a great time to start improving yourself and the situations that you may find yourself in.

To reflect for a moment, I would just like to say that this past Christmas was a very low-key affair

for my family and me. There were only a couple of gifts each and most of the holiday was spent with my wife and children, which is good because they are my favourite people in the world. My wife made us a delicious Christmas supper and we spent the day hanging out with each other and generally having a great day.

One of my goals, or habits, if you will, is to write more. This is something that I struggle with during the warm, summer months. There is just so much to do during those long, sunny days that I find myself far away from my keyboard. The problem is that when the cold weather hits and I find myself indoors more often, I am out of practise for sitting down and writing. This is a habit that I’ve been working on for years and I can say that right now, this winter has been a great one when it comes to banging out the words of my creations. I’ll be sure to let you know when my novel hits the shelves.

So, if you’ve made resolutions or if you are working at building better habits throughout the year, I would like to encourage you to keep on going. Keep pushing through the hard times and we’ll see you on the other side. We’ll all be the better for it!

“Manitobans may feel like they know all about snow and ice, but the reality is that RCMP respond to a number of serious incidents on roadways, every winter that could have been prevented,” said Sgt. Mark Hume, of the RCMP North West Traffic Services. “We want everyone to stay safe this winter by being prepared, driving to conditions and respecting closed highways.”

Already this winter, there has been a number of vehicle collisions that can be attributed – at least partially – to motorists failing to drive to conditions. As cooler temperatures and snowy conditions continue to blow through the province, those incidents are likely to be compounded in the coming weeks with incidents involving snowmobiles.

There are a number of things Manitobans can do to stay safe: - Check the forecast before heading out. Knowing what the weather is going to be like can better inform your decision-making, including whether you should be driving. Checking highway conditions at manitoba511.ca is a good idea if planning to hit the highway, as is making someone else aware of your travel plans.

Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle before you hit the road, as snow blowing off a roof can be a hazard to both yourself and other drivers. Make sure your cellphone is charged, in case you need to call someone for help.

- Drivers, slow down. Speed limits are set for ideal conditions, not winter weather. Slow down and increase your following distance on icy or snowy roads. Be aware that conditions are generally just as slippery at 0 C than when it’s -20 C or below, and ice usually forms on bridges and overpasses before roads.

- Dress to the conditions. If you are heading out on the road during winter, be prepared. Ensure everyone in the vehicle has winter clothing in case your vehicle gets stuck or you need to pull over due to highway conditions.

- Drive sober and without distraction. No matter the time of year, never drive a vehicle, snowmobile, or ATV while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Before heading out, find a designated driver or plan to take public transit, a taxi or rideshare service home. Similarly, put your cellphone down when behind the wheel.

La Broquerie Businesses Invited to Explore New Avenue for Skilled Workers Local businesses in La Broquerie are being invited to explore new opportunities to strengthen their workforce through a free, personalized workshop aimed at connecting employers with qualified and diverse talent from Canada and abroad.

The Conseil de développement économique des municipalités bilingues du Manitoba (CDEM), in partnership with the Association des municipalités bilingues du Manitoba (AMBM), will host the session as part of efforts to support business growth and address ongoing labour shortages.

The workshop is designed to help employers access skilled candidates while receiving structured guidance from CDEM business development professionals.

According to a recent study of Manitoba’s business community, employers continue to express a strong need to connect with qualified talent and to receive more hands-on support in business development. In response, CDEM’s 2025 Strategic Plan places a renewed focus on delivering dynamic programming and enhanced services to bilingual municipalities.

Through this initiative, CDEM and AMBM aim to strengthen the local labour market by building closer connections between employers in the La Broquerie region and CDEM’s employment and business development services, ensuring business needs are met more effectively.

The hands-on workshop will focus on strategies to attract diverse talent, strengthen existing workforces, and drive sustainable business growth. It will be facilitated by Nina Condo, a recognized Manitoba expert in diversity and inclusion, with additional support from CDEM specialists. Participants will gain access to practical tools and proven approaches to help position their businesses for long-term success.

The workshop will take place on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the HyLife Centre (Arena), located at 22 Arena St. in La Broquerie. Light refreshments will be provided, and space is limited.
