01. RESILIENCE OF FORT Architectural design thesis project

PROJECT TYPE : Heritage resort and visitor center AREA OF INTERVENTION : Madikeri fort complex, Coorg, Karnataka AREA : Overall site area-16 acres (66800 sq.m); Built-5500sqm Open-4000sqm The thesis explores the transformation of a historic building (fort complex) with respect to its conservation, restoration and the application of volumetric reconstruction.

As explained in Aldo Rossi’s book, ‘The Architecture of the City’, the concept of permanence represents architecture as a living phenomenon and a process of creating history over a period of time through transformation. The transformation of historic structures is the course which keeps buildings alive, instead of becoming a dead memory from the past. The important part involved in transformation is to find a suitable use. When the form and the use have strong compatibility, then the building tend to have a positive sense that people can relate to through its use.

The volumetric reconstruction involves taking inspiration from original elements and components, but avoids mimetic reconstruction of these elements. Instead, it can involve the use of new materials and expressions, offering a modern interpretation on a historic craft.

The objective of this study is to investigate the aspects of transformation of the built heritage, how the new additions or the changes in the existing structure enrich the old in contemporary architectural practice as concept, and how the changes represent the cultural identity for the new era. The greatest impact of architecture arises significantly beyond the visual: the choreography of movement, distinct frames of perception and experience, evoking specific understanding and meaning.

SITE CONTEXT PLAN

The project focuses on rehabilitation of Madikeri fort complex. The fort complex that had a significant role in the past has undergone many layers of change and was left abandoned. Hence, the conservation and reconstruction can breathe new life into this aging piece of architectural history.

CONCEPTUAL SECTION HOLISTIC EXPERIENCE OF THE FORT The sensory experience of the environment is connected to the way the body moves through the space. Materialization of intangible aspects of the human mind will provide the user with a sense of familiarity and belonging DESIGN PROPOSAL: The proposed heritage centre features a heritage hotel along with a visitor and resource centre. The heritage centre will provide a holistic experience of the culture of Coorg to the tourists.

LANDSCAPE STRATEGIES - The landscape as a whole stiches the built component and the open together.

- Native plants are used for the ecological benifits and to enhance the heritage character of the place - They also effectively filter stormwater and greywater - Rain corridor and rain gardens - Water is used as a component which gives a sense of serenity.

02. DESIGN INSTITUTE Campus Design Project

PROJECT TYPE : Design Institute - Includes Fashion Design, Textile Design, Accessory Design SITE LOCATION : Near Kukkarahalli lake, Mysuru, Karnataka The intent was to create a flexible and dynamic spaces in the campus. The courtyards act as pause points between different functions. The campus has been conciously designed so as to reduce the number of existing trees that needs to be removed. Hence, the built-up spaces have been reduced and semi-open and oen spaces are provided.

The three departments of the institute have been placed in different blocks while they have been connected at horizontal levels. The library and cafeteria spaces have been designed to overlook the lake. The OAT is at a point where the admin and academic block converges. The pathways leading to various blocks tend to create view points at different levels.

03. TEA LOUNGE CAFE Interior Design Project

PROJECT TYPE : Cafe - Interior Design SITE LOCATION : Hypothetical Sereni.tea is a retail and a tasting room. It serves various kinds of hancrafted blends created in its tasting room.

The tea lounge has been designed to provide a relaxed mood to the customers. The store front is puncuated by bright modern open self display. Ample seating is provided on the periphery over looking the exterior landscape.

The ground floor is utilized for selling and serving tea which is open to ublic. The mezzanine floor is used for storage and private tea testing office.

05a. UMESH RESIDENCE Professional Training

PROJECT : UMESH RESIDENCE LOCATION : Talagatapura, Bengaluru SITE AREA : 1850 Sqft ENVISAGE ARCHITECTS Role: Intern architect A layout formed by a group of childhood friends with an intent to cohabit beyond the house walls and to bring back the pedestrian dominant street culture. Offbeat to other gated communities each house stands unique in terms of size, requirements and language of design where in the street acts as a common ground to bind them all into a community.

05b.HARSHA RESIDENCE Professional Training

PROJECT : HARSHA RESIDENCE LOCATION : Jayanagara, Bengaluru SITE AREA : 3200 Sqft ENVISAGE ARCHITECTS Role: Intern architect A five storey residence with one floor for the parents and the top three floors for the son’s family. The house is designed very conciously meeting all the requirements of the client with spacious living room,open kitchen, dining and bedrooms.

The dining area is a triple height space giving it a very open ambience. The design focuses on the deck and the landscaping in the interior space. The landscape elements not only improves the environment but also connects us back to the nature to have a healthy livestyle.

The Bheema’s canteen which served around 500 students of the campus is renovated into a higher efficiency building. The PEB structure is converted into a Dining hall which can cater to the students of the university with higher standards and other portion is being converted into a media and visual communication center.

This project is modelled using Revit(BIM) software.
