A YEAR IN DISCOVERY COLLEGE 2024 - 2025
YEARBOOK 2024-25
Having written a foreword to nine successive DC yearbooks, it feels quite momentous to be doing so for the final time ahead of the conclusion of my service as Principal this coming summer. I find myself full of gratitude for the years my family and I have enjoyed here at the College, and for the incredible support of the whole community during what has been the honour of my professional life to serve in this role. It has been a journey towards greater resilience as we have navigated challenges, including a global pandemic; greater coherence as we have embraced our through-school identity; and greater sustainability, as we have worked to ensure a strong footing for the College into the coming years. The yearbook is, as I have remarked in previous editions, a curious text in that it serves both an audience of immediate readers in the year it is printed, and also an audience of future readers who may be looking back many years hence to find their younger selves represented within its pages. I hope that, at

I wish everyone at Discovery College — our remarkable students, our dedicated staff, our supportive parents, and all our many partners in the wider community — all the very best for what will doubtless be the brightest of futures. Kind regards, James Smith Principal 2 | Grow. Discover. Dream.

Reading unlocks a world of imagination, knowledge, and lifelong learning. This year has seen the launch of our DC Dragons Reading Spine. This initiative introduces children to high-quality, diverse texts that spark curiosity and critical thinking and fosters a love for literature. Additionally, the adoption of the Read Write Inc. phonics programme ensures our younger children develop strong foundational skills in decoding and comprehension, empowering them to read fluently and confidently from an early age. By combining these approaches, we aim to nurture confident, fluent readers who not only excel academically but also find joy and empowerment through the written word.

Looking back, we are proud to say that we have accomplished a lot. It has been a cumulative journey of valuable experience and knowledge. Though this year has been challenging, we are, for sure, one more step into our future. Little did we know that the last 6 years in Primary were our foundation years and building blocks to this mega marathon of our Secondary transition. We had fun, learned, evolved through Primary and assumed we had everything scoped out but Secondary has been a huge change yet to be perceived in its fullest. Together, even be it small steps, we are soaring slowly trying to reach our glory and make known our presence. We navigated through the confusion and enormous change and fixated our vision and focus to adapt mode, thus learning to sustain, yet grow in our better form. We incorporated traditions such as House Week, IDU Week, Theatre Performances, Year 7 Pizza & Movie Night, Family Fun Day, No Boundaries Camp and Rock, Paper, Scissors tournaments that not only added enrichment to our learning portfolio but also taught us valuable lessons and created positive memories that would stay with us for life. We took risks and made mistakes. We converted each mistake into an opportunity for new possibilities and solutions and transitioned through changes successfully. I am so proud of my year group and I can’t wait to see what we achieve next! Year 8, we are coming! Liya Prashanth 7.3 and the Year 7 Ambassador Team

Year 8 was a fabulous year, not only for making tons of new friends, but events, trips, and memorable times. It allowed us to have unforgettable times with friends, giving us a chance to Grow, Discover and Dream. Giving us a chance to grow, the “30 Days of Kindness” challenged our kindness abilities. The activities included doing chores without being asked, spending time with family, cheering friends up during tough times, and more spirit-filled deeds. This challenge helped us become more empathetic, ultimately building our character. Then, in November, we had the chance to become independent where we could go on residential and overseas trips from camps in Hong Kong to the villages in China. No Boundaries has proven to be a wondrous experience for everyone. For IDU week, we were assigned to organise a range of activities that allowed us to embrace our hormones, like serotonins, endorphins, and dopamine. In late March, our lovely Dean and student leaders arranged a Year 8 Movie Night, where we devoured pizzas together. We watched MazeRunner, a thrilling and riveting film. It brought laughter and screams in the air, as we enjoyed a great afternoon together. The wonderful support from our Dean, Learning Advisors, and cohort leaders were amazing in forming Year 8 to what we know today. In conclusion, all the activities and support provided us a wonderful time in Discovery College as a Year 8 student. Oskar Tsing and Kairav Singh

year. They have not only assisted in running assemblies, but have created excellent extended wellbeing sessions, which have provided the whole cohort with tailored lessons
in Year 10.
Starting Year 9 can feel both daunting and exciting, as you step into a familiar yet uncertain environment. New faces, teachers, and shifting friendships can feel overwhelming at first. In August, Year 9 students experienced a mix of emotions, but as we near the end of the year, we’ve begun to reflect on our growth. Year 9 has been an unforgettable journey, filled with big events like No Boundaries and smaller, cherished moments like cozy movie nights. No Boundaries was a highlight, especially as it was our first time flying. From rock climbing to learning new languages and exploring different cultures, each student faced unique challenges. Split into groups, we traveled to incredible destinations like Malaysia, Vietnam, China, and Cambodia, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Another standout moment was the Year 9 Hunger Games Oscars. Over 5-7 weeks, we worked in groups to create film scenes inspired by The Hunger Games, using props, costumes, and cameras. Despite challenges, we all worked together and created something special. Watching the nominated films in the theatre was a fantastic way to start Term 2! Overall this year has been filled with unforgettable memories. To the students leaving, we wish you all the best. A huge thank you to our Dean, Ms Grant, and our Learning Advisors for their support, making this another successful year! Claire Lee

Year 10 has been an exciting adventure for our cohort. Our student body has truly taken every opportunity seizable and made the year so memorable for us all. From our class and learning team activities, Christmas party and Cobra sports opportunities, other school events and performances such as our ‘Night at the Cabaret’ performance, to an ACAMIS football trip and our recently reinstated No Boundaries overseas trips, Year 10 has shown such amazing commitment and dedication to everything they set out to achieve. The ambassadors and teachers of Year 10 really see the growth of our positive relationships with one another, finally stepping over this border to really see what everyone is passionate about in their own sense. As in previous years, we have always encouraged people to show their talents, and it really feels that we have built a safe and supportive environment this year. I am so honoured to be part of such an amazing and talented group of students and watch them Grow, Discover and Dream every day of this year, as well as seeing them share about the opportunities they are given and honour what they have achieved in every single assembly. Thank you so much for the amazing year, we are all so excited to see what comes next for our cohort in the final year of MYP after the summer, and what wonderful things you will all do next year. Thank you to our Learning Advisors, Ms Prosser and Ms Allen for your support, guidance and care this year. We appreciate all you do. Rory Berry (Year 10 Ambassador)

encouragement of Year 11 has been and will continue to be a pillar of support.
We all knew Year 11 would be challenging, but this? That was unexpected. As we step into the Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme, it’s essential to reflect on our journey here. With the end-of-year formal, personal project, work experience, and mock exams, this year has been jam-packed! Choosing subjects was stressful, but the taster sessions and ongoing conversations helped immensely. Whether opting for the Diploma Programme, the Career-related Programme, or courses, everyone showcased their unique interests through their choices. Among all the events, the overseas No Boundaries trip stands out as a highlight. From Malaysia to Taiwan, we immersed ourselves in new cultures and engaged in meaningful community engagement while having fun.

As this academic year wraps up, we celebrate completing the Middle Years Programme. In the face of change, we’ve matured as a cohort. This year has prepared us for the future, which may be unpredictable, but I believe we can handle whatever comes our way. With two more years ahead, there’s still so much to accomplish and many memories to create. A big thank you to our teachers, parents, and peers for helping us reach this point. Special thanks to our Learning Advisors, Mr Hansson, Ms Mitchell, Ms Fong, Ms Horogoda, and Mr Rydeard for your support. And of course, thank you, Ms Goodlad, for your tireless work as our Dean since Year 8, for supporting and helping us whenever a challenge occurs. We appreciate everything that has been done for us! next year, the best ever!
This year marked a significant milestone for our year group as we started our journey in the IB DP/CP programmes. It was a year filled with challenges, growth in knowledge, and amazing experiences. Transitioning into such a rigorous programme, we immediately learned the amount of time, effort, and practice we had to put in to benefit our future. One of the highlights for our year group was the No Boundaries initiative. Students from our year had the opportunity to explore different cultures and countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, and more! Each trip offered students the opportunity to engage in service projects in local communities and allow students to form new friendships. This trip is something that each Year 12 will never forget, considering it was our last No Boundaries trip during our time at DC. Through the beginning of this journey we all rose to the high academic demands, whilst also celebrating small wins and achievements. As we navigated through the beginning of this journey, our year group consistently maintained a positive spirit and attitude towards any challenges or hardships that were faced. We approached schoolwork and challenges with optimism and support for one another. We are excited to continue this journey and form new skills and connections and have an amazing time through our DP/CP journey together. Samaira Sehgal (Year 12 Ambassador)

As our chapter of school comes to a close, I am truly saddened to leave behind this amazing community of students, teachers, and staff who have made this experience so special and that I will never forget! It has been a special journey, during which our year group has grown together — always showing unity, kindness and support. In particular, the past nine months, which have brought many challenges, revealed the strength of our community spirit: we helped, motivated and encouraged each other, every step of the way. But none of this would have been possible without our dedicated teachers who have been extremely supportive in the DP and CP time — they supported us not only during class but also offered extra teaching sessions and personal guidance. They showed us that they genuinely care — not only about our academic success but also about us! I believe that our exceptional experience has prepared us very well for our next exciting chapter — not only academically but also personally. I hope each of us will bring a piece of the DC spirit wherever we go — sharing our values with new communities not only in the years ahead but also for many years to come. Carl Loeffler

Cobra Sports: A Year of Spirit, Strength, and Success This year, Cobra Sports has been more than just a programme. The Cobra spirit has echoed across every court, pitch, and pool, as students from Year 1 through to Year 13 proudly wore their Cobra Kit and gave their all. From the youngest players learning the values of teamwork and fair play, to our senior athletes competing at the highest level, Cobra Sports has truly brought our school community together. At the heart of the programme are our Core Sports — Football, Basketball, and Volleyball — which run across every year group. This consistent focus has built a strong foundation of skill, resilience, and camaraderie. The results have spoken for themselves: •
U19 Boys Volleyball – Champions at the ACAMIS tournament
•
U19 Boys & Girls Basketball – Dual ACAMIS Champions
•
U19 Girls Football – Triumphant at ACAMIS, showing true Cobra grit
•
U14 Boys Football (Division 1) - ISSFHK Winners
10-71_ESFDiscoveryCollegeYearbook202425_Primary-F
Beyond the courts and fields, our Secondary Swim Team made waves at the HKSSF Island Swimming Competition, demonstrating strength and determination with every stroke and setting personal bests across multiple events. Not to be outdone, our Primary athletes have also made their mark. The Year 3 & 4 Football teams showed great promise and sportsmanship throughout their fixtures. The Year 5 & 6 Basketball and Netball teams displayed impressive teamwork and spirit, laying the groundwork for future Cobra champions. This year’s Cobra Sports Programme has not only celebrated wins but has also championed the values that define us: discipline, determination, teamwork, and fair play. Whether on the scoreboard or in the hearts of our athletes, this has been a year to remember. Go Cobras.

BOYS BASKETBALL Our biggest sporting achievement at DC was the ACAMIS Basketball tournaments, where our dedication truly shone. Memorable moments included intense training sessions, exciting trips, and thrilling games, all while enjoying delicious meals together. Key players like Jack Ma, Ethan Mo, and Loring Li made significant contributions to our success. As a captain, my advice for future teams is to train hard, work together, and maintain discipline and commitment. Lastly, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr McLeay for his unwavering support, positive spirit, and immense sacrifices that played a vital role in our team’s achievements. Together, we created lasting memories and built a strong foundation for the future. Anthony Groot-Baltink

GIRLS BASKETBALL The DC Cobra girls’ basketball team achieved a remarkable milestone by winning ACAMIS in Xi’An China. Despite a challenging start to the season with many new players, our team developed significantly and grew closer together. The transformation has been inspiring, and even after the season ended, the team remains motivated to train 3 to 4 times a week. As captain, I see a strong foundation for future seasons. I encourage everyone to participate in Cobra sports for the incredible experiences and connections made. Our Coach, Mr McLeay, has gone above and beyond in supporting our team, helping us excel and step outside our comfort zones. He instilled valuable lessons about teamwork and sportsmanship. Coach Ali and Ms Naivalu also provided essential resources and opportunities for competition,

CRICKET Winning last year’s inter-school tournament at Po Kong Village Road was an unforgettable achievement. We faced strong opposition, but our teamwork, skill, and spirit led us to lift the trophy. One of the most memorable aspects of the season was bonding with players across year groups — building a team rich in talent and unity. While our international-level players brought valuable experience, every member contributed; cricket is a true team sport that thrives on communication and trust. My advice to future teams: work together, listen to your coaches, and take the time to connect with your teammates. One of my most memorable experiences as a golf captain was at my first tournament. Golf has become increasingly popular among younger players, and it was heartwarming to see my friends embracing a sport I love. I also met many young players who shared my passion, witnessing golf’s growth both locally and globally.
Cobra Rugby has managed a massive leap forward this year in both quality and consistency, most notably earning a nomination to play in the prestigious Bill Williams 7s 2024 tournament. Additionally, the team jumped from last place in the 2023/24 season to 4th in the 2024/25 regular season.

YEARBOOK 2024-25
2024-25 has not seen the Theatre department sitting still -but then, when have we ever sat still?! It has been a busy, creative, and collaborative year for us, with an emphasis on celebrating our student achievements with parents and families in the DC community. In the primary Drama studio, every single class has put on a showcase event for parents and staff to experience what they have been working on — in some cases this was a work-in-progress showing, led by the wonderful Ms Hubbard, and in others, students performed whole scripts they had created! Many of the primary students are culminating this academic year with the fabulous Alice@Wonderland production for all, far and wide, to enjoy. The fun doesn’t stop in Primary though — the secondary students have enjoyed workshops on stage combat, and some lucky students will get to attend the Year 7 ESF Drama conference in June, while the senior students will go to see some fabulous productions at the Hong Kong Arts Festival. We have hosted so many performances again this year, from Year 10s with their Monologues, Year 11s with The Play that Goes Wrong, and Year 12’s 24 hour play and the Collaborative Performance, while the graduating 13s have demonstrated their prowess on stage with the Solo Theatre pieces. We also had the pleasure of learning from the brilliant Noa Rotem during her visit to DC to lead workshops in Suzuki method and Japanese Butoh. And lastly, no one will forget the amazing A Night at The Cabaret! This secondary production was a phenomenal collaboration in the Performing Arts team, and our musical and theatrical students shone like the stars they are! We celebrate many successes this year and look forward to what the next year brings.

YEARBOOK 2024-25
“When do you know when your artwork is resolved”. This was a question I found myself asking repeatedly to our Year 13 art students during their final stretch leading up to the graduation exhibition. Our twenty-one Year 13 artists pushed themselves to the very end and curated a stunning exhibition, which was one of the highlights of the year. This year, our campus came alive with colourful paper flower sculptures, foil human figures, and gratitude portraits of school personnel from our community. Our Primary art students explored their imagination, expressive ideas, and artistic growth with enthusiasm and joy. In Secondary, students continued to explore a wide range of techniques and media. The foyer transformed into a dynamic gallery space, showcasing Year 7’s toucans and geckos, Year 10’s abstract landscapes, intriguing block prints from IDU week, and Year 11’s still-life paintings that thoughtfully reflect cultural elements. We also explored a growing spirit of artistic collaboration, led by our dedicated Visual Arts Captains. Through the collaborative mural project and after-school art workshops, our captains inspired and mentored younger students. As we bring the 2024–2025 school year to a close, it may still feel unresolved or unfinished. But perhaps, like any work of art, that is simply part of the process because resolution does not always mean completion. We hope this summer brings you time for reflection, celebration, and imaginative anticipation of another artistic year ahead.

The Music Department has enjoyed a phenomenal year, filled with a diverse range of events and opportunities for our young musicians. Our talented Secondary ensemble members shone at the ESF Music Festival which was an amazing experience for our orchestra, choir, and stage band members collaborating with other ESF Secondary school musicians. In Term 1 the Recital Evening highlighted the exceptional skills of our Classical, Jazz, and Traditional musicians, while in Term 2 the Ensemble Evening was a resounding success. This sell-out show featured captivating performances from the Chamber Orchestra, Secondary Choir, Cobra Choir, and Stage Band, culminating in a powerful combined ensemble piece. For the first time we ran a “No Boundaries Music Week” in which students worked to create an original composition and record it at a professional studio. Students across the college also benefited from a visit by world renowned music educator Doug Goodkin. A number of our young musicians also took centre stage in the Secondary production A Night At the Cabaret and the Primary production Alice@Wonderland. In Term 3 our Year 11 music class organised their MYP Music Exhibition called A Night of Jazz. There have also been numerous other performance opportunities at assemblies, Buskers’ Corners, end of unit lunchtime performances and much more, making 2024-25 a remarkable year for music at Discovery College!

Model United Nations A key co-curricular activity at Discovery College, Model United Nations, helps students to use their voices to express world issues while being introduced to public speaking. This year, our club had the privilege of attending three esteemed conferences, Island School Model United Nations, Renaissance College Model United Nations and Hong Kong Model United Nations, with 46 delegates in attendance. Since the 2023 revival of this extracurricular activity at Discovery College, it has become popular, given that students found that the activity was not as daunting to expand to the size that it is today.
Student Testimonials “Unsure of what to expect, I can remember reluctantly joining a Model United Nations conference for the first time. After 12 more conferences, my experiences within MUN have allowed me to meet many great people and learn more about my strengths and weaknesses. Hence, I encourage everybody to give MUN a try!” — Alexander Nolens-Liu, Year 11 “MUN has been a thoroughly rewarding experience and is an incredible opportunity to meet new people, and like-minded peers from various schools all across Hong Kong. Not only is MUN a valuable co-curricular in learning political awareness, but it teaches the important skills of public speaking, critical thinking, and collaboration in becoming a well-rounded delegate. As a more reserved person, joining MUN pushed me out of my comfort zone and prompted my new interest in world history through the unique debate that can be found in no other co-curricular.” — Jasmine Yeung, Year 12
