This past year has been one of expanded partnerships and celebration. In 2017, we celebrated thirty years of nurturing wonder, and providing open-ended experiences where children and families can test ideas and explore.

Since opening our doors in 1987, the unique exhibits and talented staff of Discovery Center have captivated 2.3 million curious visitors. We wanted to come up with a plan to expand our impact, properly mark this thirty-year anniversary, and thank the community for their ongoing support. This aspiration became the genesis of the Tennessee STEAM Festival.

Our initial plan was to have 10 STEAM-packed days with awesome science, technology, engineering, art, and math in our own back yard. “Our own backyard” quickly became a state wide festival in year one. At the end of 10 exhilarating days, over 10,000 attendees were inspired, engaged, and entertained at over 82 venues across Tennessee. Education Networks of America, FedEx, Schwan Cosmetics, and the Nashville Section of The American Chemical Society came on board as new partners and sponsored the Festival!

Big League Fun was a home run. During opening day on May 20th, special interactive stations were set up around Discovery Center. The 2,000 square-foot hands-on summer exhibit experience featured simulated ball games, and trivia challenges that promoted important educational concepts for children and engaged fans of all ages. From Spring Training to the World Series, members and guests explored the ins and outs of baseball season.

Exhibit activities emphasized the science and math behind the sport, reflected national academic standards for schoolage children, and supported developmental milestones set

by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Dr. Richard Valerdi, Associate Professor at Arizona State University and TedX Talk speaker, delivered a dynamic Science Café for families on the math and science behind baseball.

August 21st, 2017 was eclipse time at Discovery Center.

We had families from New York, Alabama, Missouri, Louisiana, and beyond! Guests posted on facebook about their experience: “We had an amazing time - your team should be completely proud of the event!!!!” The cover of this report aptly depicts the wonder and joy shared by families on this historic summer day.

What we do here at Discovery Center matters over the next 30 years.

Discovery Center provides an opportunity for all children to have access to high quality informal learning experiences – this is critical in developing a robust learning ecosystem that includes out-of-school and after-school partnership programs. A child between the ages of 5 and 8 years of age spends 85% of their time outside the classroom. It is imperative that we facilitate experiences that can’t be found at home or school, experiences that will inspire inquiry.

Over the next 30 years and beyond, we will continue to be impact driven. We will provide those transformational moments that inspire children to become collaborative, compassionate, and innovative leaders.

We are striving to make Discovery Center one of the nation’s best, most resourceful and relevant children’s museums. We want to serve our growing community.

Expanding Opportunities

Expanding Perspectives

As Discovery Center at Murfree Spring continues to expand its exhibits, programs, and outreach, we have been working on plans for an additional campus in Williamson County.

This will help us better serve the families of Williamson County and the surrounding western and southern counties. It will also provide numerous opportunities for innovation and collaboration between the two sites.

Being an inclusive organization means trying to do our best to understand and reflect the needs of the many audiences we serve. Discovery Center is excited to be part of two initiatives that will help broaden our perspectives on inclusion and the needs of our visitors.

It’s no secret Franklin and Williamson County are imbued with rich history, world-class schools, a top-notch library system, amazing shops and restaurants, popular festivals, beautiful parks, new corporate headquarters, fantastic golf courses, and a robust real estate market. What’s missing? A children’s museum – a place where families can go and have fun and learn together.

Discovery Center’s focus on science, technology, engineering, art and math (or STEAM) is a huge benefit to our region because we offer “informal education,” which plays an important supporting role in our education system.

Think about the school groups from Williamson and surrounding counties that will visit for a field trip, or the after-school programs that will be offered, or community gatherings that will be held. The tools and resources of a museum like this go a long way towards improving knowledge and broadening our horizons.

The museum aims to develop an ecosystem of community partners that include: Williamson County Schools, Franklin Special School District, Columbia State, Franklin Parks, Boys & Girls Club, and various corporations. We appreciate the support we’ve received from Williamson Inc. as we’ve developed plans that complement the aesthetic of the surrounding area. We’re excited to bring this project to fruition, providing yet another reason to fall in love with middle Tennessee!

Building Evaluation Capacity is an opportunity to increase our understanding of evaluation and learn to think like an evaluator. Our first session with consultant Jessica Sickler included learning about evaluative thinking, logic models, evaluation questions, and being a reflective practitioner.

Discovery Center will work with Jessica through two more workshops over the next 16 months. In addition to the intensive professional development work, public work sessions intended to build regional awareness about evaluation will feature two renowned professionals: Swarupa Anila with the Detroit Institute of Arts and Jessica Luke with the University of Washington.

Discovery Center is also pleased to be joining 4 other museums from around the nation in the Cultural Competence Learning Institute (CCLI) Institute. The CCLI is both a process and set of resources designed to help museums increase their organizational capacity around diversity and culture. In addition to developing strategies, timelines, and processes for achieving strategic initiatives, we will benefit from the lessons and perspectives of other national colleagues through monthly calls, and will receive facilitated instruction to increase institutional capacity.

These projects are funded by grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Financial Snapshot 2016 Discovery Center’s financial performance for 2016 was strong. The museum experienced a 27% increase in revenue driven by our first year to receive funding as part of the Tennessee Science Alliance and by a 22% increase in earned income. One of our strengths is our diversity in revenue sources, including earned income, contributions and public support. Earned income from admissions, memberships, birthday parties, camps and other programs represented 53% of our revenue. Generous annual contributed support from corporations, foundations and individuals made up 35% of our revenue and public support from federal, city and state governments made up 12% of revenue.

Through a partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, Discovery Center brought free, hands-on science of sports activities to over 210 kids in the summer of 2017.

Favorable revenue growth has allowed us to continue to concentrate on providing quality experiences for families in Middle Tennessee and beyond. Overall, for every dollar expended to carry out our mission, 74% went towards programs, 16% to Administration and 10% to Fundraising.

We would not be able to achieve our goals if it were not for the hard work of our staff, generous support of donors and leadership from our board. Discovery Center is looking forward to growing our revenue in all areas in the years to come.

Board Member of the Year - 2017 Tim Fallon

Celebrating 30 Years!

Secret Garden Party a night of honor

Originally from Arkansas, Tim Fallon jumped at the chance to transfer from Northern California back to the south when he was offered a job at the Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant. Tim and his wife, Sasha, have found a great community to put down roots for them and their three beautiful children, Jack (9), Gabriel (7) and Nicole (5).

Tim was asked to join the board in 2017, and “it did not take much convincing to join the board of such a great organization,” says Tim.

“I love seeing the smiles on the faces of people of all ages every time I visit the Discovery Center. I want to be a part of continuing and growing that impact.”

Tim has been an integral part of the board serving on the Executive Committee, attending events, and being an advocate for purposeful play. It was Tim’s insistence and perseverance that led to the donation of a new Nissan Pathfinder for Discovery Center’s mobile education programs.

“I hope that Discovery Center will continue to grow and have an impact in Rutherford County and beyond. My life, and the lives of my family, have benefitted greatly, and I hope more and more people get to experience what we have,” says Tim. When asked what surprise him most about serving on the board, he paid respect to the museum staff that is dedicated to providing the best possible experience to all visitors and community members touched by the programs. “There are numerous staff members that you never see at the front desk, but that put in countless hours and tireless efforts moving forward the mission of the Discovery Center.”

The State of Tennessee honored the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring for engaging curious minds to fuel the future for three decades. The recognition was presented during the Discovery Center’s annual Secret Garden Party on June 2, 2017.

The proclamation from Dawn White, District 37 State Representative, offered congratulations to the Discovery Center where for 30 years it “has been a place where individuals young and old can explore, learn, and grow” and thanks for “the impact on students and families throughout the state.”

The 2017 Secret Garden Party was also an opportunity to honor Billie and Joe Little for their vision and dedication to Discovery Center for over 30 years.

Joe, a practicing pediatrician, and Billie, an educator, led an eager group of young parents to discuss a hands-on art and science museum in Murfreesboro. After an extensive grass roots campaign, a building was purchased at 503 N. Maple Street and renovated. Hundreds of volunteers painted, cleaned, and prepared Discovery House for opening just one year later, on March 3, 1987. The 4,500 square foot facility hosted 11,000 in its first year with Billie Little serving as its first Executive Director. Billie Little’s energy and insight kept the project moving forward, and she spent the next 25 years dedicated to the museum.

“For Billie Little to be involved with her heart and soul since 1986 is an inspiration,” says current Discovery Center President & CEO, Tara MacDougall.

Beyond the Bell It’s no secret that out-of-school time (OST) – the time before and after school, weekends and evenings, and school breaks – contains the largest blocks of discretionary time in a child’s typical week. Discovery Center is committed to providing consistent, high-quality OST learning

The Nissan Foundation/Nissan North America Diversity drives engagement – whether you are talking about a global corporation or your local children’s museum.

We’re grateful to have partners like Nissan North America and the Nissan Foundation to help provide cultural and science programs to all children and families throughout middle Tennessee.

Since 2004, Nissan has contributed over $658,000 to Discovery Center. This includes annual grants to support our free cultural community days such as Discover India and Hispanic Heritage Day, and sponsorship of exciting exhibits like Wheels and the Nissan Super Service Center.

In addition to their generous financial contributions, Nissan

has also donated a vehicle to take our education outreach programs throughout middle Tennessee, volunteered by repairing exhibits, and provided representatives to serve on our board of directors and executive committee.

Through its donation of equipment, time, and funding, Nissan North America and the Nissan Foundation have been integral in supporting our mission to engage curious minds to fuel the future. Thanks to Nissan, over 1,400,000 children & families have experienced authentic cultural and science activities firsthand.

Sibshops engage siblings of children with special needs in fun-filled activities, games, and talk about the good and not-so-good parts of having a sibling with special needs.

Explorer’s Club provided over 300 hands-on STEM experiences to students at the Murfreesboro Boys & Girls Club.

opportunities for youth in middle Tennessee. We have a strong history of providing OST opportunities in various forms, which include Camp Discovery, GSK Science in the Summer™, SciGirls Code, Explorer’s Club, and SibShops.

Activities designed to amplify inspiration and curiousity along with schedules developed to better accommodate parents resulted in Camp Discovery participation growth of 26% and serving over 700 children in 2017.

Featuring exciting, hands-on science science of sports activities, GSK Science in the Summer™ served over 210 students in 4 counties.

Partnering with Twin Cities Public Television, Discovery Center piloted the SciGirls Code curriculum and materials with 10+ girls twice a week for 9 months at Eagleville School led by Eagleville’s Instructional Technology Coach Christina Tibbs.

Discovery Center Values

In 2017, Discovery Center invited our staff, board, advisory board, and youth council to help craft the words that capture what we believe in and how we should serve our community. We are excited and proud that the process of uncovering, verbalizing, and celebrating our core values unfolded, leading to the following:

CREATVITY

In STEP 2, STEM majors learn to develop their own activelearning lessons and repeat the STEP 1 process in a middle school classroom. Each year, about half of the 100 STEP 1 students choose to become science and math teachers.

Others become strong advocates for K12 education in their STEM careers.

“Having students facilitate learning at Discovery Center not only shaped the preservice teachers’ experience and practice in new ways, but influenced their understanding of how children learn that will impact their careers for years to come.”

CURIOSITY

In STEP 1, STEM majors learn to deliver an active learning math or science lesson for an elementary classroom. After practicing on peers and revising, they present the lesson in an elementary classroom under guidance from a master teacher.

Discovery Center and MTeach began a unique partnership that placed summer MTeach students in Discovery Center’s exhibit spaces and camp programs with museum visitors serving as the context for MTeach student lessons. It was a great success, highlighting the strengths and opportunities in informal teaching experiences and building students’ communication skills about STEM content.

Nissan’s corporate responsibility stretches far beyond Discovery Center. “Enriching people’s lives” – this is the global vision of Nissan and all of its operating companies across the world. Nissan supports its vision by improving the quality of life in the communities where it operates.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

MTeach, MTSU’s secondary math and science teacher certification program, provides opportunities for undergraduate STEM majors to “try out teaching” as an add-on to their existing STEM major. STEM majors may enroll in two 1-credit MTeach courses (STEP 1 and STEP 2) free of charge to explore their interest in becoming a STEM teacher.

Be Sharp!

Dirk Heusinkveld has been volunteering at the Discovery Center since January 2017. His sister, Meredith, used to work at the museum, and he always enjoyed visiting her when she worked. When CEO Tara MacDougall, a friend of the family, asked if Dirk would be interested in volunteering, it was an easy yes!

Hi! My name is Isabella Reish. I am a second year youth council member. I like serving on the Youth Council because it feels amazing to give back to the community in any way or to take positions of leadership. The entire experience of learning how to work as a team and be a good volunteer has been wonderful.

Dirk works mainly with the animals. He’s known for making the animals delicious dinnertime salads and isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves to do the not-so-fun jobs. He loves all the animals so much that he cannot name a favorite. “The best part of volunteering at Discovery Center is being helpful to others, “ Dirk says.

Dirk’s other interests are toy collecting and flying, so naturally his favorite exhibit is the airplanes. He is taking flying lessons with his dad, likes to collect vintage Transformers, and enjoys traveling to BotCon conventions around the United States.

The events that the Discovery Center holds, like the New Year’s countdown to noon, have been so fun to work. I am really grateful for the experience.

My hobbies include playing the violin and the ukulele, playing with my dogs, and reading mystery novels. In the future, I would love to go into music, film or social science. My dream job is to be a violinist in the New York Philharmonic.

Both of my parents are very supportive and inspiring to me. They are both very smart individuals who have helped shape me into who I am.

As a child, Dale McCreedy loved playing in the woods, collecting bugs, and was fascinated by dissections. She had a transformative experience in a high school biology class where she was charged to read a scientific research paper and then present to the class. Sharing the knowledge and excitement of a discovery in genetics with the class was very empowering. She has been educating about the process of science ever since.

Dale earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Lafayette College, and her first job was in a lab working with the influenza virus at The Wistar Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. She continued to earn her Master’s degree in education, and then joined The Franklin Institute Science Museum, where her work encouraging girls and women in science led to her earning her Ph.D. A native of Pennsylvania, Dale moved to Tennessee in 2016 after her husband transferred to Nashville. Being involved in the museum field for over 20 years, she knew she wanted to work for a museum in the region. She cares

deeply about family and community engagement which are key to children’s museums. One meeting with CEO Tara MacDougall, and Dale knew Discovery Center would be a natural fit.

As Vice President of Audience & Community Engagement, Dale has big ideas for the future of Discovery Center.

“It’s exciting to work with other organizations to create partnerships that expand our impact and connect with families who normally don’t visit.”

Be Sharp!

Dirk Heusinkveld has been volunteering at the Discovery Center since January 2017. His sister, Meredith, used to work at the museum, and he always enjoyed visiting her when she worked. When CEO Tara MacDougall, a friend of the family, asked if Dirk would be interested in volunteering, it was an easy yes!

Hi! My name is Isabella Reish. I am a second year youth council member. I like serving on the Youth Council because it feels amazing to give back to the community in any way or to take positions of leadership. The entire experience of learning how to work as a team and be a good volunteer has been wonderful.

Dirk works mainly with the animals. He’s known for making the animals delicious dinnertime salads and isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves to do the not-so-fun jobs. He loves all the animals so much that he cannot name a favorite. “The best part of volunteering at Discovery Center is being helpful to others, “ Dirk says.

Dirk’s other interests are toy collecting and flying, so naturally his favorite exhibit is the airplanes. He is taking flying lessons with his dad, likes to collect vintage Transformers, and enjoys traveling to BotCon conventions around the United States.

The events that the Discovery Center holds, like the New Year’s countdown to noon, have been so fun to work. I am really grateful for the experience.

My hobbies include playing the violin and the ukulele, playing with my dogs, and reading mystery novels. In the future, I would love to go into music, film or social science. My dream job is to be a violinist in the New York Philharmonic.

Both of my parents are very supportive and inspiring to me. They are both very smart individuals who have helped shape me into who I am.

As a child, Dale McCreedy loved playing in the woods, collecting bugs, and was fascinated by dissections. She had a transformative experience in a high school biology class where she was charged to read a scientific research paper and then present to the class. Sharing the knowledge and excitement of a discovery in genetics with the class was very empowering. She has been educating about the process of science ever since.

Dale earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Lafayette College, and her first job was in a lab working with the influenza virus at The Wistar Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2017, Discovery Center invited our staff, board, advisory board, and youth council to help craft the words that capture what we believe in and how we should serve our community. We are excited and proud that the process of uncovering, verbalizing, and celebrating our core values unfolded, leading to the following:

CREATVITY

In STEP 2, STEM majors learn to develop their own activelearning lessons and repeat the STEP 1 process in a middle school classroom. Each year, about half of the 100 STEP 1 students choose to become science and math teachers.

Others become strong advocates for K12 education in their STEM careers.

“Having students facilitate learning at Discovery Center not only shaped the preservice teachers’ experience and practice in new ways, but influenced their understanding of how children learn that will impact their careers for years to come.”

CURIOSITY

In STEP 1, STEM majors learn to deliver an active learning math or science lesson for an elementary classroom. After practicing on peers and revising, they present the lesson in an elementary classroom under guidance from a master teacher.

Discovery Center and MTeach began a unique partnership that placed summer MTeach students in Discovery Center’s exhibit spaces and camp programs with museum visitors serving as the context for MTeach student lessons. It was a great success, highlighting the strengths and opportunities in informal teaching experiences and building students’ communication skills about STEM content.

Nissan’s corporate responsibility stretches far beyond Discovery Center. “Enriching people’s lives” – this is the global vision of Nissan and all of its operating companies across the world. Nissan supports its vision by improving the quality of life in the communities where it operates.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

MTeach, MTSU’s secondary math and science teacher certification program, provides opportunities for undergraduate STEM majors to “try out teaching” as an add-on to their existing STEM major. STEM majors may enroll in two 1-credit MTeach courses (STEP 1 and STEP 2) free of charge to explore their interest in becoming a STEM teacher.

We’re grateful to have partners like Nissan North America and the Nissan Foundation to help provide cultural and science programs to all children and families throughout middle Tennessee.

Since 2004, Nissan has contributed over $658,000 to Discovery Center. This includes annual grants to support our free cultural community days such as Discover India and Hispanic Heritage Day, and sponsorship of exciting exhibits like Wheels and the Nissan Super Service Center.

In addition to their generous financial contributions, Nissan

has also donated a vehicle to take our education outreach programs throughout middle Tennessee, volunteered by repairing exhibits, and provided representatives to serve on our board of directors and executive committee.

Through its donation of equipment, time, and funding, Nissan North America and the Nissan Foundation have been integral in supporting our mission to engage curious minds to fuel the future. Thanks to Nissan, over 1,400,000 children & families have experienced authentic cultural and science activities firsthand.

Explorer’s Club provided over 300 hands-on STEM experiences to students at the Murfreesboro Boys & Girls Club.

opportunities for youth in middle Tennessee. We have a strong history of providing OST opportunities in various forms, which include Camp Discovery, GSK Science in the Summer™, SciGirls Code, Explorer’s Club, and SibShops.

Activities designed to amplify inspiration and curiousity along with schedules developed to better accommodate parents resulted in Camp Discovery participation growth of 26% and serving over 700 children in 2017.

Featuring exciting, hands-on science science of sports activities, GSK Science in the Summer™ served over 210 students in 4 counties.

Partnering with Twin Cities Public Television, Discovery Center piloted the SciGirls Code curriculum and materials with 10+ girls twice a week for 9 months at Eagleville School led by Eagleville’s Instructional Technology Coach Christina Tibbs.

Celebrating 30 Years!

Secret Garden Party a night of honor

Originally from Arkansas, Tim Fallon jumped at the chance to transfer from Northern California back to the south when he was offered a job at the Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant. Tim and his wife, Sasha, have found a great community to put down roots for them and their three beautiful children, Jack (9), Gabriel (7) and Nicole (5).

Tim was asked to join the board in 2017, and “it did not take much convincing to join the board of such a great organization,” says Tim.

“I love seeing the smiles on the faces of people of all ages every time I visit the Discovery Center. I want to be a part of continuing and growing that impact.”

Tim has been an integral part of the board serving on the Executive Committee, attending events, and being an advocate for purposeful play. It was Tim’s insistence and perseverance that led to the donation of a new Nissan Pathfinder for Discovery Center’s mobile education programs.

“I hope that Discovery Center will continue to grow and have an impact in Rutherford County and beyond. My life, and the lives of my family, have benefitted greatly, and I hope more and more people get to experience what we have,” says Tim. When asked what surprise him most about serving on the board, he paid respect to the museum staff that is dedicated to providing the best possible experience to all visitors and community members touched by the programs. “There are numerous staff members that you never see at the front desk, but that put in countless hours and tireless efforts moving forward the mission of the Discovery Center.”

The State of Tennessee honored the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring for engaging curious minds to fuel the future for three decades. The recognition was presented during the Discovery Center’s annual Secret Garden Party on June 2, 2017.

The proclamation from Dawn White, District 37 State Representative, offered congratulations to the Discovery Center where for 30 years it “has been a place where individuals young and old can explore, learn, and grow” and thanks for “the impact on students and families throughout the state.”

The 2017 Secret Garden Party was also an opportunity to honor Billie and Joe Little for their vision and dedication to Discovery Center for over 30 years.

Joe, a practicing pediatrician, and Billie, an educator, led an eager group of young parents to discuss a hands-on art and science museum in Murfreesboro. After an extensive grass roots campaign, a building was purchased at 503 N. Maple Street and renovated. Hundreds of volunteers painted, cleaned, and prepared Discovery House for opening just one year later, on March 3, 1987. The 4,500 square foot facility hosted 11,000 in its first year with Billie Little serving as its first Executive Director. Billie Little’s energy and insight kept the project moving forward, and she spent the next 25 years dedicated to the museum.

“For Billie Little to be involved with her heart and soul since 1986 is an inspiration,” says current Discovery Center President & CEO, Tara MacDougall.

Financial Snapshot 2016 Discovery Center’s financial performance for 2016 was strong. The museum experienced a 27% increase in revenue driven by our first year to receive funding as part of the Tennessee Science Alliance and by a 22% increase in earned income. One of our strengths is our diversity in revenue sources, including earned income, contributions and public support. Earned income from admissions, memberships, birthday parties, camps and other programs represented 53% of our revenue. Generous annual contributed support from corporations, foundations and individuals made up 35% of our revenue and public support from federal, city and state governments made up 12% of revenue.

Through a partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, Discovery Center brought free, hands-on science of sports activities to over 210 kids in the summer of 2017.

Favorable revenue growth has allowed us to continue to concentrate on providing quality experiences for families in Middle Tennessee and beyond. Overall, for every dollar expended to carry out our mission, 74% went towards programs, 16% to Administration and 10% to Fundraising.

We would not be able to achieve our goals if it were not for the hard work of our staff, generous support of donors and leadership from our board. Discovery Center is looking forward to growing our revenue in all areas in the years to come.

This past year has been one of expanded partnerships and celebration. In 2017, we celebrated thirty years of nurturing wonder, and providing open-ended experiences where children and families can test ideas and explore.

Since opening our doors in 1987, the unique exhibits and talented staff of Discovery Center have captivated 2.3 million curious visitors. We wanted to come up with a plan to expand our impact, properly mark this thirty-year anniversary, and thank the community for their ongoing support. This aspiration became the genesis of the Tennessee STEAM Festival.

Our initial plan was to have 10 STEAM-packed days with awesome science, technology, engineering, art, and math in our own back yard. “Our own backyard” quickly became a state wide festival in year one. At the end of 10 exhilarating days, over 10,000 attendees were inspired, engaged, and entertained at over 82 venues across Tennessee. Education Networks of America, FedEx, Schwan Cosmetics, and the Nashville Section of The American Chemical Society came on board as new partners and sponsored the Festival!

Big League Fun was a home run. During opening day on May 20th, special interactive stations were set up around Discovery Center. The 2,000 square-foot hands-on summer exhibit experience featured simulated ball games, and trivia challenges that promoted important educational concepts for children and engaged fans of all ages. From Spring Training to the World Series, members and guests explored the ins and outs of baseball season.

Exhibit activities emphasized the science and math behind the sport, reflected national academic standards for schoolage children, and supported developmental milestones set

by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Dr. Richard Valerdi, Associate Professor at Arizona State University and TedX Talk speaker, delivered a dynamic Science Café for families on the math and science behind baseball.

August 21st, 2017 was eclipse time at Discovery Center.

We had families from New York, Alabama, Missouri, Louisiana, and beyond! Guests posted on facebook about their experience: “We had an amazing time - your team should be completely proud of the event!!!!” The cover of this report aptly depicts the wonder and joy shared by families on this historic summer day.

What we do here at Discovery Center matters over the next 30 years.

Discovery Center provides an opportunity for all children to have access to high quality informal learning experiences – this is critical in developing a robust learning ecosystem that includes out-of-school and after-school partnership programs. A child between the ages of 5 and 8 years of age spends 85% of their time outside the classroom. It is imperative that we facilitate experiences that can’t be found at home or school, experiences that will inspire inquiry.

Over the next 30 years and beyond, we will continue to be impact driven. We will provide those transformational moments that inspire children to become collaborative, compassionate, and innovative leaders.

We are striving to make Discovery Center one of the nation’s best, most resourceful and relevant children’s museums. We want to serve our growing community.

Expanding Opportunities

Expanding Perspectives

As Discovery Center at Murfree Spring continues to expand its exhibits, programs, and outreach, we have been working on plans for an additional campus in Williamson County.

This will help us better serve the families of Williamson County and the surrounding western and southern counties. It will also provide numerous opportunities for innovation and collaboration between the two sites.

Being an inclusive organization means trying to do our best to understand and reflect the needs of the many audiences we serve. Discovery Center is excited to be part of two initiatives that will help broaden our perspectives on inclusion and the needs of our visitors.

It’s no secret Franklin and Williamson County are imbued with rich history, world-class schools, a top-notch library system, amazing shops and restaurants, popular festivals, beautiful parks, new corporate headquarters, fantastic golf courses, and a robust real estate market. What’s missing? A children’s museum – a place where families can go and have fun and learn together.

Discovery Center’s focus on science, technology, engineering, art and math (or STEAM) is a huge benefit to our region because we offer “informal education,” which plays an important supporting role in our education system.

Think about the school groups from Williamson and surrounding counties that will visit for a field trip, or the after-school programs that will be offered, or community gatherings that will be held. The tools and resources of a museum like this go a long way towards improving knowledge and broadening our horizons.

The museum aims to develop an ecosystem of community partners that include: Williamson County Schools, Franklin Special School District, Columbia State, Franklin Parks, Boys & Girls Club, and various corporations. We appreciate the support we’ve received from Williamson Inc. as we’ve developed plans that complement the aesthetic of the surrounding area. We’re excited to bring this project to fruition, providing yet another reason to fall in love with middle Tennessee!

Building Evaluation Capacity is an opportunity to increase our understanding of evaluation and learn to think like an evaluator. Our first session with consultant Jessica Sickler included learning about evaluative thinking, logic models, evaluation questions, and being a reflective practitioner.

Discovery Center will work with Jessica through two more workshops over the next 16 months. In addition to the intensive professional development work, public work sessions intended to build regional awareness about evaluation will feature two renowned professionals: Swarupa Anila with the Detroit Institute of Arts and Jessica Luke with the University of Washington.

Discovery Center is also pleased to be joining 4 other museums from around the nation in the Cultural Competence Learning Institute (CCLI) Institute. The CCLI is both a process and set of resources designed to help museums increase their organizational capacity around diversity and culture. In addition to developing strategies, timelines, and processes for achieving strategic initiatives, we will benefit from the lessons and perspectives of other national colleagues through monthly calls, and will receive facilitated instruction to increase institutional capacity.

These projects are funded by grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
