CALICO GHOST TOWN
STORY BY EDDIE HERNANDEZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTA MORTIMORE
Calico Ghost Town is an old West mining adventure in Yermo, CA just minutes north of Barstow Calico has been around since 1881 when the town was bustling with prospectors searching for its mineral riches In 1881, Calico had a population of 40 peaking to 1,200 in 1887 During the 1880's silver was king and the Calico Mining district became one of the richest in the state. Through extensive mining efforts in over 500 mines, including the legendary Silver King, Calico produced $86 million in silver and $45 million in borax. In the mid 1890's Calico was abandoned after silver lost its value dropping from $1.31 an ounce to 63 cents an ounce. The town that once gave miners a good living lost its hustle and became a “ghost town."

Open daily: 9am - 5pm
Closed: Christmas Day
Today, Calico is one of the few remaining original mining towns in the western United States. Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950’s architecturally restoring all but the five original buildings to look as they did in the 1880’s Calico received State Historical Landmark 782 and in 2005 was proclaimed by then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California’s Silver Rush Ghost Town
Today, Calico is part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system, which is visited by people from across the country and from all over the world
