#SASKATOONING GUIDE | 2026
Land Acknowledgement We acknowledge that we are on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis people. We reaffirm our relations, which we are bound to by our ancestors through Treaty, to steward and seek mutual benefit on this land for as long as the grass grows, the sun shines, and the river flows. We pay our respects to the First Nation and Métis ancestors of this place, and honour Elders and Survivors as we bring awareness to Indian Residential and Day Schools, the Sixties Scoop, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and TwoSpirited. To acknowledge this territory and its keepers on their traditional terms is to act in reciprocity so that truth may be understood and reconciliation made possible.
Thanks for your interest in our beautiful city. As you’ll see in this guide, #Saskatooning isn’t one thing—it’s everything. We take great pride in creating experiences that delight visitors and locals alike. Let us know how we did and help us keep Saskatoon a world-class destination by filling out our 5-minute visitor survey. From overall impressions to attractions, accommodations, and services, your opinion matters.

Sports fans will feel right at home too. From the roar of the crowd at a Saskatchewan Rush game to the crack of the bat at a Saskatoon Berries Baseball match, the energy of competition is alive and electric. As we celebrate the present, we also honor the past. For millennia, Indigenous Peoples have called this land home. We are deeply grateful, and we remain committed to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, the MMIW2S Calls for Justice, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). I’m so glad you’re here in our beautiful city, proudly located on Treaty 6 Territory and the homeland of the Metis. Saskatoon is a place where history, culture, and innovation come together, and we’re honoured to share and strengthen our Treaty relationships with everyone who visits. Saskatoon is one of Canada’s fastestgrowing cities, and you’ll quickly see why. We’re a hub for research, industry, and opportunity—but what really makes us special are the people. Friendly, welcoming, and full of prairie pride, Saskatoon is the kind of place that feels like home, even if it’s your first visit. While you’re here, I encourage you to get out and explore. Walk or bike the stunning Meewasin Trail, take in the views at River Landing, and check out our local shops and vibrant neighbourhoods. Be sure to catch some live music or theatre, and don’t leave without trying a taste of our incredible prairie food scene. Enjoy your time in Saskatoon—we hope it’s the first of many visits!
5
We are all treaty people Tansi, On behalf of the seven member nations that make up the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC), I am honoured to welcome you to Treaty 6 Territory. We’re glad you’re here. Whether this is your first visit or your home away from home, I hope you take time to experience the warmth, beauty, and spirit of this place and its people, and that you’re inspired to keep coming back. From the winding South Saskatchewan River to the open prairie skies, Saskatoon is full of opportunities to learn, explore, and connect. As you enjoy the city’s many sights, events, and festivals, I invite you to reflect on the deep history and resilience of the First Nations peoples who have cared for these lands since time immemorial, and who continue to thrive here today.
Mark Arcand SASKATOON TRIBAL COUNCIL CHIEF
6
As we look ahead, STC remains dedicated to building understanding, friendship, and shared prosperity for all who call Treaty 6 Territory home. We invite you to walk with us on this journey of truth and reconciliation.
Lyndon J. Linklater, a traditional knowledge keeper and storyteller in Treaty 6 territory, was able to meet and share stories with us and convey the importance of good relations. After the offering of tobacco, which is a traditional shared way to communicate respect and care to Indigenous elders/ knowledge keepers, we began with the history of Saskatoon.
“Storytelling is a way to connect and build relationships.” Saskatoon, a name derived from the Cree word for the saskatoon berry, misâskwatômin, was established in 1883 by a temperance group from Ontario who were looking to establish a dry community. When visiting the Whitecap Dakota First Nations (historically known as Moose Woods First Nation), Linklater remembers this story of John Lake, the leader of that temperance group. In the late 19th century, John Lake consulted with the Dakota people in the area, choosing his settlement on the Advice of Chief WápahaSká (Chief White Cap). This settlement is now the Saskatoon neighbourhood of Nutana, on the east side of the South Saskatchewan River. Saskatoon is now a flourishing city with a young and vibrant population – for Linklater, the story reflects the positive outcomes of developing good relationships and interconnected communities. For him, this story reflected the importance of developing good relations. When we acknowledge and understand our shared histories, both positive and harmful, we can build new interconnected relationships that enrich the present and serve the future.
When you visit Saskatoon, engaging in Indigenous culture builds a strong community linked by stories. Whether you immerse yourself in the culture at the world’s longest ongoing archaeological dig site, stay at a nationally recognized Indigenous owned resort, or spend the day on the battlegrounds of the Métis Resistance, discovering Saskatoon means immersing yourself in these vibrant cultures. With no shortage of experiences, you and your family can be immersed in the rich landscape, heritage, and future of Treaty 6.
“We have to understand and learn about the past so that we can understand the present to plan for the future”
7
Indigenous experiences We all have a role to play in truth and reconciliation. The history of this land and the peoples who steward it is a key part of what makes Saskatoon a city of diversity, discovery, and culture.
WANUSKEWIN
Through the many Indigenous experiences available to locals and visitors alike, we hope you come away with kinship, connection, and a deepened understanding and appreciation of Indigenous peoples and possibilities.
8
Remai Modern Remai Modern joins contemporary and traditional Indigenous art practices, telling Indigenous stories through art and community outreach. Check out the museum’s website for a list of exhibitions, films, tours, and other programming.
Wanuskewin Heritage Park Home to Canada’s longest running archaeological dig, Wanuskewin is a UNESCO-shortlisted site and sacred gathering place with more than 6,400 years of Plains Cree history. Wander through the facility’s art galleries, take in a live dance performance, shop Indigenous-made goods, and savour Indigenous flavours. If you can’t make it out to the park, explore their offsite gift shop nestled in the heart of the Broadway District.
Pow Wows
POW WOW
Pow wows are held throughout the year and are a vibrant celebration of Indigenous culture. If you’re attending a pow wow (many are open to the public), be a mindful participant: respect the opening prayer ceremony and the unique cultural traditions of each nation, dress modestly, ask before taking photos, respect the dancer regalia, support Indigenous vendors and artisans, and do not bring drugs or alcohol. If you’d like to ask questions of dancers or elders, offering tobacco as a gift is a sign of respect.
Dakota Dunes Resort
DAKOTA DUNES RESORT
Located on traditional Whitecap Dakota Unceded Territory, this beautiful, modern resort offers stunning views of the rolling prairies. Just 20 minutes from downtown Saskatoon, it’s the perfect place to relax, rejuvenate, and reconnect. Pemiska to Indigenous Experiences Pêmiska Tourism provides Indigenous-led experiences that shares the vibrant history and culture of our people. We have always and will always welcome newcomers and old friends.
BATOCHE
Batoche National Historic Site An hour north of Saskatoon is where you’ll find Batoche, a cultural site honouring the beauty and resilience of Métis people and culture. Home to the last battle of the Northwest Resistance of 1885, travel back in time on one of the site’s handson experiences highlighting Métis life in the late 19th century. The site is also a tribute to the legacy of Louis Riel and other members of the resistance.

Did you know? Saskatoon is a city of discovery. Here’s a taste of our history, heritage, and culture:
10
•
The City of Saskatoon was established in 1883 on Treaty Six Territory stewarded by the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, Salteaux, and Nakota Sioux. It is also home to many Métis settlements.
•
The name Saskatoon comes from the Cree word Misâskwatôminihk which means “at the place of many Saskatoon berries” (a berry we highly recommend taste testing).
•
With one of the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada, we are a foodie’s dream. Our culinary scene has received national and international recognition.
•
Saskatoon is home to the largest collection of Picasso linocuts. Find them at Remai Modern, a worldclass museum for modern and contemporary art.
•
Saskatchewan is the only province in Canada that doesn’t observe Daylight Savings Time. Saskatoon’s local time zone is Central Standard Time (CST).
•
Speaking of daylight: Saskatoon is one of the country’s sunniest spots, with more than 2,300 hours of beautiful, bright sunshine throughout the year.
•
Saskatoon has four sister cities: Cologne (Germany), Tampere (Finland), Shijiazhuang (China), and Umeå (Sweden). We keep good company!
Let’s go #Saskatooning
Saskatoon is a four-season city, with temperatures dipping as low as -40C in the winter and rising as high as +35C in the summer. No matter the weather, there’s always fun to be found and new ways to go #Saskatooning.
Beach essentials to soak up the sun along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. Comfortable shoes for shopping Saskatoon’s Broadway, Riversdale, and Downtown districts. A light raincoat and umbrella in case you get caught in a signature Saskatchewan thunderstorm. (Taking shelter inside one of our many critically acclaimed restaurants is a good idea, too).

Family-friendly fun Saskatoon is a family-friendly city. Traveling with your little loved ones? There’s plenty for people of all ages to discover here. If you’re looking for ideas to design the perfect family-friendly visit, we’ve got you covered.
Spend time outside
WONDERHUB
Fresh prairie air is the best way to start the day. Gear up at Escape Sports, Life Outside Gear Exchange, or The Local Adventure Co. before you hit the trails, the water, or the slopes. Or, take in a family nature walk along the Meewasin Trail or through the Opimihāw Valley at Wanuskewin Heritage Park. If there are animal lovers in your family, a trip to Wander’s Tiny Farm (a quick drive east of the city) delivers with cows, goats, sheep, pigs, and more.
Grab a midday treat There’s no shortage of kid-approved food and drink options in Saskatoon. Travel back in time at Boomtown Café (located inside the equally kid-friendly Western Development Museum), satisfy your sweet tooth with a slice of cake from Calories, or venture just outside the city for an iconic brunch at The Berry Barn.
Laugh and learn Playful learning is the Saskatoon way! Take in Canada’s coolest science project at the Synchotron, weave your way through the colourful Cosmic Commotion at Nutrien Wonderhub, or pick up a craft kit (along with other creative products made by local Saskatchewan kids) at The Art Room ink.
Relax and recharge Take in an after-dinner movie at the historic Broadway Theatre. Save room for popcorn! If you’ve booked a stay at one of Saskatoon’s many family-friendly hotels, you can hit the slides before you hit the sheets.
Enjoy a delicious dinner Even the pickiest of eaters will find a favourite dish in Saskatoon. Book a table at Taverna Italian Restaurant for an exceptional pasta or pizza right in the heart of downtown, or stay close to home and dine at one of the many delicious options inside Saskatoon hotels (like the Four Seasons Restaurant inside the Park Town Hotel, or the Delta Downtown’s everpopular Aroma Resto Bar).
Whether you and your family are into sweet, salty, sour, or savoury, Saskatoon is a food lover’s destination. CHECK OUT THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN SASKATOON
