WELCOME TO
discover middlesbrough festival
Hello Friends, I am thrilled to deliver this year’s Discover Middlesbrough program with the valued help of an array of contributors who work constantly to champion Middlesbrough and its heritage all yearround. I wanted to start by offering my thanks and appreciation to everyone who has been involved in pulling the program together this year, sure to be one of our best yet. A special thanks to Middlesbrough Council’s Community Grants team for making this festival possible. Some of my highlights this year include a free plate of tasty panacalty (p.14) and the opportunity to soak up a new exhibition detailing the historic and lost pubs of Middlesbrough (p.12). Not that it’s all about food and liquid refreshment - there is also a rare opportunity to get a behind the scenes tour of Teesside’s very own vinyl record manufacturer Press On (p.11). Have a good look through this year’s wonderful program and find something that appeals to you too. As ever we are always looking for new groups and organisations to be involved in programming the festival. So please do get in touch if you have an idea or a proposal for an event. People Powered: Stories from the River Tees
Middlesbrough Collection: Soft Structures
Until 7 Jan 2024
Until 31 March 2024
People Powered: Stories from the River Tees is a new exhibition in partnership with MIMA and the National Portrait Gallery. Alongside works from the National Portrait Gallery collection with connections to the city and the River Tees, the exhibition showcases a number of new commissions. These include works by local artists such as young people from the National Saturday Club in collaboration with artist Bobby Benjamin; pupils from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in collaboration with artist Diane Watson and a series of river portraits created with photographer and story catcher Gilmar Ribeiro. It also includes new works from The Club, a group of elders working with artist to produce new artworks for the MIMA shop.
Soft Structures reflects on the invisible threads and undocumented connections that underpin creative lives and communities. Through drawing, painting, video, installation, textile and ceramics, the exhibition presents newly commissioned artwork by Fiona Larkin and Ian Giles and pieces from the Middlesbrough Collection cared for by MIMA.
The exhibition is in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery and funded by The National Heritage Lottery Fund and Art Fund. mima.art/exhibition/people-poweredstories-from-the-river-tees/
