Chapel,
I am thrilled to deliver this year’s Discover Middlesbrough program with the valued help of an array of contributors who work constantly to champion Middlesbrough and its heritage all yearround. I wanted to start by offering my thanks and appreciation to everyone who has been involved in pulling the program together this year, sure to be one of our best yet. A special thanks to Middlesbrough Council’s Community Grants team for making this festival possible.
Some of my highlights this year include a free plate of tasty panacalty (p.14) and the opportunity to soak up a new exhibition detailing the historic and lost pubs of Middlesbrough (p.12). Not that it’s all about food and liquid refreshment - there is also a rare opportunity to get a behind the scenes tour of Teesside’s very own vinyl record manufacturer Press On (p.11). Have a good look through this year’s wonderful program and find something that appeals to you too.
As ever we are always looking for new groups and organisations to be involved in programming the festival. So please do get in touch if you have an idea or a proposal for an event.

The cemetery began its life in the seventeenth century when the religious sect The Society of Friends or Quakers as they were commonly known used land at Airesome known as “The Land of the People of God” for the burial of their dead. The local authority purchased parcels of land surrounding the site for the new municipal cemetery called the “New Cemetery” which opened in 1869. Today known as Linthorpe Cemetery and Nature Reserve it continues to be a green oasis and home for wildlife and a repository of the history and heritage of the town.

Middlesbrough has long been associated with a vibrant pub culture from the modern town’s early development through to recent decades. A collaborative project between Navigator North, Teesside Archives and Heritage Unlocked explores the heritage of public houses in Middlesbrough through an exhibition and events programme and sees the launch of a new publication by Dr Tosh Warwick. Recently, the extensive research and photographic collection of the late Les Bulman, who spent decades researching and capturing snapshots of Middlesbrough’s pubs, clubs and nightclubs, has been gifted to Teesside Archives. The collection reveals stories of lost or much changed buildings and communities that were once a rich part of everyday life in Middlesbrough. The exhibition will feature photographs and archival material looking at early pubs in the town, architectural gems, connections to sport and leisure as well as pubs reimagined, such as The Masham – home of Navigator North and reinvented as a creative space in 2021.

On 2 July 1940, the 15,000 ton Blue Star luxury liner, S.S Arandora Star, was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, 75 miles off the north-west coast of Ireland. Bound for Canada, she was carrying over 1200 passengers, consisting mainly of Italian, German, and Austrian internees, plus a military guard of British soldiers and a crew of Merchant Navy seamen.
Over half of those on board perished, including nearly 450 Italians, many of whom had been arrested and interned in the summer of 1940. Of those, thirteen men were from Teesside, where they had made their homes, married, raised families, and become well-known and respected members of the local business community.

Middlesbrough has long been associated with a vibrant pub culture from the modern town’s early development through to recent decades. A collaborative project between Navigator North, Teesside Archives and Heritage
Unlocked explores the heritage of public houses in Middlesbrough through an exhibition and events programme and sees the launch of a new publication by Dr Tosh Warwick.
Recently, the extensive research and photographic collection of the late Les Bulman, who spent decades researching and capturing snapshots
of Middlesbrough’s pubs, clubs and nightclubs, has been gifted to Teesside Archives.
