OUR REGION

OUR UNIQUE HERITAGE

o

or more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of the Greater Port Macquarie region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river and around the lakes allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. Today, with its own unique heritage, Port Macquarie is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW coast, and also one of the fastest growing regions in NSW. Discovered by John Oxley in 1818 and named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, our first visitors were convicts sent to the Port Macquarie penal settlement in 1821 to serve time for secondary offences. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. Port Macquarie was opened up to free settlers from 1830 and remained a convict town until 1847. Evidence of our convict past can be viewed at various locations including the convict built St Thomas’ Church, the well of the Female Factory in Munster Street ( Map ref K8), the well of the 1840 gaol located within the Ibis Styles Hotel and at the Port Macquarie Museum. The historic cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street ( Map ref J9) is home to the remains of many of our early settlers including convicts, military officers and free settlers. Over the next four years Port Macquarie and the Hastings region will reach a number of milestones in their European discovery and settlement. 2018 marks two hundred years since Surveyor General John Oxley’s journey of discovery during which he and his party travelled to the place he named Port Macquarie. A number of commemorative events and activities are planned throughout the Hastings region across this year.

OUR REGION

our Koalas Port Macquarie is the place to celebrate one of Australia’s most iconic animals - the koala. Here you can not only get up close and personal with our furry friends at Billabong Zoo (see page 21), you can also visit the world’s first koala hospital, or take the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail to see over 60+ beautiful koala sculptures. is a research institution that collaborates and works with a number of universities and other institutions. Primary reasons for admission to care are being hit by cars, dog attacks and the bacterial infection Chlamydia which causes urogenital disease (commonly called wet bottom) and ocular (conjunctivitis). Other reasons include bushfires and issues that occur due to loss of habitat. WAT O N G A W O N D E R

The Koala Hospital adjacent to Roto House is the world’s only hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of wild koalas. Founded by Jean and Max Starr in 1973, the hospital is entirely self-funded from donations, bequests, adoptions and their shop. It is managed by the charitable organisation, the Koala Preservation Society of Australia Inc., only has three paid positions, 170 volunteers and hosts one overseas volunteer for one month every month - a position that is in very high demand. Facilities include a treatment clinic, eight internal intensive care units, six outdoor intensive care units and 30 rehabilitation yards. There are a small number of non releasable koala patients who are permanent residents (nine in total) that are available for the public to see. This unique Hospital not only treats up to 250 sick and/or injured koalas each year, it successfully rehabilitates and returns about 6070% of their admissions to the wild. Koalas are admitted from all over NSW. The Koala Hospital

Of the 900 species of eucalypt trees that grow in Australia, approximately only 60 of them across Australia are ‘food trees’ so koalas’ habitat is determined by the availability of these trees. Australian Music legend John Williamson is also passionate about saving koalas. John has been a patron of the Koala Preservation Society of Australia ever since he met one of their founders, the late Jean Starr, in the early eighties. During a visit to the Koala Hospital, he witnessed an emergency rescue call come in. The entire experience was so impressive for John that it inspired him to write the song “Good Bye Blinky Bill”, which became enormously popular throughout Australia. He very generously donated the proceeds from his song to the Koala Preservation Society. John raised a considerable amount of money that enabled the Koala Hospital to build a new “John Williamson Wing” which houses their intensive care unit. Visitors to the Koala Hospital can view the clinic through a large window and see the koalas being treated. You can also observe the care and feeding of the koalas, however the koalas in recovery are behind screens.

Admission is free and donations are welcome - you can even adopt a koala! Located at Lord St and Roto Place, Port Macquarie, 6584 1522, koalahospital.org.au Map ref L10 The Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail ensures guaranteed sightings of 60+ koalas scattered across the Port Macquarie-Hastings region! This award-winning Trail won Gold in the 2017 NSW Tourism Awards and represented NSW in the Australian Tourism Finals in February this year. What’s more, TripAdvisor ranks Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail as #3 of 76 Things to Do in Port Macquarie. There are 12 Hello Koalas sculptures right in the heart of town and 19 sculptures a few minutes away by car, in high profile locations such as the Koala Hospital and Sea Acres Rainforest Centre, so even if you are in Port for just a day or two, you can easily see around 30 sculptures on the Trail. Each one metre high Hello Koalas sculpture has been designed and hand painted by a selected artist, many local, and each Hello Koalas sculpture is sponsored by a business or community group, making the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail freely available for everyone to enjoy. Don’t forget to takes lots of photos and post them on facebook or Instagram and of course, we love receiving 5 star reviews on TripAdvisor! A free Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail Guide is available from participating partners like the Glasshouse Arts and Visitor Centre or download the Trail Guide pdf from www.hellokoalas.com.

The hospital has a "koalaseum" which is a unique museum outlining the history of the cause of decline of koalas in Australia, information on their biology, reasons for admissions to care, research etc. There is a microscope and hands on items for visitors to look at as well.

Just keep in mind, that some sculptures may move around so it’s wise to check the website. Or you can email info@hellokoalas.com or send a text to 0416 641 482. We are always available to help our visitors and locals in their Hello Koalas treasure hunt.

The Koala Hospital is open daily from 8am until 4.30pm with feeding times at 8am and 3pm. Free Walk & Talk tours are conducted at 3pm daily where the koalas will be fed and the volunteer will explain how the koalas came into their care.

And check out the latest news about the unfolding program of events and activities planned for the 2nd Hello Koalas Festival, 7 – 11 June 2018 (www.hellokoalas.com/ festival) or follow Hello Koalas on facebook (@hellokoalas1).

OUR REGION

With its idyllic climate, stunning beaches, natural beauty and perfect position nestled between Sydney and Brisbane, it's no wonder Port Macquarie is extremely popular with visitors and locals alike. As one of the fastest growing regions in NSW, it is now a vibrant centre with families, sea changers and tree changers flocking to our patch of paradise. 31.43°S ————— — 152.90°E

PORT MACQUARIE Port Macquarie (or "Port" to locals) offers the visitor so many opportunities to share our fabulous lifestyle. Apart from enjoying our relaxed coastal vibe or taking in the breathtaking scenery of our hinterland, there are a myriad of events throughout the year to enjoy - from food, wine and beer festivals (Tastings on Hastings, Slice of Haven, Blues and BBQ Festival and Port Macquarie Beer+Cider Festival), music festivals (Festival of the Sun, Wildwood Music Festival) to major sporting events (Ironman Australia, NSW Touch - State Cups), there is something for everyone. Recently we have been recognised as a World Festival & Events City by the International and Events Association.

the area a face-lift to enhance the community experience. Sunsets are simply not to be missed from here! Nearby at Town Square, works have also taken shape to provide a more vibrant area with al fresco dining and space to host markets, events and festivals.

Port can proudly claim that is has become a food-force to be reckoned with, with many restaurants and cafes truly embracing the locavore tenet. From a sublime dining experience at our one-hatted restaurant to a relaxed coffee, juice or smoothie by the beach, Port Macquarie has it all!

Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park (Entry through the historic cemetery) – covering 52 hectares, the Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park preserves an area of natural bushland with 3kms of walking tracks, boardwalks, and a new 600 metre cycleway. Here visitors can wander and enjoy the beauty of the area and its eco-systems. Map ref J9

Located just five minutes drive from Port Macquarie Town Centre it is a great spot to take in the Hastings River. Facilities include picnic tables, BBQs, a playground, lots of parking and a nearby cafe. You can even take the short ferry ride over to the North Shore from here. Dolphins are frequently spotted along the shore as they frolic in the shallows of the river. Be sure to look out for them! Map ref H3

Tacking Point Named by Matthew Flinders in July 1802. The lighthouse is the third oldest in the country and has recently been restored. It was built in 1879 to warn ships of the rocks near the shore and was converted to automatic operation in 1919. Apart from the interest of the lighthouse itself, Tacking Point with its elevation above the surrounding coastline offers superb views to both the north and the south – in October and November be sure to look out for whales. WAUCHOPE +HINTERLAND

31.47°S —————— 152.73°E

Wauchope (Pronounced war-hope) - 20 minutes west of Port Macquarie. Surrounded by Australia’s most extensive Blackbutt forest, it was here in the mid 1800s that pioneers made the town famous as a timber town. Today, Wauchope is the gateway to the hinterland and has many unique businesses and fabulous boutique shops with friendly old fashioned service. As an RV Friendly town, and the first Motor Cycle Friendly Town in NSW, Wauchope makes for a great stop or a day out. If you’d like to taste some of the region’s fresh and tasty produce, head to the Wauchope Farmers’ Markets at the Wauchope Showground held every 4th Saturday of the month. Abundance Lifestyle + Garden Centre and Café Ideally situated just a three minute country drive off both the Pacific and Oxley Highways at Sancrox. Located at the Vanderley Production Nursery site, this beautiful complex is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The onsite wholesale production nursery ensures a good supply of locally and highly professionally grown and conditioned plants to the Abundance Garden Centre - a bonus for gardeners and landscapers in the Hastings area and beyond. An excellent selection of pots, water features and garden art complement the green-life. John van der Ley and his team of horticulturalists offer expert advice and friendly service for all gardening requirements. Complete your experience at ABUNDANCE CAFÉ where you can sit back, relax and dine overlooking the picturesque lake. Well priced breakfasts, healthy lunches, morning and afternoon teas and daily blackboard specials are on offer 7 days a week (closed public holidays)...so take a drive down into the country and experience Abundance for yourself!

Hinterland To the west of Port Macquarie is true paradise, with breathtaking scenery of rolling hills and lush rainforest. The Hinterland is a truly spectacular sight and is popular with bush walkers, four-wheel drive enthusiasts or those just keen to explore. Take time to discover this region with a day trip or two. Perhaps stay overnight in one of the many cottages or B&B’s scattered along the way. We have outlined some trails you may like to try, or you may prefer to make up your own, but whatever you do don’t miss this vast area of natural beauty. Bellrowan Valley Horseriding has some wonderful trails if you want to take in the breathtaking views on horseback – located in Beechwood, just north of Wauchope. Comboyne A tranquil place of rolling green pastures, forests, streams and waterfalls located about a 1 hour drive from Port Macquarie. Here you’ll find the Boorganna Nature Reserve, a large remnant of the forest that once covered the whole plateau. There is a fantastic 2.7km walking track that starts at the picnic area where you can see many differing bird species and lush rainforest plants. Allow a few hours for this. While in Comboyne, you must drive a further 25kms to visit Ellenborough Falls in the Manning Valley - a truly amazing sight as water plunges into a gorge 200m below. There is a viewing platform and a timber walkway for those who would like to walk to the bottom of the falls. Whilst the road is mostly unsealed, it is definitely worth the trip (allow around 45 minutes for the drive from Comboyne). They have two walks, one 500m to the lower falls, and another 700m to the knoll plus there is a Kiosk and picnic facilities which makes it a great lunchtime stop.

Featuring first-class amenities, quality homes and spacious lots, the resort is set amongst tall timbers, beautiful landscaping and adjacent to Queens Lake. Best of all.....NO STAMP DUTY and NO EXIT FEES! Over 55s Living never looked so good. Dunbogan Just past Laurieton, Dunbogan is a little piece of paradise. Beautiful beaches and river fishing make it a unique location catering for everyone. This is home of Kattang Nature Reserve, which boasts the most magnificent views. Enjoy wildlife and native flowers on one of the two walking tracks (see page 28). Pilots Beach A fantastic and secluded beach for the kids, as it is naturally protected. It also has excellent BBQ facilities and a playground area with showers to rinse off.

Crowdy Bay National Park Take the road from Laurieton and head south and you will enter the northern section of Crowdy Bay National Park. This area of parkland was first sighted by Captain Cook in 1770. He saw Aborigines standing on what is now known as Diamond Head and named the promontory Indian Head. In more recent times a man named Ernie Metcalf lived on the headland. He was the subject of ‘The Man on the Headland’ written by Kylie Tennant. He built a hut for Tennant who subsequently gifted it to the park. It was restored in 1980 and is now one of the park’s attractions. Diamond Head itself is quite striking. It rises 113 metres and is edged by the wetlands and heathlands of the coastal plain. The park is ideal for bushwalking, birdwatching, fishing (from the rock platforms you can catch groper, bream, tailor and drummer) and swimming. > For more information on our region visit our website discoverportmacquarie.com.au

Our Beaches For surfing, the best spots are Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Rainbow and North Haven beaches. The Breakwall at Town Beach works best with swell from the south through to the north-east. The Middle has some powerful lefts and is for the experienced surfer only, while Flagstaff is the protected southern headland of Town Beach. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found with swells from the south to east with offshore north-west winds through to south-east winds. Lighthouse Beach has a protected northern corner that handles north to north-east swell. Further south, Cathie is an open beach, which can offer powerful waves with south to east swell. Rainbow Beach is a protected southern headland with a right point break and beach breaks. Grants Headland picks up the smallest of swells and is best in the north-east swell with west to north-east winds. North Haven (Grants Beach) offers beach breaks with the best waves south to east swell, and works best with west to southeast winds. The bar can hand out some large waves but tidal flow from the river affects the wave quality. (With thanks to Port Macquarie Surf School for surfing information).

Port Jet Cruise Adventures For an unforgettable experience on the water, Port Jet Cruise Adventures has it all. Experience the thrill of the ocean on board Wave Rider. Their newest 18 passenger 900 horsepower super boat will have you surfing the waves and cruising up and down Port Macquarie’s remarkable coastline or speeding along the stunning Hastings River. Wave Rider is equipped with state of the art equipment and technology. Custom-built for Port Macquarie and the ocean conditions experienced here, she will provide the most exciting, fast yet smooth comfortable ride for her passengers. There is a style of ride to suit everyone, whether it be an exhilarating Ocean Blast, a Whale Watching adventure or a River Cruise (afternoon, sunset or eco), or maybe a Dolphin Spotting Cruise is more your style. If you want to take control yourself then hire a Jet Ski and zoom around in the 9 hectare dedicated ski park Book your next function or team building event with them and give your group an experience to remember. (See inside cover) Greater Port Macquarie offers wonderful inland waterways with the Hastings, Maria, Wilson and Camden Haven Rivers, Lake Cathie and three lakes at Laurieton - Stingray Creek, Queens Lake and Watson Taylor Lake. Learn more about the history of our great rivers by going to oroh.com.au and take the Camden Haven Trail or the Hastings Trail. Activities are only limited by your imagination, with a great choice of professional river and ocean cruise specialists where you can take in the

scenery, watch the dolphins play or be taken to where the fish are guaranteed to be biting. Avid anglers will be in paradise as they hunt their favourite species from one of the many fishing spots along the rivers, lakes, beaches, and breakwalls. Local fishing and boating centres scattered around the area are always happy to give a few tips about what’s biting, as well as being able to cater to all your bait and tackle needs. Beach fishing is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Rocky Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach and Grants Beach are all popular spots. If you want somewhere to get your 4WD dirty, try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach – all of which have a 4WD entrance. A licence is required for recreational fishing (service.nsw. gov.au) and you also require a permit to drive on the approved 4WD beaches. Beach driving permits are available from the Visitor Information Centre located at the Glasshouse, Cnr of Clarence & Hay Streets. Map ref K8. The rebellion is not in the clothes you wear, it is not in the appearance you portray, it is not in the music you listen to. The rebellion is the process of forgetting everything you know and asking the questions to what everything is again, where you are now questioning everything for you to decide, rewiring your every circuit by erasing everything you know or thought you knew and were taught. The rebellion is tough. The rebellion is not always pretty. The rebellion is first in the mind and the rebel is in the act. — rex x.

"An authentic Food Experience focused on “real” food, sustainable methods and utilising as many purely Organic ingredients as possible."

Owner Michael Burkhardt with daughter Ashleigh

Walking down Short Street in Port Macquarie, you’ll be greeted with a number of ways to inspire your inner foodie. It’s quickly becoming a speciality food strip where you can find anything from those hard to source Asian ingredients to some of the tastiest bread and desserts that you’ve ever tried. There’s one little shop with a modest façade, a warm and welcoming counter and normally a line-up of people excited to get the day’s fresh treats. From first glance, this place has a lot more going on than most people would expect. Behind the doors of this German inspired Bakery, which has been a local business on the scene for the last 12 years, Michael Burkhardt and his family have spent the last six years creating an authentic Food Experience focused on “real” food, sustainable methods and utilising as many purely Organic ingredients as possible. The term “Organic”, for this German Pastry Chef/ Baker, is definitely more than just a current day marketing term - it’s a way of growing, sourcing and baking on a day-to-day basis. Michael puts real passion and dedication into his work to ensure his loyal following of customers are getting a genuine paddock to plate experience. The best example of this next level of baking, is the herd of Heritage Breed Scottish Highland Cattle he and his family breed and raise locally on their farm. The challenge being, these cattle need a minimum of 3 years before they reach a maturity level for use. The result is a healthier and more flavoursome meat, well worth the time and energy required in caring for the herd. The meat from this particular breed is 50% lower in cholesterol and has significantly higher iron levels than that of common breeds and is used in his sensational meat

pie and sausage roll range, of which there are Gluten Free options as well. The dedication doesn’t stop there - Michael is also fully committed to sustainable practices and chooses to use a Stoneground Unbleached Heritage Flour from Wholegrain Milling. He also uses “Salt Of The Earth” hand harvested sea salt and fully filtered, fluoride-free water in all of his products. With this kind of passion for their products, it is no wonder that Michael’s daughter, Ashleigh, has joined in the food side of things by preparing her own line of Vegan Raw Slices, which are refined sugar free, dairy free and gluten free. Her desserts are packed with nutritious ingredients and flavour. The only way to believe it is to try some for yourself! So the next time you’re strolling down Short Street and notice the boutique food stores that may inspire your cooking, be sure to pop into Burkhardt’s Organic Bakery and taste the difference of what experience and a passion for healthy and sustainable food is like. Burkhardt’s Organic Bakery Open Monday to Friday 7am until 5pm and Saturday 7am until 3pm 1/15 Short Street, Port Macquarie Map Ref J9 Phone (02) 6583 4699 Burkhardtsorganic.com.au
