or more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of the Greater Port Macquarie region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river and around the lakes allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. Today, with its own unique heritage, PORT MACQUARIE is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW Coast. Discovered by John Oxley in 1818 and named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, our first visitors were convicts sent to the Port Macquarie penal settlement in 1821 to serve time for secondary offences. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. Port Macquarie was opened up to free settlers from 1830 and remained a convict town until 1847. Evidence of our convict past can be viewed at various locations including the convict built St Thomas’ Church, the well of the Female Factory in Munster Street ( Map ref K8), the well of the 1840 gaol located within the HW Boutique

Hotel and at the Port Macquarie Museum. The historic cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street ( Map ref J9) is home to the remains of many of our early settlers including convicts, military officers and free settlers. PORT MACQUARIE MUSEUM is an award winning museum featuring themed displays from the first settlers right through to today. Located in Port Macquarie’s CBD, it is one of the few surviving early commercial and residential buildings in Port Macquarie and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. From 1910-1920, Thomas Dick captured the lives of a small number of Birpai community members, as seen in the above photo. Thomas Dick’s grandfather had settled in Port Macquarie in 1841 after migrating from England. Thomas remained in the area all his life and his family still live in the area today. Thomas was an oyster farmer and amateur scientist with a keen interest in natural history, in local history, and in the culture of the region’s Aboriginals. Thomas Dick’s photography provides a magnificent visual record of Aboriginal life in the Hastings district. With special thanks to John Thomas Dick (eldest grandson) and the Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council for permission to use the above photograph.

THE KOALA HOSPITAL adjacent to Roto House is the world’s first hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of koalas. Reserve, which boasts the most magnificent views. Enjoy wildlife and native flowers on one of the two walking tracks (see page 30). > PILOTS BEACH is a fantastic beach for the kids, as it is naturally protected. It also has excellent BBQ facilities and a playground area with showers to rinse off. > CROWDY BAY NATIONAL PARK - Take the road from Laurieton and head south and you will enter the northern section of Crowdy Bay National Park. This area of parkland was first sighted by Captain Cook in 1770. He saw Aborigines standing on what is now known as Diamond Head and named the promontory Indian Head. In more recent times a man

named Ernie Metcalf lived on the headland. He was the subject of ‘The Man on the Headland’ written by Kylie Tennant. He built a hut for Tennant who subsequently gifted it to the park. It was restored in 1980 and is now one of the park’s attractions. Diamond Head itself is quite striking. It rises 113 metres and is edged by the wetlands and heathlands of the coastal plain. The park is ideal for bushwalking, birdwatching, fishing (from the rock platforms you can catch groper, bream, tailor and drummer) and swimming. The leading team hail from Mexico and each bring their own inspiration and experience to a variety of dishes combining fresh local produce and traditional Mexican ingredients. Primely positioned in the Clarence House development, BILLS Fishhouse dons a casual urbanity which is echoed throughout the well designed space. There’s a carefully curated sea-toplate menu with Mediterranean hints and an east meets west influence. The focus has been staying true to fresh, seasonal ingredients that underpin the brand's ethos of simple, uncomplicated eating. If you want coastal ambience with a contemporary relaxed vibe, an evening at BILLS Fishhouse needs to be at the top of your list. • THE BURGER REBELLION is Port Macquarie’s first Gourmet Burger restaurant. After working as a fine dining chef all over the world, owner Matt Conway has returned to introduce Port Macquarie to the world of Gourmet Burgers. Matt’s love of food and all things chilli is evident and the chilli sauce display is a major feature in the shop. For those who dare to indulge, try the “Man vs. Burger” eating challenge! They have some great ales to wash down your burger and are proud to stock local brewery, Moorebeer. Above all, The Burger Rebellion prides itself on providing great quality food in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Locally sourced Oysters will be a highlight on the BILLS Fishhouse menu

T H E M E N U . Together, Smith and Harris have curated a stellar menu that boasts subtle Mediterranean hints and an east meets west influence. The obvious focus has been staying true to the fresh, seasonal ingredients and the brand's roots of uncomplicated eating. Everything has been designed to be shared among groups - big or small. Only sustainably sourced seafood makes it into BILLS Fishhouse - because as we’ve said before, this isn’t your standard fish 'n chips shop. Expect to see Oysters, Blue Swimmer Crabs and clams from the local Mid North Coast region, along with lush, quality produce from Near River Farms. Wood-smoked and chargrilled are their secret weapons in the kitchen when it comes to creating the flavours being served up in this house. Pleasant surprises like Hand Made Sausage using hormone free pork has got us salivating, along with their take on Ceviche, dubbed Chopped & Chunky Salmon - the raw dish comes served with quail egg and preserved carrots. anticipated addition to the local restaurant landscape. Oh, did we mention the Seafood Share? Forget your preconceived notions of seafood platters, these guys have an insta-worthy offering loaded with abundant, fresh seafood that only dreams are made of - perfect for a sunny afternoon paired with a crisp Rosé! The surprises certainly aren’t confined to the kitchen; the bar packs just as much punch. Jugs of Pimms, Aperol Spritz and expertly paired wines (they are even experimenting with a smoked cocktail - stay tuned) are ready to satisfy your thirst. Harris has been clever when it comes to the beverage offerings, having consulted Sommeliers to nail this element. The fact they are continuing service from lunch through to dinner - yes people of Port Macquarie, this is not a misprint - BILLS Fishhouse will trade from lunch right through to dinner and serve food, beverages and coffee the whole time. The whole time - means there really has never been a better excuse to catch up with friends over an afternoon Negroni or two. Ok, maybe three.

Whatever your taste, The Fish Box will be loaded with the good stuff and will see you facing off with your seafood and selecting sides before tucking in. Port Macquarie is as synonymous with coastal culture as thongs and Vegemite, and we predict this place will soon be infused into that subculture. So, if you’ve got a hankering for something from under the sea or are simply just a fan of good honest food, there’s no "de-baiting"; BILLS Fishhouse is quite the catch.

The Rebellion People have come to be confused about what the rebellion really is. The rebellion is not in the clothes you wear, it is not in the appearance you portray, it is not in the music you listen to. The rebellion is the process of forgetting everything you know and asking the questions to what everything is again, where you are now questioning everything for you to decide, rewiring your every circuit by erasing everything you know or thought you knew and were taught. The rebellion is tough. The rebellion is not always pretty. The rebellion is first in the mind and the rebel is in the act. — rex x.
