W E LCO M E Firstly, we would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of this beautiful region, the Birpai Aboriginal people, and would like to pay our respects to Elders past and present. So much has changed for us all since our last edition. This time a year ago we saw our region hit hard by bushfires and immediately followed by the COVID-19 global pandemic. We are very proud of our local community and the resilience demonstrated during this somewhat crazy year. We feel privileged now to be producing our first ever quarterly issue for Summer 2020/21 showcasing some of the best of what our region has to offer. It's only with the amazing continued support from our local businesses that we can produce this publication. We are a locally owned and independent publication designed to inspire visitors and provide them with all the information they need. Discover Magazine, together with Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Association, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and all our tourism-related businesses hope you enjoy your holidays!

For more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of the Greater Port Macquarie region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river and around the lakes allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. Today, with its own unique heritage, Port Macquarie is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW coast, and also one of the fastest growing regions in NSW. Discovered by John Oxley in 1818 and named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, our first visitors were convicts sent to the Port Macquarie penal settlement in 1821 to serve time for secondary offences. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. Port Macquarie was opened up to free settlers from 1830 and remained a convict town until 1847. Evidence of our convict past can be viewed at various locations including the convict built St Thomas’ Church, the well of the Female Factory in Munster Street ( Map ref K8), the well of the 1840 gaol located within the Ibis Styles Hotel and at the Port Macquarie Museum. The historic cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street ( Map ref J9) is home to the remains of many of our early settlers including convicts, military officers and free settlers. The Port Macquarie-Hastings region is currently reaching a number of milestones in their European discovery and settlement. 2018 marked two hundred years since Surveyor General John Oxley’s journey of discovery during which he and his party travelled to the place he named Port Macquarie. Next year (2021) marks the bicentenary of the first settlement in Port Macquarie. The bicentenary is an opportunity for our community and visitors to come together and commemorate our past; our present and our future. A range of activities are planned from 10-18 April 2021 - To walk our place and discover the stories that weave together to make Port MacquarieHastings the region it was, it is, and will be. 4

KOAL AS ⟶ Koala climbing at The Koala Hospital

Port Macquarie is the place to celebrate one of Australia’s most iconic animals - the koala. Here you can not only get up close and personal with our furry friends at Billabong Zoo (see page 11), you can also visit the world’s first koala hospital, or take the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail to see over 60+ beautiful koala sculptures.

KOA L A S M A K E G R E AT M U M S The gestation period is approximately 35 days and at birth, the unfurred, blind ‘pinkie’ crawls unaided from the birth canal, up through the fur and into the vertical pouch and attaches to one of the two teats. Once their eyes are opened, the joeys detach from the teat but remain in the pouch for around four to five months, growing and becoming fully furred. Anywhere from 250 grams weight onwards, the joey will become active, occasionally popping its head out and sniffing the air. Around this time the joey begins to stimulate its mother’s cloaca to produce a greenish substance called ‘pap’. This is passed down from the caecum, a specialised section of the intestinal tract where fermentation of the leaf occurs, for the joeys to eat. The ‘pap’ contains vital micro organisms (bacteria) that inoculate the joey’s gut system to enable them to digest eucalypt leaf. Without pap, a joey cannot eat eucalypt leaf and will not survive. From around six months of age, the joey will start emerging onto the mother's belly and by eight months the joey becomes a ‘back young’, staying on or near the mother. By 12 months, the koala is usually weaned. Female koalas are excellent mothers, and are highly protective of their young.

T H E K OA L A H O S P I TA L The Koala Hospital adjacent to Roto House is the world’s only hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of wild koalas. Founded by Jean and Max Starr in 1973, the hospital is entirely self-funded from donations, bequests, adoptions and their shop. It is managed by the charitable organisation, the Koala Conservation Australia, only has five paid staff, 170 volunteers and hosts one overseas volunteer for one month every month - a position that is in very high demand. Facilities include a treatment clinic, eight internal intensive care units, six outdoor intensive care units and 30 rehabilitation yards. There are a small number of non releasable koala patients who are permanent residents (nine in total) that are available for the public to see. The Koala Hospital is a research institution that collaborates and works with a number of universities and other institutions. Up until about five years ago, this unique Hospital would treat up to 200-250 sick and/or injured koalas each year, and successfully rehabilitate and return about 60-70% of their admissions to the wild. Koalas are admitted from all over NSW. Primary reasons for admission to care are being hit by cars, dog attacks and the bacterial infection Chlamydia which causes urogenital disease (commonly called wet bottom) and ocular (conjunctivitis). Other reasons include bushfires and issues that occur due to loss of habitat. In particular, last summer's devastating bushfires across

the region had a huge impact on the local koala population and the hospital was inundated with injured koalas. How can we help the koala population? We need to ensure their genetic diversity is conserved by protecting their habitat, reducing vehicle strikes, dog attacks and disease - this is fundamental to their population health. How are the admitted Koalas named? Usually by the person who found them and the location in which they were found. Of the 900 species of eucalypt trees that grow in Australia, approximately only 60 of them across Australia are ‘food trees’ so koalas’ habitat is determined by the availability of these trees. Australian Music legend John Williamson is also passionate about saving koalas. John has been a patron of the Koala Conservation Australia ever since he met one of their founders, the late Jean Starr, in the early eighties. During a visit to the Koala Hospital, he witnessed an emergency rescue call come in. The entire experience was so impressive for John that it inspired him to write the song “Good Bye Blinky Bill”, which became enormously popular throughout Australia. He very generously donated the proceeds from his song to Koala Conservation Australia. John raised a considerable amount of money that enabled the Koala Hospital to build a new “John Williamson Wing” which houses their intensive care unit. The Koala Hospital has plans for a multi-

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, a number of changes have occured. All visitors need to book online prior to arrival or they will not be permitted onto the premises (koalahospital.org.au). The Koala Hospital is open daily from 8.30am and feeding times are at 8.30am and 3pm. The free tour has been cancelled for the time being and the museum is currently closed. Visitors to the Koala Hospital can view the clinic through a large window and see the koalas being treated. You can also observe the care and feeding of the koalas, however the koalas in recovery are behind screens. Did you know that 100,000 tourists visit the The Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie hospital each year? Admission is free and donations are welcome - you can even adopt a koala! “Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail is a World First”, says UK public art expert, Elaine Burke. “There is simply no other sculpture trail in the world quite like it and the only one dedicated to koalas!” Margret Meagher, Founder, Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail tells her story. I thought of the idea for a sculpture trail in Port Macquarie in 2011, after moving from Sydney, following a lifetime working in tourism and the arts. The Sydney Opera House and Art Gallery of NSW were my second homes in those days. Now life has come full circle as I look after a public art trail in my regional hometown and take my Hello Koalas sculptures on tour. Last year we visited the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney (October/ November 2019) for a travelling exhibition and in April 2021, we are exhibiting 22 Hello Koalas sculptures at the Australian Botanic Garden at Mt Annan, near Campbelltown. We have consistently won business and tourism awards since 2015 including the 2019 Regional Business Award for Excellence in Innovation and Gold for Cultural Tourism in the 2019 NSW Regional Tourism Awards which led us to the Australian Finals, achieving 4th place out of a field of 8 national tourism attractions. We estimate that over 1 million people a year engage with our Hello Koalas sculptures in Port Macquarie – hugging them, smiling at them, taking selfies and family photos with them and talking about them on facebook, Instagram and TripAdvisor (#hellokoalas, @ hellokoalas). TripAdvisor ranks Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail #3 of 44 Things to Do and #1 Sights and Landmarks in Port Macquarie. This social media coverage reinforces the fact that Hello Koalas sculptures are wondrous little characters, designed by talented Australian artists. And the sculptures love receiving the attention! Many people see our Hello Koalas as loveable personalities and it is not unusual to find small children feeding them fallen gum leaves for lunch. When we started

DISCOVER SUMMER 2020 -21

planning the Trail, we aimed to create 50 one metre high fibreglass sculptures but Hello Koalas is an infectious project and we now have 78 sculptures to share with our community and visitors to our region. And more are on their way in local artists’ studios. Sometimes our Hello Koalas sculptures go on tour so not all the sculptures are available to see when people visit but there are always 50+ Hello Koalas sculptures on display. We keep people aware of their movements on our website – www.hellokoalas.com and we have a 24/7 Hotline so people can email (info@ hellokoalas.com), text or phone us with their queries (0416 641 482). Each year we hold the Hello Koalas Festival and our 5th Festival will be held over Saturday and Sunday, 25 and 26 September 2021. The Festival highlight is the Hello Koalas Treasure Hunt, presented in association with our charity partner, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Discover 30 specially selected Hello Koalas and post your favourites on social media. Everyone who completes the Treasure Hunt is awarded a Certificate of Achievement and there are special prizes to be won, like helicopter flights over Port Macquarie. Simply register online to participate (www.hellokoalas.com/festival). One of our principal aims of the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail is to promote koala preservation. We want to protect koalas from road accidents, inquisitive dogs in backyards, loss of habitat through urbanisation and drought, and diseases like chlamydia. Join our creative journey of fun and adventure while learning about koala conservation. A good place to start is the Hello Koalas Gift Shop where you can see unique and stylish souvenirs and gifts plus 8+ Hello Koalas sculptures on the Trail including Frankie Firefighter, Chief - Westpac Rescue Helicopter Pilot, Buzzy Bee, I’m No Bear and our brand new Winnie the Unicorn Koala (arriving January 2021).

Local Beaches. For surfing, the best spots are Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Rainbow and North Haven beaches. The Breakwall at Town Beach works best with swell from the south through to the north-east. The Middle has some powerful lefts and is for the experienced surfer only, while Flagstaff is the protected southern headland of Town Beach. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found with swells from the south to east with offshore north-west winds through to south-east winds. Lighthouse Beach has a protected northern corner that handles north to north-east swell. Further south, Cathie is an open beach, which can offer powerful waves with south to east swell. Rainbow Beach is a protected southern headland with a right point break and beach breaks. Grants Headland picks up the smallest of swells and is best in the north-east swell with west to northeast winds. North Haven (Grants Beach) offers beach breaks with the best waves south to east swell, and works best with west to south-east winds. The bar can hand out some large waves but tidal flow from the river affects the wave quality. (With thanks to Port Macquarie Surf School for surfing information). PORT MACQUARIE SURF SCHOOL Learning to surf is fun and easy, especially at the multi award winning Port Macquarie Surf School where they have lessons daily. All coaches are fully accredited, licensed and insured with Surfing Australia. You will learn surf safety and awareness as well as how to catch a wave. They cater for all ages and abilities from beginners through to advanced. Port Macquarie Surf School is Council approved and a licensed Surfing Australia Surf School. All equipment is provided, including safe softboards, wetsuits and rashvests. They also have hire boards if you know what you're doing and just want to get out there. Jump onto their website portmacquariesurfschool.com.au and book a lesson or board hire today. If you have some questions drop into their booking office at 46 Pacific Drive right opposite Flynns Beach or call them on 6584 7733. If you are looking for calmer waters and a great place to take the little ones, there are couple of options to choose from - all of which require parent supervision. With its rocky outcrop, Shelly Beach creates a somewhat protected lagoon and is ideal for the littlies. Other good areas for kids include Settlement Point, Lake Cathie lagoon (when open to the ocean) and Pilot Beach in Dunbogan. Town Beach is also good with a long break and plenty of rock pools towards the point for the kids to explore. Beach fishing is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Rocky Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach and Grants Beach are all popular spots. If you want somewhere to get your 4WD dirty, try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach – all of which have a 4WD entrance. A licence is required for recreational fishing (service.nsw.gov.au) and you also require a permit to drive on the approved 4WD beaches. Beach driving permits are available from the Visitor Information Centre located at the Glasshouse, Cnr of Clarence & Hay Streets. Map ref K8. 20

PO RT MACQ UARIE Port Macquarie (or "Port" to locals) offers the visitor so many opportunities to share our fabulous lifestyle. Apart from enjoying our relaxed coastal vibe or taking in the breathtaking scenery of our hinterland, there are a myriad of events throughout the year to enjoy. From food, wine and beer festivals, markets, music festivals to major sporting events, there is something for everyone (subject to COVID restrictions of course!). Port can proudly claim that it has become a food-force to be reckoned with, with many restaurants and cafes truly embracing the locavore tenet. From a sublime dining experience at our one-hatted restaurant to a relaxed coffee, juice or smoothie by the beach, Port Macquarie has it all! TOWN GREEN + TOWN SQUARE As the central hub in town, the Town Green + Town Square are popular places to enjoy the waterfront. The area has recently been given a face-lift to enhance the community experience. Sunsets are simply not to be missed from here! Nearby at Town Square, works have also taken shape to provide a more vibrant area with al fresco dining and space to host markets, events and festivals.

SETTLEMENT POINT RESERVE Located just five minutes drive from Port Macquarie Town Centre it is a great spot to take in the Hastings River. Facilities include picnic tables, BBQs, a playground, lots of parking and a nearby cafe. You can even take the short ferry ride over to the North Shore from here. Dolphins are frequently spotted along the shore as they frolic in the shallows of the river. Be sure to look out for them! Map ref H3 TAC K I N G P O I N T Named by Matthew Flinders in July 1802. The lighthouse is the third oldest in the country and has recently been restored. It was built in 1879 to warn ships of the rocks near the shore and was converted to automatic operation in 1919. Apart from the interest of the lighthouse itself, Tacking Point with its elevation above the surrounding coastline offers superb views to both the north and the south – in October and November be sure to look out for whales. Burkhardt' s ORGANIC BAKERY

DISCOVER SUMMER 2020 -21

"An authentic food experience focused on “real” food, sustainable methods and utilising as many purely organic ingredients as possible."

Take a stroll down Short Street in Port Macquarie and you’ll discover a number of ways to indulge in some foodie inspiration. Recently this has become THE speciality food strip where you can find anything from those hard to source Asian ingredients to some of the tastiest bread and desserts that you’ve ever tried. Your curiosity may be drawn to a delicious aroma and a line of people outside one of the shops… these are the locals excitedly waiting to buy the day’s fresh treats from Burkhardt’s Organic Bakery. From first glance, this place has a lot more going on than most people would expect. Behind the doors of this German-inspired Bakery, which has been a local business on the scene for the past 12 years, Michael Burkhardt and his family have spent the last six years creating an authentic Food Experience focused on “real” food, sustainable methods and utilising as many purely Organic ingredients as possible. The term “Organic”, for this German Pastry Chef/ Baker, is definitely more than just a current day marketing term - it’s a way of growing, sourcing and baking on a day-to-day basis. As the local clientele know, just walking by Burkhardt’s Bakery is a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds. So, what better way to celebrate the Christmas season than to indulge in some really special European-style

treats especially created by Michael and his crew! Gingerbread Houses are a must… either as a great gift or as a special surprise for the kids at home. And instead of spending hours baking at home, take the pressure out of the festive season by stocking up on their delectable Christmas puddings, fruit mince pies and Christmas cookies. Continue the theme into the New Year… nothing says celebration more than deliciously irresistible pastries, cakes and artisan breads. But the great assurance too is knowing the care and attention that go into the production and presentation of all the mouth-watering treats on offer. The dedication doesn’t stop there - Michael is also fully committed to sustainable practices and chooses to use an Organically grown flour. He also uses “Salt Of The Earth” hand harvested sea salt and fully filtered, fluoridefree water in all of his products. So the next time you’re wandering down Short Street and notice the boutique food stores that may inspire your cooking, be sure to pop into Burkhardt’s Organic Bakery and taste the difference of what experience and a passion for healthy and sustainable food is like.

Stroll the 2.7km walk that starts at the picnic area and descends through the tranquil rainforest to Rawson Falls. The return trip (uphill) takes about 2 hours at a steady pace. Bring your bird book, as the reserve is very popular for bird watching (best observed during the early hours of the day). Map page 65 ⟶ Miner s B e ach, Por t Macquarie (above)

SEA ACRES R AINFOREST CENTRE Located within the Sea Acres National Park and set amongst rare subtropical rainforest, this NSW National Parks Information Centre offers visitors inspiring nature based and cultural experiences along a 1.3 km elevated wheelchair and stroller friendly boardwalk. Grab a copy of our self guiding tour and meander at your own pace whilst taking in the sounds and beauty of the surrounding rainforest. Immerse yourself in the local aboriginal Birpai story in the Spirit of the Land Exhibit. Sea Acres also offers a beautiful range of unique sustainable gifts, including Aboriginal Art, homewares, educational toys and books. Complete your visit with a delicious lunch, morning or afternoon tea while relaxing on the deck of the Rainforest Café. 5km south of the CBD, or a short diversion from the coastal walk, the centre is 9am to 4.30pm 7 days. For more information please phone the Rainforest Centre on 6582 3355. Map ref P15

Overlooking Queens Lake and Camden Haven, the viewing platforms at the summit offer the most breath-taking views and are a must to visit. There is an easy 30 minute walk through lush rainforest, or try the Top Track which is a moderate 1 hour walk. You can return to the summit or continue on the Laurieton Track, which is a demanding 2 hour walk. Make sure to have a vehicle waiting at the other end. Located only a short drive from Wauchope, Mount Boss State Forest is a favourite to our locals. Cobrabald visitor areas offer two separate camping areas; Wild Bull which has BBQ facilities, picnic shelter and a deep, cool waterhole, and the Bluff Picnic Area further down river which has interesting rock formations, swimming holes and a quiet, secluded spot perfect for small groups or couples. Map page 65

Accessed through Laurieton and across the Dunbogan bridge, the main feature is the majestic Perpendicular Point with its spectacular vertical cliffs plummeting 40 metres to the sea below. The reserve is surrounded by rock platforms, with the Camden River estuary to the north. The Flower Bowl Circuit (2km) is an easy walk with stunning coastal views or try the Perpendicular Point Walk (3.6km return) with panoramic views. Map page 65

Located just 10 kilometres south of Wauchope you will find the world’s largest Red Bloodwood tree! Tourism award-winning ‘Old Bottlebutt’ is unique in shape with its flared ‘butt’ with a girth of more than 16 metres. At 51 metres high and over 200 years old, this magnificent tree is the main feature on a beautiful 600 metre loop walking track that starts and ends at the Burrawan picnic area. From Wauchope travel south on the Bago Road 10 kilometres, then turn left onto Internal Break Road and follow the signs. 24 hours, 7 days including public holidays Map page 65

Heading south through Camden Haven and past the Dunbogan turn off, you’ll find Crowdy Bay’s long sweeping beaches, dramatic headland, extensive wetlands, rainforest pockets and untouched coastal land featuring beautiful wildflower displays. There are three camping areas around Diamond Head and several day use areas along the coast.
