Welcome to Malmesbury
Malmesbury
Independent businesses are the beating heart of Malmesbury. They offer more than mere transactions; they provide personalised experiences that reflect the character and warmth of the town. Whether you drop in for a coffee at the Summer Cafe, buy a bunch of flowers from Persephone Violet or to try on a shirt from Cherry Tree, you will find that each venue has a story to tell, many of which are captured in this guide. These tales enrich the town’s cultural fabric, creating a sense of belonging for residents whilst offering visitors a genuine taste of local life.

Welcome
Environmental sustainability is central to the town’s future development goals and supporting local enterprises is regarded as a cornerstone of responsible consumption. Local businesses will source products from nearby suppliers or buy from trusted sources. They have the commitment to promote eco-friendly practices and care about the future of the town as well as the planet. There are social benefits too. Some businesses, such as Caerbladon and Nimble and Wild also function as community hubs, fostering connections amongst residents and creating a sense of belonging. Others offer advice and support or simply a smile and a chat. They are generous supporters of local events and contribute to the area’s charities.
In essence, Malmesbury and its hinterland has an independent retail and hospitality scene that is the lifeblood of the town. It embodies the spirit of community, sustainability and economic resilience prized by its residents. By choosing to shop and eat locally, residents and visitors alike become active participants in preserving the unique character and enduring prosperity of this historic town.
4
The Guide
The villages and countryside beyond the town add to the richness of the retail, culinary and social offer. Sherston is large enough to be a hub of its own with a variety of shops, eateries and Hortico, an all-too-tempting garden centre. But there are small businesses galore, Brinkworth has an amazing dairy producing prize-winning cheese and your beauty needs can be met in gorgeous surroundings along the Foxley Road or by the entrance to Charlton Park. Why not cycle or walk around the villages and explore what their hidden gems have to offer?

Food & Drink Malmesbury has a vibrant food scene encompassing both eating out and cooking at home. You will be spoilt for choice should you find yourself thirsty in the neighbourhood. Treat yourself to coffee or tea in one of the several quirky cafés, such as Jackdaws in the Town Hall, Lally’s Tea Rooms or at The Summer Café and you will be struck by an overwhelming sense of conviviality. In such a close-knit community, it’s unsurprising that there are unexpected chats with friends and neighbours to be had and groups of people planning events, recovering from Pilates classes, supporting the vulnerable and, yes, knitting together. Part of the pleasure is that in these informal settings you also find out what’s going on in town.

Whatley Manor
The offer extends well beyond the High Street. The Triangle has become an alternative gastro hub. There are more options for coffee; one vegan (The Three Cups), one definitely not (Michael’s Butcher, Bistro and Deli) and one for those with a sweet tooth (The Cosy Cone). In the industrial estate near Dyson there’s another coffee shop in a bike repair shop (Servizio), whilst gardeners can enjoy coffee at the Malmesbury Garden Centre. And there’s coffee in the Abbey, too, for those who like a little history on the side. Outside of Malmesbury there is coffee to be enjoyed in Sherston (The Angel and Courtyard Cafe) and in the Flying Monk Brewery near Norton. When it comes to lunch or dinner another wave of offerings kicks in. There is a fabulous selection of pubs in the surrounding villages to supplement those in town. They offer much more than pub grub, mostly serving seasonal menus using local ingredients and cooked with passion. If it is fine dining you are after, Whatley Manor and the Old Bell are both proud to cook with local produce, including from their own kitchen gardens.
9
Food & Drink Sometimes vegging out at home with a takeaway and a cold beer makes for a perfect evening. Choose from kebabs, pizzas, Chinese or Indian food and, of course, good old fish and chips. For those wishing to cook at home, there is the The Wild Food Company offering organic and sustainably sourced foods, The Old Bakehouse baking bread on site and two brilliant butchers. Michael’s at The Triangle is also a deli and sells Brinkworth Dairy’s award winning cheeses and yoghurts as well as their nationally acclaimed Malmesbury King sausages. Not to be accused of favouritism, the Malmesbury sausages at Leonard Walker at Market Cross are fabulous too: the perfect filling for the Old Bakehouse rolls with lashings of Tracklements’ mustard or their rather wonderful tomato ketchup. Friday is market day at the Market Cross with vegetables, cheese, honey, fish and baked pies and pastries to supplement the fixed offering in town.

Michael’s is a family run butchers, bistro and deli based on The Triangle. Michael Thomas started in the butchery trade as a Saturday boy at the age of just 12. He remembers delivering on an old butcher’s bike in and around Malmesbury, in all weathers. At their Bistro you can enjoy Michael’s famous Butchers breakfast, including their award-winning sausages, a morning cup of coffee or perhaps a freshly made-to-order sandwich with a glass of wine for lunch. Lally’s Tea Rooms If you’re looking for a traditional tea shop experience look no further than Lally’s. As well as delicious tea and cakes, they offer a hearty ploughman’s lunch. This is very much a celebration of local fares: Brinkworth Dairy, Wiltshire Loaf and Avebury cheeses, a gala pie from JGK Butchery and Delicatessen in Royal Wootton Bassett, chutney from Delicious Dauntsey, and bread from The Old Bakehouse in Malmesbury. Lally’s takes its name from a nickname given to the proprietor, Sheila Edwards, by her grandmother when she was a child. The building was originally a seventeenth century town house, with the shop front dating from the late nineteenth century, and is Grade II listed by Historic England.

Cyclists are well catered for, you can buy, repair and and upscale your bike at three different locations. There are few towns with their own saddlery while Sport and Leisure sell more goods than it would seem possible to fit into their amazing little shop, which is one of those independent shops that give the town a good name. Malmesbury has two annual street fairs, Petticoat Lane during Carnival Month in August, and the other is Late Night Shopping in December. Both of these give local creatives like The Stencil Shed a chance to offer their wares and it’s a treat to talk to the person who makes the work. The monthly Saturday craft market in the Town Hall provides another opportunity to meet with local makers.

In the Garden Out comes the sunshine and dries up all the rain and the people of Malmesbury head to the nurseries and garden centres. Our gardens are a natural extension of both our homes and the stunning countryside that surrounds the town. Many residents are climate aware and want to plant flowers that please the bees as much as ourselves and those with larger spaces are increasingly adding a wild section too. There’s a renewed drive to grow food in our gardens, seedlings, young plants and saplings are all readily available. The choice is tempting; it’s impossible to return home without something intriguing that you didn’t know you needed.

Health & Wellbeing
Health & Wellbeing When not drinking coffee or enjoying a pub meal, we should always make time to ensure that we look and feel at our best. Certainly, there’s no excuse to have a hair out of place with women and men having a choice of hairdressers and barbers to choose from. We can arrange to go out into the countryside to have a facial or our nails done for a special occasion in Foxley, on Grange Lane, at the business park at Charlton Park, or in Hankerton. Alternatively, we can stay in town and visit Beauty by Clinta. As well as salons, there are individuals who offer beauty and alternative health treatments from their own homes or who will visit you at home and whose businesses are too small to go in this guide. Do go on personal recommendations but check their qualifications, just to be on the safe side.

Nimble and Wild When it comes to making the best of our bodies, Malmesbury has some great options. Of course there is local authority provision at the Activity Zone with its swimming pool, gym and exercise classes. In addition, there is the gym at PD Fitness where you can spin, circuit train and body blitz to your heart’s content or join a running group or boot camp. If Pilates is more your thing, then Nimble and Wild will put you through your paces either with mat-based classes or on the reformer. Courtyard Clinic is also a good place to go for a chiropractor, a massage or dietary advice. Now based in Charlton Park, The Malmesbury Clinic also has osteopathy, reflexology and specialist massage, amongst other treatments. For alternative medicine, there is Sam the Herbalist, who is also a popular speaker in town on the history of herbal medicine. For a birthday treat or simply an act of pure indulgence, then make a date for a treatment or a luxurious spa day at Whatley Manor Hotel. You can be assured of leaving there with your spirits lifted, feeling rejuvenated and tranquil. In a town of dog lovers, it is not surprising that our four-legged friends have a choice of groomers too, Paramount Paws and The Grooming Room are both on hand to make the pooches look their best.
