World-renowned as a hub for innovation and excellence in both the agriculture and the oil and gas industries, Lloydminster has a trade area of approximately 150,000 people. If you’re looking to make a name for yourself or work with those who have, Lloydminster is the place to be. You will be well connected to resources with Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (CP) railways, Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16) connecting you to Saskatoon, SK, and Edmonton, AB, as well as the Lloydminster Airport for charter flights. Plus, the entire city has lower business taxes and a PST exemption to complement its abundant workforce across several sectors.
We take that title seriously. Lloydminster is the Heavy Oil Capital of the World exemplified by its bi-annual “Heavy Oil Show” convention with visitors from around the world in attendance. Our city is a showcase of the petroleum industry with the Cenovus Energy Oil Refinery within city limits and the Cenovus Energy Heavy Oil Upgrader located within the neighbouring rural municipality of Wilton. You will also find artifacts of this industry across the region, supporting our nation’s energy and economy.
Farming. The other most significant industry out of the Lloydminster area. Fertile soil, a long growing season, and a tireless work ethic has put agriculture on the map. Wheat, barley, and canola are the most typical crops you will see on our landscape, with the bright yellow of the canola flower as a long-anticipated sight each year. Within town, farmers have access to the ADM canola seed crushing facility, one of the many ways our farmers get their crops to your table.

Founded by Barr Colony settlers as a utopia in 1903, Lloydminster was part of the Northwest Territories. Upon the creation of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Lloydminster was divided in two and operated separately until one fateful fire.
The great fire burned for more than 20 hours, destroying dozens of homes and businesses in August of 1929. The Lloydminster we know and love rose from the ashes like a pheonix and amalgamated on May 20, 1930 to become the first and only city in all of Canada to develop as a single entity within two provinces.
Today, Lloydminster is in the heart of Treaty 6 territory that spans across Alberta, touching the British Columbia border, and across Saskatchewan, nearly touching the Manitoba border.
This land is full of a rich and dark history, and although severely threatened (and in some cases, extinguished by colonial forces) Indigenous culture, language, and ways of living continue to expand and thrive despite extreme adversity.
Locally, the land upon which Lloydminster and surrounding settlements now exists is alive with stories. So, whether you’re a history buff, or you’re wanting to pay homage to the land and its peoples, there’s a lot to discover here.
An entire people’s history cannot be summed up in one-page of this guide. Visit ualberta.ca for a free course on Indigenous Canada through the University of Alberta. Did You Know?

Everyone is welcome to attend! For first-timers, here are a few quick tips on how to fully experience a Powwow respectfully.
Start times vary for each event, but make sure you’re not running late.
Listen to the Master of Ceremonies
The Emcee will let you know who’s performing next and provide you with context about each performance including cultural significance and meaning.
Be Respectful
Whether it’s during the opening prayer, a performance, or when trying new food, be mindful that many of these experiences are considered sacred and need to be respected as such.
Respect the Opening Prayer
The Grand Entry and the Opening Prayer signal the beginning of the Powwow. The Opening Prayer is always performed by an Elder, and the drum takes centre stage as the most important part.
Be sure to ask permission before taking a photo as some parts of the ceremony are sacred and private. Additionally, some performers may not wish to have their image captured.
Ask Questions
Powwows are spiritual experiences for those performing. If you don’t fully understand what’s going on, that’s ok just ask respectfully.
Bring Tobacco
Offering tobacco to an Elder or dancer is a sign of tremendous respect in the Indigenous community. It can be offered to them when you ask them to share their knowledge.
Shop & Explore
There are often vendors and artisans present where you can purchase something to commemorate your experience!

Check out the All Seasons Nature Loop — it's a 2.6 km path in Bud Miller All Seasons Park, usually taking 36 minutes to walk and is accessible for bikes too. If that was just your warm up, explore the trails all around the city that are suitable for walking, running, and cycling.
Rover will roll-over with excitement after you take him to one of our two dog parks. The three-acre, off-leash dog park is a grassy, fenced area that is perfect for fetch and getting to know other local dog lovers. Our other dog park is an unfenced space that is ideal for dogs with great recall. Both parks are open year-round, but be sure to bring your wellies (and a towel) in the spring!
