winding and twisting road provides spectacular scenery along its entire route, including the Glencree Valley, Lough Tay (also known as Guinness Lake), Kippure Mountain and Glenmacnass Waterfall. The Wicklow Gap offers spectacular views over the Kings River, the Vale of Glendasan and the upper lake at Glendalough.

Lady’s Island, a pre-Christian settlement and where a monastery was founded by St. Abban in the 6th century.

Take a trip on the Passage East Ferry from Ballyhack or head north to New Ross a bustling town on the banks of the River Barrow. Visit the Dunbrody Famine Ship Experience along the quayside. Enjoy a walk or cycle along the South East Greenway. Explore the ruins of the Cistercian Tintern Abbey or visit the impressive Dunbrody Abbey including its castle grounds and Visitor Centre.

Wicklow Mountains National Park Spanning 220 square kilometres, The Wicklow Mountains National Park has the historic Glendalough monastic site and ‘The Valley of the Two Lakes’ at its centre. The ancient monastic ruins of Glendalough are located at the Lower Lake, whilst the Upper Lake, created in the Ice Age and surrounded by mountains, is an area of outstanding beauty. Further South, the magnificent Glacial Valley of Glenmalure is at the foot of Lugnaquilla Mountain, Wicklow’s highest peak at 927 metres. The wider park is a beautiful area for walking with a selection of signposted trails within the valley. The Wicklow Way, a 130km long self-guided walking trail starting in Dublin and finishing in Carlow, passes through the park. There are stunning scenic drives through both the Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap. The Military Road/Sally Gap reaches a height of just over 520 metres and is one of two east-to-west passes across the Wicklow Mountains. This

nestled between the mountains and the sea. Discover the coastal resort of Greystones and stroll along the golden sands of South Beach. Near the village of Roundwood, lies Ballinastoe Mountain Bike Trail, a network of purpose-built single-track trails and forest roads that are designated for use by mountain bikes. There are spectacular views over Calary Common and the Sugarloaf with the sea to the east and of Lough Tay and the mountains beyond to the west.

West of the mountains there survives a highly scenic natural landscape which contains a wealth of archaeological and historical sites, towns and villages. Blessington Lakes is an area covering 5,000 acres of tranquil clean water and is surrounded by breath-taking scenery. The Blessington Greenway links the historic town of Blessington with the Palladian mansion at Russborough House & Park. South from Blessington lies the town of Baltinglass where you will discover Baltinglass Cistercian Abbey. Other fascinating landmarks include 1798 associations at Kilranelagh Graveyard and Dwyer McAllister Cottage, Piper Stones in Hollywood, Castleruddery Stone Circle, Rathgall Hillfort, Aghowle Medieval Church as well as the villages of Shillelagh, Carnew, Tinahely and Kiltegan.

North Wicklow

Discover the 5km stretch of sandy beach at Brittas Bay. Further south the maritime town of Arklow enjoys wonderful coastal views and is home to Arklow’s Maritime Museum. Inland lies Rathdrum where at Beyond the Trees Avondale, you can venture upwards on the 1.3km treetop walk, discover magnificent trails in Avondale Forest and take a guided walking tour of Charles Stewart Parnell’s birthplace, Avondale House. Drive through the Vale of Avoca and visit the traditional Avoca village, take a stroll along the riverside or head to the ancient Motte Stone and soak up the panoramic views from Cronebane Ridge.

Enniskerry, with its attractive clock tower at its heart, is a scenic village in a lush valley at the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. Visit the magnificent Powerscourt Estate close by. Further north along the coast are the vibrant towns of Bray and Greystones. Enjoy Bray’s seafront with long promenade, hike to the summit of Bray Head and experience incredible views of Wicklow and surrounds or discover the under water world at Marine Life Aquarium Bray. Wicklow Town is an ancient Viking settlement, built on the side of a great promontory overlooking the sea. Visit Wicklow’s Historic Gaol to get a glimpse into life in prisons of the past through its interactive tour. There are beautiful coastal walks along the Murrough Wetlands and the Glen Beach Cliff Walk to Bride’s Head. Take in the spectacular views northwards to the Sugarloaf and Wicklow Mountains, and south along the coast to Wicklow Head, from the 12th century Black Castle ruins at the north end to the town. Follow the Wicklow Town Heritage Trail to uncover the interesting history of the town.
