OAD South of Kenmare lies the wild and rugged Beara Peninsula, a 48km finger of land shared between Cork and Kerry. The 137km Beara Peninsula Drive, also known as The Ring of Beara, snakes its way along the endless coastline from Kenmare to County Cork’s Dursey Island at its tip and up to Glengarriff village in County Cork with colourful places in between to explore. On the Kerry side, visit Gleninchaquin Park in the heart of the Beara Peninsula or stop for a picnic at Kilmakilloge with fine views over the Kenmare River. The Healy Pass is 12km worth of hairpin bends in a rocky terrain, running between Lauragh and Adrigole that enjoys spectacular views and the forest-fringed Glanmore Lake. Part of the Beara-Breifne Way, Ireland’s longest waymarked trail, the Beara Way 206km combines stunning coastal scenery along the Cork and Kerry coastline and rugged mountain landscapes with village life dotted in between.

Na Blascaodaí (The Blasket Islands) lie some 6km beyond the most westerly tip of the Dingle Peninsula. The largest of the nine islands, An Blascaod Mór (which is open to visitors) was finally abandoned in 1953 when the last twenty-two people living on the island were moved to the mainland. No other island N71 community of this size has yielded such literary wealth, producing world-renowned writers who documented island life in their beloved Irish language. There are various boat operators that offer trips to the island.

The Dingle Peninsula
Ceann Sléibhe (Slea Head) is positioned at the westernmost part of the Peninsula. The Slea Head driving route is a 48km circular route beginning and ending in Dingle Town. As the route is narrow and winding, it is recommended that it is travelled in a clockwise direction. Enjoy amazing close-up views of Na Blascaodaí (The Blasket Islands), and distant views of the Na Scealga (Skellig Islands) on the western horizon. Discover the many archaeological and heritage sites along the way.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Skelligs is made up of two sandstone rocks cutting a striking silhouette as they rise steeply out of the churning Atlantic Ocean. Just 12km off Kerry’s Iveragh Peninsula, on a clear day they’re close enough to see from the shore, while at certain times of year you can take a boat out to visit them.

Killarney is the ideal starting point to explore the famous Ring of Kerry, 179km of breathtaking landscapes and fascinating heritage, including Derrynane House where Daniel O’Connell once lived. On your journey take time to look up, for a true wonder awaits when darkness falls. Much of South Kerry is an International Dark Sky Reserve, where you can clearly see the stars glimmering in beautiful constellations by the company of the moon. Take a break from driving and board a boat out to Sceilg Mhichíl (Skellig Michael). This UNESCO World Heritage Site features steep craggy paths, leading to an ancient monastery that offers panoramic views of the crashing sea.

Just off the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry, lie the tranquil Blasket Islands. After many years of hardship and emigration, the last inhabitants of this unique island community finally packed up for the mainland in 1953, leaving behind a way of life full of courage and intrigue. Today, you can discover their story at the Blasket Centre and learn all about this lost community.
