Located 4km south of Clifden, this impressive blanket bog is a stunning mosaic of tiny lakes and peat, where you can stop and view two sites of international historical significance. First, you’ll pass the scattered remnants of the world’s first permanent transatlantic Celia Griffen Memorial radio station, built more than a century ago by Italian Park inventor Guglielmo Marconi and transmitted the first transatlantic radio signal in 1907. Nearby you’ll also come across a white memorial in the shape of an aeroplane wing, which pays tribute to John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown. In 1919, they were the first pilots to fly non-stop across the Atlantic, before crash-landing (safely) in Derrigimlagh Bog.

Following the Wild Atlantic Way south of Galway City will bring you through some charming towns and villages. First up is Oranmore (with the peaceful Rinville Park nearby). Further south, take the coast road from Kilcolgan to the picturesque harbour village of Kinvara, with the imposing Dunguaire Castle on approach.

Connemara is a largely rugged and mountainous region in the northwest of County Galway and is one of Ireland’s most iconic destinations. It is one of the few remaining strongholds of the Irish Gaelic language and its coastline has tiny coves, bays, islands and fishing villages. Connemara can be reached by two main routes. The Wild Atlantic Way coastal route from Galway City takes you through South Connemara, including delightful locations such as Spiddal, Ceantar na nOileán, Roundstone and Derrigimlagh before reaching Clifden (125km from Galway). The N59 is a more direct inland route taking you through Oughterard and Maam Cross before reaching Clifden (77km from Galway).

Climb aboard a boat at Rossaveel and cross the Atlantic waters to the beautifully remote Aran Islands. Bask in the serenity and discover the traditional ways of life, from the musical heritage of Inisheer to the prehistoric stone fort of Dún Aonghasa on Inis Mór. More Iron Age forts can be found on Inishbofin Island, which can be reached by ferry from Cleggan Pier. Known as the City of the Tribes for its rich medieval past, Galway City and Bay is ideal for exploring. The cobblestoned streets are filled with music and culture, with performers of every kind putting on a show for passers-by. Take a stroll past colourful shop fronts, marvel at the history of the iconic Spanish Arch, take a moment to pause at the well-known fountain in Eyre Square at the heart of the city or treat yourself to an icecream beside the sea as you amble down the promenade at Salthill.

With some of Ireland’s most picturesque landscapes, epic beaches, vibrant towns, and lots to see and do, there’s nowhere quite like Galway.

The relaxed seaside area of Salthill is just 1km west of the City Centre. It is home to the famous 2km long Promenade overlooking Galway Bay, with several small beaches separated by rocky outcrops along its length. Salthill has plenty of free parking with numerous attractions, pubs, restaurants and cafés. The Blackrock Diving Tower at the end of the Promenade is easily the most photographed landmark in Galway.

At the heart of Galway City is Eyre Square, from whereGalway the main central Driving Range districts are all within a 10-minute walk. These include the popular East End around Forster Street, the quirky West End across the River Corrib, and nestled in between are the vibrant pedestrianised streets of the Latin Quarter. Talented street performers, colourful shops, pubs, restaurants and cafés bring the city alive throughout the year. The River Corrib and canals offer peaceful walks with numerous landmarks along the way such as Galway City Cathedral, Fisheries Watchtower, the Spanish Arch and Galway City Museum.
