The Cork Gaeltacht Gaeltacht Chorcaí Gougane Barra © David Creedon
Cork has two Gaeltacht areas, where Irish is the primary spoken language and where Ireland’s social, cultural, and linguistic traditions are maintained – Gaeltacht Mhúscraí along the banks of the River Lee, west of Cork City, including the villages of Baile Mhic Íre, Baile Mhúirne, Cill na Martra, Ré na nDoirí and Gougane Barra, and Oileán Chléire, the lovely island of Cape Clear 13km off the coast of West Cork.
