It gives us great pleasure to know that there are so many individuals who put in so much effort to ensure that their monthly contribution is not only relevant and topical, but also that it appears in such a way that you, our readers, will find it useful and, hopefully, entertaining.

Christmas can’t be too far away now, as many of our local pubs and restaurants are giving you details of just what is on offer, and by taking a look at our comprehensive “What’s on” guide, you will be able to see clearly for yourself that 2018 is fast drawing to an end. The “Strictly” season has even arrived to confirm it; the mighty Posh F.C. have made their customary dash up the league table, making us all wonder, could this possibly be the year that they go up?

Comedian Darren Walsh may not have won Edinburgh’s ‘Best Joke of the Fringe’ award this time, but this one did it for me – “I’ve got a new job collecting all the jumpers left in the park at the weekends, but it’s not easy – they keep moving the goalposts.”

Charity Ball Fundraiser for a Rare Illness but there is still a long way to go. S.D.S. is a genetic and inherited condition, affecting the bone marrow, pancreas, bone density and much more. The bone marrow doesn’t produce healthy white blood cells and there is always the possibility that the bone marrow would stop working or turn to leukaemia. Furthermore, the immune system is very weak which makes the patient very vulnerable to life-threatening infections.

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (S.D.S.) is a rare condition which affects the pancreas, bone marrow and skeleton.

Only two hundred or so people have been diagnosed with this condition worldwide, and one of them is Crowland resident, Connor Wright. S.D.S. was named after the two doctors, (Dr Shwachman and Dr Diamond), who first described the condition in the 1960s).

Connor’s nan, Sue Kilby, takes up the story:

Can Cleaning Our Teeth Help Our Joint Pain As We Get Older?

H

ave you ever had an ache and been told by friends and family, “It’s your age, you just have to put up with it”? or “There’s nothing we can do, it’s age-related”? Just this week a patient told me he was ‘just old’, and asked what should he expect at his age? Well, there are some things that just can’t be stopped or reversed, but some aches and pains are unnecessary.

So how do you know the difference?

Usually arthritic pain starts gradually; it is bothersome at the start, but not agonising. It starts when some of the cartilage covering the ends of the bones roughens and becomes thin, then the bone thickens, so the pain is not sudden.

As time goes on, (we’re talking months and years here, not days), the bone at the edges of the joint often thickens to help spread the load. This extra bone forms bumpy bits called spurs or osteophytes. That’s why osteoarthritic joints look a bit fatter than normal.

Of course, as all of this wear and tear happens, it can cause pain, but it also causes a change in the way the joint works, which means the muscles can get tight, and the joints above and below have different strains put on them as our bodies compensate.

So, not only does the arthritic joint hurt, you’ve now also got pain from the changes in the muscles and other joints. These can be helped with treatment and exercise. You’d be amazed at how many patients think their pain is caused by arthritis when it’s only a muscle strain.

One myth that needs busting is that you should avoid doing exercise with an arthritic joint.Evidence suggests that strengthening the muscles that support our joints can be hugely beneficial in reducing the symptoms of arthritis. Arthritis Action actually recommends an exercise programme based on the BBC ‘Trust Me I’m a Doctor’ programme. They tested an exercise routine that people could do at home. One of these exercises was a squat to be performed whilst cleaning your teeth – so yes, cleaning your teeth can help with joint pain as we get older! It can be a little daunting starting a new exercise programme so if you are unsure about any of these then we can help with advice –along with treatment to help ease the muscle strains –which will help keep your body mobile.

So, don’t sit there and blame your age – get the right exercises and treatment, and remember to squat whilst cleaning your teeth!

Start Your Countdown to Look Amazing This Winter

ust as the holiday season comes to a close, we start counting the weeks left before Christmas and the party season. If you are feeling like you would love to get back into a healthy routine and trim some holiday fat off, then this is not always a bad thing. Most of us respond well when we set a goal to achieve something, and so a landmark occasion can be a great motivator.

With twelve weeks until the end of the year, it’s a great time to start your countdown to look amazing this winter! If you could shed an average of just one pound a week, you would be almost a stone lighter by the time you are putting on your party outfit!

WELCOME TO THE WORLD SON ETHAN EXTENDS THE EMPIRE FAMILY

So the time has come to write the next article and there is only one possible thing I can write about the arrival of our beautiful son Ethan.

Ethan Matthew Weston.

Born 2:31am Thursday September 6th, weighing 9 pounds 6 ounces.

I would need the whole of this edition…Every single page and front and back cover, to do justice to the sheer magnitude of feeling and emotion of this occasion.

He is beautiful. Our son. Just beautiful. Such character already at only a few days old. Of course our lives have been turned upside down and never before have I had to write with some semblance of order and coherence on just a breath of sleep. But for obvious reasons the emotions come forth with ease.

Most of all I want to talk about my girlfriend. My partner. And more than ever, my hero…. Ethan’s mum… Tasha.

While the details will remain ours and our families, it was an emotional roller coaster. A wonderful but challenging labour that lasted over twenty-six hours.

We quite literally stood and held each other. A vicetight grip and embrace like no other, forehead to forehead for the final ten hours of those incredible twenty-six.

We have never been closer and we will never forget it. It has woven something new and irremovable through our relationship. A golden thread of love, understanding and respect.

We felt afterwards that we had achieved something really very special. Together.

Every man should speak in poetic terms about the birth of their child, and the bravery and resolve of their partner. And in what I’m about to say, I know

that we are not alone. But to see Tasha roll with the very many intense waves of unique pain that labour brings was awe-inspiring.

It is a pain that exists in the context of the unknown with massive apprehension and nervousness, but of course overwhelmingly amongst the hope, optimism, anticipation and wonderment of meeting your son or daughter, (We didn’t know whether we were having a boy or a girl).

Tasha has always been my hero. But I see Tasha now as an incredibly strong, unbreakable feminine force of nature. A gladiator in her own right. A pillar of resolve.

Nature is referred to as ‘Mother-nature’ for good reason.

The world stands on the shoulders of mothers everywhere.

Now, when I see families in the street, couples with their children, I see them differently. I know they too

Health have their story. And I salute you.

Empire Gym Expands its Expertise into a New and Exciting Arena!

Ethan is the first grandchild on both sides of the family.

And in my mum and dad and Tasha’s mum and dad, Ethan has fallen into the lap of love. Hugs and kisses a million. The worlds’ greatest grandparents.

Then there’s my brother, Uncle Dave! A natural with children and I hope he becomes Ethan’s best friend.

And Tasha’s two sisters Aunties Laura and Trina who are simply besotted with him. In shock at the fact that the family now has a boy! After they grew up as three sisters.

Plans are well underway for a massive and exciting fitness event extravaganza, designed and organised by Empire Gym, to take place at the East of England Showground on Saturday June 29th 2019.

Then there’s the extension of our family. The Empire family.

We have not yet emerged from our nest and I type this from my mum and dad’s house, but the wave of good will, love and support has been remarkable. We are so grateful and can’t move for cards and gifts.

But it’s the kind words that are most valuable. The feeling that people are happy for us. It’s priceless. So thank you.

So, how do I relate this to Empire Gym so that I can justify taking up these column inches. Well I think it relates in every way imaginable.

We have always said our strength is in being a family business. We are more ‘family’ now than we have ever been. More in love with the idea of family than we have ever been, and therefore stronger and more motivated than we have ever been.

Ethan has not only captured our hearts as a family, but he will be a catalyst for the Empire idea for years to come.

Empire is just beginning. Look out for some big news about something we have planned for 2019.

With the ever-growing popularity of tough, challenging fitness and endurance events, catering for hundreds of people, we will be bringing our own, uniquely gruelling, brand to the table. It will involve indoor and outdoor segments, using contemporary, cutting edge training principles alongside traditional, tried and tested, leg-sapping, lung-bursting components, to test even the toughest.

And, of course, we want Peterborough to be the home of the first huge event, before we look to take it nationwide.

Details will remain top secret for now, but expect more on this massively exciting event, and a guide to pricing and booking to be live

by December 2018. This will coincide with the re-design of the Empire Gym website.

How Do You Sleep? Zzzzzzz

H

ave you ever considered the impact of your sleep pattern on your lifestyle? Getting enough sleep is really important, not only for our physical wellbeing but for our mental health too. We all know how we feel when we are sleep-deprived, exhausted, waking regularly. It certainly doesn’t make us want to leap out of bed with joy in the morning when the alarm goes off.

Insomnia can make life incredibly difficult and also exacerbate anxiety and depression if we are already not feeling well. Insomnia is defined as having difficulty staying or getting to sleep long enough to feel refreshed in the morning.

The NHS states “Nearly 1/3 of the population are suffering from insomnia which is affecting their health.” With regular reports on how much sleep on average we should be getting being anywhere between 7-8 hours a night, that doesn’t appear to compliment what actually happens.

Ready for Hallowe’en on October 31st?

- What’s that all about then?

Hallowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows' Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en.

“Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en. It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

QUACKING DAY OUT AT THE DEEPINGS LIONS ANNUAL DUCK RACE Visitors flocked to attend The Deepings Lions Duck Race and Street Fair on Sunday September 2nd in Deeping St James. The weather was perfect for a great day for ‘Duck Watching’.

Swimming against the wind, the ‘highly trained ducks’ made sterling efforts to move at their top speed down the River Welland, navigating pond weed and other obstacles along their way to glory at the finish line. The ducks were helped, if they got stuck, by members of the Welland and Deepings Scouts Canoe Club and Guy Porteous from The Deepings Lions. The canoeists also put on their own race to entertain the crowds, captured the ducks after they finished paddling, and helped return them to dry land.

Races, from 1.30 pm, were all started by Carnival Queen, Emma Baker. There were three short duck races sponsored by local pubs, estate agents and shops, which were won by The Whistle Stop, Beebys and Sam’s Convenience Store respectively.

At 3.00 pm Emma sounded a loud horn which signalled the start of the main race. Over 2,500 ducks entered the water which made a spectacular sight as they emerged from their corral onto open water. The top prize of £100

for the first duck to cross the finish line was won by Mr Gard, the second prize of £50 went to Mr Ding and the third of £25 to Mrs Gage.

As well as the duck and canoe races, there was more to entertain visitors with a range of rides, stalls, and duck toys to buy as well as a good range of food and drink options. The event made well over £2500, to be donated to the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance who came on the day of the event – although not with their helicopter!

This was the twenty-sixth running of the Duck Race. It was first held in 1982 and revived in 2009 after a nine year gap.Dave Coombs of The Deepings Lions, who has been heading the Duck Race organising committee for the past seven years, took over from fellow Club member Roy Markham.

Dave, who recently celebrated his 84th birthday, said, “It’s a lovely event for young and old alike to enjoy. Who would have thought the sight of thousands of ducks gently going down the river can bring so much pleasure?”

Dave also said he would like to thank everyone who helped make the event so successful, including all the visitors, those who sponsored a duck, stall holders,

representatives from LIVES, volunteers from the Raft Race Committee for marshalling duties, and all the event sponsors”.

The ducks have now been washed and dried and have returned to their nests for a wellearned rest. They’ll start their training soon after Christmas to prepare themselves for the 2019 races.

All Aboard “The Wizard’s Express”!

With Hallowe’en on October 31st fast approaching, the shops are full of spider webs and pumpkins. The Nene Valley Railway near Peterborough is already ahead of the game though, and is selling tickets to its steam-hauled “Wizard’s Express”.

Last year, the event was incredible... all the staff get into the spirit, and you can’t move for amazing characters, as the railway transforms into a mysterious place. Those attending ranged from four and five year olds to groups of adults, all out for some scary fun. Rowing Medal Success at the National School Games Following her success with The Peterborough School at the Sainsbury’s Spring School Games, fifteen-year-old Holly Leggott from Market Deeping was selected by British Rowing to compete at the National School Games 2018, representing England South at Indoor Rowing.

The competition was held at Loughborough University from August 30th to September 1st.

Holly had a superb competition.

In the ‘Five Minute Row’, she won her heat and went on to finish

third in the country in a closelyfought final, rowing her best-ever distance of 1313m. She was competing against athletes who regularly participate in rowing events, whereas Holly’s main sport is competitive swimming with Deepings Swimming Club!

She was presented with her Bronze Medal by Olympic rower, Dame Katherine Grainger DBE, (pictured).

National Citizen Service – The Deeping Experience This year, several teenagers from our community joined the National Citizen Service, (N.C.S.) programme. Katie Hand was in one of the Deeping groups that took part, and here she describes what they did and how valuable she thinks it all turned out to be.

“Our group, having spent two weeks first camping and then at Nottingham University,

were tasked with getting the community more active for our ‘social action project’. Through this, we designed walking routes on the ‘GoExplore’ app. and then organised some fundraising, whilst working with local groups and shops.

Much to our delight we were able to raise £150.08. This was from our stalls outside the Coop and a family sports day, which provided us with more than enough to pay for a tester walk with some of our target groups on the last day of our project. With £102.92 left over, we decided to donate it to the Friends of Jubilee Park, who are planning and funding to install a trim trail. Their project meant a lot to us, as they were trying to provide more activities for us young people, and also we believed it would encourage

people to get active and outside in the open air.

We were amazed by the community’s support, especially from the Market Deeping Town Council and Deeping Parish Council, along with local shops and the media - we really can’t express our gratitude enough.

The Rotary Club of the Deepings has kindly donated a bench, sited on the riverside in Deeping Gate, in memory of Rotarian Tony Martin. It overlooks the river from next to the village sign.

Great achievements for Citizens Advice in the area On September 11th, Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire held its Annual Review and AGM in Spalding, during which the Chief Executive Lisa Barwell was able to highlight many achievements over the year, despite a cut in core funding, under her general theme of “Doing more with less.” Highlights included an increase in the number of new clients seen, up to 11859, and an increase in the number of issues dealt with, to 16452. The difference in those two figures reflects the complexity of some of the cases assisted.

Tony, a passionate Rotarian, always there to help and offer advice, was a member of the Club for many years and served as President 1991 – 1992 and as District Governor 2007 – 2008. We will all miss his Rotary knowledge and his Yorkshire spirit.

Tony had lived in Deeping Gate since 1974.

In addition, 2116 clients were helped at the first point of contact, where they were given sufficient information to allow them to take forward their issue themselves - a feature of the current work in Citizens Advice.

Specialist advisors in welfare benefits helped some of the most vulnerable members of the community to claim £2m in entitlement, much of which would have gone unclaimed without their help, and much of which will be spent in the local community. In addition, specialists in money advice rescheduled £5m of debt, allowing individuals and families to move forward with their lives.

The value of volunteering leapt over the year, by 34%, as a result of a co-ordinated effort on recruitment and training, and those volunteers were quickly able to contribute to the increased numbers of clients helped, the current numbers of volunteers in the organisation, over the three main offices and six outreach locations is 137 – an amazing number, whose efforts and loyalty were warmly appreciated

by Lisa.

Smiling Simon’s Seaside Hunt Success Congratulations go to young Simon Genovese, aged 6, proudly clutching his wad of cash as his reward for having been the lucky winner of our August, Seaside Treasure Hunt competition. This year’s proved to be our most popular yet, with scores of youngsters dragging parents and grandparents round the various shops and businesses, in search of the clues.

OCTOBER Gardening Tips Remember that the clocks go back at the end of this month, so make as much use as possible of daylight hours before winter sets in. This month sees jobs that are mainly clearing the plot ready for the winter months, plenty of digging and manuring. Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts, and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better, as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans and brassicas, so that they decompose more quickly. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it.

Once the plot has been dug over, manure or fertilise it, and then cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter, as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. There is no need to dig in the manure as it will get drawn down into the soil over the winter months. An alternative to covering the soil is to plant green manures that will overwinter and can be dug in in the spring.

October is perfect for dividing large oversized crowns of rhubarb and also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees.

Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil.

Crops that can be sown this month are:• early broad beans.

• rhubarb crowns.

• Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring.

• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages –be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

• Plant garlic if you haven’t already done so.

• Broad beans –early varieties should overwinter.

Other jobs for this month include:• Continue to earth up celery and leeks.

• Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd.

• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.

• Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas –leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould.

• If you haven’t already done so, earth up or stake, (or both), Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.

• Pick all of the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana –this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

• Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer.

• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.

Banks are Cashing in on Grief

A recent report from the Daily Mail shows that grieving families face paying thousands of pounds to banks because their loved ones were sold rip-off wills.

Up to 1.5 million customers are believed to have signed up for the service in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Wills were typically offered for as little as £75, or even for free.

However, as a condition of the low cost, the banks appointed themselves as executor – and can grab up to 2.5% from an estate in legal fees. The inheritors of £500,000 of wealth risk paying out £12,500 – around five times the typical cost of £2,500.

It is thought that high street banks can expect a combined £9 billion windfall from will-writing services.

‘Families are in for a huge shock when their loved one dies and they face having to hand a bank eyewatering amounts from their inheritance,’ said James Daley of the consumer website, Fairer Finance.

‘These small percentages may seem reasonable at the time, but they can add up to tens of thousands of pounds on a customer’s death.’

An estimated 1.5million wills have been written by banks over the past twenty years. Banks offered the will-writing service as a perk for signing up for insurance or fee-charging current accounts.

Customers would typically be visited at home by bank staff or lawyers who would record their wishes.When customers signed up for wills with banks, they may not have understood the consequences of assigning executorship, and the percentage charge may have appeared modest. However, house prices, which have soared 23% in a decade, mean even the estates of those on modest incomes can attract hefty fees.

School News Baston C. of E. Primary School We’ve had a great start back to school; our Reception children have settled in nicely and are already used to the daily routines that we have in place. Our theme for our Collective Worships this term is ‘Generosity’, and we are exploring ways in which we can show this value and how Bible stories show how Jesus displayed this too.

Our first trip of the year has been to Willow Tree Fen to start our science topic on habitats and evolution.

We thoroughly enjoy our days at this amazing site and the activities that are arranged for us to learn. Whilst river dipping, we found newts, water boatmen and pond skaters.

William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School William Hildyard Church of England Primary and Nursery School took part in a day dedicated to Disability Awareness. On this day, children explored a variety of activities and learning opportunities.

These included ‘Forest School Blindfolded Sensory Trails’; exploration and discovery tasks, (where children had to create a park that was accessible to all abilities); creative learning, looking at Matisse and artwork showing disability; and activities in which they experienced life with disability.

The children summed up their day: “This was our ‘Disability Awareness Day’ - but we are now on a journey where we make every day ‘Disability Awareness Day’, by thinking of others, appreciating everyone is different and unique, and not judging others by their ability to do things.”

This was indeed a very special day in school.

The William Hildyard new starters enjoyed spending time in the sunshine with their new friends and teachers at the Pre-School Teddy Bears Picnic, which was held in Canon Brent’s Rectory Garden.

Ingredients 50g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 carrots, chopped 700g mixed game meat (partridge, pigeon, pheasant, rabbit and hare all work well), deboned and cut into 3cm pieces 300g pack venison sausages (about 6 sausages), removed from their skins 2 tbsp plain flour 1 tbsp tomato purée 150ml red wine 500ml chicken or beef stock 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 bay leaf 4 tsp thyme leaf, chopped 400g potato, cut into chunks 600g mixed root vegetables (use parsnips, celeriac, swede or turnips), cut into chunks 2 tbsp milk

Method • Heat half the butter and the oil in a large pan, add the onion and carrots, and cook for about 10 mins until soft. Add the game and sausagemeat to the pan. Turn up the heat, squash the meat with the back of your spoon to break it up, and cook for 10 mins until nicely browned.

• Stir the flour and tomato purée into the meat, cook for 1 min, then add the wine, stock, sauce, bay and 3 tsp thyme. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat, cover with a lid and cook for 1 hr. Remove the lid and cook for 15 mins more until the meat is tender and the sauce has thickened.

• Put the potatoes and veg in a large pan, cover with water, bring to the boil and cook for 20 mins until really tender. Drain, leave to steam for 5 mins, then mash with seasoning, milk and the remaining butter.

• Heat oven to 220˚C/200˚C fan/gas 7. Tip the meat into an ovenproof dish and spoon on the mash.

Sprinkle with the remaining thyme and bake for 45 mins until the top is golden and the sauce bubbling.

Preparing the Elderly for the Winter As we get older, our bodies respond differently to the cold which can leave us more susceptible to serious health problems. But with a little preparation, and by following some simple suggestions, you can stay healthy this winter.

Cold temperatures can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of flu and other lung-related problems. Our blood pressure takes longer to return to normal, and this can put you at greater risk of a heart attack or stroke. That’s why it’s so important to look after yourself in the winter.

Keep moving. Look for ways to keep active - get up and walk around, make yourself a warm drink and spread any chores throughout the day.

Eat and drink well. Eat at least one hot meal each day and have hot drinks throughout the day. Include a good range of foods in your diet and aim for five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Keep basic food items in the cupboard or freezer in case it’s too cold to go shopping.

Have a flu jab every year. The flu is not only unpleasant, it can also develop into something more serious, such as pneumonia. You can get a free flu jab from your GP and some pharmacies if: you’re 65 or over; you receive Carer’s Allowance, or you are the carer of a person whose welfare will be affected if you become unwell; you have a long-term health condition – such as diabetes, a heart condition, asthma or lung disease, a kidney or liver problem, Parkinson’s, or if you have had a stroke; you are living in a long-stay residential care home.

Check you’ve had the ‘pneumo’ jab. The ‘pneumo’ (or pneumococcal) jab is a one-off jab that helps protect you against pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia (a type of blood poisoning). If you’re over 65 and haven’t had one, ask your GP.

Keep your hands clean. Good hand hygiene is the simplest way to avoid getting colds or flu and stop it spreading to other people. Wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water, or use alcohol-based gel or wipes. Make sure to clean surfaces you are in contact with regularly, like your telephone, door handles and keyboard as germs can live on them.

Protect yourself from chilblains. Chilblains are itchy red swellings that occur when your skin gets cold and you try to warm up too quickly, often by sitting close to a radiator or other heating, so keeping warm can help prevent them. If you experience these, dab the swellings with calamine or witch hazel to reduce itching, but don’t scratch them as this could cause an infection.

Discovering . . . Riverside walks

S

unday afternoon walks were particularly popular in past centuries, a family ritual during Victorian times when parents and children stepped out to enjoy a welcome interlude of relaxed exercise between a heavy lunch and attendance at evensong at a time when our churches attracted far bigger congregations than they do today.

Robert Lambert accidentally fell into the water and drowned, thus raising fears about the safety of the footpath. A local newspaper subsequently reported: “As further proof of the necessity for an immediate improvement in this locality, it is said that one man who has resided near the river there for many years has rescued eleven persons who have fallen in.�

Villages with a waterway were especially blessed because they provided a route as well as attractive scenery such as we have along the entire length of the River Welland which flows through the Deepings, a magnet for these family outings with everyone dressed up in their Sunday best and ready to meet the neighbours and pause for a gossip.

Conditions are now much better, the footpath having been greatly improved over the years and is now quite safe, becoming one of the most pleasant walks in the district, especially on a sunny summer’s day, taking in a mix of properties with differing architectural styles and a wealth of stone houses dating back to the 18th century, a set of locks and a quaint crossing sign erected by villagers to safeguard ducks from passing traffic, and, of course, the river itself to provide a constantly changing backdrop of boats, swans and optimistic anglers.

In Deeping St James, the river runs alongside the main street and both banks are accessible for much of its length with a pavement running parallel to the road on the west side and a towpath or footpath to the east.

There are crossings at each end, the historic pack horse bridge to the east and the footbridge over the high locks upstream, to enable walkers enjoy a circular scenic route for their relaxing constitutional.

However, it has not always been a secure place for walkers because danger lurked for the unwary, especially if they had spent the evening drinking in one of the village public houses, and in the spring of 1875, John 50

Such scenes captured by photographers in past times are of an England long gone and although Sunday afternoon walks no longer attract the support they once did, the landscape remains virtually unchanged, a reminder of the Deepings of yesteryear when leisure pursuits were much simpler than they are today and probably far more enjoyable.

Don’t Fear the Vet!

M

any of us have a fear of the dentist and our pets may feel the same about a visit to the vet. Our dogs and cats are emotional creatures and most of the “bad” behaviours we see are due to an emotional response, such as fear or excitement. Owners coming to the veterinary surgery can also feel quite nervous as they may be worried about the outcome of a consultation, and this can transmit to their pet and influence them.

Individual pets will react differently to the situation they find themselves in, and often react in ways that are surprising to their owner.

Recognising this and preparing for it is something we can all respond to and so improve the welfare of our pets.

Most dog owners know that their dog behaves differently when on a lead and when not. When greeting other dogs off the lead, they are

much more relaxed and confident.

On the lead they often lunge and bark at other dogs. In a waiting room this is intensified in a smaller area and can become very stressful for them. They may be better waiting in their own space outside, or in the car, until the appointment is called.

However, some dogs are very relaxed and happy, and their body language can help other dogs to relax too.

Cats try to escape from stressful situations and hide. Covering a cat basket with a towel will provide a dark, quieter zone. Cats in hospital wards are always given a box to hide in so they feel more secure. If it is particularly noisy in the waiting room, removing a cat to a separate zone will reduce stress.

Pheromone products can calm animals and using a pheromone collar on dogs or spraying a small

rag of pheromone and attaching it to a cat’s cage will be useful. Again, we use this on cats in wards to make them feel safe and secure. Often, there are separate cat clinics for those not used to noisy dogs, and these have proved very useful at reducing anxiety in cats.

Of course, there are a variety of medications that can be used to reduce stress and anxiety, but they must be used with care or they can make the situation worse for some pets, so it is certainly worth discussing these with your vet.

It has to be said, that most animals enjoy their visit to the vet. This is usually because their initial visits as puppies and kittens have been fun.

They get lots of fuss and attention and often get a reward too, and if we make the experience positive at this early stage, then hopefully, it will be positive at all their future visits.

Hallowe’en, Bonfire Night and The Law

H

allowe’en is great fun for youngsters, getting dressed up and going ‘trick or treating’ and the like. However, not everyone finds it quite that exciting, and there will be people, for example, the elderly, who do not wish to be disturbed or can in fact find the whole thing quite frightening. As a general rule of thumb, those with decorations outside their house, it is fine to call in. If not, then it is best to leave them alone. For those people who do choose to go ‘trick or treating’, please do so responsibly; pranks like throwing eggs and flour could be deemed criminal damage and may result in you being arrested. Some shops won’t even sell eggs and flour to under-16s in the run up to the day. If you’re worried at all about Hallowe’en, then you can pop into the police station and get a poster that you can display, asking people not to ‘trick or treat’ at your house.

It is also approaching the time for Bonfire Night. This can be a wonderful time to watch some fireworks and enjoy a toasty bonfire, but make sure to do it safely. Children should never be allowed to handle or set off fireworks, and should be closely supervised when using sparklers etc. You can only buy fireworks, (including sparklers), from registered sellers for private use on these dates: ● October 15th - November 10th. ● December 26th - 31st. ● Three days before Diwali and Chinese New Year.

At other times you can only buy fireworks from licensed shops.

The law says you must not set off or throw fireworks, (including sparklers), in the street or other public places.

You must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except for:

● Bonfire Night, when the cut-off is midnight. ● New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut-off is 1am.

You can be fined up to £5,000 and imprisoned for up to six months for selling or using fireworks illegally. You could also get an on-the-spot fine of £90.
