As we bowl headlong into the second half of the year, we are now in the month of school sports days and “proms”, signifying a conclusion to another school year and the start of that longed-for summer holiday. It is so pleasing to see how many people are now realising that there are opportunities to put on events and attractions in our towns and villages to keep everyone involved and have “fun in the sun”. An excellent case in point is how the Elsea Park Community Trust in Bourne will be hosting a three-week long “Urban Beach” next month with free activities galore.
I was amused to discover that July 7th is “World Chocolate Day”, celebrating the joy of that heavenly product, and then, eight days later, we have “National Give Something Away Day” which is designed to promote generosity and sharing - yes, but we’ll have already eaten it all on July 7th!
Walking into town the other day I saw a man cutting an overgrown hedge with a very small set of garden shears.
It was on one of our rare recent hot days, so I felt quite sorry for him as from experience I know what a thankless chore that can be.
For at my previous home, I had two hedges that I had to regularly keep trim but, in my case, I had a secret weapon… my dad who had some electric hedge cutters.
The problem was that if he came round to help me, he had to be in control of said the trimmer. My role was very much that of the junior partner, meaning that I was tasked with clearing up the mess he made, including retrieving assorted pieces of rubbish that had either been blown in or stuffed into said hedges. As both hedges were quite thick, I also often had to bury my head inside to collect fallen clippings which often resulted in assorted insects falling onto my head and inside my shirt collar. It was a hot, sticky job, but someone had to do it, and in those days that always meant me…

In celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s one hundredth year, Leicestershire’s famous annual Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of a Mountain Gorilla, which he famously filmed in Rwanda in 1978 for the iconic BBC series, “Life on Earth”.
The giant eight-acre maize maze has a fun Quiz Trail hidden amongst three miles of pathways, with high-level bridges and towers giving stunning panoramic views.
Visitors are challenged to find twelve quiz boards, featuring animals from his pioneering nature series, as well as interesting facts about this famous naturalist and broadcaster. They can also take part in a variety of mini mazes and games in the ‘Activity Funyard’, which includes a space-hopper track, hoopla, beanbag throwing and a football shooting game.

Did you know, ‘Handfasting Marriage,’ or a hand-tying ceremony, is an ancient Celtic tradition where a couple’s hands are bound together with cords or ribbons to symbolise their union and commitment. Often performed during modern humanist or spiritual weddings, this ritual is the origin of the phrase ‘Tying the Knot.’
MONTHLY MEETINGS
Due to being unable to use the event room in Wisbech Library, we had to find an alternative meeting place. Please note we now hold our monthly evening meetings at Wisbech St Mary Sports & Community Centre, Beechings Close, Wisbech St Mary PE13 4SS. We have been made very welcome, with coffee, tea etc available at the bar. The room is comfortable, with some mentioning the excellent chairs, and it holds all the facilities we required. Our meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month except DECEMBER & AUGUST at 7pm-9pm. Non-members always welcome. Our guest speakers give varied and interesting talks. In May Diane CALTON SMITH gave a talk entitled ‘Time Travel through Medieval Fenland, Charter to Charter’ and on June 25th the speaker was due to
be Nick MEEKINS on ‘Wisbech Crime & Punishment’.
Our July meeting is always a trip out to a place of interest. This year on July 23rd we will meet at the Old Church at Church End, Parson Drove. The church was closed for services and is now used for various community events. Please meet at the church door.

Abrowser extension is a piece of software that adds features to your web browser or to the programs you use in your browser. Each extension tends to focus on one single function, for example, allowing you to print a PDF file of a web page directly from your browser, blocking adverts, checking grammar and saving passwords.
While most legitimate browser extensions don’t pose a risk and are in fact incredibly useful, there are security and privacy concerns associated with many not quite so trustworthy extensions that are available to install on the internet.

• Some extensions get you to grant them excessive permissions by asking to ‘read and change all your data on the websites you visit.’ This allows them to capture login sessions, alter search results as well as access tabs, browsing history and sensitive information.
Since a browser extension runs inside the browser, it can gain access to the web pages you visit and therefore potentially collect sensitive information. If the extension is badly designed, overly intrusive or deliberately malicious, it can compromise the security of your PC:
• Browser extensions often come bundled with other software which, if you fail to pay attention to the fine print on the installation wizard, install themselves onto your system. Once installed, they can modify your browser settings, change your default search engine, and redirect your searches through their own
• Many toolbars inject advertisements into websites you visit, track every search query you make, and sell this information to third parties. Some even create security vulnerabilities that can be exploited.
• Even legitimate-looking tools can later become dangerous if the developer account is compromised or if the extension is sold and updated with harmful code. Good reviews or an official store listing do not necessarily make an extension safe.
Treating browser extensions with the same caution as any other
software is the best way to keep your information safe. Avoid extensions that ask for far more access than their purpose would actually need. For example, a coupon finder, wallpaper tool or calculator absolutely do not need permission to read all browsing data on every site.
‘Free VPN,’ ‘PDF converter,’ ‘video downloader’ and ‘AI assistant’ extensions from unknown publishers should also be avoided.
The safest approach is to install as few extensions as possible and only download them from official stores for browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and MS Edge.
In summary, the advice to adhere to is:
• Only install the extensions you genuinely need and remove any you no longer need or use.
• Check what permissions an extension is asking for before adding it.
• Avoid extensions from unknown publishers or those with vague privacy policies.
• Be cautious with free VPNs, downloaders, converters and search helpers.
• Read recent reviews and look for signs of poor maintenance.
• Keep your browser and all extensions up to date.
• Do not assume an official store listing means an extension is safe.

The New Market Place
Wisbech... Georgian market town and Capital of the Fens. Is this true?
Capital of the Fens? Yes, some people mention Spalding and some even mention Boston, but Wisbech is mostly talked about as the Capital of the Fens. Georgian town? We have many beautiful Georgian houses including the two brinks and the Crescent.
Is it a market town? Yes, but… to start with, in the olden days, two rivers merged at Wisbech, the Nene and the Ouse, and apart from a few dirt tracks, the only way to get about was on the rivers and this is why there was a castle built at Wisbech. is was to defend the town but also to control the trade.
e rst market in Wisbech was to the north of the River Nene but it wasn’t long before there was a bigger one to the south of the river and by the 12th century the market to the north became known as ‘ e Old Market.’
Gradually, around the marketplace to the south of the river shops sprung up and by the 1850s we have a pretty good record of what they were like. Mostly they were for the basic essential things of life, such as a grocer, a butcher, a baker, a tailor and an ironmonger.
is continued for a long time and the stalls in the market re ected this with people from the outlying villages at the beginning of the last century catching a bus into town to do their shopping.
In the 1930s there were one-and-half-million cars owned in the country, so most people had to settle for the bus or train to come into town. But in the 1980s, fty years later, we start to see a change with more than thirteen-and-ahalf million cars on the road.
Both Tesco and Woolworths came to the marketplace. Tesco was where the QD store is now and Woolworths was where Poundland is. Both stores together could supply most people’s needs.
But in 1988 we see a bigger change with the construction of the Horsefair, a shopping centre including a Co-op superstore with, importantly, a multi-storey car park next to
it. People were now starting to own cars and become more mobile which would lead eventually to the convenience of out-oftown shopping. Tesco realised they could do more business if they moved from the marketplace so in the 1990s, they built a new store on Cromwell Road with easy access and car parking.
Across the road, in 2008 Lidl set up their store. e Tesco store did so well that in 2014 the company invested £50 million in a gigantic store just up the road with parking under the store so that even if it’s raining customers wouldn’t get wet.
e old Tesco was then pulled down and a large out-oftown retail park was built. One year later next door another out of town shopping centre was built making Cromwell Road the main and biggest out-of-town shopping centre for Wisbech.
And of course, the fast-food suppliers couldn’t miss out on the chance to cash in; McDonald’s, KFC, Costa Co ee and Starbucks are all doing well.
ere are smaller out-of-town shopping centres on Elm High Road and Lynn Road, but they can’t compete with Cromwell Road.
Wisbech is well blessed with superstores now. We have Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Aldi and Lidl. All of which you can park safely at with your car. And as well as this there are numerous food stores, including foreign food stores.
At Cromwell Road out-of-town shopping centre you can get many, many things and as well as food you can get products for the home, garage, furniture, electrical products, bathrooms, kitchens, DIY and you can even get your car cleaned and serviced.
With car ownership at around thirty-four million out-of-town shopping at Cromwell Road really is now THE NEW MARKET PLACE…

Accounting Rule Changes: Accounts, Lending & Company Valuations

Changes to accounting rules probably aren’t your top priority, but this one might be worth a closer look. Although an update to FRS 102, the standard used by most UK small and medium-sized businesses may sound technical, the changes could have unexpected consequences.
What Is Changing?
One key update relates to operating leases, such as leased vehicles, equipment and even premises. Previously, these were treated simply as rental expenses in the profit and loss account.
Under the new rules, most leases will be recognised on the balance sheet as a “right-of-use” asset, alongside a corresponding lease liability. This increases both assets and liabilities. In the profit and loss account, rental costs will be replaced by depreciation of the asset and interest on the liability—both of which sit below EBITDA. As a result, EBITDA is likely to increase, even though the cash payments remain unchanged.
Why Does This Matter?
A key measure used by lenders and buyers is EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation). It is commonly used to assess performance and calculate the value of a business.
Impact on Lending
Banks often include financial covenants in loan agreements that are based on EBITDA. For example, they may require EBITDA to cover interest by a certain multiple or limit how much debt a business can hold relative to its EBITDA.
While EBITDA may increase under the new rules, reported debt will likely rise due to lease liabilities being recognised. Depending on your specific covenants, this could put pressure on existing loan agreements and, in some cases, risk a breach if not addressed early.
Impact on Valuations
If you are planning to sell your business, buyers may still focus on “adjusted EBITDA.” However, they are likely to make further adjustments to assess the underlying performance of the business and determine an appropriate valuation.
Other Changes
The updated rules also introduce enhanced disclosure requirements, particularly for tax, related party transactions, and dividends. While this improves transparency for lenders and investors, it also means that companies will need to provide more detailed information than before. As a result, there may be a reduction in financial privacy, with greater public visibility over transactions, relationships, and profit distributions.
What Should You Do?
The key is to be prepared. Understanding the impact early allows you to avoid surprises and present your business clearly to lenders or buyers. HELP SAFEGUARD LIONS’ FUTURE

Wisbech Lions Club has been active in the town since it was chartered in November 1972. That is fifty-four years of service to our local community.
Sadly, we are struggling to rejuvenate the club due to a shortage of active members and we desperately need help from community minded people to help us continue giving service. At present, members pay £20 per half year subscriptions and this is used towards admin so that all funds collected at our events can go direct to local worthy causes. We consider this is a small amount for members which enables us to continue to give public service.
Over the years, Wisbech Lions Club have helped many local groups and individuals. We have donated funds to youth groups, scouts and guides, and have been into many of our local junior schools with the Lions International Peace Poster Competition.
We have also helped with food banks, Feed Fenland and our local Alan Hudson Unit which is part of the Arthur Rank Hospice. We have recently also helped Wisbech Art Club, Wisbech Fenland Museum, Wisbech Stroke Club, two local coffee morning groups, part funding of a defibrillator and Girls’ Venture Corps Cadets.
We also collect spectacles with our boxes in opticians and chemists. These are for recycling and proceeds from this go towards eye surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London
and also in a new Lions International Eye Centre which is located at Korle Bu in Ghana, where there is a great need.
We also give out free M.I.A.B.s (message in a bottle). This is a small plastic bottle which assists the Emergency Services as they contain vital information of the medication of patients (extremely helpful for people living alone). Ambulance, Police and Fire Services are all aware of this and it has proved very helpful over the years.
We also, of course, have our Santa Sleigh, but unfortunately last Christmas we were only able to do statics as we do not have enough members for street collections now. This is where we need volunteers to step up and join us, hopefully as Lions Club members, but we also have a group for Friends of Lions who
can assist at events and we are always most grateful for their help. We just need more people to keep going.
But we also make time to enjoy ourselves and sometimes arrange a meal or a quiz and get together socially. We welcome new members of both these groups, both male and female.
Our global causes include youth, hunger, childhood cancer, diabetes, disaster relief, vision, environment, and humanitarian efforts and our motto is ‘We Serve.’

Wisbech & District Stroke Club
We are a club for stroke survivors and their carers. We meet twice monthly on the second and last Friday of each month at the Tesco Community Room Cromwell Road at 2pm.
Members enjoy chatting with other Stroke Survivors, Guest Speakers. Trips to the theatre and places of interest to get them rehabilitated back into the community. At the last meeting of the month we are joined by a qualified specialist keep fit instructor to get survivors moving again. We are a friendly bunch; why not come and join us?
