Those longed-for sunny days and warm evenings could at last be here, so let the outdoor fun and games begin! It seems only weeks since the garden furniture and barbecue were safely stashed away for winter, and now, here we are … ready and willing to brave whatever the elements decide to throw our way. As I write, a torrential storm has just been followed within minutes by the sun. Oh, to be in England now that summer’s (nearly) here! Here’s hoping we may all have a super al fresco month!

England will once again be performing on centre stage at the contest which will feature matches played in sixteen cities across Mexico, the USA and Canada.
No doubt England fans will be in for the normal rollercoaster of emotions, from high optimism to utter dejection, but at least it should bring people together for the next few weeks.

ata loss isn’t a matter of if — It’s a matter of when. Therefore, having an uberefficient backup plan will save lot of stress (and money) should the worst happen and you lose access to your data.
Data loss (or the inability to access your data) can happen for many reasons:
• When copying data from an old device to a new one
• Your device is lost, stolen or breaks
• The data on your device is accidentally deleted (or becomes unreadable)
• A virus or malware erases your data or prevents you from accessing it
• Your hard drive fails. Sadly, nothing lasts forever. SSDs have a limited number of write cycles and while most last for many years, their performance can degrade as they age. Older HDDs are prone to mechanical failure due to their moveable parts
• When backing up your data, we suggest following the 3-2-1 backup rule (remember Ted Rogers’ old TV programme?):
• 3 copies of your data - the original data plus at least two backup copies
• 2 different storage types – 2 x removable media or removable media and cloud storage
• 1 offsite copy – at least one backup stored in a separate physical location
Cloud storage is where a back-up of your data is stored on the internet. Some cloud services offer a certain amount of cloud storage space for free, and some provide version history, allowing you to restore previous versions of a file if something goes wrong. Cloud storage also allows you to automatically create backups, meaning you’ll always have an up-to-date copy of your data.
Cloud storage does, however, require a reliable internet connection to back up (and restore) your data, so it may not be a suitable option if your internet connection is slow/unreliable or if you’re creating particularly large backups. Do make sure you protect your account using strong passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA).
Removable media is, for example, an external hard drive, USB stick, SD card, DVD or CD-R disks (although many modern PCs no longer have DVD drives). Backing up using removable media allows you to backup larger amounts of data than cloud storage.
Once your data has been backed up to the removable media of your choice, it’s important that you disconnect it. Viruses, malware and ransomware can automatically move to attached media, meaning any backup will also be infected.
When backing up to removable media, you should set a reminder to do on a regular basis (if your backup program doesn’t allow you to schedule automatic backups). In addition, if you can, protect your backup with a password in case the removable media is lost or stolen.
Remember, a single backup stored on your computer or an external hard drive is not enough. If your device gets lost, damaged, or compromised by malware, all your data could disappear in an instant. Following the 3-2-1 rule provides multiple layers of protection and keeps your data secure no matter what happens.

For many families and business owners in the Fens, Inheritance Tax could often be managed with careful planning. However, significant reforms introduced from April 2026 have changed the landscape, particularly for those who own agricultural land or run family businesses. If you haven’t yet reviewed your position, now is the time to act.
The reforms centre upon agricultural property relief (APR) and business property relief (BPR), two long-standing reliefs which historically allowed qualifying assets to pass on death, free of Inheritance Tax.
From April 2026, the full 100% relief is now capped at a combined allowance of £2.5 million per individual. Any qualifying agricultural or business property above that threshold will attract 50% relief rather than 100%, meaning Inheritance Tax becomes payable at an effective rate of 20% on the excess. Importantly, any unused portion of the allowance is now transferable between spouses and civil partners, so a married couple can together shelter up to £5 million of qualifying assets at the full rate. For farming families, where land values can be considerable, estates above those thresholds that would’ve passed to the next generation free of Inheritance Tax may now face a significant liability.
Primarily, review your current estate plan. If your Will was drafted on the assumption that APR or BPR would shelter the full value of your farm or business, it may no longer be suitable. Consider
meeting with your accountant and solicitor to look at the overall picture, including the value of your assets, how they’re owned, and whether any lifetime planning, such as gifting or the use of trusts, could help to reduce the eventual tax bill. Review your life insurance arrangements; these can be a practical way to ensure your family has the funds to meet a tax liability without being forced to sell land or assets. Where Inheritance Tax does become payable on qualifying agricultural or business property, it can be paid in interest-free instalments over ten years, which can ease the immediate cash flow pressure on a farm or family business.
These conversations are not always easy, but they are important. Succession planning works best when the whole family understands the position and is involved in the decisions.

Over the last year, BLHRT volunteers have worked very hard to clear the remaining UP line track between Waldersea and Coldham, along with the station house and signal box areas just north of the Station Road crossing at Coldham. We have also been working on clearing the full trackbed width back to the boundaries, ensuring there is a clear distance at the side of the line to walk along. We also got through to the old Coldham toilet block.
Our usual workdays are the first and third Saturdays of each month, starting 9am at Waldersea Yard. We usually finish between 2pm and 3pm, depending on the work and the weather. Wisbech & District Stroke Club
We are a club for stroke survivors and their carers. We meet twice monthly on the second and last Friday of each month at the Tesco Community Room Cromwell Road at 2pm.
Members enjoy chatting with other Stroke Survivors, Guest Speakers. Trips to the theatre and places of interest to get them rehabilitated back into the community. At the last meeting of the month we are joined by a qualified specialist keep fit instructor to get survivors moving again. We are a friendly bunch; why not come and join us?
