he team here at Discovering Magazines are thrilled to announce plans to further extend our offering to the public by launching “Discovering Chatteris” next month. This will mean our “stable” will now have six titles, as we are already covering Bourne, March, Whittlesey, Wisbech and the Deepings.

The success we are seeing right now is due in no small part to the professional expertise of our many contributors, offering valuable insights and advice to you, our readers; our advertisers, several of whom have been with us for over a decade; and finally, our readers, many of whom continue to express (mostly!) favourable comments on what we are striving to achieve – an attractive publication which informs, advises and entertains our readers. I hope you find your September issue fulfilling these aims, as our long, hot summer (the hottest on record!) finally comes to an end and the winds and rains return to let us know that this is English weather after all!

Scrolling through Facebook the other day, an article caught my eye about the merits of four mopeds from when I was a teenager. It immediately took me back to being sixteen, as I had owned one of the models mentioned, a brand-new Garelli Rekord, a stunning looking bike that on a good day was the quickest around. This had replaced my first powered two-wheeler that my Dad had bought me for £30 from an old friend which had an engine in the back wheel and embarrassing baskets front and back. That had absolutely ruined my street cred, so after much saving and nagging my parents, I purchased the Garelli. My best mate also bought one at the same time and we thought we were the coolest kids around. However, my machine had a number of faults... it didn’t work in the rain, the brake light fused every few days and it also (honestly) would occasionally go into reverse! Consequently, on becoming seventeen I passed my driving test and bought a battered tenyear-old Saab 96 car from my big brother. However, my Rekord relationship may have been brief, but it still brings back many happy memories…

um, as an alcoholic spirit drink, has been around for many years, with history showing the records dating from at least the 17th century. The preferences and requirements of rums vary from person to person.

Some rum lovers may enjoy a light or golden-coloured rum, whist others could choose a dark-coloured rum, for example. Flavoured rums have also become widely popular over recent years, for rum ‘devotees’ too. The Caribbean area is very much recognised as ‘where it all started’, for rum productions. Family recipes and varying ingredients, plus the processes involved, bringing rums to fruition, all have an effect, for appearances, bouquets, mouthfeel and palatability – each to their own delectation! Recipe

Apple, Pear & Walnut Crumble

Ingredients...

500g apple, peeled, cored and cut into large chunks 500g pear, peeled, cored and cut into large chunks Finely grated zest of 1 lemon, juice of 1/2 lemon 2 tbsp light muscovado sugar

For the cru mble... 100g pack of walnuts

175g granary or wholemeal flour (or plain white) 85g butter, diced 85g caster or light muscovado sugar

Method

1 Heat oven to 190˚C/Fan 170˚C/Gas 5. Put the chopped apples, lemon zest and sugar in a saucepan. Add the lemon juice and cook for 3-4 mins. Tip in the pears and cook 2-3 mins more, until the fruits are just beginning to soften. Spoon the fruits and juices into a 1.7 litre pudding dish and flatten slightly. 2 For the crumble, finely chop half the walnuts in a food processor until reduced to the consistency of ground almonds. Add the flour, butter and sugar and continue to blitz to a coarse or fine crumble mix, whichever you prefer. 3 Roughly break the remaining walnuts with your fingers and stir into the crumble. Scatter the crumble mix on top of the fruits and bake for 20-25 mins until golden brown. Serve warm with cream or custard.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE As we have all been enjoying the recent great weather, please spare a thought for those not coping too well with it and keep an eye out for the signs of heat-related issues.

FIVEJAYS CELEBRATES MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY Whittlesey’s FiveJays Dog Club kicked off its Ruby anniversary celebrations in spectacular style with a ‘Picnic in the Paddock’ at its training field. The special event welcomed the Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Dr Neil Modha (representing the King), and the Mayor of Whittlesey. The dignitaries presented club founder Marion House with a special gift to honour her incredible forty years of voluntary service to the local community. It was an action-packed, family-friendly day. Highlights included: • A Flyball tournament: won by the victorious 'Club Blue Flyball Team'. • A Royal trial: Dr Modha’s family dog, Tallulah, even tried her paw at flyball, whilst his children received a hands-on show-handling lesson. • Canine catering: four-legged guests enjoyed a roaming ‘Puppaccino and Sausage Surprise’ wagon, whilst humans made use of the licensed bar. Vice president Fiona Durrant said: "We are all here for our love of dogs. This year we reflect on forty years of being at the heart of our rural community, but we are also looking ahead to the next forty." The celebrations are only just beginning as the club’s packed diary includes an upcoming curry night, companion shows, Scent & Search time trials, and a coach trip to London for a fortieth anniversary lunch at the Royal Kennel Club this month.

I had an invitation to an organisation I had not heard of before and was greeted with an amazing group called Five Jays Dog Club, located at the rear of DK Harris on the Pondersbridge road and to my amazement they were celebrating their fortieth anniversary. WELL DONE everyone and thank you for inviting me and the DL; we both enjoyed ourselves. Being the current Mayor, I am in the position to choose my charities for the year 2026/27. I have chosen MAGPAS, the air ambulance service, and NEWHEART Learning Centre, based just over the level crossing down Station Road. There are some smaller organisations that hopefully will receive money from the Mayor's Charities' Fund. They are: "Whittlesey Community Car Scheme", who provide a door-to-door service for those who lack transport to hospital, GP and dental appointments; "Cambridgeshire Acre – Coates Community Living Room, Coffee and Chat"; and "Cambridgeshire Acre – Pride in Turves Group", a new group trying to enhance the village of Turves. I wish all these groups the very best wishes going forward. Last but not least, as the Mayor I will be holding a charity ball on Saturday, September 26th at Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Club in Station Road Whittlesey. All monies made at this event will be going to my chosen charities. If you would like to attend, the town clerk will be happy to take your booking. Details are on the next page. Spotting an Energy Scam By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades It’s never too early to think about winter-proofing your property and your pocket. Energy saving is crucial, as is trying to get the very best deal when it comes to heating, insulating and protecting your home. However, look out for fraudsters! Scams to be aware of: Solar panels: Some scammers might use the fact you have solar panels to try and pressure you into maintenance contracts. Beware also of fraudulent companies texting to mislead homeowners by saying their ‘solar panel warranty has expired’, or companies that contact or cold call to sell you a ‘maintenance package’ while pretending to be with the certified Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Ofgem: This is where a scammer claims to be from the energy regulator Ofgem. They may ask you to change your bank details or provide personal information to get funding or cheap energy. Ofgem will never ask you for personal information, sell you energy, or show up at your house. Home improvements: Alarm bells should sound if you are contacted by a company telling you that your home is unsafe. Typical scams could include: • They can install energy efficiency improvements to save money on your bills. • You have spray foam insulation that needs to be removed. Meter reading scams: Scammers may impersonate your provider or another company to trick you into agreeing to an installation, sometimes requesting an upfront fee or personal details. However, smart meters are free to install. Your energy supplier should organise the installation and it should only be carried out by a qualified professional. Energy rebate: Although the Energy Bills Support Scheme (£400 Government Energy Bill Rebate) ended in March 2023, some scammers are still trying to trick homeowners into handing over personal and financial details. Other tactics have included promises of money to people of pension age or disabled people. Warm home discount: If you’re eligible for the Warm Home Discount, you’ll get a letter in the post. You won’t be contacted by text, and you won’t be asked for any bank details. If you do get a text about the Warm Home Discount, it’s a scam! ays are shortening and there will be quite a bit of clearing to do on the vegetable patch this month as you harvest all those wonderful crops. Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread disease so put them on the compost heap, if they are not diseased. Some examples of crops for planting now: • Winter lettuces (“Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose). • Spring greens – seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October. • Spinach. • Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves. • Onion sets and garlic. • “Green manures.” There are numerous varieties on the market but “Winter Mix” is a good recommendation. These green manures perform three main functions. – They provide compost material. – They help prevent weed growth. – They soak up nutrients that would normally be washed away by winter rains. If you have a light soil they can be left in over winter and early next spring the plants can be dug in before they flower. Those with clay soils will benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig. A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry. • If leaves are shading the fruit of your tomato plants, remove them now to help the trusses ripen. • Prune blackberries when picking is over, cut out all the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leave new canes unpruned. • Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds. • Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in. • Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners. • Apply nematodes to control slugs and snails while temperatures are still mild. Moist weather gives the best results. • Feed all late crops with a general fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure. • Lift potatoes if they are ready, usually 18-22 weeks after planting. Wait until the foliage has fully yellowed and died back. Cut the tops off and leave tubers in the soil for 10-14 days to allow skins to harden, improving storage life. Potatoes should be stored in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed, to prevent them turning green or rotting. • Lift onions, which should be stored in the light and, if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place.

Ready to turn your food waste into something remarkable? Start using your caddies now! Households across Fenland can now start filling their food waste recycling caddies, ready for Fenland District Council’s first food waste collections from Monday 7 September. Over the past six weeks, crews have delivered more than 90,000 caddies to over 45,000 homes across the district, together with a roll of indoor caddy liners and an instruction leaflet explaining how to get started. Cllr Steve Tierney, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Waste and Recycling, said: “Our food is for eating, not for wasting, but every meal leaves a little something behind – and when it’s recycled, it can do something remarkable! It produces energy to power homes and businesses, and fertiliser for our farmers. “We know some people don’t have any waste as they use it for pets or compost or other clever ways. But for those that do, the weekly food waste collection is going to give you more space in your bins, keep the flies and maggots away and be a useful addition. “We’re introducing this service to meet Government legislation, but it’s free and optional – and we’re confident those choosing to take part will love it.” Recycling your food waste is simple. Fill your indoor caddy with food scraps, then empty it into your outdoor caddy whenever you like – just as you would with any other bin. We recommend lining your indoor caddy to help keep it clean. Use the liners provided or reuse any plastic or paper bag as all liners are removed at the recycling facility before the food waste is processed. Then put your outdoor caddy out for collection every week, on the same day as your blue or green bin, with the bin handle up so crews can pick it up easily. If you’ve not received your food waste caddies, call 01354 654321 or email foodwaste@fenland.gov.uk to arrange delivery before collections begin. Please note, town centre flats and communal properties are not starting food waste collections yet. Caddy deliveries to these properties will form phase two of the service rollout in the winter. MATTERS FENLAND SCHOOLS HEAD TO FIRE STATIONS FOR SAFETY ZONES

Around one thousand youngsters from across Fenland have taken part in this year's Safety Zone. Hosted at Whittlesey, March and Wisbech fire stations, the events transform each station into a hub of learning activity, with the Year Six students rotating through interactive workstations focusing on different aspects of everyday safety. The young people picked up vital information about fire safety in the home, staying safe in and around water bodies, road safety and dog behaviour to online safety, basic first aid including CPR and age-related product safety. The Safety Zone events were launched by the Fenland Community Safety Partnership around twenty years ago, with the aim of equipping youngsters with skills to keep themselves and others safe.

The latest events, jointly organised by Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service's Community Fire Safety team and the Fenland Community Safety Partnership, saw twenty schools across Fenland take part. They were supported by colleagues from Fenland District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Wood Green Animal Shelter, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Healthy Schools Support Programme and the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Station Commander Scott Fretwell, the Fire Service's lead for Children and Young People, said: "We're delighted to host these Safety Zones at our fire stations again across Fenland. They provide a fantastic environment for young people to access important safety messaging and learn in a friendly environment frosm PIC of professional colleagues. All attendees take away a workbook, ensuring they are able to continue their learning after they leave us."

SMALL FRY NETS FUNDS Whittlesey Small Fry Youth Fishing Club held its recent gathering at the Bower just behind the Cricket Club on Manor Field. There was plenty of fish to be caught by the young fishermen and one experienced tutor also caught a nice sized one as well. The highlight was not just the delight shown on the youngsters’ faces, but also the fact that the club had a welcome visitor when Rebecca Speechley arrived to present it with £250 from the estate of the late John Dudley of Bellmans Road. For its summer outing, Whittlesey Ladysmith WI enjoyed a visit to Elton Hall near Peterborough. Members had a tour of the beautiful and tranquil gardens and enjoyed a very special lunch and a catch up with each other in a relaxing atmosphere. The day was rounded off with a spot of retail therapy among the lovely plants in the garden centre. The group meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in St Andrews Hall. FIGHT FOR LOCAL SERVICES HOTS UP By Steve Barclay MP

he summer has been dominated by a series of heatwaves and this was the backdrop to my recent meeting with the Anglian Water team responsible for the Fens Reservoir.

Significant work is underway, with millions being spent to date and more than five hundred staff working on the major infrastructure programme. My campaign to highlight recent cuts to health services at Doddington Hospital and call for improvements is gathering pace, with the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, who run key services at Doddington Hospital, finally releasing data on recent changes, after a six-month delay. It shows a number of services have been cut, including breast surgery which was stopped in May 2025, dermatology, stopped in July 2025, and ENT, also stopped in July 2025. There was no consultation on any of these changes last year, nor has there been any consultation on any of the changes this year. I have also discovered that so far in 2026 the North West Anglia Trust has paid out more than £1 million in voluntary redundancy for staff. It is not clear how many of these staff were either working at Doddington Hospital or supporting services

there. Yet our district keeps seeing more housing and being told by the health trust that they are committed to Doddington Hospital. It is an issue that requires much more transparency. Another change locally where there is little transparency or clarity is the reorganisation of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s local democracy. The outcome was due to be announced by the Government this summer, but a delay was announced in July without any information on what further information is now being sought by the Government, or when a decision will be published. Fenland must not be forced into a single unitary authority with Peterborough risking resources being diverted away from Fenland, residents inheriting Peterborough’s debt increasing their Council Tax bills, and services like free local council parking being lost. On a more positive note, I have been continuing my long-running campaign, working with the excellent Football Foundation, to improve sports facilities across Fenland. This builds on the new football facilities secured at Wisbech St Mary, Leverington and Estover. The latest additions are a £300,000 new Play zone at Whittlesey which has just been completed and looks great, and another £300,000 Play zone at Barton Road playing field in Wisbech which is about to be constructed. It is great to see these improved sports facilities within the community.

PROFESSOR TAKES CHILDREN ON A NAUTICAL ADVENTURE ‘Professor Pompoose’ of Discovering Whittlesea fame hosted a session at Whittlesey Library as part of the Summer Reading Challenge activities during the summer holidays. The Professor took the children, who were all aged between four-twelve years, on an

‘Under the Sea’ adventure. Everyone had great fun exploring the many types of sea creatures and then went on to make sea-themed puppets which they later used to perform their very own puppet show. It was a proud moment when they received a huge cheer and rapturous applause from all the grown-ups and members of the audience especially as some of them had never performed in public before.

DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Congratulations to William and Dena Old who have celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary. They were married at Balham Baptist Church in London only a few days before the 1966 World Cup Final and spent their honeymoon in Menorca oblivious to the final taking place; it was only when a local shouted out Bobby Charlton’s name that they realised that it was extra time and England were just about to lift the trophy. The couple moved to Bedfordshire then Cumbria for many years before coming to Eastrea twenty-three years ago. It was a special day in Coates when the first Icon Fest saw females gather and relax while listening to some great music as well as enjoying plenty of stalls. Organised by Elizah York, the concept of the event was purely for women by women with the power to fill their cup with enjoyment. CHARITY BOWLS COMPETITION’S A ROARING SUCCESS Whittlesey Town Bowls Club hosted the second annual Lions charity event which saw seven teams of three battle it out to be champions before finishing the day with a meal at the New Crown. Celebrations will start with a parade from Broad Street which will wind its way to the Market Square for the official opening by the Mayor of Whittlesey, Cllr Alex Miscandlon. You are encouraged to line the streets and cheer them along the way. There’ll be a full programme of entertainment for you to enjoy on the Market Square, in St Mary’s Church and Church Yard Green. The festival will welcome back The Black Eagles with their stunning acrobatic display. See many different styles of dance including the Solas School of Irish Dancing (pictured above), the Michelle Murray School of Highland Dancing, traditional Lithuanian dance from ‘Raskila,’ and a breathtaking display from the East Elite Allstars Cheerleaders and Starlight Twirlettes majorette troupe. Talented youths from both The Vault and Limelight performing arts academies will showcase their talents and JezO’s hilarious comedy magic show will be on the Square too. Also not to be missed are the Tri- Counties Pipe and Drums, and King Don Steel drums (pictured right). There’ll be music to suit all tastes in St Mary’s Church with choirs from Alderman Jacobs and Park Lane schools, the Whittlesey Concert Band, 56
