hose longed-for sunny days and warm evenings could at last be here, so let the outdoor fun and games begin!

It seems only weeks since the garden furniture and barbecue were safely stashed away for winter, and now, here we are... ready and willing to brave whatever the elements decide to throw our way. As I write, a torrential storm has just been followed within minutes by the sun. Oh, to be in England now that summer’s (nearly) here! Here’s hoping we may all have a super al fresco month!

One very significant birthday this month (and one which I dare not forget!) sees our amazing Sales Account Manager for our Wisbech and March issues, Paula Kirtland, reaching the grand age of - -! Have a great day, “Big Sister!”

A reminder to you all that June 21st happens to be Father’s Day, so love and best wishes go to my husband, Chris, and father-in-law, Rich.

The stage is set for what is widely acknowledged to be the biggest sporting event across the globe as the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off on June 11th and continues until July 19th.

Now that is good news or bad news depending on your opinion of football – which should probably be called wrestling when played in the English Premier League…

This year’s tournament features a record forty-eight countries taking part including some first-timers such as Cape Verde and Uzbekistan.

England will once again be performing on centre stage at the contest which will feature matches played in sixteen cities across Mexico, the USA and Canada.

No doubt England fans will be in for the normal roller-coaster of emotions, from high optimism to utter dejection, but at least it should bring people together for the next few weeks.

Finally, best wishes to all those taking part in Big Bash VI on Sunday, June 21st. Fingers crossed that the weather is kind…

Wines: Some Favourites from Lebanon

L

ebanon is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean and has a winemaking culture dating back several thousand years.

Multi award-winning Chateau Khoury winery is in the Bekaa Valley, at the eastern foothills of Mount Lebanon. Their vineyards enjoy perfect conditions for the growing of high-quality grapes, ultimately leading to the resulting high-quality wines.

Chateau Khoury Rêve Blanc (13% vol). This straw-yellowcoloured wine, from Chateau Khoury, has an abundance of flowers and ripe, summer fruits on the bouquet. Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Riesling grape varieties are utilised, to a great advantage, to produce this very popular wine. The mouthfeel is excellent, promoting a superb flavour, to give an extended sensation, for the palate’s delight.

Chateau Khoury Cuvée Ste Thérèse (13% vol) is a very easydrinking wine. Cherry red, in colour and produced using Caladoc and Pinot Noir grape varieties, this fruity wine pairs very well indeed with meats and a good number of other dishes, splendidly.

Chateau Khoury, Château Symphonie (13.5% vol) I found to be a deep-red production, with a powerful bouquet and having a long palate. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah grape varieties give the ‘Symphony’ of aromas and flavours. An absolute delight to accompany casseroles and red meat dishes of cuisine.

This hugely pleasing red wine favourite, has many red wine lovers, with its impressive bouquet and long palate sensation.

Chateau Khoury Pérséïdes (14.5% vol) is another red wine that pleases numerous connoisseurs.

s the warm weather of summer beckons, it's time to shed our winter boots and slip into sandals and flip-flops. But before you expose your feet to the world, it's important to give them some extra TLC. Proper foot care during summer can help prevent discomfort, pain, and potential foot problems. MAYOR’S MESSAGE

I have just been re-elected as Whittlesey mayor for the year 2026/2027 and I feel honoured to serve our town for another year.

Alex Miscandlon Before I was elected, we had a visit from the new High Sherriff Francis Burkitt DL, and I gave him a tour of our town. He was amazed how big the parish of Whittlesey is and, in his words, said we are like a district council on our own, as we toured the villages. He would like a return visit to see more of the area, and he will see how we all enjoy our region when he hopefully joins us all at the Big Bash this month.

The Citizen of the Year award this year goes to Mr Mark Cross and well deserved it is too. The Young Citizen of the Year goes to Finlay Watson and I’d like to add my congratulation to both of them.

The awards will be presented at the Big Bash.

I hope everybody is keeping well and I look forward to seeing as many of you at the upcoming events.

ANNIVERSARY COUPLE TAKE TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE Local couple Brenda and Gordon Gilbert have celebrated seventy-two years of happy marriage and have shared this very special occasion with family and friends at Cedar Court in Whittlesey.

Brenda recently took a trip down Memory Lane when, accompanied by Gordon and Cedar Court staff, she visited Whittlesey Library where she had worked as a librarian for twenty-nine years.

She browsed the bookshelves, had a go at a jigsaw puzzle and listened to a story being read to visiting children, commenting, "It looks very different now.”

When she returned to Cedar Court, she said it had been “a lovely day out.”

MUSEUM CELEBRATES SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY

It was celebration time for the Whittlesey Museum as it celebrated its fiftieth anniversary.

Trustees, volunteers and supporters were welcomed to Whittlesey’s St Andrew’s Hall for afternoon tea.

Cedar Court resident Peggy recently had a trip to Whittlesey Museum to see her Christening gown and cup on display when she was accompanied by staff and her grandson Graham.

Peggy, who will be celebrating her 100th birthday this year, really enjoyed her visit to the museum and also looking around Whittlesey. When she returned to Cedar Court, Peggy said, "It was a wonderful visit, the way my cup and gown were displayed, they looked like new. Thank you to everyone who organised this trip for me.”

DONATION TO NGNPUK NGNPUK received a very generous donation of £2868 from Ramsey Rotary club. The club very kindly donated the money to purchase two complete syringe driver set-ups for the local communities.

Syringe drivers are small portable computerised machines that deliver pain relief and other drugs in palliative care. They can help patients remain comfortable at home with their loved ones instead of going into hospital or a hospice. One machine costs £1438 and can help so many during its working lifetime. Many large local areas were sharing just a small number of these vital machines when the charity was set up and this donation brings the total machines donated to 137 over the eleven years it has been running.

COUNCILLOR SURGERIES Councillor surgeries are held in Peel House at 8 Queen Street, Whittlesey from 9.30am-10.30am on the first Saturday of every month throughout 2026.

WI MEMBERS TAKE A BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF TOWN

Whittlesey WI started its new year in April with an extremely interesting talk by Barry Wainwright about drones and photography, illustrated with spectacular slides showing amazing views of the local countryside and buildings, taken by a camera on board the drones.

He told lots of interesting stories and showed the group the cockerel at the top of St Mary's Church which could be seen in minute detail, displaying an inscription with the donor's name and date on it.

In May, Jacqui from Mere-Ceramics came along with a selection of ceramic items for the ladies to choose from to decorate. Members had a super time being creative with the paint and colours that Jacqui provided. The group had lots of fun producing works of art and look forward to receiving the items back, once they have been fired.

On Saturday, 6th June 2026, Councillors present will be Chris Boden (District & Town Councillor) & Peter Bibb (Town Councillor).

The Surgery is in the Town Council Offices at Peel House, 8 Queen Street, Whittlesey, PE7 1AY, and is accessed via the covered walkway. The entrance is to the left through the double doors, the offices offer full disabled facilities. Nichola and Mandy from Merrylegs Charitable Trust gave Coates WI members an interesting insight into the running of an animal rescue centre, highlighting the hard work, the joy, but also heartbreak.

The next meeting on June 3rd will be a Pétanque evening at the village’s Vine public house.

Guests and new members are always welcome to join the group which meets on the first Wednesday of the month (no meeting January) at Coates Village Hall at 7.30pm.

SAXON PIT LIAISON GROUP TO BE APPOINTED

A new liaison group is to be formed regarding the Saxon Pit Metal Recycling centre in Whittlesey in order to develop and enhance local relationships The inaugural meeting will be held at 10am on June 8th at Peel House, Queen Street, Whittlesey.

Three local residents are invited to join the group, so if anyone is interested in becoming one of the community representatives, they are asked to attend and be prepared to provide a brief resumé as to why they feel they would be well suited to represent local residents on the group.

The elected chair, who it is anticipated will be a local county councillor, will decide who is picked.

They are to be representative of the community so will be obliged to liaise with other residents.

The group is, however, primarily looking for residents who live on the three roads that are adjacent to Saxon. It is expected that the Saxon Residents Group will have representation and that a student will also be able to join the group to represent the youth in the community.

MORE PROVISIONS FOR PANTRY

Whittlesey Community Pantry has received a significant boost thanks to a grant from the Glassmoor Bank Wind Turbine Fund.

A state-of-the-art cabin, which will act as a collection point, is now situated at the Danzan Logistics Stadium, home to Whittlesey Athletic on Drybread Road.

The Pantry collects surplus dated food from retailers that is still in very good condition to prevent it from going to landfill. The food is free for anybody from the community to collect, although a nominal £1 per bag donation is welcome.

Elvis has left the building, well certainly the Manor Bowls Club in Whittlesey.

Ed Popescu entertained a packed venue with his tribute to the singer. Colin Martin of Whittlesey Music Nights was the organiser of the event and he was delighted to welcome back Ed to Whittlesey after a successful show in the past.

This was the last Whittlesey Music Night event as Colin takes a break from providing these events in the town.

Phone scams are taking a sinister twist as a new approach sees victims’ voices being cloned. It takes just three seconds of audio to clone a voice, and the latest fraud tactic seems to be targeting older people.

Criminals are using AI technology to clone people’s voices and set up unauthorised direct debits over the phone, according to new evidence from National Trading Standards. The advanced voice cloning is part of an organised criminal operation that harvests people’s personal data to target victims with a wave of scam and nuisance calls.

The process usually starts with a ‘cold call’ claiming to run a survey. This may seem harmless enough, but in fact it is designed to gather detailed personal, health and financial information. The criminals use this data to develop AI-generated voice clones, used to simulate consent for direct debits, deceiving even legitimate businesses and financial providers. These details appear then to be passed or sold to other criminal operations who, with the details, can easily circumvent the banks and set up payments without the victim’s knowledge. Worryingly, victims often do not realise payments are being taken.

As part of the data, figures from National Trading Standards show that 21% of adults receive scam calls or texts most days, and almost 9% receive them every day. This new wave of technologically sophisticated scams highlights the need for increased vigilance, particularly among older people who are often specifically targeted.

Some of you may have seen the subject covered on a recent episode of BBC’s “Morning Live” with Scam Interceptor, Nick Stapleton. His advice is to stay silent on the phone if you receive a cold call or a call you are not expecting and / or simply hang up without engaging in conversion. Ultimately, be cautious about sharing personal information over the phone and to be alert to any suspicious activity on your accounts.

If you or someone you know receives unexpected calls asking for personal information, it is recommended to hang up and contact your bank or service provider directly using trusted contact details.

MATTERS BOBBY SCHEME CELEBRATION Local dignitaries were invited to attend an afternoon tea as a celebration event to mark twenty-five years of the Bobby Scheme.

Huntingdon Town Hall was the venue as trustees of the scheme and the Mayor of Huntingdon welcomed the Lord Lieutenant Mrs Julie Spence, the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire Francis Burkitt, the Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire Simon Megicks and many more who support the scheme.

The Cambridgeshire Police Shrievalty Trust is a registered charity which was formed in 1999 to improve community safety in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The name of the trust reflects the fact that two organisations were primarily responsible for its creation – Cambridgeshire Constabulary and The Office of High Sheriff. The Bobby Scheme was established in 2001 by the trust and so far, has helped secure more than 45,000 homes.

MURDER MOST FOUL INVESTIGATED

Police were called to Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Club as a double murder was revealed in front of more than one hundred witnesses.

Akin to Midsummer Murders, would-be detectives were crawling all over the evidence in a desperate attempt to solve the murder of journalist Cam Payne who was about to spill the beans about other members in the community. Poison was his downfall, but who did the dirty deed?

Strictly Murders from St Neots provided the gruesome goings on with characters including Lucy Fer, Willie Fall the Jockey, Dr Gene Poole, Richard Head, Sir Maurice Minor MP, Beatrice Minor and Lady Minnie Minor all being suspects. In between the acts there was a two-course evening meal as the audience (detectives) deliberated on who they thought was the guilty party.

The winning team worked out that it was the MP who not only had bumped off the journalist, but also had a hand in his brother’s murder.

Monies raised from the evening will go towards the Whittlesey Warriors Netball Club and also towards the upkeep of the Indoor Bowls Club.

WET BELT HORROR! VAUXHALL PEUGEOT CITROEN FORD

The photos above were taken from a 2020 Vauxhall Grandland 1.2 pure tech which had covered 29,000 miles from new. The customer complained of an oil pressure fault coming up on his dash.

So If you own a Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen or Ford with a 1.0 litre v�, 1.2 litre v� or 1.2 pure tech engine in we strongly recommend having your �ming belt checked and if necessary replaced.

We got the vehicle in and found that the engine had low oil pressure, we removed the oil sump pan and found that the oil pick up gauze was completely blocked solid not allowing any oil to get up and around the engine. The blockage was caused by �ming belt debris. These engines are run by a �ming belt that is situated inside the engine constantly soaked in oil, which over �me causes the belt to degrade and fragments of the belt to fall into the sump, this process is sped up by lack of oil changes and also incorrect oil being used, but ul�mately inevitable.

This same idea of the WET BELT has been adopted by Ford, with the 1 litre petrol ecoboost engine commonly found in the Ford Focus, Cmax and Fiesta. Also the 2.0 litre Tdci eco blue diesel engine, commonly found in the Ford Transit, Custom and Ranger. These belts are also failing.

MANOR LEISURE CENTRE GETS £2MILLION GRANT BOOST

Fenland District Council’s plans to transform the Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey have taken a major step forward thanks to a £2million grant from Sport England.

The funding supports the council’s proposed £18.67million redevelopment of the centre, part of its member-led Fenland Inspire! investment campaign to enhance leisure facilities and public spaces across the district.

Developed in partnership with Alliance Leisure, the project sets out a full redevelopment and expansion of the existing swimming pool building and the demolition of the separate sports hall. If approved, the scheme would replace the ageing facilities with a modern, purpose-built community hub offering a much wider range of activities and community uses.

The redevelopment proposals would also boost the wider Manor field and park area. If taken forward, a new café would be enjoyed by both leisure centre and park users, while a new artificial turf PlayZone – due to be

The £2million grant has been awarded through Sport England’s Place Capital Funding, which provides significant investment to local authorities looking to deliver large-scale improvements to their sports and physical activity facilities.

If approved, the proposed facilities would include: • A modern entrance with café and social space, including space for buggies and mobility equipments • A refurbished 25-metre, six-lane pool and learner pool • A larger gym and two fitness studios • A new, enhanced soft play facility • Flexible event space and community room • Three covered padel courts • A new skate park and enhanced rifle range • Considerable improvements to accessibility • Enhanced links to outdoor spaces • A larger car park

B

eing Professor Pompoose Knoweet-all by name and by nature, I often think about this as I‘m aware there’s a lot of scientists out there hoping to be as clever as me. Yes, I know that’s hard to believe but it’s true, haha!

As a leading scientist, I know there are so many new things to discover, insects, plants, animals, and in space, so it could take a looooong time.

Sidney (my pet grass snake) and I were in the garden the other day searching for bugs and creatures, it’s amazing what you can find if you look carefully, and as the weather gets warmer there will be even more.

With all the new discoveries yet to be made it got me thinking about some of the incredible things that have happened recently.

• The Artemis II mission to the moon. Wow! How lucky were those four astronauts to have the opportunity to spend ten days in the Orion space capsule? They travelled around the whole moon (making a lunar loop), including

the far side, which hadn’t been done for more than fifty years. They reached speeds of up to approximately 25,000 miles per hour – hitting the Earth’s atmosphere at over thirty times the speed of sound. I hear this was just a test flight for future missions so I’ve decided I’m going to contact NASA to see if I can go next time – you never know!

• A big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my hero Sir David Attenborough, who was one hundred years old on May 8th. He’s amazing! We can learn so much from his discoveries in nature and the planet and because I think he is soooo cool, I’m even going to admit he’s as clever as me, well almost, haha!

• Whilst history is not my first subject, I must mention why May 8th was worthy of another celebration.

It was VE day (Victory in Europe Day) when eighty-one years ago World War II ended in Europe. A big THANK YOU! to all those that served in the war for our country because without them we wouldn’t have the freedom to have the education we enjoy advancing in our knowledge and technology.

Learning new things is exciting and we must do our best, but there will always be those things that can’t be done no matter how hard we try. I read in my bible in Matthew 19 v26 ‘With God all things are possible’ and that encourages me to continue to believe in those things I don’t always understand.

COUNCIL PRAISED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE WORK

Fenland District Council has been awarded a nationally recognised mark of excellence for its commitment to supporting residents affected by domestic abuse.

FENLAND COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS TO BE HONOURED The winners of Fenland District Council’s Pride in Fenland Awards 2026 will be announced on July 1st.

The awards recognise the people of Fenland who make a difference and, in most cases, they are for community champions whose efforts benefit an organisation, community, village or town, but in some cases the impact may be more specific such as a courageous young carer.

Cllr Susan Wallwork, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder with responsibility for the Pride in Fenland Awards, said: “We say every year, and it never becomes less true, that these awards are an annual highlight. They’re all about what is good in the world and in Fenland and every year they show us how abundant that goodness is.

The council has received Gold Accreditation from the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA), the UK benchmark which recognises how housing services respond to victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

DAHA awarded the accreditation following an in-depth, rigorous assessment process, which found the council demonstrated passion, dedication and commitment to adopting and embedding the standards of the DAHA framework.
