T

he last few weeks have made me realise just how fortunate we are, living so close to the beautiful Bourne Woods, a special dogwalking treat for our two hounds.

Fabulous carpets of bluebells, celandines and wood anemones right now are an absolute delight, along with the increasing amount of birdsong, as the evenings remain lighter for longer.

It saddens me, however, when the news from around the world seems to involve a violent and unstable future for us all. If only more people were to follow those wise words of P.T. Barnum in ‘The Greatest Showman’… “The noblest art is that of making others happy.” Those people who are fondly remembered for generations are the ones who will have given their time, love, and kindness to others.

Strolling into town early the other day I heard a loud commotion emanating from a riverside garden.

When I looked over, I was confronted by the sight of a cat pursuing a squirrel with it literally being right on its tail like a scene from an old cartoon.

Of course, the squirrel got away by running vertically up a conveniently placed tree much to the moggie’s disappointment.

Seeing them brought home to me how many animals I have spotted on my daily walks, including deer of all types, foxes, swans and assorted birds of prey.

Their presence in the locality actually brightens my day and their exploits come as a welcome diversion from life’s challenges, something that I’m sure is shared by many as proven locally by the social media interest in the now famous ‘Geese of March’ who enjoy the freedom of the town…

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

As the days get longer, we all look forward to better weather and being able to get out and about and enjoy ourselves with family Alex Miscandlon and friends and with all the great events that are to take place in and around Whittlesey; to name a few – The Big Bash, Whittlesey Festival, Music on the Square. It should, weather permitting, be a great time ahead for all concerned.

My time has been taken up with visiting the new shops that have taken up the chance to improve their opportunity to have a great future in Whittlesey and I wish them all the best and thank you for choosing Whittlesey to open your business – all the greatest of success going forward.

The invitations for the mayor to attend events outside Whittlesey are starting to arrive. As always, it comes down to trying to visit other towns and villages to promote our town and what great events we produce for everyone that visits. So going forward, on behalf of Whittlesey Town Council, we hope everyone has an enjoyable time.

DUCK RACE BRINGS OUT THE CROWDS

It was a fantastic day on Easter Monday for the Whittlesey Town Council Mayor's Charity Duck Race which attracted a packed crowd on both banks of the Bower, cheering one thousand ducks around the course with the help of Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue.

It was touch and go all the way with some young pretenders to the throne setting the pace before some of the more experienced ducks gave it all when it counted.

Winning duck 528 was owned and trained by Cllr Mrs Dee Laws who won £100, sponsored by Whittlesey Sports Association – The Big Bash. The winning time was fourteen minutes and fourteen seconds.

Second duck home was 459, owned and trained

by Louise Aldridge, who won £75, courtesy of Adam at BBQ & Brews on Church Street while the third duck, 426, was owned and trained by Callum Dowler and family, winning £25, sponsored by Coles Barbers of Queens Street.

FOOTBALL BOOTS SWAPPED FOR CAR BOOT…

The event saw £2000 raised which will be passed onto the Mayor’s Good Causes; Defibrillators For All and No Gain No Pain (providing syringe drivers).

The event was held to raise valuable funds for the hundreds of young footballers at the club with the next one taking place on Sunday, May 3rd.

d e ll i r Charg d a l a S o t a t o P Ingredients Serves 6 1.25kg new potatoes, halved 10g dill, chopped 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 150g half-fat crème 30g flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1½ tbsp sherry vinegar

Jersey Royals are now in season so give your humble potato salad a crispy, smokey edge with this tasty recipe... worth firing up the barbecue for!

Method

• Boil the potatoes in a pan for around 10 mins or until just tender; drain.

• If using a gas barbecue, pre-heat to medium-high, or if using charcoal wait until the coals are glowing and the flames have died down. Grill the potatoes for 10-15 mins, turning often, until crisp and golden.

• Mix the remaining ingredients and season. Stir in the potatoes and serve.

SOME OF ENGLAND’S STILL AND SPARKLING FAVOURITES

M

ulti award-winning Denbies Wine Estate (Est. 1986) is located in Dorking, Surrey. Utilising several grape varieties, Denbies produces both high-quality still and sparkling wines.

My notes (Still wines): DENBIES FLINT VALLEY (11.5% vol).

This dry white wine pleases on the nose with fresh citrus notes that carry through to the flavour.

Splendid with poached and smoked salmon.

DENBIES SURREY GOLD (11% vol) is a medium-dry, white wine and is good for the nasal senses, with the fragrant bouquet enticing to the floral/fruit hints for the mouthfeel and the palate’s delight. Pairs very well with foods of a spicy nature, including many Asian dishes.

If a ‘pink’ wine is required, I would suggest DENBIES ROSE HILL (11% vol). Summer fruits come to mind for this easy-drinking delectation, which I found refreshing and great to add colour to a dining table, as well as for al fresco occasions.

A fantastic accompaniment to salads and white meats.

DENBIES REDLANDS (12.5% vol) is my selection for an excellent, smooth, medium-bodied dry red wine. Overtones of ripe, dark fruits are in abundance, for this crimson-coloured production, right from the bouquet. Perfect to accompany casseroles and red meats.

My notes (Sparkling, aged, bottle-fermented wines): DENBIES GREENFIELDS (12% vol). The colour of golden-straw entices to the aroma and the tasting – an excellent example of a sparkling wine. Crisp, rich and with an extended palate.

DENBIES WHITEDOWNS BRUT (12.5% vol) is very popular, satisfying a lot of sparkling preferences and tastes. With fresh, ripe fruits evident for the mouthfeel, I found this production to be crisp and most pleasurable.

DENBIES CUBITT BLANC DE BLANCS (12% vol) is a much sought-after sparkling production from this company, which is only produced in the best of seasons. The quality is very much appreciated by many.

The bouquet is pleasant and appealing, then, the taste buds are activated, continuing on, to a grand finish.

IRAQI WAR SERVICE

COUNCIL RESPONDS TO REORGANISATION PLANS

Fenland District Council has confirmed its support for Option D (proposal 4) in the Government's statutory consultation on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

While the council remains clear that the Government's approach to reorganisation is ‘unduly rushed’ and ‘restricted in scope, it has concluded that Option D is the only viable model that protects local communities, reflects real economic geographies and avoids creating an unsustainable new authority.

Under Option D, three new unitary councils would be created across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough: • Greater Peterborough Unitary Authority: comprising Peterborough City Council and Northern Huntingdonshire District Council.

• Cambridgeshire Fens Unitary Authority: comprising Fenland, East Cambridgeshire and Eastern and Southern Huntingdonshire District Councils.

• Greater Cambridge Unitary Authority: comprising South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridge City Council.

I struggled to say I was an estate agent for a long time. The industry's got a reputation. VOLUNTEER DAY A HIT

There was a chance to get involved with volunteering thanks to a Support Fenland Volunteer morning at Peel House in Whittlesey where there were plenty of stalls to check out. It was great to see so many people coming forward to sign up to the many organisations who always welcome an extra pair of hands.

NOAH’S GLIMPSE OF INDIA The Rotary Club of Whittlesey met at the Falcon Inn when the special guest was sixteen-year-old Whittlesey resident Cadet Staff Sergeant Noah Randall.

Noah recently visited India for eighteen days as part of an exchange programme in a delegation from the UK. He has been part of the Whittlesey Detachment of Cadets for four years and applied for the trip, where the selection process included an application, drill video and an interview. Four hundred applied, with fifty gaining an interview and Noah finishing in the top ten.

Noah was lost for words when his mum broke the news in September with the departure being in January.

He said India was ‘a great place to visit’ and he made many friendships and still keeps in touch with new connections. A highlight was visiting the Taj Mahal and parading for the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Republic Day Parade and trying new foods.

The India Youth Exchange Programme is a testament to the long-standing partnership between the UK and India, promoting international cooperation and cultural understanding.

It was presentation time at PCVS in Peterborough.

High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire the Hon Frances Stanley DL presented High Sheriff Awards to recipients including Andrew Johnson, the driver of the train in November that was the scene of a frenzied knife attack.

Radio Fenland presenter and Big Bash organiser, Robert Windle also received an award for a record third time with the other recipients being Perri Selwood, representing the Bobby Scheme, Kirsteen McVeigh, CEO of PCVS, Jonathan Jelley MBE, chairman, PCVS, Moez Nathu BEM, CEO of the Peterborough Asylum & Refugee Community Association, and Faustina Yang, a Chinese community leader.

ay can provide a variety of adverse weather conditions, so you may have to protect young seedlings from a late frost or make sure they are well watered if we don’t have enough rain.

Harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches” by cutting down the 2 litre plastic drinks bottles, (useful for protecting young runner beans and peas). Alternatives to use are fleece, bubble wrap or newspaper.

Also, hold back on planting out seeds at the beginning of the month as sometimes they are planted too early: the ground may be too wet or cold and they fail to germinate. Whatever the weather, it does seem to favour the weeds!! So, make sure these are kept in check as they take precious nutrients away from young plants and seedlings.

Other jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes-when the leaves are about 20cm tall, draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cm high: this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green and poisonous.

• May is suitable for planting out early, such as leeks, sprouts and summer cabbage.

Leek seedlings should resemble a pencil in size. Make a 6-inch-deep hole with a pole

or a similar tool, place the seedling inside, and fill the hole with water. There is no need to fill in the hole with soil.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

• Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Some crops may require support ready for their growth, such as beans and peas and climbing plants. Ensure it is strong and sturdy to take the weight once the fruits have formed, as well as the foliage, and that it can withstand any winds.

• Seeds to sow out this month include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas.

• Try “succession sowing” a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks and you should have a steady supply, rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination.

• Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages and towards the end of the month, when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors.

• Put up supports for climbing beans and runner beans. You can either buy a readymade support or make a wigwam or row using bamboo canes or hazel poles.

CHILL & CHAT HEAD-TO-HEAD

Manea Church Hall was the venue for a competitive Chill & Chat special session when hosts Manea took on Coates for the Fenland World Championship.

DJ McCoy of Radio Fenland was there to see fair play and it was an excellent demonstration of sportsmanship of the highest order. Many thanks to Living Sport who were appointed by the ‘Olympics’ committee to provide the sports and the helpers and supporters who cheered every point and washed and dried every cup.

So many rosettes were presented that passersby thought a dog show was being held; these went to the winners as well as those showing extreme and not so extreme skills.

There was also a special presentation by March Lions to fourteen-year-old Xavier who received a certificate for volunteering close to thirty hours over the last few months.

The sessions are provided by Cambridgeshire Acre and some are in danger of closing due to lack of funding. FANTASTIC FLORAL EVENING Coates WI’s Easter floral arranging evening by Anne Purt was said to be very enjoyable and funny, with the beautiful finished arrangements raffled at the end of the demonstration to the delight of the lucky winning members.

The next meeting on May 6th will feature a talk about Merrylegs/Anna’s Ark. Guests and new members are always welcome to join the group which meets on the first Wednesday of the month (no meeting January) at Coates Village Hall at 7.30pm.

COMIC RELIEF CONTEST

New Road Primary School in Whittlesey was the venue for a Comic Relief special contest thanks to the organising skills of Mrs Jeanette Bowden.

Two teams, one made up of New Road staff the other from Whittlesey Warriors, battled it out for the bragging rights in front of the whole school.

Although the Warriors took the honours, the real winner was Comic Relief for which £110 was raised.

ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR The Spring Fair arrived in Whittlesey on the Market Square and featured an array of attractions, including Hook a Duck, Helter Skelter and rides for all ages.

FACTORY SHOP STAFF SAY FAREWELL It was the final day as the Original Factory Shop closed in Whittlesey for the last time. There was a tear in the eye for the ten members of the remaining staff who have served the community in High Causeway.

Manager Jayne Thompson had been at the store since it opened seventeen years ago with Fiona (Fi) being there for fifteen years and Sammy ten years. Some will be taking a deserved break while others have found new opportunities starting straight away.

Jayne said: "I would like to thank the wonderful staff who have been part of the story of this store and all the local people who have shopped and also sent messages of thanks and support."

BINGO NIGHT RAISES FUNDS FOR HALL

It was eyes down and a full house at Coates Public Hall as it was Teddi's Bingo night, raising money for the hall. The evening involved singing by Teddi and plenty of winners.

MAYOR WELCOMES NEWCOMERS As High Causeway Whittlesey said goodbye to the Factory Shop, it welcomed a new store and new pub landlords.

Roll Masters have taken the building that previously was Malcolm James Estate Agents.

The owners are Andy and Sue Hill with Lesley Page a valued member of the team.

Meanwhile, the New Crown sees new landladies who are mother and daughter, Rachelle Oliver and Jodie Hawes, supported by Rachelle's husband Mark and other family members, including Rio and Caitlyn. Rachelle previously owned Cherry Peppers in Whittlesey but when the opportunity arose, they snapped up the chance of realising their dream.

WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL TO RETURN IN SEPTEMBER Planning is already well underway for this year’s festival on Sunday, September 13th so make sure you note the date in your calendars.

It’s a great day out for all the family, starting with a parade at 10am and closing with a superb finale at 4pm. Performers, including a great line up of singers, musicians, acrobats, magicians, majorettes and dance groups will entertain you with their amazing talents on the Market Square and in St Mary’s church and church yard green on the day.

The streets will be buzzing with classic cars on display, and plenty of stalls to suit every taste.

There’s plenty of rides and attractions for the children with something for everyone.

The Festival Schools Art Exhibition will again be showcasing artistic talent from all local primary schools and Sir Harry Smith Community College in the Whittlesey Library, both on festival day and for two weeks after the event.

All entries will be submitted via the schools.

The ever-popular fundraising Coffee Morning will be on Saturday, June 6th at 10am-1pm at Sadie’s in Station Road. Entertainment will be provided by singers and musicians, Dale Diamond and Dave Bailey. Delicious cake, tea, coffee and fantastic raffle prizes will be available on the day. Tickets are £5 each and can be purchased in advance from Parkers Newsagents, Market Street or contact Jenny Parker, Tel: (01733) 351005 (mobile: 07436 269616) or Averil Cosstick at (01733) 705351 (mobile: 07307 903903) or purchased at the door on the day. Under 12s are admitted free but must be accompanied by an adult.

NEW APPEAL FOR MORE ON-CALL FIREFIGHTERS

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking to recruit more on-call firefighters to help local communities by responding to emergencies.

On-call firefighters are a vital part of the fire and rescue service and respond to a wide range of incidents, from fighting fires and attending road traffic collisions to rescuing people and animals in need and responding to medical emergencies.

In addition to responding to emergency incidents, on-call firefighters support their communities by providing a range of safety advice helping people to keep safe in their homes.

Being an on-call firefighter has many benefits. As well as being paid an annual wage and for the time spent at incidents or training, there are also opportunities to develop first aid skills and heavy goods vehicle driving qualifications.

It says: • Dispose of garden waste using either a local waste pick up service or take it to a local recycling centre. Do not light a bonfire!

• Do not leave glass bottles lying on the ground – the sun’s rays reflect through the glass and can start a fire.

If you are planning to have a BBQ: • Use barbeques on a hard, flat surface away from grass, shrubs or fencing.

• Put disposable barbeques on bricks, do not place directly on grass.

HOLIDAY CLUB ATTRACTS LOCAL CHILDREN New Road Primary School was the venue for the annual Whittlesey Baptist Church Easter Holiday Club.

The church organised its first holiday club in 1978, before taking a break, returning in 1982 with Alan and Sylvia Taylor at the helm.

Between eighty and a hundred local children attended the three-day sessions and it's provided, free of charge, thanks to funding by members of the church.
