Welcome to your January issue...
S
o here we go into 2026 with new year’s resolutions made and high hopes for the future.
On behalf of our hard-working team at Discovering Magazines, I would just like to wish you all a fabulous 2026, with good health and success in whatever lies in front of you, your family, and your friends. I know many readers who see their monthly ‘Discovering’ magazine almost like an ‘old friend’, dropping by to keep them in touch with events in their town and activities to come; to keep them up to date with advice from our many contributors; and to entertain with our quizzes and competitions. Why not just settle down with a drink and relax with that ‘old friend’ and enjoy our offering this month? All the very best for 2026!
Claire x
Welcome to the first issue of 2026. The new year will inevitably come with its own unique challenges but it will also hopefully present some new opportunities for those willing to grasp them. Let’s hope the next twelve months sees local businesses flourish and organisations thrive and prosper. There are many people in the Fens who work hard each week to try and provide a better future for themselves and their families and I wish them all good fortune for the year ahead. Life can sometimes seem rather grim with obstacles seemingly in the way of personal happiness, but there is plenty to be thankful for... we live in Fenland alongside some fantastic people! The Discovering team looks forward to continuing to bring you the best possible magazine each month and I would like to wish you all health and happiness throughout 2026...

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
First things first, a happy new year to everyone and welcome to 2026. Let’s hope it will be a better year for everyone as 2025 was a sad year for a lot of friends.
Alex Miscandlon
So, cheer-up everyone and look forward to all the great events that will be held in and around Whittlesey in the coming year starting with the Straw Bear and the Big Bash, to name just two. What we must always remember is that all these events take time to put together and require a team of volunteers to go to the ends of the earth to put on a great show for the town so, from me as the Mayor on your behalf, I say a very big THANK YOU to all concerned. One last point, this year’s town lights have been magnificent and have drawn praise from locals and visitors alike so well done everyone. I have been asked why Whittlesey doesn’t have a switching-on of lights, I explained because of the wide range of electric connections, it was then added why not the tree?... I will ask the question and see what we can do for 2026. Regards, Alex Miscandlon
WALLY CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY
Wally Newman recently hosted his 100th birthday party at the Manor Centre with family and friends. He served on the minesweeper HMS Moon in the World War II and even when victory in Europe was announced the captain of the ship had new orders not to come home but to go to the Far East for further work. Wally was also a Whittlesey Citizen of the Year recipient in 2008 and was also recently awarded a Cambridgeshire High Sheriff Award. Photo: RWT Photography/Radio Fenland

WHY DO WE NEED A PROPERTY PROTECTION TRUST?
M
ost people hope that their estate will pass on to their loved ones eventually. But this will not happen for many unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees.
The solution to help protect your estate is a will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the
property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together but have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property. Westminster Law will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Children at Park Lane Nursery, Whittlesey are enjoying an enhanced outdoor play and environmental education area, thanks to a grant. The nursery was awarded £36,500 from Glassmoor Local Environment Fund, which provides funding for projects that improve the environment and enhance residents' knowledge of an environmental issue. The fund is one of several similar funds available for projects in Fenland.

The grant enabled the development of the nursery’s outdoor area including a new pergola, bug hotels and nature play equipment. Liz Hughes, nursery manager, said: “We are so grateful for the support of the fund in enabling this hugely valuable project. It has significantly improved our nursery outdoor area and everyone is delighted with it. “Outdoor play is vital for nursery children. It boosts physical health, supports emotional well-being, and sparks curiosity through hands-on exploration and social interaction. “The bug hotels, fruit, vegetable and flower wooden planters are not only great for our children’s learning but are also helping to improve biodiversity in our garden. It also captures the interest of our families and wider community and engages them in considering the environment too.” Discover more about grants available at www.fenland.gov.uk/grants 10

Meet Sarah
January is often seen as the month of fresh starts – but for Sarah, her journey wasn’t about a calendar date. It began with a powerful realisation: something had to change. Not just her weight, but her mindset, her habits, and the way she treated herself.
She had spent years stuck in a draining cycle of guilt, food, and shame, but after a conversation with her GP, she made a decision that this time, she’d do it properly. No half-hearted attempts. No quick fixes. Just real change. Slimming World gave her the structure she needed and more importantly, it gave her the support she’d been craving. That one brave step led to over five stone of life-changing weight loss. Sarah had stopped appearing in photos. She bought clothes that fitted, not ones she liked. Her energy was gone, her body ached, and she didn’t feel well. Then came the diagnosis: severe obstructive sleep apnoea. Suddenly, everything felt serious. When she walked into Slimming World, stepping on the scales felt terrifying, but when she did
it, it felt like a weight lifted; no judgement, no side-eye, just understanding, empathy and support. Food used to be a reward or a source of guilt. Now? It’s just food – enjoyable, satisfying, and no longer part of a punishment cycle. Sarah checks her week ahead and builds meals that fit her lifestyle – birthdays, meals out, busy days – she works with them, not against them. She praises the power of the group, citing the laughs, the honesty and her consultant who lifts her up, notices when she’s struggling, and celebrates every win. Her message for potential members is: “You’ll love the routine, the support, the community and slowly, the way you feel now won’t be the way you feel forever. Believe in yourself – you’re capable of so much more than you think.”

WI MEMBERS ENJOY SING-SONG
Whittlesey WI ladies were entertained in December by the glorious and joyous singing of Christmas carols and songs by a large group of The Whittlesey Singers accompanied by Paul Turner on the keyboard whose playing was said to be superb. All the ladies joined in with the singing and shaking bells in some of the carols and had a really fun time together. They gave a huge thank you to the Whittlesey Singers for coming along to entertain them. Members also enjoyed a delicious light supper that had been prepared by the WI committee and there was lots of chatting and laughter in the hall which had been beautifully decorated for the Christmas festivities. This month, the WI ladies will be having their New Year's meal at The Falcon, Whittlesey and the next meeting in St Andrew's Hall will be on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026 at 7.30pm when Corrine Wooding will be talking about 'A Right Royal Affair' with music and illustrations. wines from thailand:
A Good Choice...
T
hailand (officially the Kingdom of Thailand and previously known as Siam) is a country in Southeast Asia whose capital city is Bangkok.
Today, manufacturing plus tourism and agriculture are the leading parts of Thailand’s economy. From the shopping malls of Bangkok, through the fabulous coastal beaches, with hundreds of tropical islands, plus the nightlife and world heritage attractions, culture, history, sports and more, there is something for everyone to appreciate and enjoy. Thai cuisine and wines are very popular and can now be found globally. Monsoon Valley is a multi award-winning fine wine producer. Grapes are carefully selected and transported in airconditioned vehicles from the Monsoon Valley Vineyard to the Siam Winery. Producing splendid wines, with grapes only grown in Thailand, Monsoon Valley wines are now recognised around the world and enjoyed by numerous connoisseurs, as well as being available in five-star hotels and restaurants, in Thailand and many countries, worldwide. the bouquet and for the mouth’s pleasures. This pairs wonderfully with red meats. If it’s a rosé that is preferred, then the Monsoon Valley Rosé will not disappoint, having grapes grown on ‘floating vineyards’ and at the Monsoon Valley Vineyard. This wine has a delicate nose, with excellent mouthfeel and palate, and is extremely popular, with many, on numerous occasions. If a Shiraz is required, then Monsoon Valley Shiraz, from the Premium Range, with its ruby-red, enticing appearance, has it all. Dark fruits are in abundance, with oak-aged barrels contributing to the exceptional pleasures of this wine. This one is fantastic with red meats. For an aromatic, sweet wine, Chenin Blanc Dessert Wine (flagship) “ticks all the boxes for me”. Having Chenin Blanc grapes, left on the vines for several days longer, ensures provision of the added sugars required to produce this impressive delight, which gives a grand finish. These are just some of the wines from the Monsoon Valley ranges. For all details, please visit www.monsoonvalleywine.co.uk or www.siamwinery.com

Property News
From The Budget to Christmas... and The Housing Market In-Between As I sit writing this, the Chancellor has just delivered the 2025 Autumn Budget. By the time this lands in your hands, Christmas will have been and gone which is a strange thought in itself. So, the obvious question is: how did the Budget affect the housing market?
T
he short answer is: not much at all.
Despite weeks of speculation, the Budget delivered no changes to Stamp Duty, a relief for many who feared yet another shift in the goalposts. What did make headlines was the introduction of the new High-Value Council Tax Surcharge, essentially a ‘mansion tax’ on homes valued at more than £2 million. That means annual charges ranging roughly from £2500 to £7500, depending on the property’s price band. The good news for most readers is that this doesn’t really affect us in our area. Landlords will also see tax on rental income rising by two percentage points from April 2027, adding some pressure to the buy-to-let sector. But again, for the general buyer or seller locally, nothing here fundamentally changes your ability to move. Yet, ironically, even though the practical impact is minimal, the uncertainty in the run-up to the Budget has caused hesitation. People often pause when they see dramatic headlines even when those headlines don’t actually affect them.
This is where our message remains consistent: life doesn’t stop because a Budget does or doesn’t change something. Buying or selling a home can be daunting, but if you can afford to move and the timing is right for you, don’t put your life on hold. At Cannon & Co, we work differently. After years in the council, the NHS, and being a buyer and landlord myself often frustrated with poor communication, I knew the industry could be better. That’s why we’re genuinely open 6am to 10pm, offering valuations in the evenings when families have settled down, and helping clients, like the school teacher I’m liaising with at 6am as I write this, at times that suit real life. If you’re unsure about the market, pop into our weekly Friday drop-in (11.30am-1.30pm) at The Little Tea Room or our evening session on the last Monday of each month (6pm-8 pm). You can also watch our weekly market updates on Facebook. Whatever the Budget says, your life is still moving and we’re here to help you move with it.

Have Your Say on OPTIONS TO IMPROVE WHITTLESEA RAILWAY STATION
Fenland District Council is inviting residents, businesses, and rail users to take part in the next stage of consultation on the future regeneration of Whittlesea Railway Station. In October last year, the council launched a survey on how people use the station to help unlock funding for station improvements. Now it would like people’s views on the options for improvement, which include a new pedestrian bridge and platform extensions, and improved public areas and car park. The options consultation will run from Monday, January 5th to Sunday, February 1st, 2026, and includes an online survey and a series of in-person and online events. To find out more, visit: www.fenland.gov.uk/ WhittleseaConsultation Whittlesea is one of three Fenland stations included in a rail regeneration programme being delivered through the council’s Railway Station Masterplans project, which also includes March and Manea stations. The programme is supported by funding from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, with £3million earmarked for improvements at Whittlesea between 2024 and 2027.
important that it is fit for the future. “Thank you to everyone who has already taken part in the first survey, gathering views and experiences of using the station – your feedback is helping us build a strong case for investment. This next stage of consultation is about the potential options for improvements. We want to know what you think about the options on the table, what you would prioritise, and whether there’s anything you feel is missing. “By taking part, you will be helping to shape the final proposals and ensure the station improvements reflect the needs of the community, both now and in the years to come.” Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Paul Bristow added: “Regenerating Whittlesea Station is personal to me as my father was so involved in this project when he was a councillor. I’m determined that we see the benefit of the £3 million the Combined Authority is
investing. Better rail connections mean better access to jobs, education and opportunity, and local people deserve a station that’s safer, more accessible and fit for the future. This consultation is your chance to shape those improvements, so please get involved and tell us what matters most to you.” There are a number of ways to get involved in the consultation options: • Online survey: available at www.fenland.gov.uk/ WhittleseaConsultation Printed copies of the survey are available upon request. Email transportandaccess@ fenland.gov.uk or call (01354) 622445. • In-person drop-in events: where people can view the options, ask questions and share feedback. Please see the advertisement featured on the opposite page for the details. • Online information session: for those who prefer to take part from home. The first station survey asking for views on how people use the station is still open. Feedback on this survey will help develop the business case needed to access the funding and progress the next stage of the station’s regeneration plans. To share your views, visit: www.surveymonkey.com/r/ RailSurvey2025
Cllr Gary Christy, chair of the Railway Station Masterplans project board and the council’s portfolio holder for transport, said: “Whittlesea Station is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses and visitors, so it’s 32

The Whittlesey-based business is headed by Sam Williams who has ten years’ experience in all types of garden work, from design, groundwork and fencing through to patio building, all types of woodwork and clearance. The company has picked up work in the Huntingdon, Cambridge and Peterborough areas, attracting a lot of business via the influential MyBuilder online trade platform. I can do a full job, taking my customer’s ideas from design through to completion.
“Work has grown steadily over the years and I pick up a lot of work by word of mouth and from working on new build estates where one customer will recommend me to their neighbours. “Most people want work on their garden when the sun comes out in the summer but we can cater for their requirements throughout the whole year.” Sam, who grew up in Ramsey, says one of the key factors in his success is his attention to detail and the fact that he can deal with all his customers' requirements. How Physiotherapy Can Help Your Ageing Dog
s our beloved dogs age, it's natural to see some changes. Maybe your onceenergetic pup is taking more naps, hesitating before jumping into the car, or lagging behind on walks? While slowing down can be a normal part of getting older, it's important to recognise that it may also signal discomfort or pain. Canine physiotherapy is an increasingly accessible and effective way to improve quality of life for ageing dogs.
What Is Canine Physiotherapy? Canine physiotherapy is focused on improving movement, reducing pain, and enhancing recovery after injury or surgery. Certified canine physiotherapists use techniques adapted from human physical therapy, including massage therapy, therapeutic exercises, laser and ultrasound treatments and joint mobilisation and stretching. These all aim to strengthen muscles, improve joint flexibility, boost circulation, and reduce inflammation.
Dogs generally start to show signs of aging between seven to ten years old, though this varies by breed and size. Common signs include:
• Behavioural changes, such as increased irritability or withdrawal
Physiotherapy can address common issues like: Arthritis pain: Controlled exercises and modalities like heat therapy or laser treatment can ease joint pain and slow down degeneration. Muscle atrophy: Therapeutic exercises help maintain muscle mass and strength, supporting better balance and movement. Mobility problems: Improved range of motion and co-ordination can reduce falls and increase independence.
Many owners mistake these signs for ‘just getting old,’ but they may indicate underlying joint pain, arthritis, or muscular weakness. Left unchecked, these issues can affect mobility, cause chronic pain, and reduce a dog’s overall well-being.
Your veterinarian may refer you to a qualified canine physiotherapist or rehabilitation centre. After an initial assessment, a treatment plan will often combine in-clinic sessions with at-home exercises. Progress is typically gradual but noticeable.
• Stiffness after rest • Reluctance to exercise or play • Difficulty climbing stairs or getting into vehicles • Changes in posture or gait

MAKING PLANS for the year ahead!
H
appy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. I can hardly believe it’s over and now I’m looking forward to the year ahead.
January is always a good time to make new plans, and I’ve been making a ‘to-do list.’ As I’m Professor Pompoose-know-eet all, the cleverest person in the whole wide world, “Oh no you’re not,” I hear you shout, well, I’ll leave that for you to decide. As I was saying, being so clever, I have so much information whizzing through my brain that I must put it in a sensible order rather than it being all jumbled up. That’s why I like to make plans.
• Share my knowledge: I know it’s a tall order to expect you to be as clever as me – don’t worry that won’t happen – but I’m happy to share all the amazing facts and new discoveries that I make so you won’t miss out. See you in school soon!
Professor Pompoose

Plans are important because it gives us something to aim for – there’s no better feeling than knowing you’ve reached your goal. That could be at school where you want to get top marks in your spellings or maths tests, or you may be aiming to get to the next level in your reading or even want to be selected for the local sports team. Here are my top three goals for this year: • Get fit: After all those mince pies and chocolate at Christmas it’s time for me to get healthier. I’m practising my keepy-uppies again and I’m doing brilliantly. I’m determined to beat my personal record and impress the local football teams. Shout out to any team looking for a new player – I know someone, ME!! • Read more: I read my books over the Christmas holidays and I’m not going to stop now. Fiction books really help me with my imagination and non-fiction teaches me so many new facts about the world we live in, and my favourite topics – science and nature. I’m also planning to continue reading my bible because that shows me so much about God and how to be a better person. I found this in Jeremiah 29v11, “I know what I am planning for you,” says the Lord. “I have good plans for you, not plans to hurt you. I will give you hope and a good future.” WOW! Even God has amazing plans for us – that makes me feel safe and extremely happy knowing he is with me all the time. 46

New Year Festival Customs and Traditions Many of the customs of New Year festivals note the passing of time. The Romans derived the name for the month of January from their god Janus, who had two faces, one looking backward and the other forward. The practice of making resolutions to rid oneself of bad habits and to adopt better ones also dates from ancient times. Some believe the Babylonians began the custom more than 4000 years ago. These early resolutions were likely made to curry favour with the gods. Nearer to home, the nostalgic Scottish ballad “Auld Lang Syne,” revised by the poet Robert Burns, is often sung on New Year’s Eve. Symbolic foods are often part of the festivities. Many Europeans, for example, eat cabbage or other greens to ensure prosperity in the coming year, while people in the American South favour black-eyed peas for good luck. Throughout Asia, special foods such as dumplings, noodles, and rice cakes are eaten, and elaborate dishes feature ingredients whose names or appearance symbolise long life, happiness, wealth, and good fortune. Because of the belief that what a person does on the first day of the year foretells what that person will do for the remainder of the year, gatherings of friends and relatives have long been significant. The first guest to cross the threshold, or “first foot,” is significant and may bring good luck if the person is of the right physical type, which varies with location. First foot traditions are observed, for example, in Scotland, Isle of Man, and parts of northern England. Public gatherings, as in Trafalgar Square in London or in Times Square in New York City, draw huge crowds. Many people mark the new year with religious observances, as, for example, on Rosh Hashana. Buddhist monks are presented with gifts on the day, and Hindus make oblations to the gods. In Japan, visits are sometimes made to Shintō shrines of tutelary deities or to Buddhist temples. Chinese make offerings to gods of the hearth and wealth and to ancestors.

WHITTLESEY RIFLE CLUB A YEAR OF COMMUNITY, PROGRESS AND PRIDE
strengthening our community through sport
At Whittlesey Rifle Club, we are celebrating another successful year, with well-supported events, busy weekly sessions and achievements across all levels of the sport. Over the past year we have continued to play an active part in the community, giving local residents a welcoming place to learn new skills, make new friends and take part in an inclusive sport that treats everyone on equal terms. Free taster sessions at the Big Bash and Armed Forces Weekend brought almost one hundred visitors through the door. The Sporting Memories Group also joined us for an afternoon on the range, with plenty of target practice, laughter and good conversation. Weekly open sessions continue every Monday and Tuesday, supported entirely by volunteers who give their time to help new and existing members enjoy the sport. Today we have around two hundred members, including fifty young people. Many parents have spoken about the positive impact the club has had on their children, helping them grow confidence, self-discipline, concentration and an understanding of safety and responsibility. Adults, too, benefit from the friendly and inclusive atmosphere, with families, veterans, older residents, and people with disabilities all taking part together. It is this social mix that keeps the club thriving. It has also been a strong year for competitive shooting across the whole club. Alongside our president – Paralympic champion Matt Skelhon, who added a new British record, a Grand Prix gold in Serbia and a European silver to his achievements this year – many members have also enjoyed success at local and regional competitions in 2025. 54
D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea
This year’s achievements were celebrated at our annual presentation evening on December 5th, where members of all ages and abilities were recognised for their progress, commitment and medal-winning performances. Competition shooting sits at the heart of our club and we are proud of everyone who represented us throughout the year. Looking ahead, Fenland District Council has given support, in principle, for a new range building as part of future plans for the Manor Leisure Centre site. A final decision is expected next summer once costings are confirmed. A modern facility would safeguard the future of shooting sports in Whittlesey for decades to come and strengthen our ambition to become a regional centre of excellence. Finally, we thank all our members, volunteers, families and supporters for everything they have done throughout 2025. Their dedication keeps the club thriving and ensures that Whittlesey Rifle Club remains a valued part of our community, as it has been for more than a century. J A N UA R Y 2 0 2 6

I
HAPPY NEW YEAR. I HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT 2026 By Steve Barclay MP
n Fenland the year opens with a special event in the form of the Straw Bear Festival in Whittlesey, which will be held on Saturday, January 17th, 2026. It is now in its forty-sixth year and will feature more than 250 Molly dancers, musicians, and performers filling the streets. Thank you to all the volunteers whose dedication makes this unique event possible.
The winter months have seen no let-up in the problems caused on local roads from potholes, and I have repeatedly raised concerns with Cambridgeshire County Council. There is now a public database showing what potholes have been registered and when they will be repaired, accessed via the CCC Highways Reporting portal cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/travel-roadsand-parking/roads-and-pathways/roadworksand-faults and I will continue to highlight flaws in the current approach which is letting drivers down. In particular it appears that no penalties for poor performance have been imposed on the contractor in the past year, suggesting the contract is being badly managed.
Likewise concerns continue with the ongoing repairs to the Ralph Butcher Causeway which result in motorists facing endless delays. Contractor Jones Bros has once again delayed the completion date for works on the crossing. I hope, as you read this in January, the opening is imminent – or now open – if not yet another deadline will have been missed. In Parliament I chair the Finance Select Committee, and one key objective has been to bring more transparency to how the parliamentary authorities spend public money. Normally it is a committee that meets in private, and a change I have made is to open hearings up to more transparency. More transparency is also needed on the Government’s proposals to restrict the right to trial by jury. For more than eight hundred years since the Magna Carta, it has been a key protection in law that decisions on innocence or guilt are determined by juries, and I am deeply concerned that this will be restricted. Given this fundamental change was not included in the Government’s manifesto, it is imperative that Ministers set out the impact assessment for these changes so we can measure the outcomes being promised.
