Welcome
to your October issue...
I
t’s been an exciting month for our Discovering Magazines team as the first issue of our latest title, “Discovering Chatteris” finds its way into the homes and businesses of this small, friendly Cambridgeshire market town.
No sooner have holiday things been stored away and new school shoes and uniforms ‘broken in’, than we now turn to local schools and their Open Days for next September’s potential intake! If you are looking to give up smoking, “Stoptober” is the campaign for you and so much help is available by visiting websites such as www.campaignresources.dhsc.gov.uk/ campaigns/stoptober-2026. With the money you’ll have saved, treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en, October 31st. Finally, don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we ‘lose the hour’ on Sunday October 25th.
Claire x
Getting older sometimes gets people worrying that their sanity might not be as good as it once was. I’d like to think that I’ve not lost too many of my marbles … unlike one of my neighbours. Last week, I heard her having a conversation with her cat, clearly thinking that her cat understood her – “Crazy woman”, I thought! When I got back, I discussed it with my two dogs and they both agreed with me! Congratulations to Bourne Men’s Cricket First Team on winning this season’s Lincs Premier League Premier Division, after a very close final game against Scunthorpe. And finally, Joe told me he’d had a delicious Asteroid Pie recently – a bit like Steak and Ale Pie … just a little meatier! He once tried to date a pretty dental receptionist – she told him she’d see him in six months! Enjoy the read!

Choose the Study Pathway for You The SLAT Sixth Form at Bourne Academy offers a choice or three study pathways and twenty-three different subjects. There is often debate amongst students and their teachers about what are the best qualifications or subjects to study at Sixth Form or College. The SLAT Sixth Form at Bourne Academy can give students the freedom of choosing their preferred study pathway that best suits them with a wide choice of subjects, plus they can study three or four subjects. As a Sixth Form with over 350 students, they are
able to offer more subject choices and, best of all, students can choose whether to choose an ACADEMIC PATHWAY (with A-levels only), a VOCATIONAL PATHWAY (with BTECs only) or a COMBINATION PATHWAY (with a mix of A-levels and BTECs). We looked at three students from the Class of 2026 at Bourne Academy who all chose different study pathways.
Elana Cox
Elana improved her chances of gaining a place at her first-choice university by studying four subjects on the ACADEMIC PATHWAY. As well as studying four subjects, she was a member of the debating team and involved in the school as a reading ambassador. After achieving an A* in A-level History, A* in A-level English Literature, A in A-level English Language and an A in Sociology, she is now studying Law at the University of Bristol, a prestigious ‘Russell Group’ university.
Adam Mussa Beaumont
Adam studied four subjects on the COMBINATION PATHWAY with a balanced mix of creative and analytical subjects to gain skills in areas such as spatial creativity, measurements and structural understanding. He achieved a Distinction* in BTEC Art & Design, A in A-level Mathematics, A in A-level Physics and B in A-level Chemistry. Adam is now studying Architecture at Loughborough University.
Meredith Marsh
Meredith was destined to be a star ever since she started dancing at the age of 4, and her passion continued for drama and music by appearing as leads in many musical productions. Not only is she a talented performer, but she has excelled academically on the VOCATIONAL PATHWAY as she achieved a Distinction* in BTEC Performing Arts, a Distinction* in BTEC Creative Digital Media Production and a Distinction in BTEC Music Performance. To take the next step of pursuing her dreams of acting on stage or screen, she is now studying Acting at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The Pension Rule Nobody Told You About
T
he clocks are about to go back, the evenings are drawing in, and if you are anything like me, October is the month the jumpers come out, and the central heating goes on for the first time without feeling guilty about it. It has also, quietly, become one of the most important months for anyone who has ever put money into a pension. Here is why. For as long as most of us have been saving into a pension, it has sat neatly outside your estate. If you died with money still in it, it usually passed to whoever you had nominated without Inheritance Tax taking a slice. It was one of the few genuinely simple bits of planning: save into your pension, name your loved ones, done. That is changing. From April 2027, most unused pension funds will be counted as part of your estate
NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal
for Inheritance Tax purposes, just like your house or your savings. If your estate is over the tax-free threshold, whatever is left in your pension could be taxed at 40%, the same as everything else. I know what you might be thinking: “That is a ‘wealthy people’ problem, not mine”. And for most families, it genuinely will not change anything. But it does not take a fortune to tip over the threshold once you add a pension pot to a paid-off house and some savings. It is exactly the kind of quiet, creeping change that catches ordinary families out, not because they were careless, but because nobody told them the rules had moved. There is a second, more urgent point too. Many people, quite sensibly, named their children or grandchildren directly on their pension rather than their spouse, because it used to be the most taxefficient way to pass money down. From April 2027, that same nomination could trigger a tax bill that a straightforward gift to a spouse would not. If you have not looked at your pension nomination form in a few years, October is a good excuse to dig it out. None of this needs to feel overwhelming, however. Think of it less as a tax problem and more as one more piece of “futureproofing” for the people you love, a bit like checking the boiler before winter really sets in, so nobody is left in the cold. A short conversation now, while there is still time before 2027, can save your family a great deal of stress (and money) later. If you would like to understand what these changes could mean for you, give us a call on 01778 252301 or scan the QR code to book a convenient time to talk it through.

Words from the Mayor of Market Deeping
Councillor Debbie Jones
First, I would like to reflect on what was a fantastic day at the Deepings Duck Race. It was wonderful to see so many people supporting this much-loved community event.
A
huge thank you to everyone involved. We recently welcomed the Vintage Motorcycle Club (VMCC South Lincs and Peterborough) who gathered in the town with their collection of classic motorcycles, creating plenty of interest from passers-by. Sadly, I am very aware of the concerns being raised about anti-social behaviour and vandalism in our town, understandably upsetting for residents and businesses. I am pleased that we have a good and constructive working relationship with our local police and PCSOs, and we continue to work closely with them to address these issues and find solutions. Please report any instances that you witness, either by calling 101 or online at www.lincs. police.uk. This is the only way to ensure that incidents are properly recorded and that we receive the appropriate support. The PCSOs are also holding monthly drop-in sessions for the public at the library, so please keep an eye out for the dates. If you have any concerns, do go along and speak to them directly.
much to look forward to. The many events throughout the year have shown just how much community spirit there is here, and it is wonderful to see residents, businesses, organisations and volunteers all playing their part. Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you to Steve Somers for his time, generosity and fantastic contribution to the community. Steve has been entertaining us in the town throughout the summer while raising money for Dementia UK.
Dates for your Diary • November 1st - Remembrance Garden open • November 8th - Remembrance Service and Parade • November 29th - Christmas Fayre
Our park keepers, as always, are really busy out and about, making repairs, ensuring equipment is safe and available to be used, and keeping the town and our green spaces looking great. Their hard work is very much appreciated. As we head towards the end of the year, there is still 22

any people spend years working hard, paying the mortgage, raising a family and putting money aside whenever they can. Yet surprisingly few ever stop to ask one simple question:
“Is my money actually helping me achieve the life I want?” Financial planning isn’t just about pensions, investments or tax. It’s about making informed decisions today that can give you more choices tomorrow and in the future. Whether your goal is retiring comfortably, helping your children onto the property ladder, reducing the impact of Inheritance Tax or simply feeling more confident about your financial future, having a clear plan can make all the difference. Many people have pensions from previous employers, workplace schemes, ISAs and savings built up over many years. But without looking at everything together, it can be difficult to know whether you’re making the most of what you’ve worked so hard to build. A well-structured financial plan helps answer some of life’s most important questions: Am I on track for retirement? Will I have enough income? Am I using my money appropriately to achieve my goals? Could my family face an unnecessary inheritance tax bill? Am I making the best use of the allowances available to me? There is rarely a single right answer. Every individual and every
family has different priorities, which is why financial planning should always be personal, tailored and built around your own objectives. I work with individuals, families and business owners across Lincolnshire and the surrounding counties. My role is to help clients understand where they are today, identify where they want to be in the future, and create a clear plan to help bridge the gap. I pride myself on holistic financial planning and relationshipbased advice. I believe it’s the people behind the numbers that matter most, and I take the time to understand what’s important to you. Throughout this monthly series of articles, I’ll be exploring some of the financial topics that affect many of us at different stages of life, including retirement planning, investments, protection, inheritance tax and passing wealth to the next generation. My aim is to explain these subjects in a straightforward, practical way, helping you make more informed financial decisions with confidence. In November’s edition, we will focus on retirement planning. I’ll give an overview on the do’s and don’ts when it comes to retirement planning that I hope will assist you in your everyday life or give you direction. If there is a particular question that you need assistance with, or a particular pension you would
like to discuss, feel free to get in touch.

WINES FROM THAILAND
T
A Good Choice! hailand (officially the Kingdom of Thailand and previously known as Siam) is a country in Southeast Asia. Today, manufacturing, tourism and agriculture are leading parts of Thailand’s economy. Thai cuisine and wines are very popular and can now be found globally.
Monsoon Valley is a multi-awardwinning fine wine producer. Grapes are carefully selected and transported in air-conditioned vehicles from the Monsoon Valley Vineyard to the Siam Winery. Producing splendid classic, premium and flagship wines, with grapes only grown in Thailand, Monsoon Valley wines are now enjoyed by numerous connoisseurs and are also available in 5-star hotels and restaurants, in Thailand and many countries worldwide, including the UK. Monsoon Valley White (12% vol) wine has a pleasant bouquet, plus a good mouthfeel and palate sensation, and is excellent with seafood and white meats. The Monsoon Valley Red (13%
30 52
vol) wine has ripe, red fruits for the bouquet and the mouth’s pleasures. This pairs wonderfully with red meats. If it’s rosé that is preferred, then the Monsoon Valley Rosé (12% vol) wine will not disappoint. This wine has a delicate nose, excellent mouthfeel and palate, and is a wine that is extremely popular for numerous occasions. If a Shiraz is required, then Monsoon Valley Shiraz (13.5% vol) from the Premium Range, with its ruby-red, enticing appearance, has it all. Dark fruits are in abundance, with oak-aged barrels contributing to the exceptional pleasures of this wine. It is fantastic with red meats.
D I S C O V E R I N G March
Muscat (15% vol) is a ‘flagship’ delectation and a very popular fortified dessert wine, having aromatic nasal delights of ripe, tropical fruits, which continue on, for the palate’s enjoyment. I found this to be an ideal ‘towards ending’ or finishing of a dining occasion. When a sparkling wine is required, Monsoon Valley Brut Prestige (11.5% vol) pleases, absolutely. Utilising 100% early-picked Colombard grapes, this sparking production has gained many devotees. I found this wine to be hugely refreshing and to be a perfect accompaniment to fish, salads, seafood, sushi, sashimi, plus white meats and great for celebrations, occasions and parties. For details of all wines from Monsoon Valley Winery, including (easy) ordering and stockists, please visit www.monsoonvalleywine.co.uk www.siamwinery.com
As always, enjoy!

Think About Winter-proofing Your Home Before the Cold Snap Bites By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Now is a great time to winter-proof your property with a series of checks and actions. Safe Local Trades can offer experts at the touch of a button across the PE area to help make your home awesome in autumn and ward off the worries of winter. By preparing your property, both inside and out, you can save on effort, energy, and be kind to your pocket. Here is a pre-winter maintenance checklist for your home and garden which could avoid a November nightmare or December disaster; with our Safe Local Trades members offering rescue and remedy: • Check all external pipes. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage. • Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in a draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes and make sure that taps don’t leak. • Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. • Get a boiler service. Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns. • Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows – so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. Meanwhile, here’s a seasonal maintenance checklist: • Check the stopcock is working. • Check the window frames and doors are sealed well. • Use draft excluders under doorways and around letterboxes. • Clean and put away any outside furniture. • Inspect the roof for damage or leaks that could worsen over the winter. • Ensure all locks, security lights, and alarm systems are working properly. • Check there are no leaks in the guttering joints when it’s raining. To source reputable traders, for any of the above jobs and many more, visit www.safelocaltrades.com and use the Search options. OCT OBE R 2 0 2 6 OCTOBE

Your Garden
T
here’s still plenty to do this month, including harvesting late crops, planting for next year and improving the soil.
The most important job, when beds become vacant, is improving your soil. Healthy, nutrient-rich soil lays the foundation for thriving plants, abundant harvests, and a vibrant ecosystem. Adding organic matter like manure or leaf mould helps with the soil structure and slowly releases nutrients. It also enhances the soil’s capability to retain water and air- crucial for good root development and uptake of nutrients. Fresh manure should not be used until it has been composted and never put fresh manure around edibles. Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now. although carrots can be left in the ground it is probably advisable to lift them. Potatoes should be stored in paper or jute sacks in a dark, dry, frost-free environment Carrots can be stored by spreading a layer of sand in a box and laying them on the sand, avoid them touching, and then cover them completely with another layer of sand, repeat until the box is full and then cover. You can also successfully keep root vegetables, except potatoes, in the ground by covering the roots with a layer of straw to protect the plants from frost. Crops that can be sown this month are: • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.
46
• Broad beans – early varieties should overwinter. • Sow a pot of basil seeds and put in a propagator or on a warm windowsill, keeping the soil moist. Parsley and mint can be dug up from an established clump, put in a pot and kept on the windowsill – much cheaper than buying pots from the supermarket! Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Check the condition of last year’s fleece, cloches and winter protection so that you can plan for any cold spells that may be imminent. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas – leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you have not already done so earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot.
Happy gardening!

Local History
Dangers in the Dark
B
KINDLY SUPPLIED BY DEEPINGS HERITAGE
efore the first gas lamps were installed in Market Deeping’s streets in 1854, social events on winter evenings were timed to coincide with a full moon, making it safer for people and horses to see their way home. Residents of Deeping St James and nearby villages, especially those unsteady on their feet after visiting public houses, had to beware of the river and dykes. Accidental drownings were not uncommon. It was reported that people travelling along Stamford Road on dark nights were in great jeopardy, with no fence between the highway and the river. If a horse shied, occupants of a vehicle could be thrown into the water. In January 1813, John Palmer was driving his carrier’s cart through Deeping at around 5am on his usual route between Boston and Stamford, transporting goods for customers. He also had a female passenger with a baby in her arms. As they neared the junction with Millfield Road, two men appeared out of the darkness and grabbed his horse’s bridle, while a third man fired a pistol through Mr Palmer’s left arm. A second shot passed so close to the woman that it singed her eyebrows. Despite his injury, John Palmer fought them off and managed to draw his own pistol, making the attackers retreat. Posters were issued, offering a reward of £50 to identify the men, but it seems they were never traced. It was another January day, in 1845, when William Taylor, landlord of The Goat in Frognall rode
homeward in the evening from Stamford Market. He stopped off at The Bell in Deeping St James, where his son-in-law, Charles Lake was licensee. As it was late by the time he left, Mr Lake accompanied him on foot to see him safely home, but when they were a quarter of a mile from The Goat, two men rushed towards them. One tried to knock Mr Taylor off his horse, but in the darkness hit the horse’s neck instead, which made the animal bolt, with Mr Taylor hanging on to its mane. Mr Lake ran after him and both arrived, unharmed at the pub. After waiting half an hour, Charles Lake set off back to The Bell and was accosted again by two would-be robbers. Being powerfully built, he managed to fight them off, but when a third member of the gang appeared, Mr Lake ran away to safety. Deeping still had inadequate streetlamps in 1900 when the gas company was asked to light them each Saturday night, whether there was a moon or not! In the previous year, three of the lamps had been knocked down by runaway horses in the space of six months.

Celebrating Fifty Years of Helping Keep Vintage and Classic Cars on the Road If you have a Vintage or Classic Car you will probably know about Woolies, the Market Deeping company selling trim, upholstery and fittings for Vintage and Classic Cars. The company is one of Britain’s best-known Vintage and Classic Car suppliers and is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.
F
ounded in October 1976 by Ian and Caroline Woolstenholmes, the family business has spent five decades helping Vintage and Classic car enthusiasts, restorers and the motor trade all over the world. Popular products include materials such as headlinings, vinyls and hoodings, window channels, rubber and sponge extrusions, door and boot seals, rubber matting and sound deadening products, to name just a few. What began in a double garage with “nominal stock, ultra-keen prices and lots of enthusiasm” has grown into a globally recognised specialist supplier, serving customers throughout the UK and internationally. Orders despatched from the website have been sent to sixty countries worldwide. Most of the business is mail order with the majority of customers ordering on the website, www.woolies-trim.co.uk but you can visit the company at Whitley Way, Northfields Industrial
50
Estate in Market Deeping, PE6 8AR where they offer a counter service so you can be shown samples of products before you buy them. They are open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm but CLOSED between 1pm and 2pm for lunch. Today, the company is led by directors, Duncan Allen and Louise Woolstenholmes Green, the founders’ daughter, whilst Ian and Caroline still take a keen interest in the company. Louise commented “My parents started Woolies with a simple philosophy: offer quality products, fair prices and customer service which is second to none. Those principles remain at the heart of everything we do today.” As the company looks ahead to its next chapter, its mission remains unchanged: helping preserve the nation’s motoring heritage, one restoration at a time. Deeping St James
Community Primary School
The children have returned with our DSJ Learning Behaviours very much at the forefront, and it has been lovely to see. They are bursting with energy, enthusiasm and excitement to get back to their learning. It has been a joy to see so many children throwing themselves into the curriculum.
WE HAVE A WINNER Proudly holding her winnings is nine-yearold Abigail, after successfully matching the summer holiday images with the correct participating shops and businesses in the Summer Treasure Hunt in our August issue.
Our new Reception starters have also had a great start and have already been blossoming in and out of the classroom.
Every year, Abigail and her childminder have completed the Treasure Hunt and this time, it was their lucky year!
Welcome back everybody.
Congratulations, Abigail, and commiserations to all the other entrants whose name wasn’t selected!
