Have we ever looked forward to heavy rain so much? Still, the lawn mower has had a long holiday! The savings made on our tumble driers remaining dormant for weeks, however, will have been offset by newly acquired fans blasting the hours away! The European Athletics Championships, recently held in Birmingham offered us the chance to see a local “star in the making”, with Amy Hunt winning four gold medals. Our excitement at watching the former Grantham A.C. sprinter’s successes was then matched by the BBC News at Ten featuring her former sprint coach, Ian Richards (known by many of us ‘Old Brunnians’ as “Chidsy”!) And finally: ➡ What do you call a camel with three humps? Pregnant! ➡ I’m useless with names. It’s not my fault, it’s a condition. There’s a name for it... Enjoy the read (and the rain …!)

Outstanding Exam Results at Bourne Academy Students at the S.L.A.T. (South Lincs Academy Trust) Sixth Form at Bourne Academy have been celebrating their achievements, with another outstanding set of exam results with 49% of A-level and BTEC qualifications being the equivalent of grades A* to A and a 99% pass rate across all exams.

here is often debate amongst students and their teachers about what are the best qualifications or subjects to study at Sixth Form or College.

A record number of students sat exams in 2026 as the Sixth Form has grown year-on-year, as it attracts top achieving students from secondary schools across the region. The SLAT Sixth Form at Bourne Academy offers three different study pathways where students can study A-levels only, BTECs only, or ‘mix and match’ with a combination of both. This wide range of subjects gives them the best chance of securing university places, with 99% of students achieving the results required for their -chosen university. The top grades for A-level subjects are once again consistently high at the Sixth Form, with 40% of all A-level results were grades A* to B. For the vocational qualifications, an outstanding 72% of BTEC grades achieved were Distinction* to Distinction (equivalent to A* or A grade at A-level) with 98% of all BTEC grades achieved were Distinction* to Merit (equivalent to A* or C grade at A-level). Mrs Jemma Curson, C.E.O. at S.L.A.T. said, “We are immensely proud to celebrate another outstanding set of A-level and BTEC grades. It has been wonderful to see the successes of our students as their hard work and dedication has been rewarded. I would like to thank the Sixth Form team and teaching staff for all their advice, guidance and outstanding teaching that the students have received.” Miss Katie Belcher, Headteacher at Bourne Academy said, “The destinations our students have secured is incredible, with 99% having achieved their chosen university or apprenticeship offers. School children Lead Community Effort to Protect Baston’s Hedgehogs

community initiative to help protect one of Britain’s best-loved native animals has brought together residents, schoolchildren, and volunteers in Baston.

Local district councillor and school parent, Vanessa Smith, was approached by a Baston resident who was keen to see greater awareness of hedgehogs in the village. With several residents reporting regular hedgehog sightings in their gardens, there was a desire to encourage motorists and the wider community to take extra care to help protect these much-loved visitors. As funding for official roadside signs was not available through Lincolnshire County Council, an alternative community-led solution was found. Baston C of E Primary School’s Eco Warriors enthusiastically embraced the project by creating colourful hedgehog-themed designs, while volunteers from Deeping Men in Sheds created the hedgehog silhouettes for the children to decorate. In total, eleven unique hedgehog signs have now been installed around Baston, serving as a colourful reminder to look out for

hedgehogs and help protect their habitats. Hedgehogs are one of the UK’s most recognisable mammals, but their numbers have fallen dramatically in recent decades due to habitat loss, busy roads, pesticides and the fragmentation of gardens. They are now classed as a vulnerable species, making local conservation efforts more important than ever. Residents can help by creating small gaps in garden fences to allow hedgehogs to move freely between gardens, leaving areas of long grass or log piles for shelter, avoiding slug pellets and other pesticides, and checking carefully before mowing long grass or lighting bonfires where hedgehogs may be nesting. Providing a shallow dish of fresh water, particularly during dry weather, can also make a real difference. The project demonstrates how a community can come together to support local wildlife. Thanks to the creativity of Baston C of E Primary School’s Eco Warriors and the craftsmanship of Deeping Men in Sheds, the village is helping to ensure hedgehogs continue to find a safe home in Baston for years to come.

Deepings Bowling Association Hosts Final of Mick Lewin Cup On August 14th, Deepings Bowling Association on Spalding Road hosted the Mick Lewin Trophy and Plate finals, which were fiercely contested in the Peterborough and District League. The winners, Whittlesey Manor beat Peterborough and District for the Trophy, whilst Stamford Town eased past Longthorpe Bowling Club for the Plate. The spectators were treated to some fine bowling and thirty-degree temperatures, leading to record ice-cream sales! A great afternoon was had by all.

WHY DO WE NEED A PROPERTY PROTECTION TRUST?

ost people hope that their estate will pass on to their loved ones eventually. But this will not happen for many unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of

the second partner the trust comes to an end, and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together but have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property. he new school shoes are probably already scuffed; the lunchboxes are back in circulation and there may still be a stray name label stuck to the kitchen table. After the blur of the summer holidays, September can feel like a fresh start. It is also the time when many of us start making lists again. School forms, clubs, appointments, uniform top-ups, birthday parties, it all creeps back in quickly. But before the diary fills up completely, it is worth adding one important job to the list: sorting your will and the “life admin” that sits around it. I know, it is not exactly the sort of thing any of us want to think about between school runs and swimming lessons. But making a will is one of those grown-up jobs that gives you a surprising amount of peace of mind once it is done. For parents, it is not just about

money or possessions; it’s about making things easier, clearer and kinder for the people you love, if life takes an unexpected turn. One of the biggest reasons is guardianship. If your children are still young, your will lets you say who you would want to look after them if you could not. It is a horrible thought, of course, but it is also an incredibly loving one. You are making your wishes clear so that the people around you are not left guessing at the worst possible time. A will also helps set out who should deal with your estate and how you would like things to be shared. That can be especially important if you have moved house, had another child, got married, separated, started a business or simply have not looked at your will for years. What made sense then may not be right for your family now. It is worth thinking about Lasting Powers of Attorney too. These let you choose who could make decisions for you if you were ever too unwell or injured to make them yourself. Many of us assume our partner or family could just step in, but it is not always that simple. Putting the paperwork in place now can save a lot of stress later. None of this must be scary or complicated. Think of it as another way of looking after your family, a bit like packing the PE kit, booking the dentist, or making sure there is bread in the freezer for emergency toast. So, while September still has that fresh-start feeling, book the appointment, ask the questions and tick it off now - you will be so glad you did! um, as an alcoholic spirit drink, has been around for many years, with history showing the records dating from at least the 17th century. The preferences and requirements of rums vary from person to person.

Some rum lovers may enjoy a light or golden-coloured rum, whist others could choose a dark-coloured rum, for example. Flavoured rums have also become widely popular over recent years, for rum ‘devotees’ too. The Caribbean area is very much recognised as ‘where it all started’, for rum productions. Family recipes and varying ingredients, plus the processes involved, bringing rums to fruition, all have an effect, for appearances, bouquets, mouthfeel and palatability – each to their own delectation! One of the absolute highlights of the summer was the recent Deepings Raft Race.

he atmosphere along the River Welland was fantastic, with people from Market Deeping, Deeping St James and beyond coming together to cheer on the crews, enjoy the entertainment and support local charities and stall holders. My heartfelt congratulations go to everyone involved in organising the event. September brings another firm favourite in the calendar with The Deepings Lions’ “World Famous” Duck Race on Sunday September 6th, from 12 noon to 5pm. Whether you’re sponsoring a duck, cheering from the riverbank or simply enjoying the atmosphere, I hope you’ll come along and support another wonderful event. Unfortunately, like many towns, we’ve experienced some incidents of vandalism and anti-social behaviour lately. Although these involve only a small minority, they can have a real impact on our community. Sadly, the disabled swing recently installed at Charter Avenue Park has had to be removed as it has now been deliberately broken twice. We have also had graffiti in the Cherry Tree Park which is incredibly upsetting not just for those who use the park with their young children but also for the team of hardworking volunteers who have worked so hard to make it such a welcoming place. I want to reassure residents that the Town Council is working closely with our local neighbourhood policing team and partner organisations to address these issues and try to

come up with a solution. I’d also like to thank everyone who reports incidents and the many volunteers who help keep our town looking its best. I’m delighted that preparations are well underway for this year’s Deepings Business Awards, which are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the businesses, employers, charities and individuals who work so hard to make our local economy thrive. If you haven’t already done so, please make sure you vote for your favourites, ahead of the presentation evening on October 17th. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a strong independent business community, and I encourage everyone to continue shopping locally whenever they can. Planning has already begun for our annual Christmas Fayre and festive celebrations. Events like these don’t happen by accident, and I’d like to thank everyone who gives their time to make them possible, particularly our dedicated team of clerks Gail, Emily and Julie. As Mayor, I have the privilege of meeting so many inspiring people—volunteers, community groups, local businesses and residents who quietly give their time to make our town a better place. Visitors’ Views of Deeping St James

n old, decayed town that looks out-of-the-world and forsaken, as though nothing would ever happen there again,” declared one travel writer in 1920, but he did concede that High Locks and its wooden footbridge were picturesque and was impressed enough to sit and sketch the scene. Five years later, when Christopher Marlow travelled through the Fens, he described a long street of ancient, thatched cottages, whitewashed barns and ivy-covered shops with a glorious view over the river and meadows, making Deeping St James “the gem of English villages”. An earlier visitor in 1912 thought the village an old-fashioned little place. He called at the vicarage to obtain a key to the church, and the vicar accompanied him inside, pointing out everything of interest. They inspected several miniature sundials which had been scratched into the front wall of the porch and noted an ancient wooden “sentry-box” which was used to shelter the vicar when he conducted burials in bad weather. The shelter remains in the church but only a few markings on one of the sundials are still visible. The following year, a cyclist visited Deeping St James and described his experiences in newspaper articles. He peeped through the barred door of The Cross and noted three stone seats inside with chains and iron wristlets. To confirm his opinion that it was once used as a cell, he asked “a very old but intelligent-looking man” who was sitting

on the steps of The Cross, about its history. The man who was in his eighties remembered many a drunken fellow being locked up in it. He said the wife of one old chap who often spent the night there used to go early in the morning with her teapot to give him a drink – but it wouldn’t be tea, it was a drink of ale. She used to put the spout through the bars of the door and pour it down his throat. A more sober experience was recalled by a boy from Sleaford who attended the Cave Adullam Chapel (a denomination of strict Baptists) in Bridge Street in 1850. Its pastor, Frederick Tryon was a charismatic preacher and the chapel was full, with labourers in smock frocks and leather gaiters, and farmers and gentry from the surrounding district. The chapel was in use until the 1980s and is now converted into a private house. To encourage tourists to visit locations away from mainline railway routes, train companies commissioned artists to produce posters for their carriages. The watercolour of Deeping St James was painted by Freda Marston in the 1940s and showed an attractive view of the old stone bridge.

ays are shortening and there will be quite a bit of clearing to do on the vegetable patch this month as you harvest all those wonderful crops. Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread disease so put them on the compost heap, if they are not diseased. Some examples of crops for planting now: • Winter lettuces (“Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose). • Spring greens – seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October. • Spinach. • Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves. • Onion sets and garlic. • “Green manures.” There are numerous varieties on the market but “Winter Mix” is a good recommendation. These green manures perform three main functions. – They provide compost material. – They help prevent weed growth. – They soak up nutrients that would normally be washed away by winter rains. If you have a light soil they can be left in over winter and early next spring the plants can be dug in before they flower. Those with clay soils will benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig. A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry. • If leaves are shading the fruit of your tomato plants, remove them now to help the trusses ripen. • Prune blackberries when picking is over, cut out all the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leave new canes unpruned. • Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds. • Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in. • Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners. • Apply nematodes to control slugs and snails while temperatures are still mild. Moist weather gives the best results. • Feed all late crops with a general fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure. • Lift potatoes if they are ready, usually 18-22 weeks after planting. Wait until the foliage has fully yellowed and died back. Cut the tops off and leave tubers in the soil for 10-14 days to allow skins to harden, improving storage life. Potatoes should be stored in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed, to prevent them turning green or rotting. • Lift onions, which should be stored in the light and, if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place.

Record Crowds Enjoy Deepings Raft Race

his year’s theme, Marvellous Musicals, inspired an incredible display of creativity, with rafts and costumes celebrating some of the world’s best-loved productions. Spectators were treated to floating performances inspired by The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz, Wicked, The Lion King and many more. Competition was particularly fierce in the “Pub & Hospitality Race”, with five local businesses (The Bull, The Stage, The Waterton Arms, Thirsty Giraffe and Lake Ross Holiday Park) entering. The Waterton Arms’ team, Hulkmaniacs, took the top honours. Kevin Barber, Chairman of the Deepings Raft Race committee, said, “What an incredible day. The Raft Race just keeps getting bigger and better, and it was brilliant to see the Craft & Raft event return so successfully, along with such strong competition across every race category.”
