s we bowl headlong into the second half of the year, we are now in the month of school sports days and “proms”, signifying a conclusion to another school year and the start of that longed-for summer holiday. It is so pleasing to see how many people are now realising that there are opportunities to put on events and attractions in our towns and villages to keep everyone involved and have “fun in the sun”. An excellent case in point is how the Elsea Park Community Trust in Bourne will be hosting a three-week long “Urban Beach” next month with free activities galore.

I was amused to discover that July 7th is “World Chocolate Day”, celebrating the joy of that heavenly product, and then, eight days later, we have “National Give Something Away Day” which is designed to promote generosity and sharing - yes, but we’ll have already eaten it all on July 7th!

A most eventful week in The Lake District for our family recently as one of us managed to fall and get hauled off The Old Man of Coniston by stretcher, courtesy of the awesome Coniston Mountain Rescue Team. It was an opportunity for us all to seriously appreciate just how professional and well-drilled these rescue teams can be, and all relying on voluntary contributions for their existence. (I told them I’d give them a shout-out! www.conistonmrt.org – Ed.) And so, here we are enjoying/enduring the extravaganza that is the FIFA World Cup. For many, the sweepstakes have given us the chance to try and discover just what, and where in the world are places like Curacao and Uzbekistan!

And finally: ➡ N ever buy trousers in the South of France – they’re either Toulouse or Toulon. ➡ T here’s to be a “Dress up as a Type of Bread Day” at school next week – roll on Monday!

Words from your New Mayor

I

t is both a great honour and a privilege to serve as Mayor of Market Deeping. I am proud to serve our town and to represent the people who make this community such a wonderful place to live in, to work in and to visit. I have big shoes to fill as I step into the role as Councillor Bob Broughton takes a very well-deserved rest but don’t worry, he continues to be a very active part of our Town Council team, as he has been for many years. I would like to extend my thanks to Bob for all his support throughout my year as Deputy and I hope I can do as good a job as he has done.

Market Deeping has a rich history, a strong sense of community, and a remarkable spirit of volunteerism. Throughout the year ahead, I look forward to meeting residents, attending local events, supporting community groups, and celebrating the many achievements that take place across our town every day.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the mayoral role is the opportunity to meet the individuals and organisations who work tirelessly to improve the

lives of others. Whether through fundraising, volunteering, caring for neighbours, or supporting local initiatives, so many people contribute to making Market Deeping the vibrant and welcoming community we are proud to call home.

For my mayoral year, I have chosen to support two charities that provide invaluable services to our community: LIVES and the East Anglia Veterans Association. LIVES provides vital emergency response services across Lincolnshire, helping to save lives when every minute counts. Their dedicated volunteers and responders play an essential role in supporting our emergency services and caring for those in need.

The East Anglia Veterans Association offers friendship, support and companionship to veterans and their families, recognising the sacrifices made by those who have served our country and ensuring they remain connected within their communities.

I hope that during my term of office we can raise both awareness and funds for these worthy causes.

The Rotary Club of the Deepings Boosts Library with £300 Donation A heartfelt thank you to The Rotary Club of the Deepings for their kind donation of £300 to Linchfield Academy. This wonderful contribution has enabled us to purchase new library books, with a special focus on supporting our Year 1 learners and exploring important themes such as empathy, resilience, and feelings.

We were delighted to welcome Rotarian’s Rita, Peter, and Teresa into school where they

saw, first-hand, the children enjoying the fantastic books.

Katie Brockington, Headteacher at Linchfield Academy, said, “We are incredibly grateful to The Rotary Club for their generous donation. These new books will make a real difference in helping our youngest learners understand important values like empathy and resilience.

It was great to see the joy this gift has already brought to our children.”

Coronation Day Creativity Year 2 pupils at William Hildyard Primary School had a fantastic Coronation Day at school recently.

The morning was filled with a variety of coronation-themed crafts, where the children enjoyed creating flags and other royal decorations. They used ink pens to write certificates and decorated celebratory mugs. In the afternoon, they took part in their own coronation role-play, stepping into the shoes of kings, queens and special guests. The celebrations continued with dancing and a delightful tea party giving everyone chance to enjoy the royal atmosphere. It was a great day full of creativity, imagination and fun that children will remember.

Some "Irresistible" Favourites

T

here are some wine productions that can be classed as irresistible.

For this quest, I searched for a range of wines and found a most acceptable list, that were indeed, labelled “Irresistible”.

Various types of wines satisfy numerous people, be it a dry white, off-dry production, sweeter delectation or perhaps something sparkling.

EXPLORERS SAUVIGNON BLANC (12% vol), from Marlborough, New Zealand, I found to be dominated, exceptionally well, with the fruity flavours of gooseberries. This dry wine is extremely popular, satisfying many white wine lovers, constantly.

VIOGNIER ST GABRIEL PAYS D’OC (13% vol) hails from France. This dry, fully flavoured wine production has the pale gold colours and excellent bouquet enticing to the mouth’s pleasures. Floral and ripe stone fruits are most evident.

BACCHUS (12% vol), from Kent, England, is a further, very popular dry white wine. I rated this production highly, having overtones of elderflowers and gooseberries. Fresh, and again with an aromatic pleasure for the nasal senses, this wine has countless devotees.

SOLO (12.5% vol). This dry Garnacha pink pleaser comes from Spain. The pale pink colour adds ‘interest’ to many dining tables. Old bush vines provide the red fruits for this delectation.

EIGHT ACRES (11.5% vol), from Kent, England, is highly rated by many dry, sparkling rosé, wine lovers. Ripe, juicy red fruits are very noticeable, for the mouthfeel and the palate’s delight. Again, this elegant wine adds delicate colour to a lot of dining occasions.

PROSECCO (10.5% vol) is hugely popular around the world. Both the sparkling white and sparkling rosy productions are regularly a feature at celebrations, parties and events. Italy is one of the countries, renowned globally, for wine productions of highquality and their Prosecco wines are always in demand.

All these wines can be very much enjoyed on their own, as well as accompanying numerous foods, such as white meats, fish, seafoods, salads and more, admirably.

I located these wines at a Coop store, all in their “IRRESISTIBLE” range. I found the Co-op range of wines, including a good number of award-winners, to be excellent. Knowledgeable advice is always available in stores, if required. Take time and pleasure, to find your favourites. www.coop.co.uk

G

uthlac was born around the year 673 AD, the son of a nobleman from this area which was then part of the kingdom of Middle Anglia.

His name meant “gift of war”, so it may have been an adult nickname, rather than given to him at birth. About twenty years earlier, an abbey had been founded at Peterborough, which was then known as Medeshamstede, and was one of the earliest centres of Christianity in the district. It is unclear what kind of settlement existed where The Deepings are now, but the surrounding land was described as a dismal fen of immense size with black waters overhung by fog!

Typically for a young man of his status, Guthlac began a military career. Rival kingdoms fought and robbed each other of treasure, with successful warriors taking their share. By the age of twenty-four he was wealthy, but he decided to abandon that lifestyle and joined a monastery at Repton in Derbyshire. Seeking a stronger religious experience, he then chose to become a hermit with a life of solitude and hardship among the fenland marshes at Crowland.

His reputation as a holy man grew, and the Bishop of Middle Anglia came to test his authenticity, ordaining him a priest and consecrating his place of prayer as a church. He attracted other high-status

visitors and remained at Crowland until his death in 714 AD. About twenty years later, a monk recorded his life story after speaking to men who had known Guthlac in his hermitage. Although accounts of his suffering and miraculous powers are likely to have been embellished to support his later sainthood, the basic facts of his life are a valuable insight into the man and his long-gone era.

As centuries passed, his fame increased, drawing pilgrims to his dwelling, said to have been part of a prehistoric earthwork in a place now known as Anchor Church Field, north-east of Crowland.

The illustration of Guthlac sailing along the river to his hermitage is one of eighteen images depicting scenes from his life, produced in Lincolnshire about five hundred years after his death. Twelve of the illustrations have been reproduced in stained glass windows at Market Deeping’s church which is dedicated to St Guthlac. The oldest part of the present church dates from the 1100s, but it is believed that an earlier chapel commemorating the saint once stood on the site. The section of a carved tomb cover which is now preserved in the church porch also pre-dates the existing building. The modern Catholic Church of Our Lady & St Guthlac at Deeping St James, also reveres his memory.

egular hoeing and watering are key this month. A regular hoeing regime keeps your soil open, weed-free, and allows water to penetrate easily.

Consistent watering is critical especially during dry spells. Water deeply, rather than ‘little and often’, preferably in the early morning or late evening, as evaporation is reduced and this helps plants absorb moisture properly.

If the weather is wet and warm it provides the ideal conditions for the fungal spores of blight to reproduce and it can wreak havoc with your crops if not identified and dealt with immediately. Spray tomatoes and potatoes against blight and dig up any rogue potato plants from last year as they may be harbouring disease. If you do find blight (look out for black blotches on foliage) and if spotted early, cut down the top growth immediately to protect the tubers or fruit. Do not compost the leaves, preferably burn them.

It is time to lift garlic, onions, and shallots.

Loosen the soil around the roots then choose a dry spell to lift them, lay them on the ground to dry out in the sun and this should help prolong their storage life.

Although it is getting late for sowing and planting there are still a few crops that can be planted: • Lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves – succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn.

• Fast growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots – a good time to sow carrots to avoid the carrot fly.

• Plant out cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping, using the space created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes.

A few jobs for this month include: • Strawberries will finish fruiting so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants.

• Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed.

• Cover cauliflower heads with the leaves to prevent them from going yellow.

• A major cause of poor crops with potatoes is poor nutrition. They are a very greedy plant, and a boost now will pay a dividend in tubers.

A feed balanced as for tomatoes is ideal.

• Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep the pigeons off.

• Inspect cabbage leaves for eggs or caterpillars and squash them or spray.

• Liquid feed crops weekly to maintain productivity, especially for tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, and sweetcorn.

Win Tickets to Wistow Maze In celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s one hundredth year, Leicestershire’s famous annual Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of a Mountain Gorilla, which he famously filmed in Rwanda in 1978 for the iconic BBC series, “Life on Earth”.

he giant eight-acre maize maze has a fun Quiz Trail hidden amongst three miles of pathways, with high-level bridges and towers giving stunning panoramic views.

Visitors are challenged to find twelve quiz boards, featuring animals from his pioneering nature series, as well as interesting facts about this famous naturalist and broadcaster. They can also take part in a variety of mini mazes and games in the ‘Activity Funyard’, which includes a space-hopper track, hoopla, beanbag throwing and a football shooting game.

Across the road is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, Garden Centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, making it a great day out for all ages.

Deeping 10K and 3K Fun Run Sells Out Again

T

he Deeping 10K and 3K Fun Run took place on Sunday May 17th, with the event selling out for the second year in a row and online entries having to close early due to demand. There were 455 recorded finishers across the two races, with strong support from local runners, families, running clubs and volunteers.

The 10K race had 322 finishers, with

Tom North taking overall victory in 33:23.

He was followed by Daniel Snipe of Yaxley Runners & Joggers in 35:02, with Robert Jeffery third in 35:10.

The first female runner home was Holly Haywood of Lincoln Wellington Athletic Club in 39:11. Josie Knight of Peterborough & Nene Valley AC was second female in 40:39, with Jennifer Teachey of Werrington Joggers third in 41:30.

There was also excellent club support throughout the field. Peterborough & Nene Valley AC won both the male and female 10K team prizes. Their men’s team was made up of John Pike, Harry Ledger and Alex Curtis, while their women’s team was Josie Knight, Elisabeth Sennitt Clough and Rebekah Clough.

The 3K Fun Run also had a great turnout, with 133 finishers. Toby Carnaffan of Eye Community Runners was first home in 10:21, followed by Jake Henson of Huntingdonshire AC in 10:29, and Max Beckett of Hunt’s AC in 11:28.

The first female in the 3K was Monica Stuart of Peterborough & Nene Valley AC in 12:14, followed by Elena Faulkner of Thorney RC in 12:55, and Georgie Henson of Peterborough & Nene Valley AC in 12:57.

Local clubs were well represented, including Werrington Joggers, Yaxley Runners & Joggers, Thorney RC, Eye Community Runners, Peterborough & Nene Valley AC, Bourne Town Harriers, Bushfield Runners, Stamford Striders, Huntingdonshire AC, Fenland Running Club and March AC. Werrington Joggers had the largest club turnout across the two races.

Race Director, Terry said, “Sunday was a fantastic team effort. The number of runners has grown again, and that brings extra work behind the scenes, but the support from the volunteers made the day possible. A big thank you must go to the marshals, car parking team, registration team, Acorn Medical Team, Deepings Rugby Club, Open Door Baptist Church, Deepings School, The Goat Public House, local residents, and everyone else who helped on the day.”

The organisers are now reviewing the event and looking at ways to make next year’s race, planned for Sunday May 16th, 2027, even better.
